MASTERLIST | TAGLIST
kuroo was certain he would never find love as he grew up surrounded by heartbreak, by venomous words and arguments that shake a house down to its core, by resentment and regret instilled in bitter performative kisses and wedding bands for props. yet you found him.
most days he wondered what kind of hero or saint he must have been in the past life to be loved by you–unconditionally and selflessly.
other days, he's plagued by his past and the recurring nightmare that the home your hearts settled in would be torn down by the same two pairs of hands that built it.
kuroo has been distant lately. you first played it off as being busy at work or being tired, but a feeling in your chest whispered that the longer you allowed it the worse it would get. besides he had a tendency to keep to himself until he no longer could and you hated how he felt the need to carry his burdens by himself.
you squeezed his tensed shoulders, peering at his paperwork sprawled all over his desk. "you should take a break, love," you whispered, nuzzling your face into the crook of his neck.
you winced at the way he subtly dodged your affection. "i know i'll be done in a sec," he mumbled dismissively, shuffling his documents.
"i kind of feel like you've been avoiding me lately. is there a problem?"
a beat of silence. "i'm not, just busy," he curtly replied.
"are you sure? you know you could talk to me if there's something bothering you." he only nodded in response to which you rest your case–something was definitely bothering him. "i can't help you if you don't tell me what's wrong, tetsu," you whispered, reaching to touch his shoulder again.
you audibly gasped as he quickly pushed your hand away. "i know, i get it. i just need to finish this like i said. you're not being of any help if you keep nagging me like this."
frowning, you crossed your arms over your chest. your patience was quickly wearing thin. "well i'm sorry for nagging you. i was just worried about you."
"oh i'm sorry! i'm the one constantly swamped with work but i have to worry about you worrying about me," he sarcastically remarked, rolling his eyes. the dim lights in his office traced his clearly annoyed features.
"what's that supposed to mean?" you raised an eyebrow at him.
he studied your expression for a moment before dismissing you once more. "nothing, forget it."
"no, can you stop brushing me off wh-"
"god," he dragged the word out in utter frustration, running a hand through his face. "can you not take a hint? i wanna be left alone!"
"how do you expect me to ignore this when there's clearly a problem and you're not telling me!" you argued, voice unintentionally raising out of frustration. it sort of felt like he wasn't hearing you, maybe getting the words out louder would help. but in truth, he just didn't want to listen.
in a swift, somewhat aggressive motion, he pushed his chair back and stood to face you. you stumbled back, merely startled by the sudden movements. you weren't afraid he was going to hit you, but the next words that came out of his mouth felt like he just did.
"has it ever occurred to you that maybe i don't want anything to do with you or your pointless worrying, that's why i never talk about the things that bother me!?" you blinked back ay him, trying to process his words. "probably not because all you ever care about is yourself anyway," he huffed, turning away from you.
"you're right, i haven't thought about it like that," you calmly mumbled, a stark contrast to him and your own from 30 seconds ago.
you meant it. though his words stung and there were about a hundred different ways he could have phrased it differently, you understood his point. kuroo was naturally closed off, hiding his vulnerability under a mask of sheer charm and confidence. you felt wrong for prying when he clearly wasn't ready to talk things through. it was for the sake of your relationship, you reasoned, but you didn't think about his own sake enough. he must have had a reason for hiding his troubles but it doesn't justify the way he acted.
you exhaled, breaking the silence. you dismissed your thoughts in favor of giving yourselves some time and maybe talk things through the following morning–properly and civilly like adults.
"i'm sorry for stressing you out. finish up soon so you could get some rest."
you closed the door behind you as you left his office and made your way into the bedroom where you got ready for bed–in silence, alone with your thoughts, replaying his words over and over.
you tossed and turned but sleep wasn't coming to you any time soon so it seemed. you quickly slipped on a hoodie, grabbed your wallet and keys and left for a bit of fresh air.
meanwhile, kuroo in his office had a lot of time to think. in the silence, all he heard was his own words to you echoing repeatedly. the more he dwelled on it the more he hated himself for the way he treated you. when he heard the door in the next room open and close he was half expecting you to enter his office, pry him off his work and get him to bed. instead, he heard the front door open and click close. he panicked.
he zoomed out his office to check the bedroom after a moment of being paralyzed with fear. he prayed that you never left at all and it was all in his head. you weren't there. he frantically searched for his keys. dammit, why were they missing now of all times. you were always the one who knew where he last left them. he debated whether he would try to find you, run around the city like a lost puppy. he figured that might not be the best option, what if you went home as he was still out looking for you? he tried calling you, flooding you with messages as he paced around the barren apartment. no answer, not even read receipts. as he paced back and forth, he heard a faint tune from the bedroom. did you honestly leave your phone as you ran off in the middle of the night?
come to think of it... this scene looked all too familiar to him.
you creeped back into the apartment as quietly as you can, not wanting to wake kuroo if he was already asleep. as you neared your bedroom, sobs and sniffles became louder.
"tetsu?" you gently called out from the door way. he hadn't even noticed you until then. he whipped his head up, red puffy eyes peered at you with both surprise and relief. he came running to tackle you in an embrace.
"oh thank god you didn't leave me. i'm sorry, i'm so sorry. i didn't mean any of it i was being a jerk. please don't go," he cried into your shoulder, holding you as if you would float away if he let go in the slightest.
hesitantly, you wrapped your arms around him, rubbing his back soothingly. "what's wrong? i'm not going to leave you, silly. i just went out for some air."
although you wanted him to at least be sorry for what he said, it pained you to see him like this.
"i was wrong. i treated you so badly back there. i was just scared. and i know it doesn't make sense but i was afraid because of how much i love you, how i can't imagine my life without you. and i remembered my mom, my parents. i was scared! i thought- i thought i was going to ruin it somehow. and i just did. you were gone and i just- i thought of the worst-"
you gently hushed his rambling, cradling his wet cheeks into the palms of your hands, looking him in the eyes to anchor him down.
"i'm not leaving, darling. calm down okay?"
he hesitated for a but but nodded intently nonetheless, wrapping you in a tight hug again. you stroked his hair while gently swaying your bodies side to side to hush his cries and the hammering in his chest you felt against yours. "i don't appreciate the way you talked to me, but i understood your point. this was exactly what i didn't want happening if you kept bottling your emotions up."
"i'll try to communicate better i promise. i'll make it up to you. i'm sorry and i love you so much."
you pulled away and wiped his tears gently. "let's get ready for bed, we'll talk in the morning hm?"
his lips pursed to an adorable pout he probably didn't know was showing. a beat of silence later, as he turned to the bath you whispered, "i love you, idiot."
You’ve had a difficult day, and were crying in the bathroom. You washed your face and put on a smile on your face, because you didn’t want him to worry about you. But he knows, almost instantly.
Slightly smirking, he moves closer and closer, and playfully runs his finger down the bridge of your nose, “Your nose is always a little red after you’ve been crying…”
He smirks sadly, holding you by the waist, “Wanna talk about it, baby?”

ft. sakusa kiyoomi, tsukishima kei
you're not oblivious to the fact that kiyoomi is a very conscious person
that's one of the things you loved about him
he was hygienic and he always made sure that his health was his utmost priority
but one downside is that kiyoomi had the tendency to push people away because of his straightforwardness
you were used to it and in fact, you were one of those people he tolerated
but everyone has their bad days
and unfortunately for you, today was kiyoomi's and since you were always attached to him by the hip, he unintentionally snapped at you
what's worse is that he snapped at you the moment you confessed to him
"Omi!" you shouted happily as you entered the gymnasium, giving Komori a small wave before making your way to where Kiyoomi was sitting.
He looked at you with a frown. He wasn't wearing a mask since they were training awhile ago and only took a quick break. "Y/n, what are you doing here?"
You sat beside him making Kiyoomi grimace and slightly move away. You frowned at him, completely displeased at the action. "I just wanted to give you a visit. Plus, I have something to tell you."
You started to fiddle with your fingers nervously. You practiced your confession several times already but doing it seemed harder than you thought.
"What is it? Talk, I'm not in the right mood to socialize right now."
Out of panic, you quickly blurted out a rather loud, "I like you!" You immediately covered your mouth with your hand and stared at him wide eyed.
The other players looked at you with sympathy, knowing what's about to happen. Out of all days, you really had to confess today, when Kiyoomi was in a pissy mood after several fangirls pushed themselves against him this morning, not minding his personal space.
Kiyoomi stared at you with a serious expression before standing up. "I don't like you. Leave."
"But Omi.."
"You're irritating and you always bother me when it is clear that I don't want your company." He turned around and left you on the bench, your head casted down in humiliation.
You whispered a small sorry before running out of the gym with tears falling from your eyes.
For the next few days, you did your very best to stay away from Kiyoomi. You changed your route to school knowing that your usual route meant that you have to pass by his house. Even if you got scolded several times for being late, you did not stop.
You sat near the door so you can easily exit the room after class. You even stopped eating with Komori and Kiyoomi during breaks and lunch. Even your usual routine of visiting the gym during practices was stopped.
At first, Kiyoomi didn't mind. He knew that you'd come back in a few days just like you always did. You like him after all, right?
But when a few days turned into weeks, He started getting bothered. Why weren't you pestering him like always? Why did you stop visiting him? You said you like him, right?
It was the second week that Kiyoomi took action. He woke up extra early to wait for you infront of your house, aiming to confront you about your behavior.
When you went out, your eyes widened slightly upon seeing Kiyoomi waiting for you outside. He was wearing his face mask while staring at you intently, letting you know that he purposely waited for you.
You looked down and was about to walk pass him when you felt him tugging on your wrist. Your gaze snapped to his hand, not believing that he was indeed touching your skin.
"Sakusa?"
His eye twitched at the weirdness of you not calling him like usual. Sighing, he stepped a little closer to you, hand still holding your wrist to ensure that you won't run away from him.
"You're ignoring me," he said while eyeing you. "Why?"
You took your hand from him and furrowed your brows. "I'm just doing you a favor. I don't want to be a bother anymore. Isn't this what you wanted?"
"I-"
"It's fine, Sakusa. You don't have to force yourself to apologize just because you feel bad or obliged to."
He ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. "I'm not apologizing because I feel bad."
"Then what? You're apologizing just to make fun of me? I know I said I like you but that doesn't mean that you have the right to-"
"You don't get it!"
At this point, you were both raising your voices. Some passersby were looking at you two weirdly, some even running as to not get caught up in the fight.
"Get what, Sakusa? Why don't you tell me so I can understand?!"
"I like you!" Kiyoomi exclaimed. "I... Fuck. I like you, okay? I wasn't in the mood when you confessed and I rejected you without thinking. I messed up. The moment I saw you walk out, I knew I fucked up real bad and I-"
"Om-"
"And I thought that you'd come back the next day to bother me again like usual. I wanted to apologize but my pride-"
You sighed as he continued to ramble. With fast movements, you stood on your tiptoes and encircled your arms around his neck to pull him down to you, kissing him over his mask.
When you let go, Kiyoomi was silent. His eyes were wide and you thought that you went over board. Panic made its way to your face as you try to find the words to explain.
"Sorry, I didn't me-"
This time, he was the one to cut you off. Kiyoomi took off his mask and bent down to kiss you on your lips. One of his arms snaked around your waist to support you while the other settled on your nape, angling you to him.
"Be my s/o."
Everyone in Karasuno knew how much you like Tsukishima
In fact, you remind him everyday
You often give him fresh strawberries from the market and even bake him strawberry cake
Sometimes, you would put little sticky notes on his belongings and write some encouraging words like "you can do it", "I believe in you" or "take it easy!"
On his birthday, you even gave him a hoodie with a dino design (which he secretly loved)
There are times that you knew Tsukishima gets irritated when you visit and even snaps at you but you didn't mind. You liked him and a small snap will not discourage you
But what you didn't know was that it would only take one conversation to completely shatter your heart
"-And they're back," Sugawara said as he saw you enter the gym, a bubbly smile present on your face as usual.
"Kei!" You skipped your way towards Tsukishima and handed him his water bottle which you voluntarily refilled with hot water.
He only gave you a 'tsk' and took the water bottle. Adjusting his glasses, he stared at you from head to toe as if analyzing you, a small blush appearing on his cheeks.
"What are you looking at? Have you finally come to realize that you like me back?" you cheekily asked, poking his bicep.
"No. I was just wondering how someone could look so ugly."
Despite what he said, you forced yourself to giggle, covering your upset feeling with an eye roll. "Oh shut up, Kei. You don't have to hide it, you know? Don't worry, I'm not going to reject you."
You winked at him causing Tsukishima to blush even more.
The rest of the boys snickered and laughed at his reaction which made Tsukishima more embarrassed than he already is.
"Just confess to the girl already, Tsukishima. Can't you see she's trying hard to win you?" Daichi said with a small chuckle while patting Tsukishima's back.
Tsukishima just huffed and pushed his glasses up. "What's there to like? They're nothing but an eyesore anyway."
"What?" you asked in disbelief.
Having a playful banter with Tsukishima was normal in your routine but this was the first time he called you such an offensive term. Does he really think of you that way?
"Oh come on, stop acting dumb. I don't even get why there are guys running after you. I mean, there's really nothing much to look at, right?"
Everyone grew quiet at what he said, clearly not expecting Tsukishima to be at such level of rudeness.
You swallowed the lump forming in your throat as your insecurity skyrocketed. "I try hard every single day to look presentable to you. I-"
You paused for a moment to laugh pathetically at yourself. "I exert a lot of effort to make you notice me. I cook for you, I give you gifts. Heck, I even stay after class to help clean the gym so that the task would be easier for you and I'm not even asking for anything in return."
Tsukishima glared at you sharply that you immediately felt extremely smaller than him. "I never asked you to do those things for me."
"Can't you at least show me that you care?" You wiped your tears with the back of your hand. "Because I'm slowly getting tired of this push and pull game."
"Don't you get it? I don't like you. Why don't you stop pushing yourself to me and start getting a life, hm?"
"Tsukishima, that's enough!" you heard Daichi yell at him.
"Y/n?" Sugawara was immediately beside you, his hand rubbing circles on your back in attempt to calm you down.
"No-" You lifted your face up to meet Tsukishima's eyes. "I think he's right. I should stop being a nuisance and focus on myself."
"I'll leave you alone. I'm sorry," you said before giving Tsukishima a bow and leaving the gym with everyone's eyes following your figure until the door shut.
Everyone could only look at Tsukishima as he cursed under his breath.
"Shit."
The moment you left the gym, you headed straight to the comfort room to let your tears out. You stared at yourself on the mirror as tears cascaded down your cheeks.
"You're beautiful," you reassured yourself while pointing at your own reflection. "What he said doesn't make you any less. Know your worth."
You wiped your tears and splashed your face with cold water before getting out and heading to class without sparing Tsukishima any glance.
You ignored Tsukishima, stopped visiting the gym and focused on yourself. You even made made friends with some of your classmates that you didn't bother getting associated with last time because you were too focused on capturing the attention of Tsukishima.
Unbeknownst to you, a certain male was eyeing you as you interact with other people. He blamed himself for pushing you away. He didn't talk to you, thinking that you only wanted space for a couple days before bothering him again.
He knew that what he said was out of line and he regret everything he did. He even asked Yamaguchi and the rest of the team for advice but all of them responded with the same answer - apologize and tell you how he feels.
Tsukishima gripped the pen tightly as he watched you laughing at something your classmate said. The said classmate was too close to you and it was obvious that he was trying to flirt with you.
"Tsukki?" Yamaguchi called out. He followed Tsukishima's gaze and sighed. "Why don't you go and talk to them?"
"Tsk. Why would I do that? Can't you see they're enjoying his company?" Tsukishima bitterly said.
"You'll end up losing them if you don't do something about it now. Who knows, they might already be lo-" Yamaguchi stopped as Tsukishima instantly stood up and made his way to where you are.
Taking your wrist, he pulled you towards him, heading out of the classroom.
"Tsukishima, what the hell?!" You tried to resist but his grip on your wrist only tightened.
You gasped as he suddenly stopped, trapping you against a wall with his arms beside your head.
"I'm sorry." Tsukishima closed his eyes, balling his fist as he bowed his head. "I said hurtful words to you and no amount of apology will take those away but I want you to know that I regret every single one of it."
You bit your lower lip as you felt yourself tearing up once again. "Do you really think that I'm ugly? I was hurt, Kei. It's just.."
"I'm sorry." His hand made its way to your cheek, cupping your face while he wiped your tears with his thumb. "You're not ugly."
You shook your head and averted your gaze from him, a sob escaping your lips as you felt yourself falling for him deeper. "Don't. Just stop. I'll accept your apology but please just leave me be. I won't be able to stop my feelings for you if you keep leading me on."
"But I don't want you to stop."
"What?"
"I've fallen for you." He tipped your chin up with his hand making you look at him and you were surprised to see the vulnerability in his features. "Please look at me again, y/n. Keep loving me because I swear that I'll do things different this time. Give me a chance."
You can't help but encircle your arms around him, burrying your face on the side of his neck as you nodded repeatedly. "One chance, Kei."
Tsukishima hugged you tightly, lips pressing on the side of your head. "One chance." He leaned away from you and held your face with his hand, eyes boring to yours admiringly.
"You're beautiful."

Life couldn’t be better. Honestly! You have everything and then some more that fills your every moment with happiness - you have an amazing husband, who is your lover, your support, your dear friend and the person who looks at you like you hold the whole universe in your hands (and you do, whenever you cradle Diluc’s face in your palms). You have two amazing sons - four-year-old twins, sweet and active, polite and respectful, happy and playful, though sometimes borderline mischievous - but they are kids! That is to be expected. You found home in the manor of the winery, where every single member of staff came to love you dearly, always smiling and sounding fondly whenever ‘My Lady’ or ‘Madame’ leaves their lips both in your presence and absence. You have great friends - your close circle of old ones and the ones you befriended after stepping into your now-husband’s circle, the best possible addition being his brother’s family. His wife and daughter adore you and the feeling is wholeheartedly mutual. People of Mondstadt always loved you, but now they love you even more and are always excited to see the whole Ragnvindr family of four members in the city.
Sadly, not all people.
Sure, there is nothing wrong in someone not liking you and not approaching you as a couple of others would. After all, it’s impossible to be loved by everyone, there is no such person in the whole Teyvat. It’s a completely different thing when someone openly despises you.

prince!oikawa tōru x princess!reader word count: 0.4k warnings: none a/n: special thanks to @ryesei for instigating royal au brain rot n proofreading <3
it’s been years since your allied kingdoms have met, and the last time you saw the crown prince oikawa, he was a little snotty nosed brat who liked to swipe sweet delights from under the baker’s nose, and have a tantrum whenever he lost a game of dice to you. the fond memories brought a small smile to your painted lips, but for some odd reason your heart was still racing at the thought of seeing him again after so long. you're mind wandered back to a couple days prior, when your ladies in waiting gossiped about his notable beauty, and how he’s one of the most sought after bachelors in his kingdom. even further in fact, some have whispered.
suddenly trumpets rang through the throne room, shaking you of your thoughts, and instinctively you raised your chin and straightened your back. no matter how impressive he may be, you are still the crown princess of your kingdom, and you weren’t going to let a man play with your nerves and make your knees buckle. you’ve dealt with much too much to let that happen.
the enormous doors embellished with swirls of gold, and carvings of mythical animals pushed open, revealing an entourage of various knights in gleaming silver armour, and footmen dressed smartly with splashes of the familiar pale teal colour adorning their chests. the fanfare of trumpets rippled through the magnificent room and reverberated off the soaring ceilings. you forgot how grand their entrances always were; the oikawa family really did love to have a splendid show.
the golden trumpets finished their welcome, and the noble people of the royal court took their cue to stand up in respect of the royalty about to appear. the mass of silver and teal parted and the beloved crown prince oikawa tōru finally emerged in all his glory.
the whispers were right. and you hated it with a growing passion in each of his assured steps. you hated the gentle tousle of his caramel hair, and how it shined under the golden sunlight. you hated the way he commanded the room with a cool poise, and cunning smirk. you hated how fitted and flattering his royal clothing looked on him, the ivory white and the accents of pale teal complimenting his fair skin so perfectly. you hated how as he strode to greet your parents, his clear brown eyes glanced over at you, and your heart seemed to stop for a moment. you hate how as he came to greet you and took your gloved hand with his own, looking up at you through his lashes as he gently brushed his lips against your knuckle with a knowing smile, you forget how to breath.
“it’s been a while, my lady.”

genre: fluff , mutual pining
a/n: this is kinda messy lol whoops. i just poured my thoughts into this :') anyway mutual pining stans make some noise. very cheesy and cliche and u know what it's okay. sometimes we all need a little cliche romance
oikawa knew he was in love with you.
he knew it since the first day he saw you, and it hit him like a truck. he knew the second your eyes shined back at him, and it was as if he could hear windchimes all around him. that day that he had run into you in an empty, eerily quiet hallway at the school after his practice, he vowed to himself that he would be with you one day.
he realized it again a couple weeks later, when it was halloween and he had finally convinced you to walk home with him for the first time. you barely spoke, your eyes a little more clouded this time, your mind was definitely running at a million miles an hour. but he watched as two little kids ran down the street beside you, already in costumes, before one slipped and fell. oikawa's palms turned sweaty as he watched you selflessly help the clumsier of the two get herself together and pick up all the candy she dropped. he wasn't oblivious to the way that you forced a smile to make yourself more approachable to the little girl.
two months later, he knew he was absolutely smitten the day that he held you while you cried, and the only thought that crossed his mind was to protect you. the rest of the world didn't matter, the fact that he was late to his practice didn't matter. all he knew was he wanted to be your rock and hold you and make sure you never felt alone again. (he was sure he would have to pick a fight with your teachers for stressing you out so much over midterms—luckily iwaizumi stopped him before his thoughts became reality.)
christmas finally rolled around. oikawa decided to do something about his emotions that were practically ready to burst. but he couldn't. he abandoned the roses he bought for you, and they shriveled on his nightstand. he didn't visit you in the romantic way that he planned, but came to you as a friend once again. despite the heat of your face, the shake of your hands, and the fact that he knew you got nervous around him, he still doubted your feelings. oikawa was an idiot, really, and he was self aware at this point.
school resumed, the sakura trees bloomed again, and your relationship remained dormant. you both weaved your way around each other, close friends yet also complete strangers. it was almost painful, the way neither of you could admit to your feelings. oikawa's fans became less overwhelming, a vast majority backing off as they realized his heart was occupied. he still choked up every time he laid his eyes on you, completely infatuated in every way. he wasn't blind to the way your breath stuttered whenever he tapped your shoulder or flashed a grin in your direction, either. in fact, your cute reactions kept him going.
at this point, oikawa was sure he was leading you on. he didn't mean to, but he wasn't sure if he could even be in a relationship with someone as beautiful as you. oikawa was insecure, much less confident and much more shy than he chose to admit. he was so afraid of failing you as a boyfriend, but he knew his insistent flirting without any obvious goal was probably hurting you even worse.
oikawa's heart ached. he could no longer handle looking at you without calling you his. every night without you in his arms became increasingly longer, he twisted and turned and ruined his meticulously made bed as you plagued his thoughts. he was sure you felt the same, and that's what hurt him the most. he wasn't able to act on his feelings. that night, he dreamt of holding you once again.
on the last day of school, you both strolled home together once again. today was the same as every other day. leave the school, take a left, walk two blocks to arrive at your house first, but the tension around you both held a different story. you chatted the same, no awkwardness laced into your conversations, but the atmosphere was new.
his eyes softened as you leaned down to pet a cat again. it had become part of your routine, but today you turned around and looked at him as you lifted the small animal. "look how cute he is," you cooed. oikawa really did not care about the cat, though. his body moved without receiving any signals from his brain, hand finding its way to your cheek.
the cat had jumped out of your grasp, leaving the two of you in the shade of a tree as oikawa gazed at you longingly, lovingly. his thumb moved its way from your soft cheek to your bottom lip as he glanced up into your eyes, silently asking for approval. the moment you nodded, oikawa was quick to lean down and place his soft lips against yours.
he hummed as he tasted strawberry, probably from the cute package of chapsticks he gifted you for your birthday. his heart practically exploded when he felt one of your hands rest on top of his, specifically the one on your cheek. a giggle left his mouth as he pulled back before diving back in, unable to get enough of you. you could feel the love in every touch, oikawa was utterly enamored by you.
maybe oikawa didn't need to confess after all.
do you ever sabotage your own free time? like wtf is that about? i want to play this game or read or do something specific but instead i will just stare out the window or scroll mindlessly???
Someone’s knocking on the door at an obnoxiously fast pace. It rings in your ears as your eyelids crack open. You twist in your sheets to check the time on your phone.
4:03 am.
Your eyebrows knit together in annoyance as you stuff your face in a pillow, deciding to ignore the knocking.
A couple of minutes go by.
It doesn’t stop.
Sitting up in your bed, you try to rub the sleep out of your eyes as you stumble out of your sheets and shuffle towards the door.
Sleep and tiredness still lingered in thoughts as you looked into the peephole.
A sharp breath of air enters your lungs, you’re wide awake now.
A familiar ache began to return to your chest and you’re unsure if your heart’s heavy with dread or hope. You stare at the closed door in front of you, the knocking has stopped but you didn’t need to check to know that he was still there.
With shaky hands, you reach for the door handle and slowly turn it open. The harsh glow emitting from the white lights in the lobby made you wince as your vision readjusted itself.
He’s standing before you, taller, more defined and skin tanner than you remembered.
You gulp thickly, unsure of what to say or do in this situation. It’s been a little bit over a year since iwaizumi left you for California, leaving you to pick up the remnants of your broken heart, alone. You can’t exactly trace back to when his love for you began to lag behind his love for volleyball.
Nevertheless, you had supported him. Excusing missed dinner after dinner, excusing the lack of ‘i love yous’ and goodnight kisses and excusing the empty space in your bed. You had supported him until you simply couldn’t anymore. The night you had finally announced your grievances was the night he announced that he would be leaving for California and the night he walked out of your door with a tear-stained face.
One year later and here he is again, fists clenched to his sides and chest tight as if he’s holding his breath. You open your mouth to say something but he beats you to it.
“It wasn’t worth it,”
You blink and a couple of beats pass in silence so he continues as if to fill in the blanks.
“California,” he pauses, “it wasn’t worth it,”
Your eyebrows knit together as a result of multiple emotions, primarily anger and confusion.
“What?” it comes out on edge and he winces slightly.
He visibly takes in a deep breath and there’s a slight tremble in his lower lip, “California wasn’t worth leaving you,”
There’s a pause, “volleyball wasn’t worth leaving you.”
Your eyes blow wide and a lump begins to build its way up your throat. The feeling of an old wound reopening consumes you.
You want to ask why but your voice fails you.
You want to ask so many questions but your voice fails you.
Your breathing stutters, he notices as you grit your teeth. You shift your gaze from the floor to him and he visibly swallows.
The look you give him is a pained one. A mix of anger and hurt.
“Why now?” you pause, “why after all this time?”
He doesn’t answer your question though, “I never stopped loving you,”
Your heart drops to your stomach at the time wasted wallowing in heartbreak, at the time wasted sobbing in your bed and at the time wasted missing him.
You bury the face in your hands, “stop,” you whisper and it makes his heart twist horribly in his chest.
He tentatively reaches for the hands hiding your face and gently moves them away.
You let him.
His eyes are glassy when you look at him and that’s when you notice the backpack resting by his feet. He answers your question for you.
“I came here straight from the airport,” he whispers sheepishly.
You blink, “why did you come back?”
Your heartbeat accelerates as the words leave your tongue and as he responds, he looks at ease as if a weight was released off of his shoulders.
“For you,”
Your eyes begin to turn glassy as you nibble at your lower lip, a part of you wants to tell him to get out, to go back to California and spare you the heartache but the wiser part of you knows that deep down that isn’t what you want.
His eyes are soft as he looks at you. Glassy, tired but soft and there’s a familiar glint in his eye.
A glint that meant taking you to brunch and feathering you with kisses, a glint you never thought you’d see again. A glint that meant ‘i love you’.
So you decide to take a leap of faith and move a step closer and so does he.
It’s 4 am in the morning, the sun isn’t out yet and your neighbours are asleep. You have work in a couple of hours and you’re in a crinkled shirt that plops over your entire figure. You’re sure you look like a disaster, hair all over the place but iwaizumi doesn’t seem to care as you pull him in by the collar of his shirt, pressing his lips against yours.
“I never stopped loving you either.”
