So here are my tips for drawing side profile views and study people’s faces! I wish I could explain more but I’m all over the place I’m sorry ㅠㅠㅠㅠ but well, I hope this can be useful for someone!

How do you draw noses?

I’m not sure what specific part you’re wondering about, so here’s a run-through of my process from sketching to painting!

1) The first thing I do is simplify the nose into a few basic shapes to get a prism-like block, like so:

2) I can now easily draw the prism shape in three-dimensional space depending on the angle and rotation of the head.

3) Using the guidelines/planes I can draw a proper nose in any angle! There aren’t many tricks or shortcuts for this step, unfortunately (other than practicing lots). I recommend using references, they’re always helpful :)

4) Really important to note: all noses vary greatly, especially from different ethnicities! A high-bridge “aristocratic” sort of nose or a ski-slope button nose might be accurate for some people, but definitely not everyone. Compare differences in size, width, a hooked or button nose tip, high or low nose bridge, and so on:

5) Then I paint! I have a skin tone tutorial here, if it helps. Take note of the lighting, skin tone, etc. Here are some things I keep in mind:

For pale skin tones, the nose sometimes has a redder colouration than the rest of the face because of increased blood flow.

The nose also usually has highlights (due to oil). These are located on the tip of the nose, the nostril groove, and where the base of the nose meets the flat area of skin around it!

Hope this helps! In the end, all stylistic choices are completely up to you. Art’s subjective, so feel free to draw any noses you want :)

For writers: historical women’s clothing

Those who have been with me for a while know that although I’m not an expert,  I’m super enthusiastic historical clothing. Which means I also notice when it’s totally butchered in writing (I’m looking expecially at you, smut fics). So here are some pointers for your historical/fantasy lady’s clothing, for my peace of mind:

Not everything with laces is a corset. Although terms overlap, we mostly only talk about corsets from mid-19th century. Before that you have stays or bodies, maybe even jumps (unboned, quilted garment). You’re pretty safe with simply saying stays.

Stays cannot be tight-laced! You can only tight-lace if your garment has metal eyelets (otherwise the lacing would tear the fabric, ruining the garment), and those only came in mid-19th century. Your 18th century lady won’t be gasping for air (I’m looking at you, PotC)

That being said, even tight-laced ladies are unlikely to gasp for breath.

Your character won’t be wearing a corset/super structured stays under an empire gown/Regency style dress. That would be totally unnecessary (looking at you, Bridgerton). Character instead would be wearing “transitional stays”–a short, boned garment somewhere between a modern bra and a corset–, or lightly boned/unboned stays. The point of these is to push the boobs up, not to slim down the waist/create a silhouette.

Instead of stays, your early 16th century/fantasy character can wear a boned kirtle–in this case, the bodice and the skirt are made up of one garment.

Stays/corsets can be back laced (mostly earlier stuff), front/front-and-back laced (a bit later), back laced with clasps at the front (Victorian)

Some stays can be worn as outerwear. They can be colorful and intricately decorated.

Gentlemen can and will help their lovers dress; they know how women’s clothing works.

There is always a chemise/shift under the stays! (looking at you, The Tudors.) That is your first layer–it protects the character’s skin from chafing and the character’s clothes from sweat.

Stockings are held just under the knee/mid-thigh with garters/ribbons.

No panties! No underwear, whatsoever. Ruck up those skirts and the banging can commence

There’s such a thing as split drawers (19th century)–which is like a pair of knee-lenght underpants, only the two legs are not connected at the groin area.

Ladies can have pockets–they are basically big pouches that can be tied around the waist with a string. They can be worn over or under the overskirt.

If the pockets are worn under the skirt, then they can be accessed via slits on the sides. This happens when the skirt has a kind of “apron like” fastening: basically, the top of the skirt is made of two rectangular pieces, both of them having their own ties. You first tie the back part on the front, then the front part in the back. And voila! Slits on the sides.

Different Strokes?

I think I left the teller at the bank genuinely disturbed when I told him that “If I can’t afford it, I just don’t buy it.”  “What about a car? Do you drive a car?” he inquired, his voice toning on the edge of fear.   I told him, “Yeah, I have a vehicle. I bought it used for under $3,000.”  He looked physically pained. “What about if you want to buy some kind of new appliance? Or furniture?” he persisted. I stared at him blankly. “My couch was $5.00 at Goodwill. Like…I just buy shit cheap or I don’t buy it at all. The only thing in my life that I make payments on is my house, my bills, and my insurance, and that’s split five ways because I have housemates.”  The young man looked horrified? Appalled? And somehow also awed?  This guy couldn’t have been much older than me. But it seemed that he’d never even considered the option before of saving up for something to purchase it outright instead of using a credit card. Am I the only person in my general age group (just turned 26) who’s never owned a credit card, and who has forgone basic comforts in order to save up for items so you don’t owe money to anyone, like, ever? 

vitiligo notes for artists

I’ve noticed that vitiligo has been becoming more common in art, and I think that’s really cool! But as a person with vitiligo, and an artist, there are few mistakes I’ve noticed in people’s portrayal of the condition that I wanna address. 

1. It’s not random. Vitiligo tends to appear more often in specific places, like around the mouth or eyes, the belly button, as well as on the hands and feet. It also tends to be at least a little bit symmetrical.

2. It doesn’t change your eye color. However in some cases it can cause patches of hair to turn white or blonde. 

3. It changes over time. As a kid I had tons of vitiligo spots on my feet and legs, but they eventually faded. For a long time I didn’t have any until I developed a spot above my right eye about a year ago. So if you’re portraying a character at different points in their life, their vitiligo should change too. 

4. All skin colors can have vitiligo. I’ve noticed on Picrew and other character maker games vitiligo will sometimes only be an option for characters with dark skin. Obviously it won’t be as obvious on light skin, but unless your character is a person with albinism it should still show up.

Potential Virus Risk on AO3 Comments

Hey everyone. So, I wanted to make a post about something I've seen in AO3 comments recently and I wanted to let y'all know so you can be careful.

Today, on two separate fics of mine, I got comments from guests with different names that had what looks like a key smash followed by a weird link. They looked like this:

Now, it is possible that these are legit comments and these links lead to nothing bad. But, in my experience, this looks like a classic phishing scam or a link to a virus. Honestly, I never open links I see online unless I know for sure I can trust the source. And even then I'm a bit hesitant, since I know that accounts can be hacked. I actually deleted the first email and comment immediately and didn't really think about it again. However, after getting another comment that was almost identical but from a guest with a different name, it makes me think that this might be something bad.

So, if you see these kinds of comments, unless you know exactly who sent it, I'd recommend just deleting them and not clicking on the links. Honestly, even if you know who sent it, I'd still be careful just in case they got hacked. If someone wanted to send you a legit link, they would probably do it with some kind of comment beforehand saying what the link actually leads to. This seems to me like they're trying to prey off curiosity and it can lead to some nasty stuff. Since I know some AO3 writers and readers follow me, I thought I'd post about it here. Similarly, if you see a comment like this on someone's fic, maybe don't click on it either. Again, I can't guarantee this is anything bad, since I definitely did not click on the links, but it's better to be safe than sorry. If y'all could reblog this to spread the word, I'd appreciate it.

Anyway, be careful out there guys! I got burned a few too many times as a kid, so I'm extra careful with links and things now, ha.

EDIT: Apparently, these links are indeed malicious. I checked them in an online link checker, and it detected one malicious source from the link in the second message, but 12 malicious sources in the link from the first message. So, it's pretty clearly a virus or phishing scam. Please be aware!
