Realizing It’s Mutual (ID In Alt)

Kabru and Laios from Dungeon Meshi, 3 page black and white comic. Begins with a shot of both their hands laying against a surface, Kabru’s against an opened book, fingers holding a page. Text reads, from Laios: There’s a lot I still don’t know about you. Kabru, leaning his cheek against his hand, doesn’t look up, responds: Does that mean you’ve finally taken an interest in me? He lets go of the page and reaches over to tap his finger against Laios, who jolts in surprise. Kabru continues: As in… getting to know me? In Kabru’s thoughts: Is this too much teasing for him? Ah, well…

Kabru’s thoughts continue, looking up now to Laios: I’m just kidding either way… It then pans to Laios, his eyes darting to the side shyly, a troubled frown, and with blushy cheeks. Sparkles are seen around him, an added effect of Kabru’s perspective. Then pans to a comical Kabru, widened eyes, against a black panel with a crack through it. Laios says: “Uh… Can’t I..? Or is that— HUH?!” Kabru leaps from his hair, reaching over and grabs Laios by the lower half of his face aggressively. Laios gapes in shock.

Kabru, holding Laios’ face, peers closely at him just a few centimeters from his face. Laios looks back, the surprise and blush still evident, as though waiting with bated breath. Kabru eventually lets go, flops back onto his chair — and then immediately buries his face into his hands as he thinks to himself: NOOO WAY!!!! Is this real? He isn’t the type to joke about this. I haven’t seen him make that expression to humans except for Sh-. The text cuts off there. Meanwhile, Laios is at the other side of the table, looking confused and worriedly saying: Kabru?

post canon labru is so fucking peak are you kidding me. the king of melini and his most trusted advisor. his right hand man. whispering in his ear. a regal wolf and the little raven perched beside him. sneaking around the castle at night. HAND KISSING. oh my god. kabru needs to take his king's hand in his and kiss it while looking up at him through his eyelashes.

the king of melini, the devourer of all things horrible, wrapped around kabru's finger. like. this guy ate a demon and hes just like. a big dog around him. like its sick. sole survivor of his hometown and now he's got a king warming his bed at night. scratching under his chin and calling him a good boy right after a meeting.

im just. so in awe. kabru looked at laios and went "im going to whisper in his ear if its the last thing i do" and by god he did it.

there was a moment when the people in the movie theatre and the capitol audience in the stands were laughing at the same things, having the same reactions to the games, to the deaths, to flickermans jokes, to the doctor's announcement...i wonder aren't we watching it for entertainment too

suzanne collins' books may exist in popular culture as "dystopian", but they have always been a meticulous and startlingly close social critique of our world. at what point does our own idolization of the movies and the books repeat that story? we watch just as the capitol audience does.

all dystopia eventually crosses a line from realistic futurism to current relevancy. how long will it take us to realize we've already crossed that line with these books? and the very people who need to realize this are the ones in that audience...real or fake, we're the same: consuming and consuming.
