“What General Lee’s Feelings Were I Do Not Know. As He Was A Man Of Much Dignity, With An Impassible

“What General Lee’s feelings were I do not know. As he was a man of much dignity, with an impassible face, it was impossible to say whether he felt inwardly glad that the end had finally come, or felt sad over the result, and was too manly to show it. Whatever his feelings, they were entirely concealed from my observation; but my own feelings, which had been quite jubilant on the receipt of his letter, were sad and depressed. I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse. I do not question, however, the sincerity of the great mass of those who were opposed to us.”

– Ulysses S. Grant, As Quoted in Personal Memoirs of General U. S. Grant

Can I just speak for a second about how much of an absolute crazy BAMF Stonewall Jackson was?

I mean, this was a guy who was raised in the mountains of Virginia (later West Virginia) who pulled through West Point because of his skills in math and sheer tenaciousness. But he LIKED the army, and even after the Mexican American War he was teaching students what it meant to be a soldier.

Can I Just Speak For A Second About How Much Of An Absolute Crazy BAMF Stonewall Jackson Was?

When the South seceded from the Union, Jackson followed his State and was recruited into the Confederacy.

“Always mystify, mislead, and surprise the enemy, if possible; and when you strike and overcome him, never let up in the pursuit so long as your men have strength to follow; for an army routed, if hotly pursued, becomes panic-stricken and can then be destroyed by half their number.”

He earned his nickname of “Stonewall” in the Battle of First Manassas (First Bull Run as it was known in the North) when he stood in the midst of battle without retreating and thus inspired his men and the surrounding Rebels to stand their ground and chase the Union off. He became one of General Robert E. Lee’s most trusted soldiers and friends, so much so that when Jackson died Lee reportedly said, “He has lost his left arm. I have lost my right.” Jackson and Lee together won so many battles due to their combined tactical genius and tenaciousness that if Jackson hadn’t died then it’s possible that the Confederacy may have won the war.

Aside from his (near) brilliance on the field, Stonewall was well known for being eccentric. A list of habits and beliefs he had baffled contemporaries and still fascinates people today:

1) He believed that one of his arms was longer than the other and so would frequently held up the “longer” one to aide in better circulation.

2) Although debatable today, it was also said that Jackson loved chewing on whole lemons and was rarely seen without one even in the midst of battle.

3) He believed that if he had pepper in his food that it would make his left leg ache.

4) He was known by contemporaries as a “champion sleeper”, able to sleep anywhere-- even falling asleep with food in his mouth.

And that was only a few things.

Can I Just Speak For A Second About How Much Of An Absolute Crazy BAMF Stonewall Jackson Was?

And of course Jackson was a religious zealot, believing that he belonged to the “army of the Living God.” His religious views made it so that he was unafraid even in battle, believing that the Lord was utterly in control and would call him home only when it was time. He wouldn’t even mail a letter on Saturday in fear that it would be in transit on a Sunday.

But of course his respect of the Sabbath didn’t stop him from participating in battle.

He was also oddly bloodthirsty. He was known for his need for pursuit of the enemy, and there was even once when asked how the Confederacy could stop the Union from pursuing them, Jackson replied, “Kill them! Kill them all!”

Jackson has got to be one of the most fascinating figures of the American Civil War. I can’t say that this man was as great a hero as history will sometimes paint him but he was still someone who even today is hotly debated among historians. Some say he was a religious nut. Still others say that he was a hero of the South.

I think he was just a man, but he was someone who history will never quite figure out. Stonewall Jackson observed the Sabbath but was unafraid to kill the enemy. He was a borderline hypochondriac but he was unafraid of death. He’s simply a contradiction to himself in a lot of ways, and I think that is what makes Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson still such a figurehead of the Civil War and, I daresay, one its most fascinating.

This is seriously the funniest thing I've read in a very long time. Stories like these makes you rethink your desire to be an editor.

I’ll never not be amused by the fact that I can drop the words “crucifix nail nipples” into a conversation and some of you who have been with me since the livejournal days will join me in the flashbacks, screaming and crying all the way.

Broadchurch is a story about mothers

Yes, it’s stated and shown that Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller are certainly the main characters, and Alec’s journey is certainly the most obvious storyline in the series, I won’t argue that.

But Broadchurch is a story about mothers.

The series opens up with a shot of Danny Latimer standing on the cliffs and then it cuts to Beth Latimer waking abruptly the next morning. Most of the first episode focuses on Beth and her journey finding Danny’s body, in fact, and her struggle trying to understand the loss of her son is a main focus of the first series. Several scenes in those episodes focus primarily on her:

Broadchurch Is A Story About Mothers

(Realizing what “finding a body on the beach” might mean.)

Broadchurch Is A Story About Mothers

(Opening of s1e2, when she’s folding Danny’s clothes.)

Broadchurch Is A Story About Mothers

(S1e7. “I lay there thinking what would I go through to have him back? I’d be raped, I’d be tortured, I’d have a gang of men on me, I’d be left for dead if it meant [Danny] was safe.” This was Jodie Whittaker’s finest moment, in my opinion. She hits Beth’s desperation and agony right on the head.)

Broadchurch Is A Story About Mothers

(And of course the moment when she tries to process the fact that it was Joe Miller who killed her son, and all of the fucked-up irony that comes with it.)

There are so many more moments when Beth is the prime example of the Mother Angle that Chibnall approaches but these were the moments when I think it was strongest.

Ellie is another example of mothers in this story. She’s constantly protective of Tom when Hardy pushes to speak to him and take part in the recreation. We all laugh at the moment when Ellie threatens to throw a cup of piss at her boss but the reason WHY she says it in the first place is the clue:

-”I’m his mum, I decide.”

-”Oh, so your commitment to this investigation stops outside these doors.”

Hardy tries to trump her authority over Tom. She explicitly states she doesn’t want her son to take part in the investigation in any way and Hardy keeps on pushing, even insulting her commitment as a police officer.

Don’t push the protective Mama Bear.

Favorite moment of Ellie as Protective-Mama-Bear is s1e8. It’s the moment that bothered me the most when Jocelyn Knight brings it up in s2.

Broadchurch Is A Story About Mothers
Broadchurch Is A Story About Mothers

Ellie does confront Joe as a wife, certainly, at the end of s1e8. But again it’s interesting to note exactly what it is that Joe asks that sets her off:

Broadchurch Is A Story About Mothers

She’s in control enough to only scream at Joe from a distance in the beginning of this scene. It’s only when Joe requests to see Tom that she sets upon him uncontrollably.

Seriously, do not piss off the Protective Mama Bear.

S2 deals with Sandbrook more than it really deals with Broadchurch as a whole, I think, and it definitely focuses more on Alec as a character, but the theme of Mothers is still prevalent in the contrasting images of Cate Gillespie, a drunk and unable to cope with the loss of Pippa; Tess Henchard, Alec’s ex-wife who loves her daughter but is willing to keep her guilty actions a secret so that Daisy won’t hate her; Beth, focused so much on getting closure for Danny she almost forgets about her newborn child (until Mark’s actions shake her out of her obsessive need for ONLY Danny); and then finally Ellie again, warning Joe away from their sons with the threat of death if he dares show up around either Tom or Fred again. It will be very interesting to see what direction Chibnall will go with the Mothers theme in s3.

Favorite Alec keels over moment is in the church with Paul in “November Fog”, mainly because I still love your Alec and Paul dynamic and their conversations. That, and/or the moment when Alec finds out Daisy has a boyfriend and he passes out because of the shock because I find it honestly amusing..

A Game...

Okay, so this proves without a doubt one should not give me a laptop while I’m sick. But I’m using my feverish, addled brain as an excuse to finally go through with this little game that I’ve been joking about with several people… and also because I’ve reached 250 followers and people do stuff when that happens (I sometimes feel like I’m the tumblr socially awkward version of Alec Hardy when it comes to these things).

As some of you may know, I have an unhealthy propensity for having poor Alec Hardy pass out in all kinds of circumstances… now this is your opportunity to vote for your favorite “Alec Hardy Keels Over” scene in any of my fics (see I don’t have the kissing thing going on so I can’t do that). I know this is a slightly morbid game, but I have to admit I do wonder sometimes. And when I did this with a few people, I actually was surprised (and I realize I might not even remember all the times it happens - erm… *blushes with embarrassment*).

Anyway, is there a prize? Well, it’s not really a competition, but if you can come up with a scene that I sort of forgot about, I’ll take a prompt (and if not you can leave prompts as well). I’ll start you off with a three of my favorite ones and then you can either add or pick the same (you have two votes) (warning this may contain SPOILERS)

I get where you’re coming from, nannyogg! I think Chibnall did name Alec after Thomas Hardy but I suspect he was aware of the definition of what ‘hardy’ really means in the English language. He likes his plays on words, lol.

What always really intrigued me about the name was the sound of ‘Alec’. Saying it out loud the name sounds cut off, or broken; your tongue wants to automatically continue the name into ‘Alex’ or something similar just so you’re not left hanging. So having ‘Alec’ as his first name, a word that’s broken, followed by his last name ‘Hardy’, literally meaning able to survive in the most difficult circumstances, is a fantastic juxtaposition.

So, totally random thought. As English is not my native language I do look up the precise definition of words frequently to avoid using them in the wrong context (I still do way too often though, sigh). Anyway, so I looked up something and stumbled over the word “hardy”. It never occurred to me until then that the actual definition of “hardy” is “able to live through difficult conditions & strong and able to accept difficult or unpleasant conditions”. I mean like a lot of us Alec Hardy enthusiasts I assumed that Alec is named after Tomas Hardy, but it is a nice coincidence, isn’t it? (well it might not be one after all).

Thoughts anyone? I’m sure @penfairy has figured this out ages ago. LOL. Anyway, happy Sunday everyone, I’m working on the next chapter for The Ocean Breathes Salty ;-)

One of my favorite things about Broadchurch is that you always find something new that Chibnall has slipped in that’s a nod to some of the greats of British culture. Thomas Hardy not withstanding, one of my favorite moments actually came in S2, episode 1, when we see Alec being interviewed by Maggie and Ollie. At the point at which she points out the cliffs behind him and that they’re starting to crumble more and slide farther down we see him look behind him.

One Of My Favorite Things About Broadchurch Is That You Always Find Something New That Chibnall Has Slipped

We get a good look at the mess of the beach as the camera pans around his shoulder and we get a good glimpse of what it looks like to Alec himself too. What he mutters is that nod to one of England’s poets.

One Of My Favorite Things About Broadchurch Is That You Always Find Something New That Chibnall Has Slipped

“Things fall apart” is just a small piece quoted from William Butler Yeats’ poem ‘, ‘The Second Coming’, the full stanza reading:

“Turning and turning in the widening gyre    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;    The best lack all conviction, while the worst    Are full of passionate intensity.”

Yeats’s poem alludes to the poet’s belief that history runs in cycles of 2,000 years, and at the end of every cycle a new hierarchy would rule.

But Chibnall cleverly uses this line to show us just where his characters are following Joe’s arrest. Clearly nothing has gotten better. There’s still tension. People who have been best friends for years have had their friendships destroyed. Ellie has been estranged from her home, her town, and even her own son with the blame others have placed upon her.

And being the outsider, Alec can understand and see that perfectly. He’s still obsessed with Sandbrook and solving the case that had to have had split that town open at the seams. The irony of the situation of the cliffs starting to crumble away faster sets the tone of the story and understanding the poem from which Alec quoted is a clue as to how the story will go, I think.

“Mere anarchy” is the center of the storm and the guilty party himself: Joe Miller, and he sets up the whirlwind that threatens to flatten Broadchurch with his ‘not guilty’ plea. He fails to recognize his guilt in Danny’s death and tries to shift it onto others. In some ways he creates anarchy by refusing to stand up to what he has done wrong.

“The blood-dimmed tide” and “ceremony of innocence” can be nods to the victims of Sandbrook, Lisa Newberrie and Pippa Gillespie. Lisa dies with her blood all over the floor of the Ashworths’ home which in turn starts the Sandbrook case itself. For Ricky’s murder of Lisa, his daughter Pippa will pay the price. And of course the ceremony of innocence being “drowned” can only point to one thing:

One Of My Favorite Things About Broadchurch Is That You Always Find Something New That Chibnall Has Slipped

“The best lack all conviction” can (mostly) be put towards Jocelyn Knight, who in the beginning of the story is apathetic to the trial of Joe and wants no part of the outside world. She’s lost her conviction in the light of her loss of eyesight and although she ultimately decides to take the Latimers’ case she starts it off unsure.

And of course Jocelyn’s hesitation and Mark’s secrets he keeps from the prosecution paves the way for the one who can only be labelled as the “worst with passionate intensity”:

One Of My Favorite Things About Broadchurch Is That You Always Find Something New That Chibnall Has Slipped

Sharon Bishop really makes me mad. Let me say that.

At the end of the poem Yeats concludes by asking, “And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?”

The second series ends with Joe’s being found innocent and his banishment from the town but it appears that Ellie warning him away from his own sons is going to come full circle at some point soon.

What rough beast will be born from that?

Let’s all take a moment to appreciate over-protective Ellie Miller in S02E07:

image

Claire Ripley comes marching up to the courthouse with her murder face on.

image
image

Ellie sees her come in. She knows Hardy is downstairs and that Claire is heading for him. Alarm bells go off.

image
image

shit shit shit shit shit

image

…aaaaand she’s off, faster that Mad Max in his Interceptor, ready to cut off Claire and stop her from getting to Hardy before she does

image

We see the target, sitting awkwardly alone and pretending to text on his phone.

image

Ellie has run ahead of Claire and she’s watching her like a hawk, positioning herself between the two of them, ready to fight to defend her large idiot friend

image

Claire reaches into her backpack. Ellie’s watching her, still a few strides ahead

image

She looks at Hardy, who is completely oblivious to what’s happening (jfc Hardy this is why she doesn’t trust you to look after yourself)

image

And bam. When Claire slaps the pendant against Hardy’s chest, Ellie is right there, literally having positioned herself between the two of them to make sure her tall skinny Scottish bastard isn’t in any danger

image

(ง •̀_•́)ง

Without even thinking about it Ellie ran (ran!) to throw herself bodily between Hardy and a murderous-looking Claire. It turned out to be a complete overreaction on her part, but if Claire had reached into her backpack to pull out a weapon instead of the pendant, Ellie would have been on top of her and wrestling her into submission faster than you could blink, and probably before Hardy was even aware that she was in the building. For all her complaints about him, Ellie is so instinctively protective of Hardy. Her entire attitude is basically “he may be big but he is fragile I’ll fight ur ass don’t test me”

Hoping David and his family the best comfort they can after Sandy’s death. I was just listening to ‘Will the Circle Be Unbroken?’ and it made me think of my own uncle who loved God and his family and left behind far too many people behind when he died. But I’m thinking that Sandy, like my uncle, believed that that ‘circle’ won’t be broken even by death.

‘The Book Thief’ Tells The Fictional Story Of A Young Girl Growing Up In Nazi Germany In 1939. When

‘The Book Thief’ tells the fictional story of a young girl growing up in Nazi Germany in 1939. When the story begins Liesel Meminger cannot read but by stealing an old copy of ‘A Gravedigger’s Handbook’ she convinces her foster father to teach her slowly how to read. Along the way Liesel begins to understand the awful and awesome power of words as a political world built on a dictator’s own words spells death and destruction for millions of people. The story itself is narrated by Death as he travels to and fro from place to place and the entire narrative is spun with a bleak, black sense of humor and sense of human understanding as Death spends his days living in the filth and destruction of wars and murders and, at rare moments, kindness and beauty even at the very end.

How To Train Your Dragon Is My Favorite Children’s Series Ever. Seriously. Even More So Than Harry
How To Train Your Dragon Is My Favorite Children’s Series Ever. Seriously. Even More So Than Harry

How To Train Your Dragon is my favorite children’s series ever. Seriously. Even more so than Harry Potter or The Outsiders. I love the HTTYD films equally as much but in my opinion the books are so much more adult and so much WISER than anything else I’ve ever read in any other kids’ story. Cressida Cowell understands how the world works and how children cannot remain so forever, and how with friends and family there will be loss and hurt; for god’s sake, she writes things that are more adult in that story than most kids’ books even touch on. There’s one point where Hiccup is being eaten alive slowly by a snake-like dragon whose stomach juices are eating away at Hiccup’s feet, and another where he’s being literally tortured by Alvin the Terrible by being dunked in the freezing sea over and over again for longer and longer periods. But the story approaches life in an amazing way and is even more beautiful and amazing for when Hiccup and his friends triumph.

If you’ve never read these books, go do so. Now. You won’t be disappointed.

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works

I’m fascinated by Tess, and I’ll be perfectly honest in saying I do still ship Alec/Tess. This fic itself isn’t shipping in terms of the show but gives a (hopefully) realistic reasoning as to how Alec and Tess may have first met, how their marriage dynamics would have been, and how their marriage ultimately dissolved.

As a shorter summary, Tess can be a possessive bitch and Alec is too “good” sometimes for his own well-being.

I was rewatching random moments of Broadchurch season 2 the other day and started wondering what Ellie Miller actually thinks of Hardy`s ex wife. I couldn´t figure it out, whether she just doesn´t know her enough to judge if she likes her or not or what she thinks. This might be random but I thought I´d ask the one who knows this show much better than I do. What do you think? What does Ellie think about her?

It’s an interesting question. Honestly, I’m not sure if even Ellie knows what to think of her. I’m guessing she must know about how the pendant got lost and what Tess did to Hardy, but she also seems very open-minded, and she’s not willing to demonise Tess or judge her for it.

Ellie and Tess are compared and contrasted a great deal, and just like Joe and Alec, they are depicted as opposites. The women look similar, they are both Hardy’s DSes, they’re both mothers - but they make opposing choices. E.g. Ellie is invited to have an affair at work - she refuses. Tess, on the other hand, committed adultery. The two of them are rivals for Hardy in a way, but Chibnall’s writing is clever and nuanced enough to avoid the whole cliche of women fighting over some dude.

But back to the central question - what does Ellie think of Tess? Remember this is Ellie Miller. Staunch, take-no-shit feminist. Our very first scene showed her greeting all her friends and handing out presents to them right before she chewed out her boss for sexist bullshit. She’s a woman-loving social butterfly and she gets on well with everyone she meets. And if she doesn’t get on with someone, she makes it her mission to smother them with kindness. With this in mind, what I find striking is that Ellie is quite awkward around Tess. She’s friendly enough, but most of the time she’s with Tess and Alec she’s silent and caught between the two, often in a physical sense.

I Was Rewatching Random Moments Of Broadchurch Season 2 The Other Day And Started Wondering What Ellie
I Was Rewatching Random Moments Of Broadchurch Season 2 The Other Day And Started Wondering What Ellie

The first time she meets Tess, Hardy acts like a colossal jackass. He doesn’t tell Ellie that Tess is his ex-wife, he’s bitter and aggressive and insulting. Granted, Tess doesn’t behave all that appropriately either, but Ellie is reproving of his behaviour, and the impression is that she’s neutral in this particular marital war. Yes, Hardy is her friend, and yes he was the wronged party in a lot of ways, but his behaviour is inappropriate and she won’t enable it or tell him it’s okay. She whacks him and tells him off. She treats Tess just like she’d treat anyone else.

Tess acts as an obstacle to getting the case reopened, and several times Ellie sighs or rolls her eyes when Tess refuses again to reopen. But she also respects Tess’ capabilities as a detective. For all that happened with the Sandbrook case, Tess is good at her job. She’s competent and efficient, and once she’s put her mind to something she can do it easily. Ellie might not agree with everything she did in her personal life, or even all her professional choices, but she respects her capabilities.

What’s interesting is how quickly Tess can put her off guard. One of my favourite scenes is when Hardy wakes up after his pacemaker and Ellie’s there. They start bickering (because that’s their thing) and Tess comes in.

I Was Rewatching Random Moments Of Broadchurch Season 2 The Other Day And Started Wondering What Ellie

This shot is so well-composed, I love it. Look at the placement of the hands; it looks like they’re touching, and Ellie is gripping the bed so tight it’s like she’s holding his hand by proxy. Then Tess comes in:

I Was Rewatching Random Moments Of Broadchurch Season 2 The Other Day And Started Wondering What Ellie

They look up and Ellie’s reaction is almost one of guilt. It’s like she’s been caught. She does this weird shuffle and looks between the two of them, then quickly takes her hand away.

I Was Rewatching Random Moments Of Broadchurch Season 2 The Other Day And Started Wondering What Ellie
I Was Rewatching Random Moments Of Broadchurch Season 2 The Other Day And Started Wondering What Ellie
I Was Rewatching Random Moments Of Broadchurch Season 2 The Other Day And Started Wondering What Ellie

It’s not jealousy Ellie’s expressing - it’s more like embarrassment that she’s been caught with Hardy like this - by his ex-wife no less. There’s also an odd possessiveness. I wish I could gif this scene because Olivia Colman’s acting is so subtle and awkward, and you feel like Ellie herself isn’t sure how she feels. Someone encroaching on her bickering with Hardy? What is this? And does she trust anyone else to look after this idiot besides herself? Not that she cares about him, haha.

Later on, when Tess answers Alec’s phone on his behalf, Ellie gets a tiny bit flustered: “Oh! Oh, I was expecting him to answer.”

In a deleted scene, Hardy is begging Tess to reopen the case. Ellie is silent, and looks like a kid whose parents are fighting. Then Hardy slips up. He says to Tess “Please, love.” Tess immediately scoffs and looks to Ellie. “Did he just call me love?”

Ellie does not rise to the teasing. As Hardy swears and groans over his slip-up, Ellie tries to lighten the mood by saying, “I called the teacher “mum” once. Still can’t think about it without wincing.”

I Was Rewatching Random Moments Of Broadchurch Season 2 The Other Day And Started Wondering What Ellie
I Was Rewatching Random Moments Of Broadchurch Season 2 The Other Day And Started Wondering What Ellie

It goes over about as well as you’d expect. It’s fascinating to see social butterfly Ellie Miller flounder like this. She genuinely doesn’t know what to do in this situation, but we know her sympathies are with Hardy. Tess invites her to join her in laughing at him; she abstains and makes a joke about herself. Then Hardy demands to know why Tess doesn’t want this case reopened; she says she does, but she’s still got a career to protect. Hardy’s speechless. Tess leaves, and Ellie makes a face and mouths ‘ouch’ to Hardy as they get into the car together. It’s just a little nod of sympathy that shows, hey, that was out of line, I disapprove, and I’m on your side.

Ellie’s a woman who’s determined to see the best in everyone. I think she likes Tess and respects her in the professional sense, but she’s disgruntled by certain aspects of her personality and on a personal level it nettles her to see Hardy and Tess close, and she exhibits a certain reluctance to leave them alone. She’s quietly protective of Hardy, more so as the season goes on, and I think in S3 the differences between Ellie and Tess’ values will drive a wedge further between them. At the moment, Ellie isn’t quite sure how to feel about Tess - she’s conflicted on that point, but many of the things Tess does and says and how she treats Hardy don’t sit well with her.

As for how Tess feels about Ellie - well, she definitely resents the closeness between Hardy and Ellie. Regardless of her feelings for Hardy, I think Tess enjoys being loved by him. She’s ambitious and has a certain superiority complex. It’s natural for her to want to be the best detective or the most beloved of Hardy. Ellie represents a threat to that, and even if she doesn’t openly dislike her, she too is quietly unsettled. When she first meets her, there is a sense she believes Ellie is Hardy’s girlfriend, and this sets up that uneasy undercurrent.

The two most telling scenes are when Alec arrests Claire. Tess smugly informs him everything’s set up and she’s on top of the investigation. She says she’ll interview Claire with him. Automatically, Hardy says, “No. I need Miller.”

“Course you do,” she mutters with barely concealed resentment.

Then Tess pulls some evidence Ellie asked her to find. Ellie’s impressed by how quickly she did it. Tess looks Hardy in the eye and says, “I’m really good.” Hardy, however, ignores Tess, looks at the evidence and yells to Ellie, “Outstanding. Out-bloody-standing!” This makes Ellie grin like a dope.

Stay salty, Tess.

Tess’ reaction makes me wonder how Hardy used to treat her when she was his DS. Was he always complimenting her? Is that why she seems so sure of herself? Is Tess watching Hardy shower the exact compliments on Miller that he used to bestow on her? Divorced or not, it must sting.

In all, I think the women do respect each other, and they treat each other civilly. There’s never any hint of close friendship, however, and there is an underlying tension or an awkwardness to the way they act that will probably get worse in S3, though I don’t think Chibnall will ever make it so they’re doing anything as dull as fighting over Hardy. However, Ellie’s growing protectiveness of Hardy may certainly lead her to view Tess less and less favourably, because Tess has and continues to treat Hardy unfairly, and if he won’t stand up for himself and accept he’s not the guilty one, Ellie might have to force his hand.

Tim Hawkins' "hedge of protection"

Tim: Do you really think a hedge is going to scare the devil away?

Devil: WHAT IS THIS GREENERY?!

Devil: I can't get through that!

Devil: Move that bush!

Devil: My greatest weakness is landscaping, how did they know?!

“You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” by the Righteous Brothers is Alec and Tess’s song. No one will be able to convince me otherwise.
