TIL that the English word “Lord” in the sense of the head of an estate comes from an Old English word of Germanic origins, hlāfweard, later hlāford, later lord. 

Normally I wouldn’t remark on my romps through etymology, but “hlafweard” is a compound of hlaf, or loaf, and weard, which means guardian (see also Ward or Warden, etc). Meaning that when you call someone a lord you are calling him an esteemed keeper of the bread.

Lady also derives from hlaf, but in this case hlafdige or bread kneader. She makes the bread, he monitors it. Women have to do all the work as usual. 

Now, the reason I was looking this up was that I wanted to develop a gender-neutral analogue to lord/lady; there are analogues already out there naturally, but the Shivadh must be different and anyway I didn’t like the ones I’d seen suggested online. 

Given that the origins of Lord and Lady aren’t all that strongly gendered anyway (they’re about what the person does, not what their gender is), I decided that if a woman is a bread-kneader and a man is a bread-guarder, a nonbinary person should be A BREAD EATER, which would be Hlafetan.  

Thus I present to you the gender-neutral analogue to Lord or Lady: Ledan.

Outertale Flames Tutorial~

A follow-up to this ask!! I apologize if any of this is unclear, I’ve never done a tutorial before XP ALSO - I do all of my stuff in PaintTool Sai, so some layer modes might not match for those of you with other programs!

1) First things first, I color everything in the dark blue in my color palette. This is the darkest color I’m going to use, everything is lighter from here.

2) In a new clipping layer above the base color, I use either an airbrush or a watercolor brush to add a bit of light to the lower half of the face. I use the lightest blue on the palette, and the layer mode is set to “Lumi & Shade”

3) Next I color the eyes and mouth if needed. I use the same light blue on a new layer. The opacity is set to around 80% and the layer mode is “Lumi & Shade” again.

4) On to the purple! New layer, also on “Lumi & Shade”, and I use an airbrush or watercolor tool. I basically do what I did for the lower face, except the purple is coming down from the top.

5) New layer! This time it will be set to “Overlay” and I use the pink! With a regular brush. When I am doing this, I want the pink to sort of swirl out from his forehead and travel in whatever direction his flames are angled. I then take a blur tool, and very lightly blur the ends, just to make it look a little neater.

6) New layer again! No layer mode this time (you can totally put it on a layer mode, I just prefer not to). I use the same brush tool as I did with the pink and do the same thing with the yellow. Swirl it up from the forehead and in the direction of the flames.

7) New layer! “Lumi & Shade” 80%(ish) Opacity! Same thing with the pink and yellow! There will be less room, so I also put a little streak down on his neck.

8) This step is optional, I just do it to give the color a little more vibrancy. I run each color over itself with a big airbrush in a new “Overlay” layer. It helps harmonize the colors in a way.

9) S P A R K L E S This is on a new layer, the mode is set to “Luminosity”. Then on a new “Lumi & Shade” layer, I airbrush some of the light blue over the eyes to make them glow.

10) LAST STEP! On a new clipping layer above the lines, I use a darker variant of each color to color the lineart. Above that, I make an “Overlay” layer and draw on the lenses of the glasses with white.

And that’s it! You now have a glittery star boy. I hope this was helpful! Honestly, this is just how I do it, you can do it any way you want. If there’s any confusion, I’ll do my best to clear it up :D

I have had a dumb thought but like feral cat sterek au but like in the sense that Derek’s the feral cat.

Like in the first or second season stiles get really tired trying to communicate with everyone and no one communicating back. After one last shove from Derek, he’s fed up. Stiles is trying his hardest and nothing is working. He feels a little insecure and frustrated that the pack doesn’t like him but he can move past that. They don’t need to like him to work with him and that will only work if Derek is on board.

Expect Stiles has no idea on how to get Derek to talk to him. Derek barely tolerates him on a good day, let alone actually listens to him about things, especially things about the pack.

He only makes the connection after visiting Scott at work and hearing him talk about a feral cat. Ironic isn’t it. He immediately goes home and researches how to make friends with feral cats.

He begins to visit more often and not just on days where danger is imminent, so Derek doesn’t associate him with danger but rather something good. He takes to running his hands along furniture and leaving his clothes around where ever Derek is staying, to add his scent and familiarize Derek with it. He becomes more patient, well as he can be with his personality and adhd. Ever so slowly things Derek and stiles come to an understanding, and Stiles can really peel back the layers that make up Derek hale.

(Derek also begins to learn how stiles brain works and functions and about adhd; all his reference to humans were mostly the Hales and high schoolers but he can barely interact with regular human let alone, stiles. No one quite sets a precedent on how to interact with stiles, anyway. Derek also learned how stiles loves being human but sometimes it hurts not feeling like pack.)

Stiles is so surprised when it begins works?? Derek takes more of his suggestions if Stiles talks in a more calming and overall gentle voice. They are able to support each other ideas while still pointing out flaws. They work as a team. The pack get closer than before.

Stiles is more aware of the boundaries of skin between them; only laying touch to Derek when he gets permission. But when he can offer hug or a hand resting on Derek shoulder or neck he does.

But most of all the food that Stiles has painstakingly cooked, dropped off, and shared with either just Derek or the entire pack has lead to a better relationship. He should have known that the way to a wolf’s heart was through their stomach.

What stiles doesn’t realize is that he was accidentally both courting Derek and cementing his place as pack mom. 

I love me a pseudo-historical arranged marriage au but it always nudges my suspension of disbelief when the author has to dance around the implicit expectation that an arranged marriage should lead to children, which a cis gay couple can't provide.

I know for a lot of people that's irrelevant to what they want from an Arranged Marriage plot, but personally I like playing in the weird and uncomfortable implications.

So, I've been thinking about how you would justify an obviously barren marriage in That Kind of fantasy world, and I thought it'd be interesting if gay marriage in Ye Old Fantasy Land was a form of soft disinheritance/abdication.

Like, "Oh, God, I don't want to be in this position of power please just find me a boy to marry", or, "I know you should inherit after you father passes but as your stepmother/legal guardian I think it'd make more sense if my kids got everything, so maybe consider lesbianism?", or "Look, we both know neither of our families has enough money to support that many grandkids, so let's just pair some spares and save both our treasuries the trouble".

Obviously this brings in some very different dynamics that I know not everyone would be pinged by, but I just think it'd be neat.
