I Saw Something In The News Today That Truly Took My Breath Away. If You Have Been Paying Attention To

I saw something in the news today that truly took my breath away. If you have been paying attention to U.S. politics over the past few days, you’ve most likely seen this woman:

I Saw Something In The News Today That Truly Took My Breath Away. If You Have Been Paying Attention To

This is Bishop Mariann Budde, and on Monday (Trump’s inauguration) she led an interfaith prayer for Trump and the incoming administration. During the service she asked him to have mercy for LGBTQ+ Americans and undocumented immigrants. This was badly received by the Trump administration (as expected).

After seeing headlines about this woman, I read something that I wanted to share. In 1998 a man named Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay. I’m not going to get into the details of his death on this post, but please be warned it is extremely triggering if you do choose to read more on your own. Matthew Shepard’s death caused a lot of change in the U.S. regarding how LGBTQ hate crimes are handled, and laws that were passed to protect LGBTQ+ people.

Now you’re probably wondering what Matthew Shepard has to do with an Episcopal bishop. For years after Matthew Shepard’s murder, his family had held onto his remains, too scared to lay him to rest in fear of his final resting place being vandalized. In 2018, Budde had his remains interred at the National Cathedral, which is also the place where the interfaith prayer for Trump and his administration took place. The impact of this really had an effect on me. Budde could have led a non confrontational prayer service, and chosen not to mention the harm that will come to the people Trump and his administration are going after. Instead she chose to call out hate and fear in front of some of the most powerful people on the planet, and at a place that has such a large historic meaning to the LGBTQ community.

In the next few years there will be many challenges in protecting free speech, standing up against hate, and protecting those in our communities. But I would like to believe that for every Donald Trump and Elon Musk, there are people like Marianne Budde. There are those of us who can’t speak up for themselves, so it’s important for those of us who can to amplify our voices, even if it’s not the ‘popular’ thing to do.

“And he said you should apologize. Will you apologize?

I am not going to apologize for asking for mercy for others.” - Mariann Budde’s response in a Time interview

In light of The Situation happening right now in the USA, I highly recommend retreating from social media as much as possible and immersing in real life to clean out the gunk of social media type activism

Try as best as you can to track down some old retired folks who have been doing the activism thing for decades. And just old retired folks who care about anything, anything at all.

This crap with labeling the generations and talking like "boomers" are this way and "gen Z" is that way, it's silly to the point of being dangerous.

Younger generations in USA kind of reject the whole thing about respecting and valuing your elders but the truth is, all different kinds of cultures have these values and they're right. Elders have more knowledge and understanding than you can ever find written down anywhere.

And they WANT and NEED young people to connect with them. Elders are suffering more from our society of isolation than anybody else. And they are energized and invigorated by having young people to share their knowledge, information, and stories with.

So often I have been in a room of people majority over 65, wondering where all the "politically aware" gen Z are. And the answer is, they're on social media, arguing with strangers and stressing themselves out, while the "boomers" are getting shit done.

Social media isolates young activists from the most experienced and knowledgeable of all. And it's a dangerous trap for people of all ages who feel lonely and afraid. Either radicalizing them into hateful ideology and cult-style groups, or convincing them of apathy and pointlessness.

go outside, find the elders that know everything, get shit done. This is my advice

trope i really like is self-loathing characters desperate for the catharsis of punishment for frankly rather selfish reasons who r also obsessed with repeatedly pressing others into hating them and hurting them as essentially a method of self harm. yes baby continue making it worse for urself and everybody around u instead of doing an actually productive and effective journey of improvement

Still love howling void being Bill's first. Makes the fact he talks about her twice in tbob milleniums and several partners later kind of sad and very hilarious

I've gotta break this down, this demands itemization. She comes up three times total in TBOB and they are:

denying he dated the void, it was totally just a coffee date

a hidden message on the romance page that says "I MISS THE VOID"

hidden away in the deluxe edition, on a page talking about various BS holidays, "I briefly dated knew a howling void" while sharing a holiday he learned from her even though he's not fully convinced it's a real thing, which means she made an impact on him, he thinks unprompted about things she told him, long after they parted ways bits and pieces of his life have been shaped by her

—and good god if you're a fan neck-deep in character analysis that's just enough info to make you rabid.

I headcanon the howling void as one of Bill's... well, not best relationships, because it was pretty shit (100% Bill's fault)—but one of his emotionally deepest relationships. Specifically because it was his first.

Because that means he hadn't yet learned what he's like in relationships (selfish, controlling, manipulative, progressively more emotionally & then physically abusive, and thus doomed to destroy the relationship), so he went into it thinking "this could last forever" instead of "this is a fling that'll last a couple centuries at best before it inevitably self-destructs for reasons completely outside my control"—which means he put up way fewer emotional walls and facades.

He let her get a whole lot closer than most partners because he hadn't yet learned the hard way that letting someone get close hurts when he loses them—and he will lose them. Because he sucks.
