Heol... Remember OgCale didn't use to set foot in the study? I may be overthinking here but what if that has something to do with the large full body mirror in his bathroom? Was it his secret study? So that he could secretly study while keeping up his trash act? It used to take multiple attempts from Ron to wake Cale up. Did he use to stay up late to study?
The reason why Cale always says he doesn't want to become Duke/Prime Minister/God is because there will be too much work and he won't be able to slack... It's not actually that he won't be able to , but that he won't be able to allow himself to. As we've seen, Cale (Kim Roksoo) is someone with a great sense of responsibility. He goes around solving other people's problems as a hobby. Do you think that guy would be able to neglect his duties and responsibilities even if he wanted to? His sense of responsibility, his conscience, wouldn't allow him to slack. That's why he doesn't want a position of importance. He's tired of being given responsibilities and not being able to ignore them.
getting to know me for ~5 months or so then on month 6 things start to slowly click for you that ive clearly been trying to manufacture situations where you get struck by lightning
Kim Roksoo is OG choicale’s secret love child from the future who went back to the past to save them from inevitable doom real not fake definetly happened
i’m gonna cry i just realized the reason marcille and izu gravitate towards chil is becuase they both lost their father at a really young age and he instinctively fills that role around them because they remind him of his kids 😭
I think we as a fandom need to talk more about cale's lack of reaction to his ancient powers. Like one day one just started speaking in his head and he just was like. okay this is happening now. And over time the number of ancient powers speaking grew. And cale was just like wow ok new family members only in my mind this time.
Just a reminder that every day is "Kim Rok Soo stay alive, being alive is the best." Day.
this is what dvawtk could have been
reading some cale quotes for fic purposes and i can't believe how much you can forget when you blitz through 1000+ chapters in less than two months.
like, cale curses so much. so much. i guess i didn't really internalize it since it was spread out over the whole novel, but he has such a dirty mouth and literally every time he mentions his enemies, he's cursing up a storm.
"i don't care if he's lived a thousand years or not, that shithead is a fucking bastard from now on." cale henituse, on the greatest threat of the whole part one of the novel. he's so eloquent.
i forgot how snarky his internal voice is. actually, maybe not forgot. just, kind of got used to it? until i stopped registering the absolutely sick burns he keeps dishing out on the regular.
it takes him until chapter 270 to realize that he should have just let choi han beat him up. that seems like a lot, but we've still barely reached the eastern continent. adin is still alive. cale doesn't even know who the white star is. the trouble hasn't even started.
also, at one point he actually admits to being raon, on and hong's parent??? out loud??? i can't believe i missed that, the whole dodori thing distracted me.
"raon. I’m someone who cannot forget. don't be like me." i didn't actually forget this one, but it feels like a gut punch every time i read it again.
"Would you save me, even if I was weak?"
And you know what? He did
One of his indignity trials was to save (Not)Raon again
He came up with an entire plan to drug everyone and spent quite a bit of time with the preparations for it.
Put some poison in their drinks, wait for them to fall unconscious, take the key, and free the dragon. Easy, right?
And then, as soon as the torturer took out the whip he was like "Nope" and immediately threw hands to release him right then and there, plan be damned
Cale
Who hates fighting and has avoided it as much as humanly possible, and has made a point several times about not wanting to
Yeah, that Cale
the contrast between tang bo dying in the arms of his best friend vs chung myung dying cold and alone
some of my favorite choi han moments are the ones where he explicitly admits that cale is holding his leash.
like that one time the enemy called cale choi han's owner.
and choi han agreed. what's with that?? it's making me feral.
the way choi han takes pride in listening cale's orders. he wants to be good so bad. he's so happy when he can do what cale asks him to.
and this?? he's defying his friend and the future king in front of all of his vassals. telling the absolute ruler of your kingdom in the middle of a crisis that 'cale-nim's orders supersede your own' is ballsy as hell. choi han has no place for politeness when cale's orders are in question.
once again, i'm going absolutely insane at this level of loyalty.
I love the "came back wrong" trope but from the opposite side.
Imagine you are dead. And then you are RIPPED from the embrace of decay into the world of the living again. Your memories are hazy and you don't recognize any of these people, but they act like they're close to you? Like they love you? So you try to get your memories back, to act like you belong here, but everybody tries to forget you died. And you can't. It is omnipresent. And just trying to grapple with that fact pushes the people who "love" you away, and they're incapable of understanding, and they're so confused, what's wrong N̶̄̀O̶͛͗T̷̉́ ̷͋͝Y̴̎̌Ȍ̴̈U̸̓R NÄM̴̃͑E̵̾̇? And you just need them to understand, you aren't that person! You aren't! You don't know who that person is! You don't know why any of this is happening, but they're unwilling to bend, they keep insisting you are that person, your memories will come back, everything will be normal again, and you want to scream and cry and claw yourself open to show them you're different. Your existence as a being wholly separate from whoever you "used to be" is a sin unto itself. All you can do is scrabble for life and to them, you're killing whoever they loved to do it.
just. lots of fun in that concept, you know?
The three distinct types of found family:
Commits crimes together.
Fights crimes together.
Constantly switching back and forth between the other two at a horrifying speed.
Too? too??? You mean to tell me there's two of them??
Now I'm in the middle of feeling bad for Lee Soo Hyuk because he had to deal with the aftermath of their antics or to give him the side eye because it's very likely that he was the main instigator of said antics
Channeling my inner Eruhaben with this one:
Cale needed that evil god's test. Not only to fight despair, but also for his mental health.
He needed to see that there was a world where "Kim Rok Soo" was not left to survive alone. He needed to see all his "what ifs" happen. He needed to resolve all the regrets of "Kim Rok Soo" to fully live as Cale Henituse. Because even if it wasn't his world, he now knows that a "Kim Rok Soo" was happy, surrounded by people he loves, people who would survive with him.
That is how he can loosen the shackles of fear of being alone again as Cale. "We will all survive" is not just a random mantra for him. He needs it to be true. He has had so much loss and grief in his life.
Even if he doesn't really say so, that grief was what kept him going. To "not waste" the sacrifices of all those who saved him, he kept surviving. But that is also why he's reckless despite "valuing" his life.
I think, subconsciously, he thinks that if he can save more people, then that would be a good "payment" for those who saved him. His "slacker life" is basically world peace. 🤭
Back to the point... The test showed him Kim Rok Soo and everyone he cares for survive, so now he has more courage and less doubt to face WS because he wants a life like Parallel KRS', as Cale Henituse.
dude having a platonic crush on someone is so weird, cause you wanna be around them and talk to them all the time, you always think about them, and you constantly wanna hug them and hold hands (if you like physical touch) with them but the thought of being romantic in any way with them is just extremely uncomfortable
liking someone platonically is so embarrassing like. yeah i admire you. yeah i think about you all the time. yeah i look forward to every time i see you even if it's only for a minute. yeah it's all platonic and yeah i couldn't explain this because it'd sound romantic. fucking hell
You know one of my favorite things about this novel?
Is that Cale (Well, Kim Roku Soo) actually acts his age (36)
I personally haven't read many Isekais aimed at male audiences, so I can't speak for those
I have, however read quite a bit of Otome Isekais
And one of the things that annoys me the most about the genre, is when the protagonist, usually an adult woman, gets reincarnated into a baby, a child or a teenager and you sometimes forget their actual age because some of the things they do, some of the decisions they make are /baffling/ when you remember they're a grown ass adult
But with Cale is quite the opposite, people around him are often left scratching their heads at some of his actions and level of maturity ("Aren't you supposed to be 18-20?")
Hell, one time he told Raon that he is "30 years older than him" only to remember mid-phrase that nope, he's actually supposed to be only 15 years older
-Spoilers for P1-
And it's also very funny when Alberu finds out that Cale is, in fact actually older than him, his reaction is pure gold because he's supposed to be the hyung around here you know?

Can you believe this is the plot of devil venerable's first chapter
