Doubt @ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
Hello everyone! This week's recommendation is Fool Night.
I wanna start by giving a shout out to tigdogboy on TikTok for making a video about this series and helping me discover it. He has some really great horror manga videos so consider checking them out.
"The earth of the distant future is covered in thick clouds, and the sun no longer shines. Plants wither, and oxygen is thin. To fight extinction, humankind has developed a technology that turns humans into plants, providing a small amount of oxygen. Is this process sustainable? Is it ethical?
Toshiro Kamiya must consider these questions as he’s faced with a difficult choice—save his family or save himself. Kamiya is at the end of his rope. His mother is ill, and his job barely pays for her medication, much less food. With few options left, he considers the life-changing process of floromorphosis. Ready to give his body up for a payday, Kamiya is about to explore the limits of society’s waning humanity."
Honestly I haven't read much of this series because print copies in English are going to be released next June and I'd rather read a physical copy, but having read the first chapter, I can tell that this will be a really unique series with it's art style and progressive body horror. Also, I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but the cover is super cool and well designed imo.
I also really like how the characters are being presented as well. Kamiya is a really interesting main character who's been failed by society and is just trying to get by, which I'm sure a lot of people can sympathize with. I'm not sure how his story will end, but I'm rooting (y'know, like a plant :D ) for him so far!
Horror stories that revolve around plants seem to be a lot less common than stories about animals, monsters, etc. so I'm glad to find a story like this. I recommend it if you like movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers from 1978.
Volume 1 in English is available for pre-order!
I started reading this manga having zero expectations (just because of being bored). Judging from the cover - it seemed to be some kind of summer romance story (sic!) but I couldn't be wrong more - it turned to be pretty decend piece of mystery/supernatural horror with an interesting, suspenseful plot. Each chapter is like a speeding rollercoaster of twists and turns. This gem deserves a lot more of recognition!
I was waiting to see this scene in the animated version so badly.
don’t think i can call it a hyperfixation anymore fam im afraid im just long term insane about this piece of media
