Sakuma painting I just finished + WIP of him and an older Hiroto I've been wanting to post but I don't have a complementary piece to post him with. More talk under read more
Supplies used:
Holbein acryla gouache set curated by Rebecca green
Art Philosophy gouache (underpainting only)
Daler Rowney and Lyra synthetic brushes
Makeup brushes I no longer use for makeup purpose but performed better than my painting ones
I'm practicing painting again. This time using the Holbein Acryla Gouache set I bought for my birthday this January. I got myself acrylic gouache than regular gouache because my painting style is closer to acrylic and oil's than watercolors' (I'm really not good with watercolor)
Holbein's acrylic gouache performed really well so far. I love how opaque the paints are except for the gold color. I think it should serve a different purpose, like say, for glazing, than the opaque paints.
One complain I have for the Holbein arylic gouache is how quick they are to dry and the stickiness of it, so I had to pick more paint and use a bigger brush to fill a big area. I read a review that the Liquitex paints are less sticky and I wanted their set but they're too expensive in my country (Indonesia)
I really wanted to try the dry brush technique and I'm glad I did it pretty well on the left Sakuma painting. I rely on it to create color transitions because of how the colors laid previously show under the dry brushed paints. Honestly it's not that different than my digital art style where I keep brushing to create a feeling of gradient. Speaking of which it was a painting of this frame but I chose the wrong colors so the vibe ends up different lmao
The Sakuma on the right was rushed because I got too tired to continue further so he looks wonky with muddy colors. He's still my son even if he's a bit fugly. But yeah I had so much fun with this piece, I'm planning to do more traditional arts from now on, maybe I will try soft pastel too? Perhaps
i doodled this when i was extremely sleep deprived and i just now realized that the fluffy penguin chicks drawn here are of KING penguins... my cringefail moment

When my mutuals dont post for a long time and I notice I imagine them like wandering a lonely mountain in a flowing cloak at dusk. Holding a little lantern. Yknow. and i always wish them well on that imaginary dramatic journey

Discussions of what "counts" as "canon" queer representation fall apart the second you start talking about media older than about five years or so. If your only metric for "canon queerness" is a character looking directly into the camera and explaining their identity in specific, modern, US-American-English terminology, you're not going to get a good picture of what queer media looks like. If your barometer for what counts as "canon" requires two characters of the same gender to kiss on-screen, you're not going to get a good picture of what queer media looks like.
Dr. Septimus Pretorius (portrayed by Ernest Thesiger in 1935's Bride of Frankenstein) was never going to look directly into the camera and explain his sexuality in 2024 terms, but he remains an icon in queer media history. You cannot look at that character (blatantly queer-coded in the manner of the time, played by a queer man in a film directed by another queer man) and tell me that he isn't a part of queer media history.
To be honest, even when discussing modern queer media, I would argue that the popular idea of what "counts" as "canon" is very narrow and flawed. I've seen multiple posts in the past few days that say the Nimona movie is "implied" trans representation, and I just...no, y'all, it's not "implied," it's an allegory. The entire damn movie is about transgender struggle, and the original comic is deeply tied into N.D. Stevenson's own queer journey. It isn't subtle. You cannot look at that movie and pretend that it isn't about trans struggle. It's blatant, and to say that Nimona "isn't canonically trans" is a take that misses the story's entire message, and the blatant queerphobia that almost kept the movie from happening. (I wrote a five thousand word essay about the topic.)
Queer themes, queer coding, queer exploration, and queer representation can all exist in a piece of media that doesn't seem to have "canon queer characters" on the surface. Most queer characters are never going to be able to explicitly state their specific identity labels, be it due to censorship or just due to the fact that scenes like that don't fit in some narratives. Some stories aren't conducive to a big "so what's your identity?" scene.
Explicit, undeniable, "this is my identity in no uncertain terms" scenes are very important and radical, and I'm not saying they shouldn't ever exist. I am saying that you can't consider those scenes the only way for queerness in a piece of media to be "canon."
the key to not fanonizing your faves is to simply become academia-brained about it. never make a statement about a character you can’t back up with at least three references to the source material
mister loveless, how do i tell the difference between "this work has deeper themes than the deceptively simple surface level story may let on" and "pinning images to a corkboard and connecting them with red string"? i feel like i'm doing the second one with this book i just got done reading, but i can't tell.
honestly there's nothing wrong with reading deeper meaning into apparently surface-level "what it says on the tin" narratives, as long as you can support them and be open to contention/criticism when you present your ideas. even if the creator didn't intend for those themes to be present, or most people don't acknowledge it, that doesn't make your interpretation automatically invalid and objectively wrong. if you're on, like, "the dark and twisted secrets of [cartoon for literal babies]" levels of theorycrafting, yeah, okay, maybe it's time to take a step back and ask yourself if this is really worth your time. but also literally all art is political and has the potential for infinite interpretation beyond the surface level - all art is shaped by the society we live in and the lives that interact with it, directly and indirectly. so pinning images to a corkboard and connecting them with red string is literally fine. even if it only means something to you personally. that's the great thing about art - it's both a rewardingly communal and highly individual experience!
sometimes i forget that interfaith relationships/marriage are still a big deal to some people in this day and age and i feel transported to 1800s discourse whenever i even hear the word. like what
i see fanart reposting especially uncredited both on tumblr and twitter which has been upsetting me lately. you can't be against AI generated images when you don't put respect in works made by others like that
Don't post another person's art without their permission under any circumstances. If you need to gush about the characters or your otp then post the link of it on the post where you're gushing over it without uploading their art. This is like the first fandom etiquette you should learn jfc
hey by the way for the record, there is functionally no difference between most gendered products. womans shampoo just has more floral scent options than mens. womens razor blades are just colored pink. a purse is a bag
this is inspired by an actual post i saw on the r/ftm subreddit genuinely asking if it was SAFE to use men’s shampoo before being on t for fears of it BURNING HIS SKIN??
I made the same edit with different sprite to tape on my room's wall 😔
Felt it was necessary to do that w him
Btw, you can donate to menstrual hygiene kits for Sudanese women, which I would highly recommend if you can

it's very surreal to see posts about palestine dwindling down after the ceasefire. israel is still blocking aid to and trying to make life difficult for palestinians in gaza. we still have to continue to speak up about gaza.
in this ceasefire, many palestinians are trying to rebuild in attempts to try and return to what they had before the genocide. despite the heavy and unbearable loss of life that gaza has experienced, her people continue to try to make a better world for their children.
alaa is a mother of two young children. she wants to rebuild her house and get a better future for her children. please have heart and consider helping her out. her fundraiser has been verified.

Dealing with executive dysfunction and ADHD becomes so much easier when you stop trying to do things the way you feel like you should be able to do them (like everyone else) and start finding ways that actually work for you, no matter how “silly” or “unnecessary” they seem.
For years my floor was constantly covered in laundry. Clean laundry got mixed in with dirty and I had to wash things twice, just making more work for myself. Now I just have 3 laundry bins: dirty (wash it later), clean (put it away later), and mystery (figure it out later). Sure, theoretically I could sort my clothes into dirty or clean as soon as I take them off and put them away straight out of the dryer, but realistically that’s never going to be a sustainable strategy for me.
How many garbage bins do you need in a bedroom? One? WRONG! The correct answer is one within arms reach at all times. Which for me is three. Because am I really going to get up to blow my nose when I’m hyperfocusing? NO. In allergy season I even have an empty kleenex box for “used tissues I can use again.” Kinda gross? Yeah. But less gross than a snowy winter landscape of dusty germs on my desk.
I used to be late all the time because I couldn’t find my house key. But it costs $2.50 and 3 minutes to copy a key, so now there’s one in my backpack, my purse, my gym bag, my wallet, my desk, and hanging on my door. Problem solved.
I’m like a ninja for getting pout the door past reminder notes without noticing. If I really don’t want to forget something, I make a physical barrier in front of my door. A sticky note is a lot easier to walk past than a two foot high cardboard box with my wallet on top of it.
Executive dysfunction is always going to cause challenges, but often half the struggle is trying to cope by pretending not to have executive dysfunction, instead of finding actual solutions.
