The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced an ambitious plan to build a space base between Earth and the Moon, which astronauts could use as a kind of halfway house on lunar missions – or as a launchpad for new explorations elsewhere in the Solar System.
While details on the proposal aren’t yet available, the ESA says this ‘human outpost’ in space could be built within the decade – and the organisation will be actively considering the plan at a conference later in the year.
In addition to providing a “crossroads in space” to help with lunar research missions and other space-faring expeditions, this base – situated approximately halfway between Earth and the Moon – could also serve as a successor to the International Space Station (ISS).
The ISS is scheduled to come out of service in 2024, after some 26 years of active duty, and it’s not yet clear how space agencies around the world plan to fill the void left by this massively important space research facility.

So Vulcan. I love it.
Study to learn, not to pass: The exam is important, but it’s more important to really learn this material so you can apply it in a real-world setting after graduation. You’ve chosen to do this course for a reason - remember the bigger picture here.

i guess the real question is how can you not like tesla
he thought women would eventually rule the world because we’re the dominant sex
he liked pigeons
he was a vegetarian
he was a babe
he was shy
he hated edison
he’s perfect
Yup, as long as you’re ok with that time he went bonkers and tried to build a death ray.
Don’t we all want to build a death ray?
I want to build a death ray…
Are you serious the death ray was the best part
Millenials, y'all need to step up and vote. The future is yours now. We old folks failed. Vote and run for office, or else give it all away to white dudes like this.

you: yeah
me: you know what else is beautiful
you: (blushing) what?

As a student of color in STEM, that scene perfectly describes what I think about everyday. Here’s a quick list of everything that I am doing:
I have a 3.71 GPA
I volunteer 10+ hours every week
I am a part-time researcher on campus (at some point I’ll make a post about my research)
I am helping to develop a CubeSat as a part of an team of undergraduate students
and I am developing my own educational outreach student organization to bring more students of color into STEM
and you know what?
I probably still won’t get as far as rich, white students who haven’t worked nearly as hard as I have. I grew up just above the poverty line, so I don’t have the connections that those students have, it sets me apart, and it sets me behind.
The students who have those connections were able to get internships and research positions in high school, without even trying. Meanwhile, I got my first research position half of the way through my second year of college because I worked my ass off during my first year and the first half of this school year. My story is in no way unique. This is the experience of thousands of students of color around the country. We have to work so hard to get half as far as our white counterparts, and it’s just bullshit.
Today was when I realized just how bad my obsession with space is. Only one of the books is for a class that I am taking. Since some of the titles aren't visible the books are: Why Mars? The Future of Solar System Exploration Cosmos by Carl Sagan Moons & Planets Introduction to Electrodynamics Fundamental Planetary Science Orbital Mechanics Remote Sensing Physics of the Solar System Fundamentals of Astrodynamics Classical Mechanics Fundamentals of Space Systems Statistical Orbit Determination
I feel so goddamn trapped by revision and I’ve been away from home for so long that every time someone asks me how I am I want to grab them and shout “I WANT TO SEE MOUNTAINS AGAIN, GANDALF. MOUNTAINS!”
The acronym for one of the instruments on-board the Juno spacecraft is JEDI (Jupiter Energetic-particle Detector Instrument). Whoever spent the time to come up with that acronym is my hero.

“the millenium falcon would wipe out the enterprise in seconds” lmao the enterprise is just an innocent science class floating thru space…. all they wanna do is look at some rocks… kiss an alien…. find some space plants….. why would you fight that its not a battleship theyre just nerds…… leave them olone
1. Tidy up your desk/work area. Believe me, it’s so much easier to concentrate once your surroundings are clean and smell nice.
2. Wash your teeth and face before every study session. It will make you feel clean and more awake.
3. Keep a big bottle of water near you and stay hidrated throughout the whole session.
4. Set a few goals (not very many) to accomplish in your session. Do that in order to set a purpuse, but don’t be overoptimistic, it’s bettr to focus on your priorities.
5. Put on something that you feel comfortable in. Whatever it is, a onezie, pyjamas, tracksuit bottoms, anything that doesn’t bother you and helps you focus on work.
6. Take 20 minute breaks every one or two hours (depending on your stress level)
7. If you tend to play with/pull your hair, try to keep it up in a hairstyle that keeps it out of the way. This goes out to my trich friends and anyone who obessively plays with their hair as a way to destress. Just figure out the best way to keep your hair out of your head (haha) for the longest time possible.
18/3/2016 | Day 2/100 Started my day finishing off preparation for Monday’s planetarium show, even got to do a practice show for my friend. Then I met with a representative from UW’s McNair Scholar program office, and then finished my day with a nice bike workout while reading a publication on a thermal drill head for use in exploring inside the ice of Europa and Enceladus.
I should’ve posted this yesterday, whoops. 17/3/2016 || Day 1/100 of productivity I finished my final exams for Winter Quarter on Wednesday; I’m officially on spring break, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be productive. I did some reading and planning for Monday’s UW Math Day planetarium show. Also, I finally organized my desk!
Student: Can we write on both sides of this paper?
Professor: You are free write on all six sides.
Happy International Women’s Day to all the fabulous Trek fans who believe a better and more equal future is possible.
Happy Valentine’s day everyone!

I’m hilarious
i put the pics i used for inspiration side by side with mine and. … holy shit
I have seen many “Space achievements 2015” articles and posts leaving international accomplisments completely out, so here are some of them:
China National Space Administration’s Chang’e-3 landed on the Moon on 14 December 2013, becoming the first spacecraft to soft-land since the Soviet Union‘s Luna 24 in 1976.
It became the first true “lifting body” vehicle, which reached a near-orbital speed and then returned back to Earth without any help from wings.
Japan Aerospace eXploration Agency’s Akatsuki is the first spacecraft to explore Venus since the ESA’s Venus Express reached the end of its mission in 2014.
Rosetta spacecraft, the first to drop a lander (named Philae) on a comet, entered orbit around 67P in 2014 and continues to orbit the body. On June 13, European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, received signals from the Philae lander after months of silence.
