some arguments about characters nowadays are so funny, especially when it entails characters who are children or have their past shown at some point, because it’s clear that people forget they were also kids once.
take Dabi/Todoroki Touya from MHA, for example.
“i don’t care if he was 8-years-old, he should’ve known better than to be sexist and not to ‘trauma dump’ on his youngest brother.” this argument is a common one i’ve seen so far, here on tumblr and on tik tok.
like. babes. children acting out are the reflection of their parents/guardians. moments that Touya was saying sexist shit as a literal 8-13 year old is a reflection of his father—who Touya had a clear level of obsession on top of the obvious deep desire to be loved and acknowledged.
plus, i understand many of us matured prematurely, and that makes it easier to understand Shouto’s response to abuse more so than Touya, however, we need to remind ourselves that maturing early is not ok and not the case for every child who has gone through abuse. but also, beneath the layer of “maturity” still lies a lost child. you know that better than anyone.
i’m not saying you have to love the little rascal, but maybe focus on the literal murder he committed to feel some sort of vindication at his current predicament instead of his actions as a mentally unstable child lol.

how it feels to not care about something that used to drive you insane

☆ he started watching horror games gameplays just to prove he could watch them without being scared (he couldn't)
☆ his favorite game is fnaf 3 (bc daddy issues lmao) but it's also the one that scares him the most
☆ he didn't care about the lore at first bc he was just watching gameplays but he somehow ended up watching a theory video and immediately loved the lore side of the fandom
☆ his favorite animatronic is foxy (bc he used to remind him of himself but he refuses to admit it out loud)
☆ he loathes balloon boy
☆ natsuo wasn't a fnaf fan but he knew the basics so he'd play the Toreador March at random times just to spook touya
☆ imagine if fnaf 4, sister location and pizzeria simulator came out while he was out in a coma: he wakes up with all the traumas and struggles that we know about but on top of that he learns that his fav franchise made 3 new games that give some kind of canon. so he watched the gameplays as soon as he could lmao
☆ he doesn't know if he hates or loves these three games. he is very much confused though. so he watched even more theory videos
☆ his favorite characters are henry and cassidy
☆ he hates security breach and basically believe there shouldn't have been any games after pizzeria simulator
☆ he never told the lov about this phase but one day shigaraki was humming one of the fan songs (maybe one that's not so popular) and touya sang along without realizing
☆ sihgaraki let him borrow his console to play fnaf 1 (bc touya never had the oportunity to play any of the games) and it helped them get closer even if they have heated arguments about theories they disagree on
☆ toga bought (stole) him a foxy plush for christmas. he keeps it in his room.

Out of all Touya's siblings, Fuyumi's the one he's closest to in this au. True to canon, when he returned home after the coma, he did intend to leave, but Fuyumi found him instead and derailed that plan entirely.
He doesn't have a relationship with Shouto and his relationship with Natsuo has gone sour. (I've actually got a separate one-shot in progress that'll go a little more in depth as to what went wrong there.)
With Rei and Endeavor abandoning him to his terminal prognosis and their brothers pulling away from him, too, Fuyumi has the apprehensive sense that she is the last person tethering Touya to their house.

People always forget how strong Dabi actually is,, all might HIMSELF said that Dabi alone could take out all the heroes. (He was litch recognized by the symbol of hope AND the symbol of fear!!)
His quirk defect is the only thing keeping him from ending everyone🤞 and besides that, most of the reason he looses his fight with shoto was because of his own emotional outburst. He lost control. Even after he looses, he comes back and has to be jumped by his whole family 2 be stopped😭. That man is a menace‼️😇 and I want him SO FUCKING BAD.
Friendly reminder that Izuku didn’t go charging into the fight with the slime monster until after he saw it had Katsuki
He was literally at his lowest point right then. Not one person in his life thought he could be a hero, and that day both Katsuki and All Might had made it clear to him that they thought it was impossible.
Izuku was horrified at his role in setting the slime monster free, that his own actions could cause harm to someone else, but he still didn’t go running into the fight until he saw it had Katsuki.
He knew his role. He knew it was the heroes job to save, not his. He stayed in his lane, observed, took notes, prepared himself to act, but he still never actually acted until he saw Katsuki in danger.
Only Katsuki’s safety would have driven him to do what he did. Yes, Izuku is heroic. Yes, he is hardwired to save others. But at his lowest point, no encouragement or validation or support from any corner, it was Katsuki being in danger that pushed Izuku to act when no one else would.
It had to be Kacchan.

mha’s ending should’ve been bittersweet
i know what you’re going to say “but Atlas, it kinda feels bittersweet already”
yes, yes it is. Izuku and Uraraka failed at saving Shigaraki and Toga (even though it was their main goal), the Todorokis aren’t doing better either, and basically no one in the league has been saved (even though “saving people with a smile” was literally Izuku’s dream)
no need to scroll for too long to see people complaining about the ending. i guess the only ones who’ve truly won are the bkdk stans.
[here i’m basing that ‘bittersweet’ feeling on the fact that the main goals haven’t exactly been accomplished + my own feelings tbh]
now, how do we make it better without changing it too much?
the main issue i personally have with the ending is that it’s trying so hard to be a happy ending when, as previously said, it feels bittersweet
and that’s where my main point is: in my opinion, the ending would have been better if it had been an assumed bittersweet ending
lets say we keep it all the same: Shigaraki, Kurogiri and Toga die, Touya is in the hospital, Spinner and Compress are in jail. so the heroes won but Izuku, Ochaco and Shouto feel like they’ve lost.
we had a conversation between Izuku and Ochaco, i wish we had heard more of Shouto’s feelings in the epilogue (it feels like Endeavor stole the spotlight in Shouto’s story but that’s a whole other subject)
what would’ve been great is a conversation between those threes (and maybe Bakugou too) and the teachers/pro heroes.
war heroes or not, they were just kids. and i think that the adults could (and should) help them deal with these feelings, especially eraserhead and present mix (that way the whole shirakumo/oboro plot gets a proper conclusion too)
that wouldn’t have been the best obviously. but it could’ve been a good start for the students to say: we failed, but we’re going to honor their memory by preventing this from happening again.
and then comes the time skip, in which we put more focus on the new generation of heroes doing more and really make a change. in canon, we know Ochaco and Shouji are working on it, i think it could’ve been more though. one example that comes to mind is the heroes ranking. giving more rewards to make sure no one else turns like endeavor feels weird. heroes aren't supposed to behave like toddlers???
the whole "we failed this time but we'll keep working to make the world a better place" is interesting imo, but it would have been accepted by the fandom if it had happened with another villain.
what i'm trying to say is: if izuku had failed to save another vilain in the middle of the story but had used this experience to do better with shigaraki, it would have been interesting. but here, it just feels like a failure with an epilogue to create an illusion of a happy ending.
I think my favorite Bakugou headcannon I've ever seen was on twitter and someone said that Pro Hero Bakugou's fans call themselves "dumbasses" bc that's what he calls literally everyone (the fans were never excluded from it) and his fan base took it and ran with it and he thinks it's the funniest shit ever.
It wasn't intentional and imagine the first time he heard it, a full-blown genuine laugh escaped him. One of those belly-hurting laughs where he was clutching his sides and had tears in his eyes, not caring who saw bc he was losing it😭
→ you: "I'm a proud dumbass!" *whenever Bakugou takes down a villain and all the tweets say this in support*
Later, he'll look at the trending #DynamightsDumbasses and smile to himself, in private, finding it very very endearing. is also forever grateful for the support 🥲
dare i say that neito monoma would have been a great protagonist?
i feel like the fandom either hate or love monoma, and i'm not ashamed to say i love him. he's probably one of my favorite characters amongst the students
so allow me to yap about how i feel a monoma-centric rewriting of mha would go
it would have the same start as the canon focused on izuku. monoma learns early in life that quirks have a huge impact on the way people see you but he decides to become a hero anyway.
the story would focus on monoma accepting he cannot become a hero like All Might (or the most popular ones in general), that he has to use his own tricks despite how unheroics they may seem. it would put an emphasis on monoma's inferiority complex. he literally describes himself as a 'background character' (or something like that). then you'd also have the whole dynamic of neito having a quirk considered weak/useless/villainous and having to prove his worth to both himself and his classmates (that would be interesting if he was fighting against Todoroki or Bakugou).
Shinsou would be an important part of the story too because i love him and i wish we'd seen more of their dynamic.
and don't even get me started on monoma making fun of 1A. I feel like this could make an interesting point on unhealthy coping mecanisms. like, you just need vlad king (who would be the parental figure™ of the story) telling monoma that putting other down won't help him in the long run, that he needs to focus on himself and that popularity doesn't matter in high school (it sounds like shit but trust me it has potential). and then bam (pun intended) you get a parallelism with bakugou who's also working on himself.
as the story goes, monoma learns to trust his classmates and work with them. he accepts he needs others to succeed (yk the whole power of friendship team) and is proud to be alongside his classmates and friends during fights.
monoma canonically struggles with his grades, which could be an important theme related to his self-worth issues (like, he's the only one who failed the midterms so he feels bad bc he feels like he doesn't deserve his place in the hero course)
and last but not least, you could even draw a parallel between him and afo: afo steals quirks, and so does monoma. the only diference being that monoma is doing this to help people and works with others.
anyways, i love him 🩷
