I have mentioned before that in literature, sharing a meal is symbolically an act of communion, usually for the purpose of making peace or coming to a mutual understanding.

At a symbolic level, this scene is Hawks and Endeavor trying to understand each other and their respective ideals. It's a peace offering and request for cooperation on Hawks' part. The strange thing is despite Endeavor's overbearing nature, he let Hawks choose the food and the location of their meal. As much as Hawks said he wants to sit back and take a supporting role, Hawks was the one taking all of the initiative and Endeavor was letting him lead with only moderate complaining.

And this meal did lead to an understanding between these two. It's only because of the understanding they reached here that Endeavor was able to understand Hawks' later message warning of the PLF. It wasn't a perfect understanding: they finished their meal together, but the restaurant was shattered before they could pay the bill. Hawks still kept his face and hands covered by his costume. He was still not being forthright about his intentions. He planned on using Endeavor as bait for the noumu without informing him. And Hawks was not being honest about why he wanted to direct Endeavor's Number One Hero career. Hawks phrased it in terms of not wanting to work hard, but it was in truth about his personal admiration of Endeavor and a systemic critique about the fragility of the existing system that needs heroes on alert at all times.

Notice that Hawks takes off his mask before he starts saying something truthful/outside of his role. Everything he said until this point was part of his façade.

And it's notable that the first genuine dialogue Hawks has is that he doesn't admire All Might. Not all hero characters in BNHA had All Might as their main inspiration, but until this point there wasn't a single hero character to say anything like "I never wanted to be like [All Might]". Endeavor was not the exception. He may not have liked All Might personally, but it was primarily due to envy. Endeavor wanted to be like All Might in that he wanted to be number one and the strongest.

It's interesting that the takeaways from Hawks' introductory chapter are that he's duplicitous, ambitious, and doesn't like All Might. His introduction unsettled the status quo of the story until this point because Act One revolved around All Might the Symbol of Peace and Number One Hero. But Hawks is established as a top hero character outside of All Might's orbit with ambiguous intentions.

if i wrote fics, i would def write about the endeavor hawks dabi triangle and make it about how dabi can get under hawks' skin like no one else and endeavor has to witness that and hawks loses his mind because he doesn't want to lose his nonchalance in front of mr. endeavor out of all people, and dabi just leans back and watches hawks be so weird about that man with morbid fascination like waowwww, you have no idea who my father really is but also waowwww, my father really saved your life and i can see why you feel indebted to him, i used to see him as my personal hero too. and endeavor is in the middle lost as hell because there hasn't been a single instance in which he truly understood his son or his wannabe son on a deeper level, he just knows there's sth weird going on and he doesn't even know yet that his son is gay ugh MUCH to unpack
