hc that zuko is autistic (he just like me fr) and has a firepit in his bedroom that he keeps lit at night, not for any temperature reasons but because he got used to having noise (of the ocean) when he slept on the ship, and now he can't sleep without it. also he makes popping noises with his mouth and snaps his fingers subconsciously as stims
This flashback in ATLA, Azulon becoming enraged with Ozai for disrespecting Iroh and the recently deceased Lu Ten, is usually interpreted as Azulon then ordering Ozai to kill Zuko. I disagree with this for two reasons. 1: We don’t actually hear Azulon say that, it’s only referred to by Azula (who was around seven or eight at the time and might have misunderstood what she heard) and by Ozai, years later, when he is taunting Zuko on the Day of Black Sun. Neither Azula nor Ozai are reliable narrators. 2: Azulon is, at the time of this flashback, the ruler of the Fire Nation who has just lost one of his only two grandsons and heirs. What kind of monarch loses one heir and then turns around and demands the death of another, especially when losing Zuko would hardly bother Ozai? My interpretation of this situation is Azulon ordered Ozai to give Zuko into Iroh’s care, replacing Lu Ten as Iroh’s heir, neatly removing any argument Ozai had about Iroh’s line having ended. Ozai of course would never accept this. He either lied to Ursa, claiming Azulon wished Zuko dead, or outright told his wife he’d kill Zuko before seeing him get ahead of him in the line of succession, thus manipulating Ursa to help him assassinate Azulon. I think this theory makes far more logical sense than ‘Azulon ordered the murder of his nine-year-old grandson’.
The servants are just so terrified by him at the beginning?? Because here is this obviously powerful fire bender, the avatars fire bending teacher, and their fire lord and he is literally the most unpredictable person ever in their eyes
Every other fire lord was at least a little predictable bc staff knew what fire lords and fire nation royalty acted like but here is this guy over here who never yells at them?? Who never hurts them?? Who never banishes or fires them??
The first time they ever saw him angry/disappointed at staff was when he was telling the cooks to never make roast turtleduckling ever again he doesn’t care how tender they are thank you very much
When he has to deal with a particularly condescending or war mongering general or politician that day, he’ll sneak off to the kitchens and just make rage tea
If someone doesn’t remind him to eat he just forgets?? So the Head Cook, a woman everyone can agree on is the meanest, toughest, strictest person around, sends food to him every few hours no matter how many times he’s told her in person she doesn’t need to
Zuko will just casually let slip some really horrifying fact and the staf will just be very disturbed bc your grANDFATHER ORDERED YOUR DEATH
“Oh yeah, but my mom killed him so it’s okay”
*distressed noises from background staff*
They are slowly beginning to piece together everything that happened to their fire lord during his exile using their combined knowledge from off hand comments they heard Zuko make
Zuko became an artist at a young age. Painting was encouraged by Ursa and Uncle Iroh, so he did it to keep himself occupied.
Eventually, it became more than a hobby. He was an artist down to his core, seeing things through a different lens than his family members.
Azula hated that there was another thing that Zuko was better at than her. However, Ozai didn’t like it, so she didn’t. It was that simple.
Under his sleeves, there were often ink writings and drawings.
His favorite things to draw, ironically, are dragons. Twisty shapes, fangs and wings.
Ozai, again, doesn’t approve and tries to keep Zuko occupied on something that he finds productive.
It doesn’t work.
After Zuko’s exile, most of his art is halted.
But sometimes, he starts rambling about ink and paper and dragons, and suddenly he feels a lot lighter.
Around a year and a half into his exile, he gets new brushes and waterproof ink from Uncle Iroh.
He vanished for about two hours, but when he was next seen there was ink on the walls like a fresh coat of paint.
‘“Mako, have you seen the Prince?” Firenze hummed from his spot on the deck.
“No, honestly. Maybe we left him at the last port?”
The captain laughed. “We can dream, Mako.”
Iroh raised his eyebrow. “He’s painting the hallway. If you’d like, you may join him.”
And so, Zuko gained two new painters. Over time, the entire crew painted the boat black and silver.’
Yeah, the crew painted with Zuko sometimes. It became ritual to paint over it when the salt began to wear away at it.
Zuko still has his whole honor complex, but it’s slightly detached from his actual personality due to the relationship that he had with his crew.
So when the Avatar shows up, he’s shocked instead of insistent to catch him. The sooner that he catches the Avatar, the sooner that he’d get locked away from the world.
So he may or may not have deliberately played cat and mouse with the Avatar.
When Zhao takes the crew, they all visit the prince one-on-one. Some with tears, others with somber hearts. They have a group hug and then they have to leave.
The first time Zuko saw the Northern Water Tribe, he felt a flurry of emotions.
First, awe at the beauty that the people had carved from the ice.
Then, anger that the fire nation was going to knock it down.
He craves the feeling of ink on his hands again.
And once they’re declared enemies of the state, he hopes that he’ll feel that again.
Artist Zuko really is one of the best things in the world!!😍
HE IS!! I love the idea of it being therapeutic for him (hence his characterization in All the Lights are Shining). I also love the idea of him just being super casual about it. I headcanon that it was something he had to learn as part of his formal education like all of the other noble kids, but he just became exceptional at it. His mother encouraged him (of course) and Iroh continued to do so once Zuko was in his care. So Zuko is just like, “Yeah. This is a skill I was required to learn, but it’s also one of my favorite hobbies and it helps me work through all of my emotions and trauma. And I guess I’m kind of decent at it?”
Also, when the Gaang finds out he can draw, Suki and Toph mercilessly tease Sokka about how much better an artist Zuko is than him. And Katara and Aang want Zuko to teach them how to draw. They keep asking him and he finally relents. It turns out Aang is pretty decent, but Katara is just as bad as Sokka. Zuko is just perplexed by that because Katara excels at so many things, so how is she so bad at this?
(I just have a lot of ideas surrounding artist!Zuko. 🥰)
Do we have confirmation that they're related? Nope. Do they make a bunch of similar faces? Yes. *shrug*
@spinaroos-47
“Whatcha got there?” Luz tapped the table in front of Hunter to get his attention. “One of Eda’s?”
He lifted the book to show her the title without answering. Why Won’t My Palisman Eat? And Other Problems You May Encounter with Your Lifelong Partner.
“Is Flapjack okay?!”
“Yes. Why wouldn’t they be?”
“Because you’re… reading a book about how palisman get sick?”
“Sure. Did you know that they heal like regular animals if they get hurt? Even though they’re made of wood? But that would mean they’re generating palistrom wood by eating regular food! So hypothetically speaking, you could generate an infinite amount of palistrom wood by cutting off pieces of a palisman and then feeding it so it could heal!” he reached up to the palisman nestled in his hair and scratched its head. “Not that I would. Anymore.”
“Found a game hack,” Luz joked, “Infinite palistrom wood glitch. Why are you reading the book if there’s nothing wrong with Flapjack?”
“The books at the emperor’s coven weren’t really about how to take care of a palisman. There were a couple, but, well, you know. Not much need to take care of them when your plan is to…” Hunter shook his head. “Anyway, there are a ton of weird things palisman can do.” He held up a different book, this one called The Legend of the Palistrom. “Not sure how accurate this is, it’s a mythic folklore kind of story about the first palisman, but there’s bound to be some truth in it, right? Because legends are usually based on fact. It was a nice story, though.”
Luz sat down at the table as he flipped the cover of a book back and forth.
“Supposedly, palisman can hold memories from the perspective of their witch, but no one’s said how to activate and view it yet, not in any of the books I’ve read. Is it like a memory in the mindscape where you can enter it? Or is it more like an echo mouse eating a book and being able to project it as something to watch? And—okay, get this, this is weird, a palisman can not only recognize descendants of its owner, BUT will also recognize palisman carved by its owner’s family as a kind of blood relative! But it DOESN’T recognize a palisman carved from its own tree as a sibling. That being SAID, there’s an old legend that if you carve your palisman from the same tree as the tree of your betrothed, you’ll be partnered for life. The explanation behind it is that your palisman is your lifelong partner, so if you carve yours from the same wood… but that doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it? I mean, if they don’t recognize each other as siblings regularly, why would partners matter? Unless it’s a combination of the family recognition AND being carved from the same tree? I don’t know, it’s probably just a romance legend that doesn’t have any fact built into it. Just sentiment, you know?”
“Probably,” Luz agreed, “It sounds sweet, though.”
“If you’re into that kind of thing. You know, all of the books mention that palisman all speak the same language, but I’ve DEFINITELY heard different sounds coming from them, and Gus and Willow’s don’t really make sounds at all—wait, hey, how do Gus and Willow know what they’re saying?!” He stood up abruptly, pushing his chair back and holding his hand out for Flapjack to turn into a staff.
“Where are you going?”
“To ask them. Duh.”
And in a flash of gold, he was gone.
Ok but Zuko using the knowledge he acquired during his banishment to help him as the Fire Lord. Like making small talk with Earth Kingdom dignitaries about their local foods that he enjoyed and even misses. Like having in-depth conversations with his captains about sea currents and navigation. Like, in the middle of a meeting with several high-ranking naval officials, pointing out flails in security, like how a person can cling to a Fire Nation ship for hours at a time, or climb aboard using hatches on the upper decks, or disguise themselves as a lower ranking guard with easily accessible spare armour….
Though none of his experiences can prepare Zuko for the long, awkward silence that comes after he admits to doing or at least knowing something illegal and/or completely buck wild
I was just reading For Hearth and Home by Haicrecendo on a03 and I was thinking how amazing it would be for Firelord Zuko to offer a daycare within the palace so parents don’t have to worry about their young children and can pick them up after work. I just love Our Firelord.
I love this so much
Zuko likes to check in on them (re: procrastinate from paperwork) and inevitably ends up on the ground getting used as a jungle-gym
The kids aren't really young enough to remember Ozai, and the idea of a monarch is nebulous and far-off. To them, Zuko is just Some Guy in pretty robes and with a shiny headpiece, who they can easily bully into getting them more snacks and letting them go hang out in the royal gardens and see the turtle-ducks
The new staff are horrified. Everyone else just laughs and continues going about their business. Another day, another toddler drawing on their Fire Lord's face while he naps on the floor.
Okay so like, after reading too many zuko adoption au’s, I may have (kind of but not really) made up my own 👉👈
I figured if we throw Zuko on literally anyone(they even gave the poor child to Hama once 😭😭), nothings stopping me from tossing him in that spirit library and calling it adoption. So in a 3am crisis I created the Library!Zuko au, where he gets adopted by the knowledge seeker foxes after bitch Ozai tries to kill him by dumping him in the desert and Wan Shi Tong just has to deal with it cause I said so. Naturally because I cant write I drew it instead
Theres more, but turns out im shy oops-
NIA OH MY FUCKING GOD IM IN LOVE WITH THIS ACTUALLY IN LOVE WITH THIS THAT BOTTOM ONE WITH HIM PETTING IT AND HIS LIL SMILE HOW HAVE YOU SUCKERPUNCHED ME WITH JUST SKETCHES???? AND THE THOUGHT OF WAN SHI TONG HATING HUMANS AND BEING REALLY BITTER INITIALLY BUT THEN SEEING HOW ZUKO JUST CRAVES KNOWLEDGE AND WANTS TO LEARN MORE THINGS DESPITE HIS FOREFATHERS INSISTING THAT THE FIRE NATION WAY WAS THE ONLY WAY, AND YET HERE IS THIS BURNT BOY WHO WANTS TO LEARN SWORDSMANSHIP AND PATIENCE AND WHO IS GENTLE AND HE’S KIND TO THE FOXES AND I- GSIUHIUSHG NIA WHAT THE FUCK
Another Library!Zuko sketch dump + some Song ✨
Zuko gets adopted by [insert character here]
what is Herdbalist Zuko's hair like?
YES. Finally, someone asking the IMPORTANT questions!
“Well I would have brought my comb. But you kidnapped me.”
“You are just not gonna let that go, are you,” Sokka said.
“Sokka,” Katara said. “Aang did pull him into the saddle. While he was saying ‘no.’ And then we didn’t ever bring him back.”
“Because there is an evil fire-shooty admiral guy after us! ‘Us’ including him! Which I am still waiting on an explanation for, but I will at least accept a ‘thank you Team Avatar for saving me!’ ”
“Well,” Spirit said.
“Do not–”
“I would have brought my gratitude–”
“–finish that.”
“But you kidnapped me.”
He didn’t even say it accusingly. He said it while scratching the sweet spot at the base of a lemur’s tail, smiling with airy indifference, as Katara sat behind him combing out the bison-flight tangles from his ridiculously luxuriant waves of hair.
“Did you leave your dignity behind, too?” Sokka accused. “What kind of man has hair down to his butt–”
“Longer than that,” Katara reports, running her comb through just a section of that hair because they would probably both have to be standing for her to get a full swipe in.
“–and lets another man’s little sister play hair stylist? Do you not know the danger of surrendering hair control to a little sister?”
“I can think of worse things a little sister could do.” Their demure firebender kidnappee continued to smile. Sokka would have really appreciated if he’d been a surly firebending prisoner instead.
“I’m going to give you hair loops,” Katara said. “Beads or no beads?”
“No beads!” Sokka snapped.
“Just do the opposite of whatever your brother says.”
“Beads!”
“I’m so glad you agree,” his little sister said, sickly-sweet, her smile matching the firebender’s smirk.
It was stupid how good his hair looked when Katara was done. All… loopy, and beady. And every day on the flight north it got more and more complicated because there wasn’t much to do on the back of a bison, until there were tiny braidy loops and swirls intertwining everywhere and a loopy-beady high bun, and still so much hair left to cascade down his back, and it didn’t even get sufficiently ruined when the Northern waterbenders attacked even though Sokka’s hair looked like a hare-possum had died in it.
And one of their warriors offered the guy a hand down from Appa when they got to the city. What was with that?
“She’s pretty,” said warrior sighed, as all that hair went swishing after Aang and Katara.
Sokka squawked.
“Sorry,” the guy said. “Your sister?”
Additional squawking ensued.
chena going from ‘i’ll break his legs’ to ‘you should have dragged him if it meant bringing him back to us’ is making me emotional and idk why
the addition of ‘(not adopted)’ genuinely suckerpunched me and i laughed for 20 whole seconds. 9/10
-1532/10. touch grass
7/10. the colloquial onomatopoeia of ‘haha’ immediately juxtaposing with the simple sentence declarative of ‘i cried’ is a really interesting language choice by this writer that might symbolise-
you terrify me so i’m giving you 10/10 in a desperate attempt to appease you
im beating you with a stick. get all star OUT of my bookmarks. but you get some pity points for the rage spelling. 2/10

these two both knew exactly what they were here for. they came they saw they conquered. these were the only notes for both bookmarks and to that i applaud them. 10/10
from a business standpoint i should give you minus points for quitting the fic but i’m giving you 8/10 anyway just because this response is the most mentally stable thing we’ve seen in taob nation since kanna was still in the fic
10/10 a classic a staple of the cult. get in bitches we’re going feral
-4/10. zuko baby YES. you hate to see a malewife winning. homophobic
lose points for the john mulaney reference just because i like to make @boomerang109′s life unnecessarily difficult. 4/10
this is literally the funniest thing anyone has ever said. this ao3 user just came for zuko’s fucking throat and i can’t even be mad at them because they are 100% correct in everything they said ‘sad. pathetic. poor little meow meow. bitch of the fire nation’. 10000/10
heyyyyyy @enbies-and-felonies aha *bites lip*. fuck you too <3. the descriptive writing here gains you points despite the slander on my name. 5.69/10

For that one anon who wanted to see Zuko Carrying Zi Se @hella1975
I bet Kanut and Iroh would constantly compete to be Zuko’s fav uncle once everyone meets and stuff lmao
@hella1975 I’ve always had a soft spot for surrogate dads but a whole SQUAD of surrogate dads???? A great blessing I never knew I needed. Thank you. I just have one request. Please destroy the ponytail I can’t do it, I can’t handle egg head Zuko I’m begging you-

drew some fanart from one of my favorite jetko AUs: boarding school! jet and zuko are sneaking some alone time on the school roof after closing hours
okay you can all blame @frccdomfightcr for this one bc we have this hc where zuko likes make jet laugh with shitty philosophy/psychology pick up lines
edit: apparently tumblr is resizing shit so here’s the dialogue if u can’t read:
zuko: hey jet jet: yeah? zuko: are you lacanian psychology? jet: uh– zuko: because a lot of people don’t understand you, but i do. jet: … jet: PFFHAHAHAOHMYGOD zuko: was that one good? jet: Y-YES!! AHAHAHA
Don’t panic, no not yet Pairing: Jetko—Rating: T A/N: dumb boys dumb snuggling dumb shenanigans dumb
jetko + ao3 tags. tags from @ao3tagoftheday
[IDs: five screenshots of jet and zuko from avatar accompanied by ao3 tags as captions. in the first image, jet and zuko are depicted from the legs up as they fight, in ba sing se. it is nighttime. they are back to back, fighting with their hook swords and dao swords respectively. the tag reads “there’s lots of fluff, but there’s also DUELS.” the second image is a wide shot of pao’s tea shop. jet and zuko are standing at opposite ends. both have their swords drawn and are in fighting stances. customers stand around the edges of the room where the tables are, looking on. the tag reads “a bi disaster and a gay disaster walk into a bar, that’s it that’s the story.” the third image is of jet and zuko in the doorway of a ship’s kitchen, ready to steal food. they are in wary, semi-crouched positions and they both have their swords drawn. the tag reads “arson as foreplay, we all knew this was coming.” the fourth screenshot shows jet and zuko standing next to each other at the train station in ba sing se. jet has his hands on his hips while zuko’s are at his side. the tag reads “less ‘opposites attract’ and more ‘two people from different sides of the asshole spectrum.’” the fifth screenshot is of jet and zuko duelling in ba sing se at nighttime. jet is holding his swords ready to parry, while zuko is swinging his own swords to attack. the tag reads “but there’s no romance here, maybe two percent romance, two percent romance and ninety eight percent REVENGE.” end ID]
What am I saying of course you do.
This ended up being way longer than I intended so I’ll put them under a cut, but let me know if you want more. I think about these two a lot.

ZUKO HCs PLEASE (and maybe some zukka if ya feel like it)
Zuko Headcanons!!
Zuko is terrified of lightning. I mean who wouldn’t be after your father and your sister both used it to try and kill you. Zukka side of things, Sokka absolutely holds Zuko during thunderstorms.
Zuko spends time with Uncle Iroh drinking tea at the Jasmine Dragon, and still helps his uncle make tea from time to time.
Zuko loves theater and hates the Ember Island players with a burning passion. On the other hand, Sokka loves the Ember Island players and will drag Zuko to see them. Zuko will subject himself to horrendous theater if it makes his boyfriend happy. Sokka will also go to classy theaters (even though he can find it sort of boring at times) for his boyfriend.
Zuko loves cats. Like he just adores them and absolutely makes a baby voice at them. Which was embarrassing the first time Sokka saw him do it but Sokka just thought it was cute.
Zuko likes having his hair played with and braided! Like he super loves having Sokka braid his hair (which I think Sokka would know how to do because he grew up with Katara and probably had to braid her hair at some point).
Baths! Baths are sooooo something I see Zuko loving. Like a good hot bath with a bath bomb and some Epsom salt. Like he is definitely a bath person.
Also, Zuko likes to cook. Like I can see him in a kitchen and cutting up stuff and making food. Like I know he can have anything done by servants but after his moral conflict there’s the scene where he basically insinuates that bossing around servants doesn’t make him feel happy. So I can see him wanting to make some of his own food.
Zuko is someone who has really good manners and always says thank you to the servants because he knows that they work hard.
He is not a fan of parties and formal settings. Having to go through all the political people he has to talk to just so he can get to a table to sit and then have to talk to more political leaders is really stressful. He’s not a people person.
He likes to garden. Specifically he likes to plant flowers in the garden and study them. He is just infatuated with the gentle yet brilliant plants.
Also I kinda headcanon Zuko as autistic because I feel like he definitely can get special interests. Like I can see him talking about all the flowers he has planted and how he plans the layout of the garden.
request by anon: Fire siblings post war headcannons? (This means disregarding the comics cause I don't like them nor the way they treat mental illness and Azula)
note: finally, my first official atla request is out! I loved this one sm, and I can't wait to ignore the comics and actually give Azula a chance and not mock and villianize mental illness, as we should! I also tried to make this as open to all ships as possible, just to be sure!
I have about 9 others either ready to go or in progress, coming up the next days and weeks, but I'm still accepting new ones, so if you're interested in that there's a link at the bottom on this post!
I really am the biggest supporter of Azula getting some much needed therapy
but I also think she's resist it at first?
her treatment starts far away from Caldera, the palace and Zuko
with healers and therapists and lots of mediation
Zuko probably ends up pushing off therapy for a solid while after becoming Fire Lord, being way to busy
Good old Ambassador Sokka and Uncle Iroh ends up literally kidnapping him and sending him to therapy when they're scared he'll just collapse
Zuko puts off requesting to see Azula for a good while
he's really unsure and nervous about it all, which is fair
but it's not just that, with therapy, time and experiencing what real love and a sense of family feels like, he feels a lot of hurt and sympathy for his baby sister
he starts getting nightmares about the aftermath of the last Agni Kai, and after a couple of weeks where it happens every night, he finally reaches out
he's surprised when he's told she'll she him whenever he's ready
this can be me just projecting how I act after trauma and big episodes, but I can see her not wanting to talk at first?
they're just in the same room, learning to just exist together again
Zuko has a lot to talk about, anyways
mundane things from the palace, stories about Sokka in the Fire Nation, about Iroh and his shop, little, simple things
after a while he starts talking about more serious topics, as he sees it clearly peaks her interest a little more
he tells her about his life as a refugee in Ba Sing Se, he swears she almost smiles when he tells her about the wonderfully awkward date with Jin, and he talks about the crew on his ship, and how terrible went when he tried to befriend the Gaang
the first time she says something again is when Zuko has had a little breakdown and chopped of his hair when he looked in the mirror and thought he started to look like Ozai
it's uneven and he has weird little bangs, but she just looks at him for a few seconds, and calmly states that the long hair wasn't working for him, anyways
Zuko tries so hard to stay chill, and he kinda manages, but he totally cries a little when he leaves her room
after that the visits starts becoming more of a conversation, and while they thread lightly, they're also feeling a new sense of... familiarity, maybe?
the first time Azula visits the palace goes surprisingly well
at this point, Zuko has spent a lot of time talking to Sokka about Azula and their rehabilitations, and Sokka is trying hard to be there for Zuko and make this as easy as possible
Azula finds him a little annoying at first, and on time she gets really annoyed and jokes that he can chill, she's not gonna try to kill Zuko again
Sokka s horrified, but Zuko actually laughs
the first time Zuko hears Azula laugh without it being out of someone else pain, and for the first time since the war ended, is at one of Katara's little jabs at Zuko
(that's just how she shows him she cares, it's the same kind of bickering she does with Sokka)
Azula actually barks out a real laugh and Katara forgets to be weary and actually grins at her
it's weird and awkward but also kinda really beautiful
Zuko and Azula starts having tea once a week, no matter how busy they are, and they keep that tradition even as they get older
I have some many aunt Azula headcanons, and I've kinda talked about them before, but I just need to add a few sorry
she totally feels super awkward when she first meets her as a baby
the first time she holds her she just looks at her and is like... holy shit... a whole tiny person... in my arms.... help..?
but it turns out Azula quite likes toddlers, esp when they get to that age where they can talk, but have yet to develop a filter
she's crazy protective of her, and Zuko kinda just appreciates it
but she also loves teaching Izumi ways to mess with Zuko, so much
whenever Zuko complains about it, he stops and realizes he kinds wouldn't want it any other way
the older they get, the more they both love gossip lmao
middle aged fire siblings spilling tea while drinking tea?
why, yes of course
request info - buy me a ko-fi - Tumblr masterlist
There’s only like half the staff that the palace should have because Ozai and Azusa fired/killed/mutilated/scared off/etc. the rest
So they’re all trying their hardest to do their jobs and their terrified of messing up in case he’s just like the rest of his family
They know he’s friends with the Avatar but you can never really be sure
At first they all stay out of his way
Then, a group of younger maids see Zuko and Aang feeding the turtle-ducks
Aang pushes Zuko into the pond and the maids are sure he’s going to set the boy on fire
But instead he just laughs and checks to made sure none of the turtle-ducks are hurt
A few days later, the cook walks into the meal hall to see how everyone’s meal is going
Instead he sees the Firelord in a heated debate about theatre with Suki while Aang, Katara, Toph and Sokka are in the middle of a food-fight
The cook makes the mistake of squeaking indignantly at the sight of his hard work all over thirteen year-old faces
When Zuko notices him he quiets the other teenagers down and apologises for the mess, the others quickly following his lead
Over time, the sergeants come to realise that the new Firelord is just a regular child
An eccentric child who owns a third of the entire world, but a child
By the time Zuko turns seventeen, the entire staff has warmed to him, even the new employees who had heard rumours about what Zuko’s predecessers did
He’s genuinely kind to them and interested in their lives in a way that they’d never experienced before, especially not from a noble
Eventually it became normal for Zuko to be found in the kitchen teaching servants how to make good quality tea
Zuko also offered hugs to them
Many of them had lost people to the war, and at first he did it as a way to comfort them
He was stiff and had obviously never done it before but the servants loved that he cared about them enough to step out of his comfort zone
He was also warm and very comfortable once he relaxed
The younger, bolder servants took advantage of this by hugging him whenever they could
At first it was when Zuko was alone, then one servant accidentally hugged him when he was in front of the Gaang
Sokka and Toph thought it was hilarious
Katara and Aang joined the hug
Suki comforted the servant after she freaked out and started crying
When Zuko adopted Druk, the entire staff helped raise him
Zuko
he's very good at masking about 90% of the time
struggles with social cues sometimes?
he walks a very odd line between missing social cues because autism and being hyperaware of social cues because abuse victim
positive attention is a little foreign to him - people flirt with him all the time and he just barrels right on through
he scripts things out everything. practices random conversations with turtleducks. has entire scrolls of "what to say if..." laying around his room.
unrelated but his customer service voice is ever-present in Official Political Meetings
a fascinating special interest in tea
can and will infodump at the drop of a hat
lots of finger stims (they're small and easy to hide)
facial expressions mean nothing folks
super smooth fabrics bother him
he doesn't really like how fire feels - his own is pretty nice, and aang's is usually okay, but everyone else's is sketchy
hates hates hates the texture of his scar
listen zuko just infodumps a lot
Thoughts on the idea of Zuko eventually learning to lightning bend post-series because he finally got to the point of being able to fully accept and move past all the awful shit that he went through?
Okay so once more disclaimer, i love how in the show Zuko did not have to learn lightning bending but instead was able to face his father by knowing how to redirect it. Anyhow, I love this idea and it put this scene in my head:
It was a nice evening, and that despite the fact there was a great thunderstorm coming over Ba Sing Se. Or maybe especially because of that, since it was the reason that Zuko, Aang, Katara, Sokka, Suki and Toph had interrupted their tour through the town to seek refuge in the Jasmin Dragon together. Seeing his nephew surrounded by his friends, so relaxed and always with a small smile on his face, never failed to make him happy as well. Iroh watched them from the door frame to the kitchen from where he had juts gotten new tea. Sokka was now pretending to bend the lightning that struck outside from time to time by snapping his fingers.
“You know, that is not how you actually lightning bend, right?” Zuko interrupted his little performance.
“Well, my deepest apologies you highness if I put dishonor on your high art of beding lighting.” Sokka dramatically took a deep bow. “Would you care to enlighten us on the matter?”
Iroh smiled. Of course Sokka would ask that. That boy seemed to be curious about everything, and never seemed to stop until he fully understood how something worked. He would make a great member of the white Lotus one day, he thought.
“Well, I never said I could it myself. Uncle once tried to teach me but it literally just blew up in face because of my inner turmoil back then” For a moment, Zuko seemed lost in the memory of back then, and a trace of the old pain returned into his his eyes. It quickly vanished, however, as Katara softly put her hand on his shoulder, and he continued speaking new enthusiasm. “But in theory, if you were to do it, you would first have to divide the positive and negative energy to create an imbalance.”
“Like so?” Sokka made a motion that looked like his was slow clapping.
“No, more like this.” Zuko made the required circular motion with his arms “And then you would have to let them collide.”
At first, Iroh could not believe his eyes. But suddenly, there it was, with no shadow of doubt. A small lightning, flickering around his nephews hands and dipping his surprised face in purple light. He closed his eyes for a moment as he felt tears in them. Yet, he could not prevent one from running down his cheek when he heard Zuko call him, proud like a little kid that had produced his first flame: “Uncle, uncle look! I can lightning bend!”
