The basics of Beginning
Being a new witch is terrifying.
Some of us start early and don’t realize it until much later.
We where the little children that dug up worms and gathered flowers and collected nice rocks and that read to many books and didn’t belive a single word we read in the Bible (This last thing is a personal statement and experience). And then with sixteen, eighteen, twenty, twenty-five we rediscover magic as a part of our lives.
Some of us don’t start untill we think that it is already to late to start with something new.
We have been doing the same practice for over a decade and it never felt quite right. We have a start-stop relationship with magic. We think it might just not be for us at all.
But now we want to start again from the very beginning and do it right this time.
Maybe you recognize yourself in those statements? Or meybe not.
Whether the above stated fits you down to the blood or not at all. A fact is that you want to be a witch.
You want to practice magic. You want to walk the croocked path. You want it with all your soul. Right?
When you are at this point of knowing that you want to be a witch but not knowing how to be a witch then the internet is your best friend and your worst enemy.
Everyone has their own opinion, their own instructions, their own rules. And none of them feel entirely right.
Don’t curse, curse all you like. Use crystals, use wands, use this, use that. Have an altar, have a garden, have a cat/toad/bird.
But few people ever tell you to start with what you have. To do what feels right for you. To use what is at hand.
Ask yourself: what do I have?
Can I practice openly?
Do I want an altar?
Do I care about any gods? Do I want to worship any gods?
Do I want to use … in my craft?
Is this really what I want to work with or who I want to work with?
Do I really believe this/that will work?
Ask yourself these questions and more! Question everything. Only use in your craft what feels right to you.
Write it down in your diary, your book of shadows, your grimoire, your whatever. Just write it down.
Write: This is awesome! I love it! It works so well for me! I’ll incorporate it into my craft from now on! Have to learn more! Research! Research! Research!
Or: That was terrible! Never again! Not my thing! Oh hell to the no! Nope! Nope! Nope!
Experiment. Fail. Try something else.
Be ready for the failure. Not everything is going to work for you. It doesn’t matter if it works for every other person on the planet, if it doesn’t work for you it doesn’t work for you.
Not everything is going to be available to you either.
You shouldn’t try to force your way into something that’s not meant to be for you. That doesn’t mean you have to be dense about it tho.
Knowledge is attainable. Talent or The Right to something is not.
(Be respectful please. Some aspects of a closed practice or religion should not be used unless you are a part of it)
Also be ready for the Argument™.
Some people will tell you that everything you do is wrong and that the only way to do it right is to do it their way or not at all.
This can be discouraging especially if you are just starting out.
Always remember that people that say things like that aren’t relevant or important.
They don’t want to help you, they just want to be right about something for once in their life.
The point of this post is to tell you that you don’t need a garden full of herbs if you can’t have one. That you don’t need a wand if you can’t make one. That you don’t need 30 different herbs or crystals if you can’t afford them. And that a pot will do just as good a job as any cauldron ever will.

My pointers for new witches as an overview
Work with what you have
Do what feels right
Use what feels right
Follow your own path
Be ready for failure
Be ready for the Argument ™
It’s never Your craft vs. Someone elses craft
Follow your star, or don’t
Your craft, your choice!
Now go out there and be a witch.

I’ve heard from quite a few of you that you don’t know what to put in your grimoire, or that you were having a hard time filling it! Here is a jumble of Lapis Cat’s tips & ideas for your grimoire!
Getting started can be hard, for a lot of reasons! I think it took me so incredibly long to do mine because i was so nervous about messing it up.
Different ways to keep your grimoire
- Spiral notebooks
- Composition books
- Binders
- Flash drive/SD card
- In google drive, notes on your phone/computer, online
- I’ve seen a $5 hardback sketchbook from michaels used
I will add, Don’t go off and buy a $65 grimoire that is beautiful for your first one, unless you really just must. You will have many grimoires after this one, and they will get more organized and beautiful as you establish your style over time.
Once you’ve selected your personal book, Its time to gather information to put in it! This is the part i’m often asked about. Nothing is mandatory in a grimoire, and you should add only information that is important to you. The one thing i will suggest you add is a blessing as one of your first pages. I’ve posted a book of shadows blessing in the past <3 Everything listed under this are just ideas for things you can add in!

My Ko-Fi
rain water. rain water can be used in place of any water, for any intention. rainfall is both destructive and restorative, depending on where and how it falls. leave or hold a container outside during a rain.
storm water. storm water can be used in work dealing with power. it is strength. rain is only a shower, until it builds into a storm. this can be used for either defense or offense. leave a container outside during a storm.
hail water. hail water can be used in work dealing with direct damage. hail is water that has been treated too coldly, it lashes out. this can be used for bringing damage or harm. collect hail stones, allow them to melt.
snow water. snow water can be used in work dealing with rebirth. snow is a fresh slate, it covers what is beneath, it smothers the old. it washes away, leaving room for a new beginning. collect clean snow, allow it to melt.
salt water. salt water can be used in work dealing with cleansing, and protection. salt water is security. it is the planet’s well. it is the ever-present resource, and it is a force to be reckoned. collect rain water, add sea-salt.
moon water. moon water can be used in work dealing with passive energies. collect rain water, allow to bask in moonlight.
sun water. sun water can be used in work dealing with active energies. collect rain water, allow to bask in sunlight.
application to the craft: water is a common and important supply in the craft. in spell jars and bottles, in cleansing and charging, in offerings, in altars, in kitchen and bath magick, scrying and divination, the list goes on. water in itself a highly spiritual entity, but using water from a source compatible with your intentions can only serve to intensify its effect. i’ve written before about using the environment to aid your craft, this is an extension of that. just as any material we use, water comes from somewhere. how it came into the world is innately linked to its energy.
did it pour down onto the ground, flooding away soil, stones, and bits of earth?
did it peacefully bask in the presence of moonshine and stardust?
you could collect during a moon phase that compliments your intentions for even an even greater effect.
note: when cleansing/charging items, be sure to research the item beforehand- many things can be damaged by sunlight, water, and salt.
✨DISCLAIMER - cursing and dark magic is always a controversial topic. If you do not like to practise or read about such things then feel free to ignore this post altogether HOWEVER - I ask that whatever your personal opinion on the matter, you respect the right of each individual to ply their craft according to their OWN morals and not yours ✨
✨This Spell Jar has a threefold purpose - to Bind, to Banish and, if triggered, to Curse✨The spell is designed to lay a powerful compulsion on the target, making them wary and fearful of approaching you✨If they attempt to do so regardless, the Curse will activate and rebound their ill intentions back onto them, sowing bitterness and misfortune through their life✨
THIS IS NOT A HEX, IT IS A CURSE - such spells are designed to be permenant and difficult to break - think very carefully about laying curses on others and decide if the wrongs they have done you truly warrant such a response from you
Although this is a curse, it is generally intended to give those who have been abused and feel afraid or vulnerable an means of defending themselves and exacting a level of justice against their abusers
A small glass jar with a cork
A taglock (hair, blood, name on paper, object belonging to the target etc)
Rock salt
Chilli
Lemon juice
Onion
Garlic
Black ink
Pen
A red candle
Black cord/yarn
Any crystals or equipment you require to ward and protect yourself (VERY important)
✨Cleanse my work area and create a circular shield to protect yourself and your home whilst you work (you may choose to ward yourself)
✨To bolster an energetic shield, mark out a physical circle using yarn (black for protection and banishment) and seal it with a crystal if you have one (you may also choose to use protective sigils for an additional boost)
✨Light the red candle and wrote the name of the abuser on a small slip of paper, wrapping it around a small object of theirs to create your taglock (ignore this if you are using a different kind of taglock - just the name on the paper will work if you have none of their possessions)
✨Fill the jar in this order, focusing on your intention
Rock salt - for protection
Garlic - for banishment
Chilli - for banishment and suffering
Onion - for banishment and sorrow
✨Coat the taglock in wax from the red candle and add it to the jar - mix it all by shaking the jar
✨ Add the lemon juice (for bitterness and suffering) and a drop of the black ink (to bring darkness to their life) and mix again
✨Cork the jar and seal it with the red wax, then bind it with the black cord and seal with more wax
✨It is up to you what you now do with the jar -hide it, bury it or throw it away - but it is advisable to make sure it won’t be found or broken as this could have unexpected and likely unpleasant results✨
✨Once you have completed your jar it is ESSENTIAL that you cleanse both yourself and your space to remove the residue left by powerful dark magic✨ Use sage, remove or sigils and cleanse your energy, but it is advisable to perform a more thorough and powerful cleansing than you might for a gentler and more positive spell✨

It’s okay to not “dress like a witch”, you are a witch, so you are dressed like one!
Sometimes spells don’t work, don’t get flustered, try again!
Not everybody in the community is nice and welcoming, hold your ground.
Find what path suits YOU, not your peers.
Witchcraft is customisable to fit YOUR needs.
Cursing is NOT a bad thing!
Respect closed cultures always.
You don’t have to be religious.
Witchcraft and Wicca are NOT synonymous! Witchcraft is a secular practice, Wicca is a religion completely unrelated.
Remember to ground and cleanse every once and a while.
Thank your tools occasionally.
Witchcraft is not the solution to all of your problems.
Ingesting herbs can be dangerous at times, be careful. Especially if you take medication!
You will not be able to control people, read minds, levitate, or use telekinesis. Those are all movie magic.
Take everything with a large grain of salt.
Read as much as you can, even the “bad” (cough silver ravenwolf) books, you can learn what not to do that way.
Avoid Silver Ravenwolf unless just reading for the meme.
You don’t have to keep up an edgy “witch” aesthetic, just be you!
There tends to be a lot of drama surrounding the witch community in particular, stay out of it.
STAY AWAY FROM PAGANSUNCENSORED.
You don’t have to do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.
Covens are NOT mandatory.
There is no special ‘initiation’ to become a witch, you want to identify as a witch? You’re a witch! Just like magic.
Be careful of who you trust, just like any other community there are bad eggs who will try to hurt you.
You don’t have to use divination to be a witch!
You don’t have to tell people you practice until you feel safe doing so, don’t feel rushed.
RESEARCH, CROSS CHECK, THEN CHECK AGAIN! Never believe one source.
Shielding and protection are important.
Casting a circle is not necessary, it is a preference.
People who have been practicing for longer than you will sometimes try to belittle you, do not believe them. You are just as much a witch as someone who has been practicing 20+ years, you’re just newer.
DON’T LICK UNKNOWN ROCKS. Seriously, you could die.
Using a ouija board is not going to summon a demon, but take the same precautions you would with any spirit work.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help, or ask someone to teach you something.
Remember that you don’t have to be ONE type of witch, you can practice forty different types of witchcraft at one time if you want!
Charging your crystals gives them an extra boost and aids in magic.
If you don’t want to use the title “witch”, you don’t have to. There are many, MANY other ways to say you like a little magic in your cereal.
There are many ways to practice in secret, but make sure you’re safe in doing so.
Burying jars is awful for the environment. Find biodegradable things to use instead!
Be careful if collecting graveyard dirt (or anything from a graveyard) - you can get into some pretty extensive trouble.
Be cautious about using rusty nails. Always wear gloves.
Basic fire safety goes a LONG way.
Your own intuition is one of your biggest tools, learn to use it well.
Learn at your own speed!
Don’t use witchcraft in place of medical/psychiatric professional assistance.
Working with Fae can be dangerous, make sure you know what you’re doing.
Research before doing something, common sense right?
Familiars will not always be your pets, unfortunately.
Working with spirits can be dangerous, take necessary precautions.
Lemon water is probably the easiest way to cleanse, just be careful around crystals.
You are valid as a witch, no matter if you’ve been practicing 20 minutes or 20+ years. You are awesome.
Does that person really have ~bad vibes~ or are they neurodivergent and you haven't taken the time to deconstruct what society has told you is acceptable behavior based solely on neurotypicality?
hey don't cry. 7,401 species of frog in the world, ok?
This charm is used to relieve stress and anxiety and make you feel at ease, it’s an easy spell and it’s great for baby witches to even the most experienced ones You will need: * Salt * Water (purified if possible) * White or light blue cloth ( whatever size you want depending on how big you want your charm) * White or light blue candle * String or ribbon in your favourite colour * A strand of you own hair Method: * meditate and imagine all your stress and anxiety covering your skin and body like dark, black, oily sludge. * Dip your thumb into the water and place on your forehead, throat, underneath lung, navel and groin area and as you are doing this imagine the sludge disappearing * Then meditate at your candle and image a ball of white mist then imagine the mist moving into your bowl of salt and covering the salt until it is pure and calming * Then tip salt onto the cloth or fabric and place a strand of your hair in there, then tie it up with your string or ribbon. * And you are done! Cuddle, caress, stroke, hold to your heart this magickal bag whenever you are feeling stressed and it will calm you instantly! Thanks, happy enchanting 🌙✨
