Perfect!
My bad, his ego was getting too big
@vodika-vibes This is fluffily beautiful!!! Thank you for writing my request! â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ The actual inspiration was my brother back when we were teens. Used to piss my dad off that he couldnât communicate right away. Their solution was The Head Pat. đ
Hi Vodâika! I enjoy your stories so much! May I make a request? Prompt category Physical Gestures. Perky morning person (F) a little insecure. Chronically sleep-deprived clone BF canât talk to her until heâs had morning caf and some time. Compromise is a pat on the head (or similar) as he walks by to acknowledge her presence without engaging until heâs awake. Perhaps Hunter, Rex, Fox or Wolffe. Thank you for considering. đ
Summary: Fox loves his girlfriend. From the top of her head to the tips of her toes. He even loves how bright and bubbly she is first thing in the morning. Itâs not her fault he cannot function without a cup of caf first thing in the morning.
Pairing: Commander Fox x F!Reader
Word Count: 1031
Warnings: Reader is described as having long hair that "tumbles down her back" and she can wear it in a bun on the top of her head.
A/N: Hihi! You sent this in and I immediately knew what I wanted to write! But then it turned into something soft and fluffy at the end, lol. Thanks for your request~

Fox hates mornings.
In his, professional, opinion. Any time before 10 should be illegal, and he shouldnât be forced to work before noon.
Tragically, the galaxy very rarely cares about what he wants, so here he is. Awake and sort of aware at 7 am.
The bed next to him is still a little warm, but that tracks. His perfect cyare wakes up at 6:30 every morning, even on days when she doesnât have to work. Distantly, he can hear her moving around the kitchen, and soon enough the familiar scent of breakfast sausage cooking wafts into the bedroom.
Fuck, he loves her.
Groggily, he rolls off the bed, and stumbles into the fresher to shower for the day. It doesnât help wake him up, but it needs to happen, and if he doesnât do it now, it wonât get done.
One quick shower later, Fox meanders his way through the apartment he shares with his cyare and into the kitchen. There, standing at the stove with a spatula in her hand, is his cyare.Â
Her hair is pulled into a knot at the top of her head, and sheâs clad in one of his shirts and her frog covered sleep pants. Sheâs adorable. And she notices him as soon as he steps into the room.
âMorning Fox~â She chirps, âDid you sleep well?â
Fox grunts an affirmative noise and walks over to her. Normally, he would pat her head and kiss her forehead as a way to acknowledge her in the morning, but her hairstyle forbids it this morning.
So, instead, he kisses her temple and rubs his thumb down the back of her neck, before he steps around her to grab the, already prepared, cup of caf.
His poor cyare is a little insecure about her place in his life, even now, and so does everything in her power to be useful to him. This means, in this case, that she makes him breakfast every morning and preps his caf the way that he likes before he wakes up.
He, personally, thinks itâs ridiculous. Why would he want to look at another woman when he has her, after all? But sheâs allowed her insecurities. Itâs his job to make sure that they donât overwhelm her.
When they first moved in together, she took his silence in the morning as an indication that he wasnât happy with her. Though she never mentioned her thoughts to him, she just allowed the belief to work her into an anxious frenzy, until she broke down sobbing one morning asking him if he didnât love her anymore.
That had been a mess and a half to clean up and untangle.
Together, they worked out that so long as he acknowledges her in the morning, even if itâs something as simple as a touch and a kiss, it keeps her from overthinking everything.
He settles on one of the kitchen chairs, silently nursing his caf, as he watches her make breakfast for them. Sheâs humming along with the radio, and a small smile lifts his lips.Â
Her hair is a mess, sheâs not wearing any make-up. Her clothes are wrinkled and worn, or very childish in the case of her pants. She would be the first one to say that this is when she looks her worst.
Sheâs wrong.
Right here, first thing in the morning, when itâs just him and her and no one else, sheâs never more beautiful. He really is a lucky asshole.
He watches her plate breakfast, sausage, toast, fresh fruit, and some juice, then she sets a plate in front of him, before sitting in the chair next to him.Â
Thatâs about the time she realizes that heâs staring at her.
âWhat?â
Fox absently pushes his mug to the side, and reaches out for her, his hand settling on her cheek as he coaxes her closer to him so heâs able to press kisses across her face. His free hand reaches up to tug the rubber band out of her hand, allowing her long hair to fall around her shoulders and down her back.
A giggle falls from her as he pushes her hair out of her face, so he can continue kissing her, âFox! Our breakfast will get cold!â
âItâll keep,â He mumbles against her jaw, âLove you.â
One of her hands tangles in his curls, while the other curls around his bicep. âSilly man, whatâs gotten into you?â
Fox just hums and continues pressing feather-light kisses across her face, until he finally catches her lips with his own in a series of light kisses. Then he decides that sheâs not nearly close enough, and he swiftly tugs her from her chair until sheâs sitting on his lap.
Still not close enough, but itâll do for now.
A sigh falls from her, soft and love-sick, and Fox grins against her lips before pulling away and pressing his forehead against hers.Â
She has a dreamy look on her face and a goofy smile on her lips, âGoodness,â She murmurs, her fingers falling from his curls to rest against his stubble-covered cheek, âHave I just been depriving you, Fox?â
âWent all night without kissing you,â Fox replies, suddenly very, very awake, âHad to make up for lost time.â
âAh, so youâre not deprived. Youâre spoiled.â Her voice is teasing and her eyes are soft. Her fingers trail against his jaw, and she huffs out a sigh, âYou forgot to shave.â
âDidnât forget. Didnât feel like it. Too much effort.â
She shakes her head, âAfter breakfast, Iâll get the stuff and do it for you. I know how much you hate the feel of your stubble in your helmet.â
Fox feels his heart lurch in his chest. She really is perfect. And so, he pulls her into another kiss, though this time he doesnât keep it chaste. If sheâs not giggling like a schoolgirl when he finishes, then heâs not kissing her thoroughly enough.
The rest of the galaxy can take a hike. This, right now, is more important. And, just before he gets too lost in her lips, he canât help but think that, just maybe, mornings arenât that bad.

All that Echo is I love.
There is this deleted Scene from the Bad Batch arc of Clone Wars in which after Crosshair and Rex fight Anakin confronts Rex telling him that there is a possibility that Echo has been turned. To which Rex answers: "I've known Echo since Domino Squad, He is one of the bravest troopers I've ever worked with. Sure, he can test your nerves repeating every order like you are deaf, but I can tell you this: He rather die than turn against the republic." (Link)
And I wish they would have kept that.
I wish we could have gotten more of Echo's unique quirk. You know? the one that gave him his name: His tendency to repeat everything and make sure everyone is aware of what has to be done.
It's such a unique, an honestly funny quirk that we didn't really got to see outside of the Domino Squad episode and I don't see it represented on the fandom often.
I wish we could have gotten more of that little quirk that made Echo Unique in the Bad Batch. I wish we could have gotten more of Echo in the bad batch in general.
The next arc of Docâs Misadventures! @staycalmandhugaclone continues this masterpiece. Poor Doc, trying to do the right thing in an environment that wonât support it. And being reintroduced to âJester,â that was so fun! As always, waiting excitedly for more!

Did the first series of cuts to my taglist - you don't reblog or comment, I don't tag - that's how Tumblr works, my dearies.
Warnings: Emotions. That's a warning in itself. Dread, arguing, guilt, regret, feeling overwhelmed. Also a touch of profanity. Also racism style prejudice. Oh, and some Hunter thirst.

oriâbuyce, kihâkovid â all helmet, no head: someone with and overdeveloped sense of authority
Kamino was, at its core, a failed science experiment; what few inhabitants still clinging to life above tumultuous, unforgiving waves doing so purely from a futile denial of the impending ruination already evident in the violence of the oceans that overtook nearly the entirety of the planetâs stormy surface eons prior. That destruction was predestined; a simple consequence of climate, but what befell those inhabitants in the centuries that followed could be blamed on no one but themselves; driven to the edge of extinction not from natural catastrophe but from some ill-conceived need to eliminate traits arbitrarily deemed undesirable, altering the very code of their existence first through selective breeding, and then through artificial splicing until natural reproduction was not only deemed obsolete in their strive toward perfection, but became biologically impossible.
Perfection is the great myth of social naivety, offering aspirations veiled beneath the façade of a motivation that, in truth, results only in the inevitable collapse of will as goals prove eternally beyond reach. This toxic mentality, however, persists far longer than the spark of brilliance crushed beneath its unreachable expectations, but that illusion of perfection is infectious, destined to poison any subjected to its ideals not only with feelings of crippling inadequacy but also in granting false justification for prejudice against those labeled lesser through simple consequence of genetic expression.
I hated how that mentality had seeped into not only so many of the clones theyâd created, but into myself as well, tainted by those beliefs not through direct correlation, but from a nearly equally unjust bias toward the clones themselves. Had I never met Hunter and his brothers, Iâm not sure I would ever have truly noticed, but, after living with them and witnessing firsthand the cruelty their squad was subjected to because of it, each reg I saw instantly filled me with a distrust that brought with it a bang of guilt. It wasnât every reg. I knew that. But it was enough to leave me torn between that guilt and the nagging reminder of just how damaging granting them the benefit of the doubt could be.
It was because of that bias that I refused to leave the medbay of the Vigilance for even a moment; not while Hunter was still bedbound and Crosshair needed to make frequent visits to continue monitoring the progress of his eyes. Admittedly, the term âbedboundâ was rather fiercely contested⌠particularly by Hunter, himself.
âNo! Youâre on med-leave for at least another week!â I was shouting again. âI donât care if those orders came from the damn Grand Chancellor, himself!â Iâd been doing that a lot lately, whether in response to Hunterâs increasingly frustrated demands to be released or toward the shipâs staff insisting that I let them relieve me for a while. âItâs barely been four kriffing days since you were in hemorrhagic cardiac arrest!â It wasnât healthy. âYouâve barely even started physical therapy!â I knew it wasnât healthy.
âBecause you wonât let me out of this kriffing bed!â He snarled back.
âTwo weeks is the minimum recovery time for an injury like-â
âFor a nat-born! Not a clone!â He interrupted. I still couldnât look at him without seeing how pale his skin had been when Iâd found him.
âYou died!â The emptiness in those captivating eyes. âI barely managed to bring you back! Any other medic would have given up long before I did!â The terror I felt any time he was out of my sight, that fear that I might miss something critical; I knew it wasn't healthy⌠but I couldnât risk seeing him like that againâŚ
âThen get your head out of your shebs before we get do get stuck with some âother medicâ!â He snapped, and my entire body froze with a sudden chill, muscles locked as the air stilled in my lungs. âYou give them reason to think you canât be objective with us, then there wonât be a damn thing I can say to keep some oriâbuyce, kihâkovid from pulling you.â It wasnât a threat. Despite how his voice dropped into that frightful growl, I knew it wasnât a threat. He was begging me.
My teeth ground together, nostrils flared with barely controlled, shallow breaths. I said nothing as I turned and left. No words would come to me, nor did I have any confidence in my ability to force them past taut lips even if they did. I told myself it was rage that left my ears ringing, that sent a nauseating tingle dancing beneath my skin and prickling my fingertips, but I knew it was nothing so kind as that, nor so simple.
I thought of that night hidden away with Tech in the cockpit, how heâd teased me for admitting that I had nothing beyond him and his brothers; what that would leave me with if I was ripped away from them. Sick⌠Maker, I was going to be sickâŚ
Clones did heal faster than nat-borns⌠but something about forcing them back into a war zone after so little time to recover⌠It wasn't fair⌠In so many aspects of life, clones were treated and viewed as lesser; granted fewer rights, spared little consideration for basic needs or comforts, awarded no thought toward self-autonomy⌠Forcing myself to adhere to those unjust standards ground against the very core of my being⌠but Hunter was right⌠If I pushed too far, if I was called out and removed, they'd be subjected to those same rules with far less compassion.
Despite the size of the Star Destroyer, it seemed impossible to find a breath of solitude, constantly dodging patrols or maintenance crew or janitorial workers; so, I walked. Iâd barely glanced at the mission brief before lashing out, balking at the departure date looming in a mere three days, but it seemed a shockingly straightforward reconnaissance objective: confirm the presence of a droid factory that had supposedly just begun construction, and, if the reports were correct, plant enough explosives to level it before the thing could become a threat. SimpleâŚ
It wasnât hunger that drew me toward the mess hall. I knew theyâd be there, most of them, at least, and, though I wasnât ready to actually speak with them, emotions still too raw to even feign some appearance of calm, I needed to see them. Techâs arm no longer needed the support and protection of the sling, a fact he took advantage of before Iâd properly cleared him, and heâd assured me that heâd tended both Echoâs shoulder and Wreckerâs knee while my attention was focused on Hunter and Crosshair, a kindness that only deepened my own growing sense of inadequacy even as Iâd forced myself to offer my gratitude.
In the sea of nearly identical faces, my men screamed their defiance both through stature and in the striking contrast of their darkened armor amidst the white and gold of the 212th. It was because of that contrast that I was surprised to note an additional figure beside them; beside Wrecker. He dwarfed the man, an illusion that was only further accentuate by Crosshair and Tech's towering frames seated just across from them. Still, I found myself tensing, shoulders drawing back as my teeth ground, lips just hinting at a scowl, but I froze before taking that first step toward them. Smiling⌠Wrecker was smiling.
While I couldn't see their expressions from where I stood, Crosshair had his chin nestled atop his palm, elbow lazily hiked up on the table, an air of impatience screaming from how his head hung down toward a shoulder, more resigned than annoyed, and Tech appeared to actually be just as engaged with the reg as Wrecker. That guilt returned in force. They were talking; laughing⌠and Iâd been so ready to assume the worstâŚ
I studied them for a moment longer, gaze lingering on the gleeful face of the reg as I absently noted the faint scar bisecting one of his eyebrows. This wasnât me⌠This neurotic mess, jumping to respond with violence before even granting a chance to speak⌠That man was no different than the troopers Emmy gave her life trying to help⌠His broad grin only twisted that bitter taste of shame and regret deeper into my chest, tightening some unseeable noose. It felt like something was about to snap, muscles locked so taut they threatened to shake.
Air fleeing me in a sharp huff, I turned on my heel and all but fled, boots clicking loudly against the harsh metal below in rushed strides just shy of running. Cody once warned me of how traumatic events could alter the dynamic of a group. I wondered, suddenly, why he knew that. It felt odd to think that the Kaminoans might have chosen to include such concepts in whatever glimpses of psychology they might have included in their training programs, but his words had held none of the hesitation of one speaking only through thin fragments of forced studies, the details of which had long since been forgotten. I wouldnât doubt that his General was surely well versed in such things, but the Commanderâs words held a weight far greater than what might be found through secondhand allusion. Had he seen the consequences of some similar horror? Watched the fallout helpless to stop it? What would he say to this? How might he judge the depth of my connection â my dependency â to these men? How quickly might he replace me?
I knew Hunter was right. There was a balance between what care I was allowed to give and the merciless demands of the GAR, and if I faltered too far in either direction, Iâd lose themâŚ
Hunterâs eyes snapped up as I reentered the room, body tensing where he stood just a few careful steps from his bed, and I watched that initial panic of being caught flare into a defensive glare, but I didnât allow myself to sink back into what fears had fueled my earlier outbursts rebuking his every attempt to push himself; I didnât allow myself the freedom of even acknowledging that fear, that whisper of doubt that I was still missing something; I couldnât.
âIâm ordering a stress test.â I stated before he could bark out whatever argument clearly churned behind taut lips. Instantly, that tension fled him, powerful shoulders sinking beneath a hesitation that only further emphasized how apparently unreasonable heâd believed me to be, and I had to let my gaze fall to the now empty bed beside him to keep that realization from breaking me.
âIf the scars hold and you donât start bleeding out again, Iâll clear you for duty.â I didnât look at him as I said it, and the silence that followed was anything but kind. I had to keep myself from fidgeting, jaw ground.
â⌠DocâŚâ The quiet sympathy in his voice only pulled me nearer to the edge of breaking. Wrenching a quick, deep breath into my lungs, I snatched my datapad and rapidly typed in the order before I could talk myself out of it.
âYou deserve better than thisâŚâ I barely whispered it, rage and despair twisting through the words. He called my name, and my throat seized against the ball of tears straining to escape.
âI'll get you some clothes.â I said stiffly and, before he could respond, before he could further justify the cruel reasoning behind his rushed return to the battlefield or offer some softly murmured reassurance that I couldn't risk letting myself believe, I turned away, steps once again tapping loudly on the hard floors. Three days⌠we had only three days before being forced to fight again... It was wrongâŚ
Iâd brought him a comfortable shirt along with his shorts for the stress test. He elected not to wear it. Whether that choice stemmed from a hope to flaunt how quickly his wounds were healing or something far less innocent, I wouldn't let myself think too deeply on it - straining to keep my gaze on the datapad in my hand instead than the wealth of power illustrated by his every stride.
Hunterâs hair was tied up in a messy bun rather than loosely held back by that faded bandana, revealing elegant lines of muscle sweeping from his thick neck down to broad shoulders honed to frightful perfection from years of ruthless fighting, from racing across battlefields with heavy weaponry held at the ready, from driving fist and blade alike through enemies made of flesh and metal and every combination in between. Heâd gained nearly ten kilograms in the time Iâd been with them, and that boon had only added to the lethal effigy of raw power before me; added to the very real danger he represented. That power scared me, once⌠but that was a long time ago.
âPain level? Say anything less than three and Iâll throw a damn weight vest on you.â I threatened, speaking as though I wasnât fighting to keep my gaze from following every drop of sweat as they slid down the valleys carved between abs accentuated by dark, coarse hair that narrowed in such a cruel invitation between the V is his hips before vanishing beneath the waistline of his shorts.
âThree.â I could hear his smirk, jaw tensing against the way my lips threatened to pull into a grin of my own even as I pointedly rolled my eyes at him.
âAny difficulty breathing? Stiffness or pressure or-â
âPretty sure one of those fancy scanners would have started yelling at me if my lung was collapsing again.â He drawled, turning toward me with a knowing look. Heâd been running for nearly an hour, and the man was barely winded⌠Still, I couldnât silence that fear⌠that certainty that there was somethingâŚ
âAlrightâŚâ I finally murmured, hand reluctantly reaching out to flutter over the controls. His attention didnât waver as he gradually slowed to a stop, chest swelling with barely quickened breaths. There was a sense of defeat sown deeply through that single word that forbade me from meeting his eyes for a long moment, studying the readout of his vitals one last time before making myself look at him. âIf anything feels off â if the pain gets worse or you feel short of breath, I swear to the Force, Hunter, you need to tell me.â It was supposed to be an order, but the desperation drowning me left it anything but, and the softness in the way he sighed my name robbed me of even a sliver of denial that he hadnât noticed as he slowly crossed the room.
âI will.â He could have mocked me; could have dismissed my fears with overly confident boasts and promises, but he didnât, and that granted a far greater comfort that he could possibly know⌠StillâŚ
âI donât like thisâŚâ I barely whispered it, finally letting the weight of that terrible dread tug at the corners of my lips, shoulders sinking with a helplessness neither of us had any hope of fixing.
âI know.â He murmured. For just a moment, his shoulder tensed, arm just beginning to move before he forced it still, and I mourned the loss of that touch he hadn't allowed himself to give, the warmth of his hand stolen from me for fear of wandering eyes and over-eager rumors.
My gaze fell, lingering for just a moment on that hand, on the ridges of veins and spiderwebs of scars, on the memory of the dizzying contrast between the roughness of calluses stretching across palm and fingertips alike, and how gentle I knew his touch to be.
âSomeone stays with you.â That, at least, carried some hint of authority as I drew a shaky breath before looking back up at him. âI don't care what happens, someone stays with you at all times.â The patches of bare skin where the electrodes had gone refused to let me forget how still heâd been between those horrid moments when his body had seized beneath the flood of electricity meant to restart his heart. The bruising had already begun fading from his chest, but Iâd never be able to forget how stark the outline of my palms had looked, how dark the mottled purples and red were in those hours after bringing him backâŚ
He let out a quiet huff at my order, head tilting down slightly to better hold my gaze.
âYes, maâam.â My lips pursed slightly at that teasing lilt, and I had to fight back the threat of heat spreading up my neck at the low rumble of his voice.
Drawing a deep breath, I finally turned away from him, attention falling back to my datapad to clear him before I could find some excuse not to.
âAnd youâre wearing a chest brace.â I added, cheeks burning at the quiet chuckle it drew from him.
âAlright.â He hummed through that little smirk that sent my heart racing, brow hitching slightly. âAnything else?â My jaw jut forward against the smile toying with the edge of my own lips.
âGive me a sec, and Iâll think of something.â I shot back, arms crossing my chest with a heatless glare, but he only responded with another soft laugh.
The following day passed in a blur; endless paperwork to finish, a shocking amount of supplies to restock, as well as overseeing what precious few hours of physical therapy I could force each of them through before we were scheduled to leave. Nearly each of them, at least. Wrecker's knee had some lingering stiffness, but that faded with minor warmups. Tech's arm was still notably weak, but he assured me he'd already tested for nerve damage, and I had no reason to doubt him, resigned to merely monitor it over the coming weeks. Crosshair had spent much of the time aboard the massive flagship in their gun range, and he had no qualms with proving just how thoroughly his eyes had healed. But Echo⌠Echo had vanished under the guise of ârequisitioning" materials to finish building his new legs, an occasional message our only reassurance that he was still onboard.
I shouldn't have been surprised to note the missing supplies during my final check of the Marauder's medbay, but the little pang of disappointment was there regardless. The night cycle had nearly begun, and the thought of sinking in-between warm sheets and warmer arms taunted me as I reluctantly noted the missing bacta and bandages, and started wearily back to the hanger's storage room, empty box cocked against my hip.
Night had little meaning in space. It was a label meant only to grant some illusion of familiarity; a place-keeper for the sake of simplicity despite the fact that ânight" had a thousand different meanings on a thousand different planets. What days or weeks spent in the in-between of hyperspace were usually used to gradually adjust perception to match the cycle of oneâs destination.
The Vigilance, however, had no destination. If she neared a planet, it was for the sake of a brutal onslaught void of any consideration toward night and day. Men died in the darkness just as easily as in the light. So the Vigilance rotated between an imagined night and day solely because such a thing was expected, but, in truth, it made no difference beyond a simple shift change to those sentenced to remain in that liminal existence. Solders still marched through halls on patrol amidst maintenance crews and cleaner bots and all manner of workers striving to keep the vessel ready to fight at a moment's notice, and they spared me little consideration as I wove between them, just another cog churning within the Republicâs war.
âIt was a trick question.â My attention snapped up, surprised to find a clone standing a few meters away just within the door of the supply room, a tentative smile on his youthful face. I nearly glanced behind me, but there was no mistaking who he was speaking to.
âI⌠didnât ask a question.â I replied hesitantly, mind struggling to make sense of the odd interaction as I studied the man before me. His left brow was split from some barely visible scar, and his nose was ever so slightly askew, but his eyes were free of that haunted distance that had become far too common among the more war-hardened soldiers.
âDroid poppers.â He said as though that might explain everything. A moment later, I finally realized that it did, eyes widening, and his lips pulled into a broad grin, shoulders shaking with the faintest hint of laughter. My mouth opened, but I was too surprised to fathom a response.
âJester.â He offered stealing a few slow steps closer., and I couldnât quite hide the wince, but he only laughed harder.
âFeel like I might owe you an apology for that.â I offered with a sympathetic chuckle.
âWell, I did have a couple more⌠exciting names I would have preferred, butâŚâ he shrugged, âI kind of earned it.â The ease of his aloofness was a stark balm to the heaviness of the past several days, and I readily welcomed that lightness with a smile of my own.
âI donât think that was a trick question.â I belatedly retorted, instantly earning an animated eyeroll.
âBut it was definitely meant to make me look like a damn fool.â I couldnât help but snicker, nose scrunching with a knowing smirk.
âJust be glad I sent you to Wrecker instead of Tech.â He let out a heavy huff at my response.
âTech was there.â He stated flatly, and I let out an unapologetic snort. âI think heâs going to try to make my entire batch repeat basic chemistryâŚâ
âBut now you know how to make an incendiary grenade from spare parts.â I teased. His shoulders dropped, brows furrowing above a fond glare.
âYeah. Several ways, in fact.â He drawled, earning another bout of laughter from me.
âHeâs⌠really nice.â Jesterâs voice fell into a near whispered, expression softening with a touch of remorse.
âYeah,â I murmured quietly, âHe really is⌠They all are.â I added, but the skeptical look he shot me drew a knowing chuckle even as I tried to suppress it. âThey are.â I pressed. âJust⌠need to earn it, first.â His gaze fell at that, jaw shifting stiffly as that remorse grew.
âI tried to apologize⌠He wouldnât even let me finish.â
âWords⌠donât really matter much to him.â I explained gently. âYou reached out⌠And since Crosshair was there and you donât have any black eyes, Iâm assuming you did it respectfully.â He let out a quiet huff.
âThanks.â He whispered after a brief moment of silence. I didnât have to wait long before he continued. âI needed some sense knocked into me⌠would have preferred you do it in a less embarrassing way, butâŚâ His eyes rose back to meet mine. âThanks.â
âLetâs not make a habit of it.â I replied, words quiet before drawing a deep breath and glancing back at the still empty crate. âYou got out of it last time, but, since youâre here, how about you help me pack for our next mission?â That beaming smile instantly returned to his lips as he eagerly started toward me.

Hardcase kisses you gently, baby cradled in one arm, âYou are already doing better than I did, and definitely better than I will in a couple of weeks,â
The reminder that he was shipping out in two weeks struck you and you shook your head, âI should be staying here with you!âÂ
âNope. As much as Iâd like to keep you here, you have things to do and so do I.âhe answered. He had intended on finishing a commission he had that morning after you left.Â
âI could take care of her while you finishâŚâ you begin.Â
âWe got it, you know that,â he reminded you. It was true, the pair had bonded very quickly. Also she would take a solid morning nap, giving him plenty of time. âAnd you need to make sure they donât plan something too ridiculous for the cake.â
âOkay, okay,â you conceded, kissing your babyâs head and then Hardcase one more time. âYou two take care of each other,â
âGot it, have fun!â He grinned. Once the door closed behind you he looked down at the baby. âOkay lil bit, letâs do this,â.Â
A half hour later the baby was content with a fresh diaper and having freshly finished a bottle. She was dozing in the birikad he had strapped to his chest while he drew, humming along to some music he had on. He had just finished and sent it off to be approved when his com went off. Loudly. Cursing himself for forgetting to put it on silent he quickly answered it, but not before it woke the baby.Â
âYeah, JessâŚwhatâs up? He asked, balancing the com and extracting the now distressed infant out of the sling.Â
âI heard you were home by yourself withâŚ. Why is she crying? What did you do?â Jesse demanded.Â
âYou did it. You called and I think you actually scared the piss out of her,â Hardcase grumbled at his brother. âShe needs changing. Talk to you later.â He ended the call with Jesse protesting on the other end.
He comforted her while taking her to change her. âYour baâvodu is a diâkut, lil bitâ he told her as he began changing her diaper, after she had calmed some. âI think maybe some tummy time?â
âThen your baâvodu Dogma blasted that darjetii,â he mocked the sound of a blaster shot. The baby, who was watching him intently smiled at him. âOr thatâs what I was told. I was still out of commission,â he was distracted by his com vibrating. âWonder what Kix needs?â
âYou okay, vod? Jesse is losing his mind, something about adâikaâŚâ Kix said as soon as he answered.Â
âDiâkut panicked because he heard I was by myself with her and she was crying because the com scared her awake.â Hardcase explained.
âSo everything is okay?â Kix asked.Â
âWe are just fine,â Hardcase told him. âI was just telling her about Umbara and about to get her a bottle because itâs almost time,â
âThatâs not appropriate for kids, âCase!â Kix scolded.Â
âVod, itâs not like she can understand what Iâm saying. She just likes to hear me talk.â He laughed. âIâm going to get her that bottle now, sheâs making hungry faceâÂ
He ended the call with Kix and said to his newborn daughter, âtwo of your baâvoduse are diâkute,â
Hardcase gave her another bottle and she dozed in her birikad again, snuggled in where could easily glance down and see her face. There was a boloball game later that he wanted to watch, but he had a while to wait. So, he started the game system. He had just logged on and was waiting for his game to start when his com vibrated again.Â
âShouldnât you be watching adâika?â Fives asked from the other end.Â
Hardcase glanced down, yup still asleep. âYeah, sheâs asleep,â
âBut you logged on, you should beâŚâ Fives continued. Hardcase could hear Echo in the background.Â
âVod, she is attached to me. Sheâs sleeping in her birikad Rex gave us.â Hardcase was getting actually annoyed now. Three calls from his vode. In contrast other than the gushing you had responded with when he had snapped a few holos and sent them through the day you hadnât worried.
âShe needs enrichment, the book saysâŚâ Echo had obviously snatched the phone from Fives. He had read a book about âBabyâs first yearâ like it was the regs. The difference was, he knew the regs to know how to bend them. But like her other uncles he was excessively protective over the littlest addition.
Hardcase ended the call, cutting Echo off. âALL of your baâvoduse are diâkute,â he huffed, looking down at the still sleeping baby.  âWait⌠not all!â Â
He selected a com frequency. âEverything okay, Hardcase?â Rex asked when he answered. An expected amount of concern in his voice, but not frantic like the others. Hardcase explained what had been happening. Rex laughed, âIâll order them to retreat, they should know you would call if you needed help, diâkute. Are you planning on watching the game?â
Five minutes later a sternly worded retreat order came over the Torrent com frequency while Hardcase began to play his game.
When you come home later, you find the two on the couch, watching the boloball game. Hardcase wearing a jersey for his favorite team with the baby in a matching one. He was animatedly explaining the game to her while she watched him with the smile she got whenever he talked to her.
âDid you two have fun?â you ask as you give each of them a kiss.
âOther than my brothers being a pain, yeah!â he answered.
âI heard about that,â you laugh as you kick off your shoes to curl up on the couch with them.
âHow about you, did you have fun?â He asked as you settled next to him, leaning your head on his shoulder.
âMmm hmmm, missed you two though,â you sigh.
He kisses the top of your head, âWe missed you too, Babe,â
Thanks for reading!

Summary: Loving Cody is easy. It is too easy, for all that he doesnât and will never feel the same way. But, maybe you can turn your attention to someone whoâs been waiting for you to see him.
Pairing: One-sided Cody x F!Reader, Pre Bly x Reader
Word Count: 1500
Warnings: Reader gets kidnapped and starved.
A/N: It was just too cold to write this morning, lol. But I've warmed up since then and I love Bly, so here it is.

From the day you met him, youâve loved Cody.
You love his smile, his quiet jokes, and how you feel safe when youâre with him. You love the way his eyes crinkle when heâs genuinely happy, and the way his nose scrunches when heâs disgusted.
And heâll never feel the same way.
Oh, you donât doubt that heâs fond of you. Heâs always happy to see you, and he enjoys how youâre happy to cook for him and his brothers, though he teases you about using them as taste testers, rather than cooking for them because you want to do something nice.
Heâs protective of you, and your time, and you know heâll never allow anyone to take advantage of you, or harm you, so long as heâs around.
But he doesnât love you.
And itâs fine.
Really.
He doesnât have to love you. You arenât entitled to his love just because you loved him first. Youâre happy having his affection and his friendship. You are.
Sure, some nights you lay in bed and fantasize about what-if.Â
What if he did love you? What if he looked at you like you look at him? What if, when youâre with him, his stomach flips and his heart clenches? What if he lays in bed and thinks about you?
Most nights, however, those thoughts turn into tears.
But, no one knows about it. The only one who knows your silent grief is your comforter, and it doesnât tell stories.
And so, you go on day by day. Greeting Cody with bright smiles and light jokes, and when he shows up with a girlfriend, you greet her politely and make sure that she doesnât have any food allergies, and you treat her like a friend.
Sure, maybe she doesnât last longer than a month or, in one situation, an evening, but youâre still kind and polite.
Itâs ironic, youâve actually managed to make some friends with his exes.Â
And you know Cody appreciates it. He told you, once, that he was glad that you were so welcoming to the people around you, and then he continued by telling you that youâre too nice for your own good.
You canât help how you are as a person, and so you wave off his concerns when he brings it up. It doesnât matter, in the long run, because he has all of his brothers looking out for you.
So, you suppose, if you want to be accurate, you have to admit that he does love you. But he loves you like a friend loves a friend, not like how a man loves a woman.
At least heâs still in your life, even if itâs not how you want. You just have to take what you can get.
But, all the same, when youâre kidnapped several months later due to your friendship with several Marshal Commanders, you know that no one will come for you.
All you can do is keep your mouth shut and pretend that you donât know what your kidnapper is asking. You canât do much, but you can protect them at least a little.
Youâre not sure how long itâs been. Thereâs no way to tell what time of day it is here in the cell that has been your room since you were snatched from your apartment.Â
It must have been at least a month. At this point someone must have noticed that you went missing, right?
Itâs not like your kidnapper was subtle about snatching you, seeing as they kicked open the door and destroyed your apartment in the process of kidnapping you.
Of course, who would they send to save you? The Guard? The Police?
No one?
The idea of dying in a tiny cell so far from home, so far from the people you love most, makes you want to cry. But you stop yourself before you can start. You only get a single cup of water a day.
You canât afford to waste it.
Just as you wrap your thin blanket around you, and are considering moving to the other side of the thin cot that has been your bed for who even knows how long, you think you hear the sound of blaster fire.
Your gaze flickers towards the door of your cell as the sound gets louder and louder.
And then, you hear a voice. Familiar in the way that all clone voices are familiar.
âHere! I found it!â You hear some scuffling from outside the door, and then what you assume is a curse in Mandoâa. Then, finally, the door slides open and stays open.
The man on the other side of the door is wearing white armor with yellow markings. Familiar yellow markings.
â...Bly?â
âYouâre a hard lady to find, Sugarpop.â You scrunch up your nose at the nickname. Yeah. Itâs Bly. Heâs the only person in the galaxy who calls you Sugarpop.
âItâs not like I did it intentionally.â
âI know.â He steps into the cell and with surprisingly gentle hands, he coaxes you to your feet, âHow are you? Are you hurt anywhere?â
â...Iâm hungry. And cold.â
âI bet you are. No shoes?â
âThey took them so I couldnât run away.â
âFuckers. We should have killed them slower.â
He really shouldnât sound so cheerful when saying that. But it doesnât actually bother you.
âBly?â
âYeah, Sugarpop?â
âCan I go home now?â
He stills and then a slightly strangled laugh fall from him, âWell, you seeâŚâ
âBly?â
âWeâre not on Coruscant.â He says hurriedly, âWeâre actually in the outer rim. Youâve been a guest of the Hutt Cartel for the better part of 6 months.â
You stare at him, âSixâŚ?â
âYeah, Sugarpop. Six.â
â...my jobâŚmy apartment?â
âAh, wellâŚthe Jedi did what they could, but both your boss and your landlord decided that you were dead three months in and you lost both.â
âOh.â
âBut, itâll work out!â Bly sets his hands on your shoulders, and you can almost see his brow furrow through his visor, âYouâve lost weight. A lot of weight.â
âWellâŚwellâŚI probably needed to anywayâŚâ You offer, feeling slightly numb.
âBullshit, you were perfect.â
You blink at him again, âThank you?â
âWeâll get you healthy again, and you can help out in the kitchen.â Bly offers cheerfully as he guides you out of the cell and lifts you over a pile of broken droids, âItâll be great.â
âThere are a lot of droids here,â You mumble, more to yourself, as you nudge something away with your foot.
âYeah, looks like the Hutts are working with the Seppies.â Bly glances at you, âYou know what, Sugarpop? I think Iâm just going to carry you.â
âYou donât have toââ
He scoffs as he scoops you into his arms, âHave to? Please. Iâd pay for the honor.â
You stare at him, even as you slide your arms around his neck so you feel more secure, âBly?â
âHmm?â
âAre you flirting with me? While rescuing me?â
He glances at you, âYeah. I am.â Bly glances away, âCodyâs a blind idiot if he canât see how you look at him.â
Your face burns, âI wasnât trying to be transparentâŚâ
âYou werenât Sugarpop. I just watch you a lot.â Lightly, he bumps his helmet against your forehead, âJust waiting for the day you look at me like that.â
Bly steps over a pile of something that was probably a person at one point, and you drop your head to his shoulder. As he walks, you go back through all of the conversations you remember having with Bly, and slowly you come to a realization.
âBly, have you been flirting with me since we met?â
He laughs, âYouâre just now noticing? Oh, Sugarpop, we need to give you lessons on being more observant.â
You huff and nudge him gently, âDonât be mean. Humans are notoriously bad at detecting flirting.â
âYeah, wellâŚâ He pauses for a moment to kick a door open, âCodyâs an idiot and Iâm right here if you want to turn those pretty eyes on me.â
âJust like that?â
âHey, Iâm a patient guy. And itâs a long flight back to Coruscant.â He carefully sets you back on your feet and he lifts his helmet to rest on top of his head, âI think youâll find that Iâm a pretty charming guy.â
Itâs at that very moment that you notice that his grin is slightly lopsided and that his eyes are a few shades lighter than Codyâs. And it almost feels like a betrayal when your stomach flips nervously.
âIs that your opinion?â You ask as you ignore the butterflies fluttering in your stomach.
His grin widens, âNope, lots of people have that opinion.â Something in his gaze softens, and his fingers brush your cheek, âIâm glad youâre not hurt, Sugarpop.â
A tiny smile lifts your lips, âThank you for coming to get me, Bly.â
Thereâs a serious glimmer in his gaze as he takes your hand and brushes his thumb across your knuckles, âAlways.â

Never gonna get over the fact that Captain Rex spent FOUR episodes with The Bad Batch, during which time:
Tech nearly wipes out a runway construction crew, Tokyo Drift style
Crosshair picks 3 separate fights with regs, including Rex himself (and Rex socks him in the face for it)
Hunter literally looks Rex in the face after receiving orders and says âehhh yeah noâ and then proceeds to charge an approaching enemy squadron head on
Wrecker begs to explode just about every single building they lay eyes on
Hunter confesses to a Jedi general that heâs never submitted a single report in his life
Hunter also goes for a joyride by dangling from the foot of a giant winged beast from a single rappelling line
Tech later convinces them all to jump through the air onto the backs of said winged beasts in the middle of heavy enemy fire after summoning them with his self-made Animal Sound Spotify
Wrecker destroys like 100 battle droids in 3.5 seconds with his bare hands and laughs like a maniac the entire time
Crosshair, rather than let himself be shown up by Wrecker, destroys like 1/6 of the enemy forces with tiny hand mirrors and a single laser shot
The entire batch is sassing each other THE ENTIRE TIME (âdonât worry, Wrecker, IâLL hold your handâ âyeahâŚitâs a liftâ âme and the boys will tag along, just to say I told you soâ)
And after all of that, Rex looked at Echo and was like âyeah I think weâve found your new homeâ and Echo was just like đđ

The jubilant breeze tumbling throughout the confines of the courtyard perched just opposite those glass doors instantly brandished her hair from her shoulders, beaming rays pouring mercilessly from overhead instantly capitalizing on the opportunity to remind her enraged skin of its power, and she near-winced upon feeling her neck prickle neath its unwelcome intensity.Â
âYou okay?â Howzer asked as they trod down the half dozen stairs toward the locked gate, seemingly noting the sudden cringe atop her features.Â
âYeah, fine,â June answered casually. âSpent too much time by the pool with my friend the other day and Iâm still paying for it.âÂ
âI saw that,â he chuckled, offering a sympathetic little grimace. âIâd offer some advice but I honestly canât say Iâve ever had too bad of a sunburn.âÂ
âYeah, well⌠Quit bragginâ,â June demanded with a smile. âI say this to my best friend all the time: not all of us are gloriously melanous.âÂ
A tingle unrelated to that overhead radiance rolled down her back as his head tipped backward amidst a genuine laugh, and attempting to veil the flush rising rapidly back to her cheeks, she quickly reached to fiddle with the cuff of her sleeve⌠only to remember she was not wearing long sleeves, instead awkwardly shoving a dawdling finger neath the strap of her watch and giving it an pointless twist around her wrist.
As it turned out, the Combat Baseâs close proximity to their chosen cafe perfectly elucidated why Hutchieâs was an establishment of which sheâd never heard. Though for how distant it was from the central, senatorial sector of which June was largely familiar, only mere steps atop the pathway leading toward the jovial tinkle of its distant doorbell exposed how just how favoured of a spot it was for the denizens. Â
Yet even more astonishing than the steady flow of travel cup-laden patrons, stolling past with their steaming flimsi containers of delightful aromatic caf, was truly how simple it was to converse with the man next to her. Despite the butterflies in her stomach continuing their silent attempts at internal homicide, chatting with Howzer felt as intuitive as simply placing one foot in front of the other atop that bustling pathway.Â
Though their first encounter had far superseded the second in terms of duration, the plaguing ailment and the gentle coaxing heâd required before consenting to treatment had, unfortunately, dominated most of their conversation. Their only encounter since had been tragically too-short to engage in anything more than the hopelessly giddy âhi, I have to run but I really hope Iâll see you soon!â sentiments before the pair parted ways with dopey smiles atop their lips.Â
And in the void of pain or urgency, it was difficult not to marvel at just how casually that Captain carried himself. Imbued an insouciant energy of which June was sure sheâd never be able to embody as effortlessly as Howzer did, breezy probes at conversation spilled from his lips as if he were intrinsically aware of all the topics she could chitter about for hours (though the way that mildly crooked smile wrapped its way around each word had her increasingly confident she would have been perfectly content to just listen to the music of that accented tone). Meanwhile, those large, boot-clad feet moved unhurried toward their destination as if the pathway itself had wordlessly offered to glide below at whatever speed heâd prefer; thankfully heâd defaulted to a cadence more comfortable for her much shorter legs.Â
As they wove through the ambling crowd, Howzer gushed about his Company; the 742nd was, admittedly, an anomaly of sorts. Not only did their authority ladder end with a Clone Commander and not the Jedi General that typically apexed large sectors of soldiers, but a period of extensive training in its earliest days of formation had seen those boys in teal thrust into an unusual hybrid role. Though classified as a âreconnaissance collection company subfractured from the 91stâ, the 742nd was often deployed, instead, as an âassault and secure forceâ, meaning they were just as frequently tasked with infiltrating an enemy base and securing its perimeter until such a time that reinforcements could arrive and claim the location as their own. Yet, he spoke of his career with the same admirable informality as he would speak of the weather, reminiscing of battles as if recalling the events of a party heâd recently attended, and though she was sure it had rendered her expression to something near a slack-jawed grouper fish, that unforeseen disposition had captured Juneâs attention and simply refused to free it. Â
His perspective of war seemed âŚwell, different to anything sheâd overheard from soldiers amidst her duties at work. Often those armoured troopers spoke of their duty with an unignorable severity; of the responsibility they carried to both loyally serve and immutably protect the Republic to which they served; of their allegiance to their COâs, their brethren, and the legion theyâd been assigned; of the demand for stoic, unvarying courage in the face of enemies theyâd never seen before. Howzer spoke of governing his men as if they were nothing but a bizarrely oversized and appropriately dysfunctional familyâ âvod, he kept calling them before quickly explaining this was a common Mandoâa word for brother. He spoke of their battle experiences as if those teal painted men had collectively experienced several disjointed parts of a larger, harrowing adventure; those that were sadly killed on the way were celebrated to a higher degree than those that survived, as the lost had simply moved on to a more exhilarating life of which none of them knew just yet. He spoke of the unremitting desire and obligation to keep his men groundedâ to ensure they felt nothing but relative ease and confidence as they marched into the relative unknownâŚÂ
âJust in here.âÂ
June wrenched her gaze from that enamoring square jaw as he slowed his pace and veered slightly toward a glass door on the right, instead redirecting her eyes upward toward the sign overhead. Hung from the soffit by two oversized copper chains, that deep emerald placard and the loopy gold cursive laying bare the name of that little cafe was immediately familiar, Juneâs mind quickly extracting the image of the tiny green card she'd opened and cherished some days previous.Â
âOh, thank you,â she muttered upon realizing Howzer had pulled the door ajar and was waiting for her to enter ahead of him.Â
But hardly a step through the door and into that foreign space had thrust an inherently wholesome fragrance into her nose; unseen steaming loaves of delicious crusty sourdough bread, carafes of fresh caf gurgling just out of sight, crystallized and caramelized sugars mixed with an enticing blend of aromatic spices⌠vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon, clove⌠and something earthy and deeply familiar.Â
Though her olfactory system seemed instantly content enough to simply stand atop that threshold and breathe in those potent whiffs of sheer delight, the opportunity was usurped by just how visually overwhelming the interior of that tiny shop was.Â
âWow,â June whispered, gaze dancing fervently from corner to corner, item to item, person to person, whilst her feet took her thoughtlessly in Howzerâs wake toward the treat laden display cases on the left.Â
Like her companion, Hutchieâs was nothing short of âŚdifferent. Utterly void of that sterile rigidity of which Coruscant remained notorious, three steps into that creaky, rustic cafe had June feeling as if sheâd been unknowingly transported to a little bistro on a distant planet. High ceilings and limewashed walls worked in tandem to ensure that relatively cramped square footage was suffused with an indescribable, natural comfort. Taking up the majority of the cafeâs interior real estate was a sitting area along the right side; dozens of time-worn wooden chairs housing patrons of all shapes, colours, and sizes, an equi-diverse array of baked treats perched atop tables anchoring those esoteric conversations.Â
âOuuu, Alocasia Zebrina!â June suddenly uttered aloud, excitement surging through her veins as her eyes affixed themselves upon a very familiar-looking striped plant perched in the center of those scrubbed pine tops.Â
âSay again?â Howzer asked, the din of chatter echoing around those four corners forcing him to lower his ear to only inches from her lips.Â
âUm, Alocasia Zebrina,â she repeated somewhat meekly, the subtle addition of his aftershave in her nose quickly overpowering that fleeting glee. âThe plant on all the tables. I have one at home too. Theyâre notoriously hard to keep alive.âÂ
Though not robbed of its clarity by the merciless cacophony still ringing around those walls, his chuckling response went wholly unheard, a sharp gasp escaping Juneâs lips as a searing pain erupted in her knee.Â
âOw!â she exclaimed, left hand absently reaching to steady herself with the nearest pillar of solidity, while the other darted downward to appease her now throbbing leg.
âSorry,â a passerby grunted. âBusy place. Watch where youâre stepping.âÂ
âYou okay?âÂ
Again, Howzer went ignored, Juneâs narrowed gaze affixed on the back of the retreating Zabraki man who had nearly knocked her off her feet as he pushed his way through the throng.Â
âWhat happened?â Howzer tried again, this time successfully stealing her attention.Â
âNothing,â June dismissed, cheeks flushing upon the realization the support sheâd mindlessly sought amidst that unexpected jostle was the crook of that Captainâs elbow. âGuy just knocked into me on his way by. Iâm fine.âÂ
âYeah, this place is always a madhouse,â Howzer answered, resuming normal posture and offering her an apologetic nod. âStay close.âÂ
Whether the shift was intentional or not, June soon found the back of her hand near-clamped between Howzerâs torso and elbow, the gentle pinch heâd applied to seemingly keep her grasp exactly where it had landed instantly took her mind off the bruise forming earnestly just below her kneecap.
As they lumbered forward in that lagging queue, mahogany floorboards creaking with every step, Juneâs focus shifted from the drape of her cold fingers around that scuffed plastoid to the display cases passing on her left sideâ floor to ceiling shelves presented some of the most immaculately prepared pastries sheâd ever laid her eyes on; glazed donuts gleaming like edible orbs neath those overhead lights, richly decadent brownies blanketed in a crust of finely chopped nuts, strudels happily leaking their jellied innards onto the emerald green doilies they laid upon whilst waiting to be ingested. On the other side of that scrumptious exhibit, and only visible through gaps between that prolific array of decadence, scurried a dozen green-aproned staff members. Multicoloured hands of all shapes and sizes appeared routinely behind those delicacies, a sheet of protective wax flimsi draped atop palms preparing to extract the confection that some lucky patron up ahead had just claimed as their own. And though her mouth watered uncontrollably at first sight of a delectable looking meiloorun muffin, Juneâs thoughts had wandered near urgently toward the egregiously overdue caf her very cells continued to demand with each passing, uncaffeinated moment.Â
âWhatcha gettinâ?â Howzer asked as they neared the front counter, her nose flooded with that intoxicating yet unfamiliar, delicate musk as he lowered his lips to a mere breath from her ear.Â
âUmmmm,â June hesitated, brows furrowing as her eyes danced fervently around the exorbitant list of foreign-beaned cafâs scrawled upon a chalkboard on the wall opposite. âWhatever it was that you sent to my office last week?âÂ
âThat was the Apple Java,â he advised her, pointing toward the center of the list. âLarge?âÂ
âExtra-largeâŚâÂ
The sudden exposure of that chronic caf addiction, and the way those dark brows raised at her seemingly mechanical, knee-jerk response, would have had her near-cringing neath the weight of self-consciousness had it not been for the smile quickly peeling across those dark lips, twinkly eyes softening as they danced warmly atop her features.Â
âExtra-large it is,â he repeated with the subtlest of snorts.Â
âIâll buy though,â she hastily added, reaching to extract her wallet from the depths of her bag as he turned to greet the humanoid waiting behind the cash register.Â
âWhat?â he demanded. âNo way! Iâm ordering for like sixteen people.â
âSo?âÂ
âSo! Thatâs going to cost you a fortune.âÂ
âYou fed the entire surgical floor with all those treats last week,â June argued with a shrug, removing her hand from the security of his elbow to unzip her wallet. âI can repay the favour.âÂ
âThat was differenââÂ
âTrust me when I say: Iâm more stubborn than you are, and you will not win this.âÂ
She watched his once-smiling lips purse ahead of unsaid protests, gaze narrowing slightly as it bore into hers, seemingly resolute in witnessing the first twitch of muscle that might lay bare any hesitation on her part⌠but she met that surveying leer with a stern, unwavering one of her own, blue piercing brown as if daring him to object further.Â
âFine,â he consented atop the ghost of chuckle. âBut put that hand back.âÂ
She repressed a smile as he turned and began to order (twelve regular caf, four decaf, and one extra-large Apple Java), every subsequent breath escaping past her lips struggling to ignore the flutter that had erupted in her gut as he'd assertively collected her cold fingers and directed them back to their previous wreath around his elbow. Â
âHereâs the Apple Java, and the decaf,â the cashier announced hardly a minute later, passing a familiar looking flimsi cup across that mahogany counter to Juneâs outstretched palm, and a cardboard carrying tray of four others to Howzer. âWeâre just brewing a fresh pot of regular caf. Give us a few minutes, and weâll call you over when itâs ready.â
June followed in the Captainâs wake a half dozen paces toward one of the smaller tables anchored against the wall, the soul-warming aroma of apple and peekaboo vanilla wafting upward from the container in her hands near-banishing those irksome butterflies. With a small squeal of released anticipation and excitement she popped open the tab on that duraplas lid and took a sip of that scalding delight.Â
Snickering at the undeniable joy atop her features, Howzer pulled the nearest chair out from its perch beneath that scrubbed pine tabletop and gestured for her to sit, before placing both that laden travel tray and his helmet atop the table between them and taking a seat of his own.Â
âSo youâre a full caffeine kinda guy,â June gleaned with a smirk, noting instantly that Howzer had failed to collect a cup from the collection on the table whilst she cradled hers with both hands. Â
âOh absolutely,â Howzer answered, casting the decaffeinated collection of cups in front of him a near-revolted look. âWhatâs the point of drinking a caf if itâs not to wake you up?â
âWarmth?â June suggested with a small shrug. âFlavour? Even with reduced caffeine levels, itâs a fantastic analeptic. Some like to keep their cortisol levels low. Not to mention it keeps the bowels movingâŚâ Â
June hurried to hide the flush rising earnestly to her cheeks behind that flimsi container as Howzerâs head tipped back amidst a full chested laugh that promised to dismantle her composure, nose scrunching neath his amusement and raising the little hairs on her arms.Â
âI guess those are all pretty valid reasons,â he spoke, draping an arm casually atop the backrest of his seat and peering across the table at her with that characteristic twinkle behind his eyes.Â
She shirked his gaze as discreetly as she could, pretending to pluck a nonexistent piece of fluff from the rim of her drink as she fought to restrain the newly invigorated flapabout in her gut.Â
âTell me about class,â he continued as she hurried to pacify the lingering capriciousness by bringing her caf to her lips again. âWhat happened that made your boss so happy?âÂ
June paused only long enough to force that still blistering liquid down her throat before offering him an evasive, one-shouldered shrug. âI donât know,â she mused, licking the remnants of the last gulp from her top lip and sitting up straight in her chair. âThe guys in class have always seemed so âŚuninterested? It's been really hard to get them to engage with any of the content weâve been trying to teach them, despite doing everything we can to make the lectures interesting.âÂ
âTheyâre just not paying attention?â Howzer probed.Â
âRight⌠or paying attention to the wrong thing, or being disruptive. Some of them would just spend all three lecture hours sleeping⌠Some of them would stare at me like it was some stupid game and it drove me up the kriffing wall⌠Others at least tried to make it look like they were paying attention, but itâs not hard to spot someone thatâs napping with their eyes openâŚÂ
âToday they were actually responsive⌠even borderline excited about what they were learning. I know, for a soldier, itâs probably not super exhilarating stuff that weâre teaching but⌠I donât know. I think itâs all pretty cool once you understand the importance of the material? Maybe Iâm just a giant dork, butâŚâ Â
âWellâŚâ Howzer started as her thoughts trailed away. âYou said it, not me...âÂ
âOh ha ha ha,â June feigned with a roll of her eyes, though a smirk peeled across her lips.Â
The feeling of his amber-eyed, surveying gaze back atop her features forced her eyes back to the lid on her cup, bringing a cold finger to trail thoughtlessly around the rim of that white duraplas.
âI know itâs easier said than done, but try not to take it too personally,â Howzer continued after a momentâs pause. âThatâs a bit of a weird age for troopers, to be honest. This is their first time off Kamino. Theyâre used to being barked at round the clock by ARC Troopers who wouldnât recognize âconsiderationâ if it bit them on the ass. All these guys know is having their critical thinking tested every minute of every day, learning respect, and camaraderie, and strategy⌠all that kind of stuff. Now theyâre sitting in a quiet classroom on a foreign planet, separated from everyone they grew up with, being taught combat medicine by civilians. Itâs no excuse for, well⌠staring, but itâll all be pretty foreign to those guys for a while.âÂ
Gnawing mindlessly on her left thumbnail, June let his words wash over her, a peculiar sensation lurching deep in her gut that felt something-near âŚguilt.Â
âHmm,â she hummed, pulling her finger from its clamp between her lips atop the cold realization that maybe⌠after all these weeks⌠she hadnât been the only person uncomfortable in that classroom. âSo it probably feels as awkward for them as it does for me?â
Howzer nodded, that infamously warm gaze thankfully lacking any semblance of judgment or critique as it landed back upon her. âProbably more so, considering almost all of them have probably never talked to a girl before. I know the âhot teacherâ comment bothered you but⌠theyâre still learning.â  Â
âWho said it bothered me?â June retorted, though the indignance of her demand diminished instantly upon seeing the deeply skeptical look he cast from across the table. Pursing her lips to repress a culpable grin, she hid behind her coffee cup and asked, âI was that obvious, eh?â
âJune, your face speaks louder than your words ever could,â he snickered. âThose eyes could light someone on fire if they glared hard enough.â Â
June offered only a repressed snort, unable to offer him the titter he deserved whilst her insides churned amidst a simmering remorse that she hadnât expected to feel for that century of once-disrespectful soldiers. âKriff, now I feel like an asshole,â she mumbled.Â
âNah, donât sweat it,â Howzer replied with an appeasing smile. âTheyâre tough. And if theyâre not yet, they will be soon. Butââ Abruptly plagued by an unprecedented wash of what appeared to be diffidence, he paused to clear his throat and redirect his gaze to a blemish on the crown of his helmet. ââIf you want them to stop staring, Iâd maybe ditch the glasses.âÂ
âWhat?â June asked, upper lip cocking in confusion. âWhy?âÂ
âDonât get me wrong,â he started, eyes following his fingers as they began to absently drum atop that worn wooden table. âTheyâre nice. Um, really nice. Almost distracting⌠I guess?â Â
The profound reddening of his ears nowhere matched that of her cheeks. Skin prickling as uncomfortably as if the beaming sun beyond that tinkling doorbell had managed to scorch both her shoulders and every inch of her face, she instantly lifted her hand again to subconsciously hide behind that emerald green cup.Â
âCafâs up!âÂ
That stentorian call thankfully spared June the need to respond, and they stood from those rickety wooden chairs as if the seats had suddenly burned white hot below their butts. As Howzer scooped his helmet from the table and tucked it neatly neath his arm, June collected the travel tray and followed him back toward the counter.Â
The twelve regular cups of caf had been smartly divided into trays of four like their decaffeinated counterparts, but with one of Juneâs hands occupied by her own cup, and Howzerâs helmet plaguing the mobility of his right arm, it quickly became little more than a game of tetris attempting to figure out exactly how the only two remaining limbs were going to successfully cargo sixteen steaming cups of caf for the four-block journey back to Base.Â
After several precarious and time-consuming attempts at stacking them on top of each other, and much to the mixed amused annoyance of the still bustling queue behind them, June heaved a sigh. âCan you just put that damn helmet on,â she bossed at Howzer atop an exasperated chuckle. âWe need your second arm.âÂ
âNo,â Howzer refuted instantly. âI wonât be able to see you properly. And I donât like having it on if I donât have to...âÂ
âYou donât need to see me, you just need to see where youâre walkiââ
âBut I want tââÂ
ââKay fine,â she interjected, rolling her eyes and putting her cup of caf down on the counter. âIf you balance them on my arm, I can take two trays in one hand and my cup in the other.â Though he cocked an eyebrow at her in a motion of unadulterated doubt, she dismissed his silent concern with an impatient shake of the head. âItâs okay, I used to be a server.âÂ
Atop the rapidly growing pressure of agitation behind them, June insisted. âIâll be fine, just do it before someone tries to take out my other kneecap.â Â
Looking as though he thoroughly disagreed with this seemingly impulsive plan, Howzer carefully lowered one tray on top of the other on Juneâs awaiting right wrist, hands lingering only inches from that teetering tower, poised to resume the weight should she let slip even a whimper of discomfort.Â
Though it prickled against her sunburnt chest, letting those heavy trays tip backward against her skin diminished some of their burden, and she quickly offered him a nod of approval before collecting her own cup and stepping back from the counter. Once Howzer had balanced his own allotted pair of travel trays, they carefully made for the door.Â
âYou were going to send a cadet to do this?â June snorted as they traversed that sunlit path back to Base, heart seizing for the fourth time in as many minutes as her dribbling freight gave a perilous wobble in her arms and threatened to douse her lower half in scalding hot caf.Â
âAbsolutely,â he laughed. âItâs a great character building exercise.â
âCharacter building?!â she repeated, utterly aghast. âPffffft! Seems kinda mean if you ask me, but if thatâs what lets you sleep at night.âÂ
âSays the girl who slept in this morning,â he snarked back at her, turning to give her a smirk so dazzling, the discomfort of that hot and heavy cargo momentarily vanished.
âYou know what,â June argued neath a chuckle, âI think I deserve a little credit for not sleeping in every kriffing morning. Not only do my shifts never end on time, but my bed is soft, and big, and warm, and a challenge to get out of on any given dayâŚâÂ
âSounds like a place Iâd like to be,â Howzer chortled, turning to grant a fellow trooper in a suit of white and orange a casual nod as they passed each other along that path.Â
Howzer clearly thought nothing of it, continuing toward their destination unaffected by that off-the-cuff remark, and wholly unaware of the way Juneâs shoulders had slumped near-theatrically in its wake. Yet, Juneâs stomach fell with speed thrice that of which they walked, disappointment wiping the lingering remnants of that diminishing amusement from her lips whilst the darkest corner of her mind eagerly raised a red flag and flapped it earnestly across her awareness.Â
âSo thatâs what he wants,â she concluded, the hubris of her distaste for men instantly usurping the unfamiliar giddiness that had seen her near-intoxicated by his presence for days⌠weeks. âTo visit to my bed.âÂ
And the sudden and complete banishment of that teased sense of adventureâ that fleeting feeling of âmaybe I was wrongâ or âmaybe there are men I can tolerateâŚâ â had that once gloriously enriching Apple Java cascading down the back of her tongue like spoiled vinegar.Â
âSorryââ she muttered after a contemptuous snort, dropping her gaze to her toes and watching that gum-embedded pathway lead them back to Base. âBy formal invitation only.âÂ
An impossibly urgent sense of relief surged through her veins as the first signs of that construction-laden building came into view across the road, the gargantuan glass doors theyâd left through some time earlier glimmering in the oppressive midday sun as they approached that barbed gate, stopping only so Howzer could scan his wrist comm below the sensor and permit them access.Â
âJune?âÂ
It was only then she realized heâd been talking. Too lost in her own welling disappointment and simmering sense of regret, sheâd thoughtlessly tuned out everything around her.Â
âSorry, yeah?â she answered, squinting amidst the effort of finding that olive face.Â
âYou still okay there?â Howzer repeated, gesturing with a nod to the cargo sheâd, once again, entirely forgotten she was carrying.Â
âYeah, Iâm fine,â she lied, knowing if she divulged the small river of scalding hot caf trickling from her wrist to her elbow, it would only further delay the end of this interaction.Â
âOkay. Gimme one quick sec,â Howzer requested of her, stopping as the gate closed behind them and shifting his own freight enough to bring his forearm to his mouth. âSpades⌠come in.âÂ
ââSup, cap?â chirped a nearly identical voice through the static of that hidden communication system.Â
âStatus on barracks?â Howzer asked.Â
âBarracks?â that voice repeated neath an incredulous laugh. âUhhh⌠well, nine battalions have landed since last night so itâs safe to say âcrowdedâ is an appropriate word.â
âDuty or dismissed?âÂ
âUnless uniform policy has changed and weâre allowed to loaft around in our underwear on duty, Iâm going to guess dismissed. Why? Arenât you supposed to be in the briefing anyway?âÂ
âMeeting doesnât start for a few minutes,â Howzer clarified, and Iâve, er⌠got some company. Thanks for the intel.âÂ
June watched him glance somewhat apologetically in her direction before ending that somewhat cryptic conversation, eyes hardening slightly, as if her labeling her as such was mildly offensive.Â
âCompany?â she scowled. âBarracks?â
âYou trying to show off your bed, now?â June queried with a cocked brow, watching that sharp jaw tense whilst he chewed his lip, brown eyes narrowed in concentration as he silently deciphered some mental puzzle she wasnât yet privy to Â
âNo,â Howzer chuckled, a lop-sided smile returning quickly to those lips. âTrust me, itâs nothing to bat an eye at. Come on, weâll go through the hangar.â
