Conversation Prompt

Conversation Prompt

“Do you believe in soulmates?”

“Oh, yeah. Definitely. Mine is my best friend. Our eyes met across a crowded room and my life was complete. The world is brighter, people are kinder - for the first time I felt like I had a home.”

“I’m trying to be romantic here.”

“Oh, sorry. You’re my other soulmate.”

🤍 Subtle Signs of a Caretaking Dynamic 🤍

Caretaker stepping in front of whumpee instinctively when there's gunfire/a loud noise/etc.

Whumpee looking towards Caretaker instinctively when faced with danger or a difficult question.

Caretaker carrying whumpee's belongings for them or opening doors for them. Generally making tasks easier for whumpee.

Caretaker knows things about whumpee's recovery or medical situation off the top of their head, without even having to think about it.

Or Caretaker gets defensive when asked about whumpee. "Why do you want to know? What do you want with them?"

Whumpee leaning against Caretaker's shoulder when they're next to each other.

Caretaker lightly brushing a hand against whumpee's hand in a gesture of comfort. Or whumpee initiates that, and Caretaker picks up on a hint and holds their hand.

If the relationship is fated or somehow bound, there may be markers of a unique bond, such as tattoos, bite marks, etc.

Their tone of voice changing completely as soon as they start talking to each other. Maybe they're shy with everyone else but joke with each other. Or maybe they act cheerful with everyone else, but turn serious as soon as they can talk to the one other person who knows what's really going on.

Nonverbally checking if whumpee is okay with meaningful glances across a room or "thumbs-up versus thumbs-down" gestures.

Caretaker immediately noticing when something is wrong for whumpee and getting visibly stressed.

Elements of real science I'd love to see in more fictional magic systems

Categories are defined by people, not by nature, and way looser around the edges than everyone thinks. "We like to divide spell-casting into rituals, runic magic, instantaneous spells, and curses or blessings, but the 'curse or blessing' category has more to do with how long a spell LASTS than how it's SET, and the line between ritual and inscribed runes gets really blurry in places..."

Models of 'how this works' that get taught to little kids which are fully debunked later as 'over-simplified and actually totally inaccurate, but a good way to learn, this is better', only to be replaced two years of study after that because, 'actually that was also a lie for the sake of learning, learn this one instead'. "Yes, we teach kids that planes stack in layers and sometimes holes form between them, and I know last year we covered the Humperdink Theory Of Planar Interweaving where those so-called holes are areas of enmeshment with the fibers of multiple planes at once, but today we're finally going to talk about the Planar Mosaic Model."

Frenzies of curiosity each time something unexpected happens, as wizards try to figure out, if this is a divergence from the pattern they THOUGHT they knew, then what is the bigger pattern? IE, "We've seen the Power of Friendship be insufficient to slaying this balrog for years! Why were these particular adventurers finally able to do it now?"

Basically, magic not as an objective force of the universe, but a hodgepodge thing humans made up to try and talk about and interface with the truth of the actual universe.

"Yes, we've been studying the lore and secrets of the universe for a thousand years. Things still just happen sometimes! That's why it's magic!"

It wouldn’t be historically accurate for my story to include BIPOC!

This is an argument often made about European-style fantasy media like Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and Disney’s Frozen. Audiences, often white, assume that due to the majority-white setting, adding any visible number of BIPOC to the story would be unrealistic.

What these critics fail to realize is that BIPOC do in fact live, and have lived, in these settings, and records of BIPOC presence in places assumed to be majority-white have been buried, written out, or not taught due to white supremacist and/or colonial bias in the field of history. There are historical European settings that were far more diverse than is often portrayed. Consider:

The Moorish Empire exerted an extensive influence over life and culture in Southern Europe from Spain from 711 to 1492

The Ottomans were heavily involved in European affairs up until the treaty of Karlowitz in 1699, but still considered a part of Europe even through the 19th century

The sheer size of the Roman Empire ensured the continued movement of people from various backgrounds within the Mediterranean well until the end of the Byzantine Empire.

“Historical accuracy” should not be used as an excuse for media to be exclusively white in its casting. While there are places which are or were predominantly white, there will always be factors like global trade and immigration that bring multiculturalism to their doors.

And even if the presence of a certain demographic is unrealistic for a certain setting? Consider that we’ve accepted far worse inaccuracies in historical fiction in the name of artistic license. Consider that our understanding of human history is, and will always be, incomplete.
