“What are you doing here?” Angela asks, surprised to see Tim.
Furrowing his brows, Tim answers, “I’m here for the TO meeting.”
Angela tilts her head back and groans, passing Nyla a 10-dollar bill.
“She thought you’d give up your position for Metro,” Nyla explains.
“I’d like to, someday, but not today,” Tim replies.
“20 bucks this is his last one,” Angela says to Nyla. “He still has the open invite to Metro and his patience can’t take many more boots.”
Nyla reaches to shake Angela’s hand as Tim rolls his eyes and walks away.
“Let me see his rookie first, then we’ll talk,” Nyla decides. “I’ve got a feeling a lot is going to change around here.”
“Like what?” Angela asks. “Nyla! Like what?”
✯✯✯✯✯
Walking into the Mid-Wilshire station on your first day as a rookie is both nerve-wracking and exciting. You’ve heard stories about boots making it through the academy to fail once they reach this level, but you’re determined. When you were a kid, you were in bad situations more often than any child should be, but kind police officers changed your life, and you’d like to do the same.
Waving to one of your police academy friends, you sit in the bullpen, waiting impatiently to learn which officer behind you will be your training officer. Getting the perfect training officer is up to fate, based on what you’ve heard, and your TO can make or break your career.
“Good morning, boots! I am Watch Commander Wade Grey. You have made it through the police academy, but don’t expect a pat on the back, your work is just beginning. This is the time to prove yourself, to show your TO, me, and this city why you deserve to be a police officer.” He pauses, moving around the podium to add, “If you should be a police officer.”
As you listen intently, striving to remember every word Sergeant Grey says, two detectives stand at the back of the room and evaluate the rookies.
“He’s only got one shot,” Angela mutters.
“If he gets the pretty one in the front, I’m not taking the bet,” Nyla says.
Angela looks up a row, her brows raising when she sees you. “If he ends up with her, we’re starting a station-wide pool and getting rich,” she adds.
“Now, it’s time to be assigned to your judge, jury, and executioner,” Wade says with a smile. “Or, as we call them, TOs. Our former rookie turned TO, Nolan: you’ve got Edward Henderson.
Officer Nolan nods at Henderson, and you remember his story: a late-life rookie who got a golden ticket. Part of you wants to work with him and learn why he decided on law enforcement, but you only nod at Henderson before turning back around.
“Lance Vincent, you are with our newest TO, Eliza Reagan.”
Wade says your name with a smile that seems a bit more genuine than before. “Officer Bradford, last but not least,” he says as he assigns you your new TO.
You look over your shoulder, a small smile on your face as he nods at you. He is undeniably attractive, and you hope it doesn’t cause any problems.
“Oh, he’s a goner,” Nyla whispers under her breath when you smile at Tim.
“Should we tell him?” Angela replies.
“I think we’ll have to.”
✯✯✯✯✯
Something about you bothers Tim. Not in the usual, grumpy-with-a-new-boot way, but he has a sense that you’re different.
“Nice to meet you,” you say, walking to Tim at the back of the bullpen.
He stands, offering a calloused hand to shake.
“I’m not going to pretend this is going to be easy or fun,” he tells you. “Being a rookie is the hardest part of your career, but if you’re a good cop under the uniform, you’ll be fine.”
Nodding, you promise to do your best and express your willingness to learn everything you can from him.
“Good,” he says. “Meet me outside the war room. We’re not wasting any time, understood?”
“Yes, sir,” you answer.
Tim watches you walk away, and when you stop to let someone carrying a large box cross in front of you, Tim realizes that you’re hurting, or were hurting not long ago. The underlying need to help people is something he recognizes.
“She’s pretty,” Angela muses, walking to Tim’s side.
“Though you know that,” Nyla adds, smiling on his other side.
“She’s a boot. No different than the other rookies,” Tim argues, though his gaze is still on your back as you sign for your bags and weapons.
“Sure, she is. Why don’t you go put her through a Tim test?” Angela suggests.
Tim rolls his eyes as he leaves, wondering what hurt you bad enough to make you want to be a cop. He became a cop despite his hurt, but you’re young and bright – and too good for him – so there must be something in you that makes you worthy of this. More worthy (and more beautiful) than any rookie before you.
✯✯✯✯✯
Several officers wish you luck, with one or two warning you about so-called “Tim Tests” while you wait for Tim behind the shop.
“Don’t tell me you have a checklist,” Tim begins, drawing your attention away from the shop tires.
“No, sir,” you answer. “Just being vigilant, I suppose. I’d hate to start my first day with a flat tire.”
Tim nods, asking where the war bags are. You tell him how you checked the contents and loaded them into the trunk, and he appreciates your brief explanation.
“Good work. The easy part is over,” Tim says. He seems to weigh his options before deciding, “You drive. Show me what you’ve got.”
He follows you to the driver’s side door, opening it as he reminds you of standard shop procedures. As Tim closes the door, you wonder if he’s a gentleman or if he followed you because he doesn’t trust you to drive correctly. Either way, you know what you’re doing, and you won’t let the man in the passenger seat distract you… too much.
Driving toward Wilshire Boulevard for patrol, Tim looks out the window.
“Blue Camaro has an expired plate,” you alert.
“Call it in.”
You do so, hitting the sirens as you engage the traffic stop. Tim raises a hand to stop you from getting out.
“Remember your training. Don’t let the situation get away from you.”
His words linger in your mind, and you complete the stop with no problem, issuing a ticket and returning to the shop.
“I’m driving,” Tim alerts you, spreading his hand across the small of your back as he directs you to the sidewalk.
“Did I do something wrong?” you ask when he starts the car.
“No,” he answers bluntly.
You lick your lips nervously, turning your attention to your surroundings. Suddenly, Tim pulls over and hits the brakes.
“I’ve been shot, boot. Where are we?” Tim demands.
Furrowing your brows in surprise at his actions, you answer, “Intersection of 12th and Meadowbrook, west of Redondo. There are several hospitals in a five-mile radius, but only one has a trauma center.”
Tim pulls out wordlessly, continuing his patrol route. Tim doesn't say much else throughout the few hours between his first test and lunch. He lets you point things out, answers your questions about the area and procedures, and glances at you out of the corner of his eye. When he pulls up to a small circle of food trucks where several police officers are waiting, he turns toward you.
“You’re doing well. I’m not neglecting to give you good feedback for any reason other than once you start riding alone, you won’t get it. My role here is to prepare you for your solo career, not hold your hand until you get there.”
“I understand, sir. Thank you for answering my questions,” you reply as you open the door.
Tim’s hand finds your upper back as he leads you to his favorite of the food trucks, a light touch that disappears nearly as quickly as it happened. You thank him quietly for the suggestion before sitting with your fellow rookies.
“Hi, Tim,” Angela says.
“What are you doing here?” he asks, his annoyance breaking through his growing fondness for you.
“Just came to get some food. Your boot seems to be in a good mood.”
“Strange, I thought Tim’s thing was ‘break their spirits in the first hour,’” Nyla adds as she joins Angela.
“You two not have work to do or something?” Tim inquires.
“Something like that. How’s she doing?” Angela tips her chin toward you as she asks.
“She’s got good instincts, knows protocols.”
“But?”
Tim shrugs, turning away before Angela can dig deeper.
“I give it a week,” Nyla announces.
“Before what?”
“He can’t take it anymore.”
✯✯✯✯✯
“Domestic disturbance in your area,” dispatch alerts.
Tim grabs the radio, accepting the call as he hits the sirens and turns into a residential area. You chew the inside of your bottom lip; domestic calls are your least favorite, especially when kids are involved. Unwilling to show discomfort, you put on your best brave cop face and follow Tim to the door.
A young girl with a bloody nose and teary eyes opens it, and you glance at Tim before kneeling and asking her to come outside. She listens without question, her lower lip wobbling as you smile.
“He’s hurting my mom,” she whimpers.
Tim nods at you before tilting his head toward the shop. You direct the girl to stand at the edge of the porch and wait for you as you follow Tim inside.
“LAPD, put your hands up!” Tim yells as he steps into a bedroom.
Your eyes widen when you see the large man towering over the girl’s mother. He smiles as he reaches for something.
“Don’t move unless you want to give me a reason,” Tim says lowly. “Step away.”
The man looks toward the nightstand before taking a deep breath and giving up.
“I got it,” Tim tells you before radioing a code 4.
You wait until Tim has the handcuffs secured to walk outside. The girl runs into your arms, and you pop the shop's trunk, setting her down as you retrieve a small first aid kit. She lets you clean her bloody nose, gripping your wrist when it stings.
“Where’s my mom?” she asks.
“She’s talking to my partner right now, she’ll be out in a few minutes,” you explain.
“Is he nice?”
“The nicest,” you answer.
“Mom!” she yells, letting you set her on the ground before she runs to her mom’s side.
“Get in the shop,” Tim commands as he walks past, his hand brushing your arm as he closes the trunk.
You obey, climbing into the passenger seat and waiting as he talks to the EMTs. When he joins you, he drives to a quiet, empty street before switching off his body cam and gesturing for you to do the same.
“Are you okay?” he asks, his voice softer than you’ve heard.
“Yes, sir.”
“Don’t say what I want to hear. Domestic calls are tough but that wasn’t your first one, was it?”
You shake your head, looking out the windshield instead of at Tim.
“We all have reasons for becoming a cop, and some calls are harder than others. As long as your past doesn’t get in the way and put you in danger, it’s okay to be human,” he continues. “TOs are notoriously hard on you, but we’re also here for you.”
“Thank you,” you whisper.
Tim shrugs, one corner of his lips upturned. “No more sappy stuff, we have work to do.”
“Oh, if you think that was sappy, I’ve got a lot to show you before I graduate to short sleeves.”
The comment catches Tim off guard and makes him feel something he didn’t expect.
✯✯✯✯✯
By the end of the first week, you feel like you know Tim well. His hand spread across your back or shoulder when you’re in front of him, his little reminders that you’re not alone, that you can show emotion when the time allows, and every other little thing he does makes you wonder why there are so many horror stories around his teaching style.
Likewise, Tim thinks he has you down. You ask him questions, ask for his opinions, listen and apply what he says, and send him small smiles when he compliments your work.
But, it only takes a shift to realize that people are multi-faceted, and cops and rookies are no different.
“Good morning,” you greet, passing Tim a small box.
“What is this? A bribe?” he asks.
You smile as you reply, “Nope. Just something I found, and I thought you’d like.”
Tim opens the box, his eyes widening at the 2000 Super Bowl tickets, the Rams’ first win. “I can’t accept these.”
“They were under a bookshelf in my apartment, it’s not like I spent a million dollars on them, Officer Bradford.”
Tucking them into his pocket, Tim opens your door. “Thank you.”
You smile, and Tim thinks your joy is the better gift.
✯✯✯✯✯
During your first call of that day, you show Tim that you don’t just value his opinions.
“Shots fired!” you radio as you duck behind the car.
“Are you hit?” Tim asks.
Shaking your head, you move closer, trusting him to direct you and keep you safe. The men in the house you were called to have automatic weapons, and though you’re a good shot, you’re not a match for their guns alone.
“Backup is on the way, but I need you to do something for me. You trust me?” Tim adds.
“I do.”
“Reach around the back and open the trunk; just far enough to reach the latch. I’ll cover you.”
He stands above you, firing into the shattered window of the house as you slip your arm and back around the end of the shop and open the trunk.
“Good, perfect,” Tim praises as he ducks beside you. His knuckles graze yours as he leans past you. “Can you reach the shotguns?”
Glancing in the window above you, you locate them quickly. “I can.”
“Do it. I got you.”
Once the shotguns are in your hands, you pass one to Tim as you ready your own. Timing your shots, you take out two shooters just as your backup arrives.
“You’re bleeding,” Tim says, his adrenaline dropping as a tactical team takes over.
You look at your arm, just noticing your ripped sleeve and bloody skin. Tim lays his hands on your arm as he turns it toward him.
“I think it was just glass from the windshield,” you say quietly, pointing to the car behind you, riddled with bullet holes and broken glass.
“Either way, we need to get it checked out.”
“Officer Bradford?” you interject. “Thank you. For making sure I trust you.”
“Thanks for trusting me,” he mutters, so soft you can barely hear it.
He taps the Super Bowl tickets in his pocket as he rises to get a paramedic to check on you, and you smile, wondering how bad it would be if you fell in love with your TO.
✯✯✯✯✯
“You’re quieter than usual,” Tim points out. “I need to know that whatever is bothering you won’t impair your ability to work with me.”
“It won’t,” you promise. “Sorry.”
Tim considers pressing, but he trusts you. “I’m here. If you decide you want to talk about it.”
He exits the shop and opens your door before you can reach for the handle.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Did you see that?” Nyla gushes, elbowing Angela.
“Ow. See what?”
Nyla points to Tim, closing your door and laying a hand on your shoulder as he ducks his head to talk to you.
“That’s not a reprimand,” Angela deduces.
When you smile, a tiny upturning of your lips, Nyla laughs.
“Oh, that boy… The door, the touches, listening to her? He’s gone.”
“Not just him,” Angela adds. “She asks him questions, smiles at him, trusts him more than anyone… and the Super Bowl tickets? They’re adorable.”
“Should we do something?”
“Not yet. I think they’re close to realizing.”
✯✯✯✯✯
After your longest, and worst, day yet, you find yourself in a hospital waiting room beside Tim. He hasn't said anything since a speeding driver ran into your side of the shop, though you've apologized countless times (even though there's nothing you could have done).
Tim’s jaw is clenched so tight you’re worried it will snap. You’re sitting close to him, a bandage around your wrist and an ice pack pressed to your cheek.
“Sorry,” you whisper.
“Stop- stop apologizing, it’s not your fault,” Tim sighs.
His arm is on the armrest between you, and you move your hand toward his. When he doesn’t back away, you turn your arm to allow your knuckles to brush against his.
“It’s not your fault,” you tell him kindly. “He ran a red light.”
“And you could’ve been killed,” Tim replies, standing abruptly and walking away.
You slump in your seat, dejected and curious about what you could say to make him stop blaming himself for someone running into you.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Tim and his rookie sitting in a tree,” Nyla sings under her breath.
“I don’t have time for this right now,” Tim replies.
“Right, because you’re too busy being mad that she got hurt. Cops get hurt Tim,” Angela reminds him.
“Not with me,” he begins, pausing to take a deep breath. “Despite what you think, I’m upset that she got hurt, not because I’m in love with her.”
“Whatever you got to hear, buddy,” Nyla replies. “But tell me this. If it was Nolan when he was a boot, would you have felt this bad? Even if I believed you didn’t have feelings for her, which I don’t, you’re different with her and you know it.”
Tim sighs, looking out the door at you. He knows it’s true; despite his constant denial, he does treat you differently because you are different, and you’re like a magnet, incapable of being ignored or forgotten. Finally confessing it to himself, Tim knows that his feelings for you will get one or both of you in trouble unless something changes.
✯✯✯✯✯
“It is time for The Switch,” Wade says as he walks into the bullpen. “The day you ride with a new TO.”
You glance at Tim, who gives you an encouraging nod. He tells you that you’re a great rookie, but he also tells you that you’re pretty sometimes, which doesn’t seem pertinent (or always true, in your eyes). Wade says your name, and you look up.
“You’re with Nolan,” he tells you.
Smiling at Nolan, you cross your fingers under the desk that it’s a good day.
“Henderson,” you call as he stands up, “what’s Nolan like?”
“He’s great. Really understanding and knowledgeable. A little talkative, but fairly easy going. Just stick to protocol and listen to his directions; you’ll be fine.”
“What about Bradford?” Vincent asks you. “Everyone says he’s the toughest. Anything I should be aware of?”
“I don’t think so. He’s quiet sometimes, but he’s great.”
You collect your war bag with the expectation of a good day. You will miss Tim, but learning how another TO teaches and his views can be invaluable. As you slide into the driver’s seat beside Nolan, you realize something: you like Tim as more than your TO. He means more to you than just being your teacher, your mentor, and a trustworthy officer. The thought hits you so suddenly you're not sure where it came from.
With each passing moment, you find yourself remembering something Tim said or wanting to tell him something, but he isn’t there. Nolan is kind and laughs at your muttered comments, but it is nothing like riding with Tim. As you think about all the little things Tim does, everything begins to make sense.
Someone yells your name when you step out of the shop to get lunch. Turning, you’re surprised to see Vincent storming up to you.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he demands.
“Tell you what?”
“That Bradford has ‘Tim Tests’ and nothing pleases him!”
You glance over his shoulder, finding Tim and Nolan talking. Tim glances over at you, and the tension in his shoulders seems to ease until Nolan says something else.
“His Tim Tests aren’t that bad; he’s just teaching you awareness and safety.”
“He wants to end my career,” Vincent exclaims before muttering something about you not understanding as he walks away.
✯✯✯✯✯
“How’s Vincent doing?” Nolan asks.
“That kid has no situational awareness,” Tim answers. “I stopped at a street sign, and he couldn’t figure out where we were.”
“He’s probably scared of you,” Nyla interjects. “And, no, Bradford, I don’t have anywhere else to be.”
“My rookie can tell me where I am, no matter what,” Tim adds.
“Your rookie is very good, I’ll give you that,” Nolan replies. “But Vincent has potential. Besides, your boot has people problems.”
Tim glances over at you, locking eyes with you while Vincent talks to you dramatically.
“So do I, but I’m still a good cop.”
Nyla watches as both you and Tim sigh before abandoning the conversations you’re in. She shakes her head, calculating her winnings if the betting pool goes her way.
✯✯✯✯✯
Walking out of the locker room at the end of the day, you’re surprised to be called into Sergeant Grey’s office. You sit across from him, fiddling with the hem of your shirt to spend your nervous energy.
“You are being assigned to a new TO. Officer Bradford has decided to hand you off to someone better equipped to teach you,” Grey informs. “But you’re not in trouble.”
You still your hands in your lap. “Okay. Effective when?”
“Monday morning. So, rest up.”
As you stand, Grey says your name, smiling as he repeats, “You’re not in trouble. This was Bradford’s decision, nothing to do with you. Well, nothing to do with you as a rookie.”
You purse your lips at his phrasing, and he chuckles before sending you out. Walking through the parking lot, you see Tim’s truck is still there and decide to ask him what happened. Standing by the tailgate, you chew your bottom lip as you wait, nervous that you did something, though Wade assured you differently.
Tim walks up unnoticed, saying your name to get your attention.
“What did I do wrong?” you ask, jumping straight to your questions. “I can fix it; there has to be a way to fix it.”
“You didn’t do anything,” Tim promises. “I just can’t be your TO anymore.”
“Why not?”
Tim shifts his backpack on his shoulder. “It’s not appropriate.”
Your heart drops. Tim knows you have feelings for him, and it makes him uncomfortable; that’s the only explanation. Nodding slowly, you accept your fate.
“And I can’t do this,” Tim adds.
His hands slide onto your jaw, his palms against your cheeks as his fingers settle behind your ears, pulling you into a quick kiss. You only begin to respond when he pulls back.
“You’re the best boot I’ve ever had,” he whispers, brushing his thumbs over the apples of your cheeks.
“I’m not your boot anymore,” you remind him.
“That’s your fault. Those little gifts, and soft smiles, and how well you listen… You make it impossible not to fall for you.”
You laugh, leaning against his hands as you reply, “You do too. How do you think I felt when you called me pretty or touched my back? Then you kept comforting me and inviting me to talk. It was too easy.”
“Go to dinner with me?” he asks.
You nod, smiling against his hands before he moves to touch your back again, opening the passenger door as he helps you in. Tim slips his hand into yours, kissing your knuckles as he keeps you close.
✯✯✯✯✯
When the rest of the rookies leave the station, noticing that your car is still there, they ask each other if anyone has seen you.
“Bradford’s truck is gone,” Nyla notices as she walks out.
“Looks like we won,” Angela cheers.
“Where’s Bradford?” Vincent asks.
“On a date,” Nyla answers. “With his former boot.”
The rookies’ jaws drop, wondering how you managed to pull Mid-Wilshire’s resident grump.
“Don’t expect the same to happen to you,” Angela says as she passes the rookies. “We all worked for this one.”

“See, what I'm hearing is that you convinced some poor college kid into doing slave labour for us by bribing her with a coffee..."
Summary: When Dee meets a potential new hire for the bar, the gang decide to give you an interview. They decide the best way to determine if you’re a good fit at Paddy’s is to play Chardee Macdennis with you.
Warnings/Tags: 18+ References to sex, drugs, alcohol. Other topics commonly found in canon.
You had met Dee at an early morning Pilates class, and were quick to find you were the only two women under 50. You had innocently misread the timetable, whereas Dee had attempted to sneak in and copied your excuse after the instructor asked you both to leave. Not wanting to waste a free morning out or the opportunity to make a new friend in a new city, you invited Dee to get coffee with you.
When Dee mentioned that she worked at a bar her dad, brother, and brother's friends owned in South Philly, your ears pricked up with a mutually beneficial idea. See, you weren't a Pennsylvanian, you had only moved to the state to study short-term at Penn State. As part of the curriculum, you had planned for your thesis to be about local businesses and the psychology of fostering a strong team. Dee jumped at the idea. Almost too enthusiastically in hindsight but she really needed a little extra femininity in the bar.
"She's cool, and she's smart, and we don't have to pay her anything cos she has to do it for college." Dee explained to the gang, telling them about her ‘new friend’ proudly.
Dennis narrowed his eyes as he turned his head ever so slightly, all the while maintaining eye contact with his sister. His mind ruminated on several trains of thought at once, but his main focus was needing to know how old you were. Followed very closely by wondering how attractive you were.
Mac was the first to speak after Dee's several minute long monologue recap about her entire morning meeting you. "See, what I'm hearing is that you convinced some poor college kid into doing slave labour for us by bribing her with a coffee..."
"What? No! No, she's like, in her mid twenties at least. She's doing her masters degree..." Dee explained, putting extra emphasis on the latter detail. "I told her she could come here later tonight to meet everyone."
Dennis posed the question of whether or not the potential new recruit was attractive or not, to which Mac raised that an attractive woman working at the bar would be good for business. They were very clearly forgetting that Dee worked at the bar but none of them thought of Dee that way. She wasn't like a woman woman, let alone an attractive one. Clearing her throat loudly to grab their attention, they all turned towards her with looks of annoyance.
"Can't you see that the men are talking Dee?" Frank said before they turned back to talk amongst themselves. "You know me, I'm on the record for loving the idea of slavery. But we gotta' sus her out for ourselves."
Charlie made a whiny sort of hum as he thought to himself; which he aptly called his ‘thinking sound’ fairly often. "Should we do like, a background check to make sure she's not a psycho?"
"Ooh! Good idea, Charlie. We should stalk her Facebook page..." Mac clicked his fingers at the laptop as the pride he felt over his own idea. Was it not genius to search you online and see for themselves? To see if Dee was fucking with them over by hiring an ugly chick? He sure thought it was genius.
Reluctantly, Dee typed in your name slowly before Mac quickly pressed the enter button to bring up the results. “Is she the top one?” He asked excitedly, and after sighing slowly, Dee nodded.
"She's hired." Dennis said bluntly before leaning over the bar. "And if you'll excuse me, I have some background checks of my own to do." Then, without further explanation, took the laptop from the group and walked to the back office alone.

જ⁀➴ Angel x Virgin Male Reader - Someone nice, somewhere safe*
*same story, just your bits and bobbles are changed
You let it slip to the group you were a virgin, and instead of laughing, Angel grabs you before bed to offer a friendly hand.
.<Warnings/Promises: Angel Dust x Virgin Female!Reader, smut, fingering, lubed to the gods, Angel uses four arms, Valentino is a blind bag of smashed assholes, creampie, oral, the gentlest sex I’ve ever written (probably), an alarming towel>
listen here virgins, if I could craft a perfect first time for you, this is it. Minus the lack of condoms because—it’s hell? Sex workers are tested bi-weekly?? This is still a fantasy??? Just if anything, please take from this the importance of a safe and trusting environment at all times 🙏
minor dni (shoo! get outta here! Go on, git! 🧹)
You thought everyone would laugh when you said you were a virgin. The group awe’d and said it was cute, which was definitely better than the response you’d gotten in the overworld. But when you said you’d never actually orgasmed before, everyone just looked… sad? The conversation was quickly derailed by Angel launching into a list of wildest orgasm faces he’s seen, Charlie leaving the room entirely.
Continuing with the evening’s theme of surprise, you hadn’t expected Angel to catch up to you when everyone was filing off to bed. His hand gently reached for your wrist, “Hey ya got a sec?”
For Angel, the epitome of smiling through the pain, you’d give him the remainder of your time in hell if he just asked. Every second, his.“Always!”
“So uh”, he rubbed the back of his neck, “about bein’ a virgin and all that.” Your stomach dropped, was the famous porn star about to embarrass you into a second death?“I think it’s real important that like— knowin’ yourself, and what makes you feel good is like super healthy. I dunno if you are interested in that kinda stuff but,” he was wildly moving his hands round, nervously stumbling over his words, “I’d be happy to help ya out.”
All of the blood rushed to your face.
“Oh fuck!” Angel grabbed your head and tipped it forward, “I would have accepted a simple no, jesus!” With one hand pinching your nose, he led you into his room just down the hall.
What— what was happening, exactly? At all? In general? With your entire existence?
He kicked the door closed behind him and grabbed a handful of tissues, “Keep your head forward. Everyone who says tilt it back is an idiot.”
His hand was red when he drew it from your face, using his other hand to now hold tissues between his fingers as he pinched your nose shut.
“Is- is my nose bleeding??” Your voice cracked.
“Does that happen often?”
“Never.”
“Well I got to help you with at least one first, right?” Angel laughed, moving his hands away as you took over the task.
Oh, right. The offer. You glanced around the room, small but lived-in. Everything was pink and purple and soft.
“Angel, do you think because you’re a sex worker, you have to help me?” The room fell silent. Angel completely still beside you. You would love someone you could trust to take your virginity, but you would never want to use Angel like so many other people did on a daily basis.
“Ya know— a lot of people get real confused about this.” He sighed, chest heavy with the many misconceptions others had, “What I do for work, what I gotta do to get through the day, has nothin’ to do with who I am as a person.” You turned to look at him, “Why should I limit my experiences because of what other people have done to me?” The words hit you like a truck. You had unintentionally boxed him into his job, in turn into his trauma, summing him up as a warm body and incapable of any depth past that. Just a sex worker.
“No, no I didn’t mean anything like that. I just, I don’t want to ever,” you grabbed two of his hands, “ever take advantage of your kindness.” You squeezed, “or any part of you.”
His frown turned up, “We’re dead, yea, but you still exist. If you want to, you should enjoy every part of your afterlife. And I’d hate you to meet some asshole who’s too rough or doesn’t get ya warmed up first. A bad first time can be really traumatizin’.”
You nodded without actually thinking. Your brain wasn’t really processing meaning, his words were just soft and kind and your nose still stuffed full of tissue.
“Do you wanna?”
You nodded more vigorously, “Did my nose start bleeding again?”
Angel took the tissue away, giving a second to see, “Nope.”
Taking a deep breath, you said, “Okay. Yeah, I want that. Someone nice, somewhere safe.”
“It ain’t quite nice but-,” Angel looked around his room.
“It’s perfect, Angel.”
“Aw fuck, I should clean up,” he hurriedly carried trash from his nightstand, flattening out the comforter and adjusting his pillows. He placed fat nuggets on the floor with a little pat on the head.
Finally, he stood in front of you, two hands on his hips, two gesturing to you.
“Alright baby! Let’s pop some cherries! Undress~” he elongated the word, shimmying his hips a little, “-to your comfort level.” He began to unbutton his blazer, “Bare minimum, take off your pants and underwear, please and thank you. Though I have fucked through underwear…” He was momentarily lost in a memory.
You hadn’t anticipated getting naked in front of a friend tonight. But Angel so effortlessly shed his clothes, peeling off his gloves. Pulling off your pants, you paused.
“Is it weird if I keep my shirt on? Like— do you know who Winnie the Pooh is?”
“Nothin’ weird about bein’ comfortable, pookie.” He pinched your cheek, “I’d offer a modesty blanket but I kinda need to see what I’m doing.” His eyes flitted to the left, “No, wanna. I wanna see.” Angel’s laugh relaxed you, the idea of anyone wanting to see you made you feel a little less—-naked. Still, your hands seemed frozen on your underwear’s edge.
With a hum, he disappeared into the bathroom and returned with a towel. “Go on, lie down. I’ll help ya relax. This is already feeling too medical-like.”
Were you going to need a towel? Were you going to need a towel?? Were you going to need a towel!?
You sat back on his bed, and when he crawled up to meet you, all legs and arms and Angel Dust, you buried your face in your hands.
“Oh hey—,” his voice was so soft, lacking its usual sass, “Wanna just, cuddle and watch stupid shit on my phone?” You groaned, face sinking further down. This would be easier if he wasn’t so sweet. You could at least take a backseat, then.
You shook your head, and felt his hand on your ankle. It snaked up your calf, slipped down your knee and thigh, finding the waistband of your underwear. When you looked up from your hiding place, Angel was a foot from your face. His features lit only by the purple neon signs hanging beside his bed and near the door. He lifted his brows, a question he didn’t need to vocalize. You sank back into the purple and pink pillows, different sizes, different textures, gently enveloping you.
With two hands now, he slide off your underwear. You might die, again. Your heart would give out any second, incapable of handling the moment. You were manually breathing.
He lifted your hips with two hands, a third sliding the towel beneath you before setting you back down.
“Do ya-,” he was rummaging now inside the nightstand drawer, “not play with yourself? Ever?”
“Not really. Not like, there.”
“Whaddya do with all your free time?” His short but enthusiastic laughter forced a smile to your cheeks. Angel slid the drawer shut and came to rest in front of your tightly shut thighs and knees. You heard a cap pop, and found the courage to sit up and see what he was doing.
“What?” He squeezed a clear, thick lubricant onto his right hand, “Nerves can make holes dry like nothin’ else. No fun for no one, trust me. Could start a fuckin’ fire—- and spit ain’t lube!” Angel said it like he spoke from a personal experience.
Ah, the towel. That made sense now.
“Should I do something?”
“Just lie back, baby~,” he opened your knees and followed your face as you settled back down, “Do you like kissin’?”
You’d kiss a trashcan if Angel said it got him hot, so, “Yeah.”
“Good,” One hand touched your cheek, sliding to your chin as he brought your lips to his. You thought you’d melt, his hands so soft on you, lips confident and sure. He used his thumb on your chin to pull down your bottom lip and ask you for entrance. When you opened up to him, his tongue slid into yours as his sticky wet hand finally came into contact between your legs. Two fingers rubbing the lube up and a down your pussy.
You nearly inhaled him with your shock, he giggled into it, “You’re so cute.” You twitched under his hand, “Ooh, and reactive! Daddy likes.”
Stop. Stop talking. I’m going to black out.
His mouth returned to yours, tongue over your tongue, as his fingers just massaged your entrance. No attempt at entering, no prodding, just gentle up and down motions. Slowly, your felt your skin heating beneath his hand, the lubricant somewhat melting with your warmth.
At work, Angel was never the lead. Never the top, and never afforded time to ease anyone open. He had no issues with sleeping with women, it was just usually for money or a shoot. Not his preferred flavor, but he could still get it up. Watching you sigh and twitch under him felt like a treat. Such a sweet response to what so many people made unnecessarily dirty at work. He wasn’t shocked to find his cock twitching, swelling as your breathing hitched with every stroke of his hand. When was the last time he could just… slow down? Be the one in control? Not control like Val, control like—- can I get you a pillow? Is the pacing good? Let’s soften these lights. Hold my hand, sweetheart.
His head felt a little dizzy. His middle finger pressed now, and with a slow but constant motion entered you. ‘Uncomfortable’ was the best word. Your body tensed around him, but he gently pressed passed your virgin walls. He hummed, “First one down! Atleast,” he paused, “two more to go.”
“Atleast??” You shook your head.
“It’s sex math, trust the professional in the room.” He withdrew the finger and slid it back in, starting a slow pace of long drags from knuckle to fingertip.
It didn’t hurt, to his credit. The excitement of having Angel touching you so intimately made the finger easier to relax into. Angel must have noticed, his finger leaving you. He popped the top again of his lube and pressed in two fingers. This was harder. You whined, his fingertips pushing past the tight entrance of your cunt and settling into the wet warmth behind.
Lying on your back, you stared at the now upside-down photos behind his bed. He looked so happy. Could you join that wall? Was this wall worthy?
“You still good?” He leaned over you, fingers moving.
You nodded, “Can I have another kiss?”
Ah, you might as well have punched him in the chest. “Of course, darlin’~ Ask and you shall receive.” You liked kissing, genuinely, but were always scared you’d kiss someone too long and end up in an awkward situation having to explain you weren’t wanting sex. But that fear was all gone, you’d broken the code. Get naked first, then kiss.
You smiled into his mouth, and he smiled back, “Whatcha thinkin’ about?”
“I like kissing you.” You leaned up, pressing your lips to his chin. His fingers quickened, and you moaned without warning. You felt your self grip his finger, nervousness slinking away and finally letting you feel aroused.
“Ooh, now we’re gettin’ somewhere,” he leaned back, repeating the same steps and trying to press a third finger into you. His abundance of hands were a blessing, one at your entrance, one on your knee to keep your shaking legs open, and two roaming down the sides of your body. When three fingers finally entered, you could feel the burning stretch of your skin around them. He pushed in, and the skin followed. He pulled out, your sensitive hole pulling too. The hand on your knee came to your crotch, his palm pressing lightly down on your clit. You glanced up to him, his eyes focused as he watched his fingers slowly drag in and out of you. It burned still, but just past that burning was a slippery sensation that made your lap warm with the rush of blood.
He let his fingers sink in entirely, before bending and feeling inside you. Your knee jumped when he hit something.
“Bingo! Say hello to your g-spot.” He beamed down at you, gold tooth shining, “Not everyone needs it to cum but oooh boooy does it maximize pleasure,” it sounded so pornographic when he said it.
You weakly copied, “B-bingo.”
“Three fingers means I can do this now~” he replaced his palm with his fingers, sticky with lube. His long digits were fast and practiced as he rubbed your clit. “Sex math. Dont need your virgin pussy locking up on me.” He said quietly to himself, fingers in and out of you picking up speed. Your head was pressing into the pillows as your neck strained, you’d never masturbated while someone, something, penetrated you. Every stroke of his fingers made your body spasm, the feeling of something hard and unforgiving pushing back against your quivering walls made a pleasure you couldn’t describe.
“Feelin’ good yet?” The way he said it, he knew damn well how you were feeling.
You whimpered into one of the pillows, “Yeah, it’s starting to feel good.” A weak nod.
Angel’s grin bordered on wicked, hand slowing. He leaned down and placed a kiss on your clit. Then another. His tongue flattened against his bottom lip as he dragged it over your sensitive bud of nerves.
You moaned, a half spoken-half cried, “Oh fuck, Angel-.” Hips bucking up, his fingers kept their place and followed. You humped up against his tongue, ground down into his fingers; up, down. Soft tongue, rigid fingers.
“Like that? Watch this,” He cupped his mouth over your clit and began strumming it with his tongue. Fat and flat, then thin and sharp. His fingers slowed, now just bending to hit your soft g-spot again and again.
One hand held tightly to the pillow, the other coming to Angel’s hair. Your body kept jumping away from overstimulation but you fought against it every time and tried to grind against his face.
He lifted his mouth off you with a deliberate pop, “Feelin’ good?” You nodded, eyes closed. “Ready for the real thing?”
“Yeah. I want to feel more, Angel.” It came out as more of a whine than you meant.
His hand came to his erection, red and leaking. Stroking himself, he returned to massaging at your entrance, fingers dipping in then out.
“You comfortable with getting on your knees? This position ain’t so conducive for what I’m tryin’ to do.”
Somehow, ass up sounded better than face to face, “You’re the expert.” You rolled onto your stomach, hips up, face resting into the sea of pillows. You paused, lifted off your now sweaty shirt, and got back into position.
“Sexpert, but thank you!” The lid popped open again, cold and viscous lube being dripped directly onto pussy, “Finally some recognition around here.” He coated himself with what was still on his hands, and raised your hips to line himself up.
“Deep breaths, okay?” He leaned over your back, kisses falling down your skin. Two hands held your hips, one guided himself into you. You tensed when his head began to push in, “Relaaax, just like the fingers.”
A muffled, “okay” from your place in the pile. Your heart was suddenly racing, the tight coil of pleasure his mouth summoned now gone. He wiped his dick up and down your folds, swiping past your entrance. Lining up, he pushed in, getting his head firmly sunk into you.
“Breath, baby,” he moaned into your shoulder. You took a deep breath in, your body tight still. But, it didn’t hurt like you’d thought. It burned, but there was no sting, no tearing. Angel’s hands ran up and down your sides, along you ass and thighs. He gently touched everywhere he could reach, until he felt you soften, “Ready to keep going?”
“Yes please”, you turned your head to look at him.
He pulled out slightly to collect more lube on his shaft, before slowly sinking into you until he bottomed out.
You were gasping, your brain misfiring. You couldn’t feel anything but him, your body just a formless thought with Angel’s warm, solid cock reaching deeper into than you thought possible. One roaming hand reached for your shoulder, “Can I move?”
“Slow,” your hand searched for a loose fold of comforter to grip, but it was soon encased and intertwined by one of his.
He pulled out, and slowly thrust back in. A saccharine moan fell from his mouth, and it made you whimper.
You were so soft around him, yet gripping him so snuggly he felt like he was melting into your walls. His breath was unsteady, “You feel so good on my cock, baby.” A burning blush took over your face, a rush of pleasure electrifying your clit.
“How ya doin’?” Angel sounded nervous, timid.
You had to collect saliva to get any words out, mouth running dry from panting, “S’good.” You tried again, “So good.” Your fingers tightened around his.
He adjusted his hips, watching you closely. When your eyes closed and your hand nearly broke his, he grinned down, “Bingo~,” his speed began to pick up.
“Right there,” you whimpered, “please don’t stop, right there Angel.” You dragged out the last syllable of his name. You could feel a pressure building in your lower stomach.
Angel took languid thrusts out to the tip and pushing back past your still resisting entrance. Every time he pulled out and slipped in felt better than before. The sensations of him opening you around his cock again and again had your stomach and thighs tensing. You brought your hand up to press at your clit, finger frantically moving. You felt something building, you were desperate to reach its climax.
Angel’s hand came down and pushed yours aside, his fingers strong and not shaking with your impending orgasm.
“Almost- Angel pleeeease! Don’t stop- keep—” You squeezed his hand tighter, his thrusts becoming faster and shallower. His repeated pressing of your g-spot pushed you over the edge, hand slowing only slightly.
"You can do it, baby. Come on. Almost there~" His words fell apart in his mouth, his own moans getting louder, your cunt tightening in spasms as your first orgasm tore through you. Your body was so inviting, warm walls sucking his head deeper. He rarely got to feel this sensation, barely ever chosen as the one doing the fucking, let alone fucking a woman. His head rested against your back, hands running along the curve of your hips as he melted into your sweet heat.
He picked up speed, only drawing out an inch or so now with each thrust. The lube made a pop and squelch every time his skin pulled from yours, the sound making his legs weak.
“Where can I cum?” His breath was raspy, messy with the pleasure of your soft insides rubbing along his shaft. You gripped the blanket, orgasm still rolling from the feeling of Angel chasing his release with your body. You could hear the strain in his voice, “Gonna need an answer real fast, babe.” You hid your face in the pillow mountain again, embarrassed to answer.
“Inside,” you tried to say it loudly enough for him to hear.
He whimpered a, “Fuuuuck” down your spine, “Such a dirty little virgin.” His hips stuttered before he sunk into you with such force your legs gave out. Your body came down flush onto the bed. Angel was pressed into you, chest against your back as his breathing calmed. You could feel his heart through your ribs, his chest fluff silky on your skin. Your body was warm, his hot cum filling you.
Small, lazy kisses on your back, then up your neck, he leaned to kiss your cheek. He slid out of you delicately, but you didn’t move. His weight left the bed, then returned as a warm, wet cloth wiped you clean. After a couple of minutes of gentle cleaning, you felt the throw blanket cover your back. Angel plopped down on his back beside you, pulling the blanket over his legs and unlocking his phone, “Wanna see this fuckin’ hilarious video of my boss runnin’ into a glass wall?”
You chuckled, “More than anything.” He side eyed you, “Well, not anything.”
“Right answer, toots,” One of his hands came down and settled on your hair, he leaned in to your head and as you watched Valentino collide head first into a wall, he said softly, “Let me know if you need anything. I got a bitchin’ tub in there.”
You hummed, reaching a shakey hand up and pressing ‘replay’ on his phone. Angel’s laughter echoed off the walls, and you decided you had no plans on leaving bed anytime soon.

Summary: Tim sees a woman in a cemetery after dark and can't stop thinking about you. When he calls for the M.E. and you arrive, he gets a chance to find out more about you.
Warnings: spoilers for 5x22, r is an ME and performs an autopsy, mentions of past judgement and insults, fluff, Tim gets kinda flirty even while there's a dead body between them?
Word Count: 2.5k+ words
A/N: The request said shy reader, but she's pretty open with Tim so I didn't include it in the pairing dynamic. R is very professional with the other characters, though, so that could be considered shy, I think. And, as always, ignore the Chenford gif🤭

“Kojo, c’mon,” Tim urges as Kojo tugs the leash away from Tim.
Kojo has been taking his time on this walk, more of a stroll to sniff everything than a walk, but Tim is ready to get home. When Kojo returns to Tim’s side and begins trotting again, Tim rewards him with a whispered compliment: “There’s the best boy.”
As they near a cemetery, however, a cat meows inside the open gate, causing Kojo to stop again. Tim shakes his head but watches Kojo as his ears perk, and he looks into the narrow gate opening.
“No, Bazinga,” someone says from inside the fence. The cat meows again, and this time the voice - pretty voice, Tim’s mind corrects – laughs. “How are you going to do a séance if you can’t talk, Bazinga?”
Tim and Kojo step to the inside edge of the sidewalk for a better view. Tim should know better than to let his guard down here, but when he realized that the creepy cemetery cat had supervision, he needed to know more. Standing at the fence, he can see a gray blanket spread across a small clearing. You’re sitting on the blanket with a large book open across your lap. A black cat, Bazinga, presumably, roams around you before jumping onto your shoulder.
Tim can’t help but be intrigued by you. He can tell you're young in the dim light of a nearby streetlight. While he’s simultaneously drawn to you and put off by your odd choice about where you relax, Tim lets his logic win and snaps for Kojo to heel beside him. With one final glance at you, Tim leaves you in the dark but remembers your voice long after you ask your cat, “What do you think about the black cat stereotype and how well you fit into it?”
When Tim wakes the following morning, his first thought is you. Part of him wonders if he imagined you, a young woman dressed in black reading in a cemetery in the middle of the night, yet he can’t get you off his mind even as he rises and gets ready for work. Now that overtime has been approved, he has to focus on catching the masked individuals who attacked Aaron and Celina just hours after he saw you.
Once he hears Aaron and Celina’s statuses, it’s easier to forget you and your cat. When they find Roy Gracco and prepare to enter his house, Tim doesn’t even remember his previous cemetery-side walk.
Tim leads the alpha team into Gracco’s home, prepared for anything, but is surprised to find the house clear and cold.
“Drop the gun! Drop it!” he demands as he rounds a corner.
“I think he’s dead,” Nolan calls.
Tim approaches him slowly and confirms that Gracco is dead, 10-5-5.
“It’s a trap,” Nolan realizes aloud.
“Abort! Abort! Abort!” Tim yells. As he exits Gracco’s house, he radios, “Control, I need the bomb squad to the target house for a full sweep. Send the M.E. and TID out here, standing by for a priority search once the house is clear.”
“Yep, got it,” you reply to the police dispatcher.
Your work phone buzzes with a message containing the address where you’re needed. The van is prepped and ready to go, so you only grab your phone, keys, and seal-wrapped black coveralls. When you arrive at the house, dozens of police officers, crime scene investigators, and city officials are waiting.
“Sergeant Grey?” you ask as you approach him. “Has the house been cleared?”
“Almost. Bomb squad’s doing a final walk-through,” he answers. “The officers who found the body are inside and ready to assist you.”
“Dispatch said the air had been cranked down to delay decomp. Do you know if anyone touched the thermostat?”
“No. Sergeant Bradford made sure the house stayed in the same condition as how they found it.”
“Perfect.”
“All clear,” one of the bomb squad members calls as he exits. “Your people are free to enter.”
“Hold up,” Grey calls to TID. “Let the M.E. get what she needs first.”
“Thank you,” you call over your shoulder as you approach the front door.
“Hi, I’m Officer Chen,” an officer greets you as you enter. “Bradford, M.E.’s here.”
“Sergeant Bradford, I hear you preserved the scene and the body. Thanks,” you tell him as you set your bag down.
Tim doesn’t reply, too intrigued that you, a woman who hangs out in cemeteries with her black cat, is the M.E. That and your age, to be more precise.
“What’s the temperature in here?” you ask, looking up at him.
“Fifty-eight,” he answers quickly, shaking himself out of his thoughts and reminding himself not to stare.
“Fifty-eight,” you murmur as you scribble something on your paper. “Then I’m putting time of death between 1 and 2 a.m.”
“Before Aaron and Celina were ambushed,” Lucy says.
“How can you limit it to an hour?” Tim asks. Not because he’s overly interested in your method but because everything you say and do interests him. He wants to hear you talk again. To him, preferably.
“The air temperature and confinement slowed decomp but also affected the blood coagulation. Because of that, and knowing the average maintained temperature since death, I can calculate it with a bit more accuracy,” you explain.
Tim nods and looks at Lucy, who seems to know why he took a sudden interest in forensic science. He has a dozen more questions he’d like to ask you, very few of which are about the case, but you frighten Tim Bradford just enough that he falls silent to let you work.
“You’re not supposed to be here,” you say suddenly.
“Is everything okay?” Tim asks.
“Yeah, just this little guy.” You straighten and extend your hand to show Tim a moderately large spider. “There’s a web in that windowsill, he must have been confused by the temperature drop.”
You cup your hand as you walk toward the window and gently place the spider back on its web. Tim watches every little move you make, trying not to be convinced that you were in a cemetery and are still dressed in black merely because you’re creepy.
“So, based on positioning, lividity, and blood coagulation around the wound in his hand, I’m confident that my estimate of 1 to 2 a.m. today is accurate. More, I’d say that he was unconscious when both the bullets and the knife entered his body. There’s no sign of jerking or resisting, and the stiffness in his spine suggests that he’s been positioned like this for closer to a day.”
“A day?” Tim repeats. “How could he be in one position for nearly ten hours before being shot and stabbed?”
“Was he alive when he was stabbed?” Lucy inquires.
“Yes,” you answer her. “He didn’t react in any way to that pain and the lack of naturally dried blood around the wound, so he was likely already in a state of statis. His heart rate was likely low, the temperature was impeding the healing process, and, as I’m sure you know, bullet wounds don’t close on their own.”
“Then why lead us here?” Tim wonders.
“This is related to the cops that were attacked this morning?” you ask. “I heard about the riddle.”
“Is there anything else you can tell us?” Tim asks.
“I don’t think you’ll find much in this house other than him.”
“I agree.”
“If Gracco is a patsy,” Lucy interjects, “then we should be asking why him?”
“He’s a felon with a history at Mid-Wilshire,” Grey answers as he walks in.
“Sure, but there are hundreds of guys like that. So, why Gracco? Did they pull his name out of a database or is there some kind of connection?”
“You think it’s personal?” Tim asks.
“Look, if I was gonna go to the extreme of targeting police officers, why not take out some of my enemies along the way?”
“That’s gotta count as a goth point,” you murmur.
“Costs us nothing to run with that,” Grey points out. “Get back to the station, check Gracco’s known associates, family, coworkers, anyone he did time with that might hold a grudge. Run them against people that we arrested. And say a prayer while you’re at it.”
“Actually, Grey, can I escort the M.E.?” Tim asks.
You look up from your spot on the floor, and Tim looks away quickly because he suddenly thinks that in that position, you look like a cat.
“Do that,” Grey agrees. “We don’t know what we’re dealing with. Chen, Nolan and Harper are at the station and ready to assist you.”
“Yes, sir,” Lucy replies as she exits.
“Why do I need an escort?” you ask once you’re alone with Tim.
“Because we don’t know what we’re up against and I don’t want to find out the hard way that we’re closer than we think,” he answers.
You nod as you stand, then remind Tim that you have to prepare the body to take back to the morgue. He nods and steps aside, hands clasped, happy to watch you.
“Got it,” Tim says into his phone. “Pine’s got Metro mobilized; do you need me to come back?”
You pull your gloves on as Tim ends his call. He steps toward you and says, “I’m clear to stay with you.”
“Why?” you ask.
“All of our bases are covered. So, if you find something, we need to know.”
You shrug as you concede. It’s not that you don’t want Tim with you; you are confused about why a decorated Metro Sergeant would want to keep you company while you perform an autopsy.
“If you want a mask or anything, they’re in the black case behind you,” you tell him.
“Of course it’s black,” Tim muses.
“Meaning?” you inquire as you mark your incision points.
When you look toward him, Tim gestures to your outfit. You certainly don’t dress like other medical examiners. Or act like them, for that matter.
“What do you have against black?” you tease. “Or are you just jealous of the Converse?”
Tim smiles as he tips his head and replies, “I would rock some studded black Converse, right?”
“Totally. I’ll hook you up with my shoe guy. He might want to see you in the heeled version first, though.”
“So, why’d you become a medical examiner?” Tim asks as you begin the first cut in Gracco’s chest.
“What do you think?”
“Love for science?” Tim guesses.
You lift the scalpel and narrow your eyes at Tim. “Most people just assume I’d like to dig around in dead people.”
“Why? Because you wear black and pick up spiders?”
“Amongst other things.”
“What other things?”
You shake your head and argue, “You have to tell me something about you first.”
“I like the Dodgers.”
“Wow,” you drawl. “Mark me as shocked and surprised.”
“I’m a cop, there isn’t much time to do things worth telling.”
“Fine, I’ll go first but you better have something when I’m done.”
“Yeah, of course. Just, one more thing. How old are you?”
“Twenty-seven. Don’t you dare say oh, you look older, or wow, you must be smart, I really can’t take hearing that again.”
“I didn’t think you must be smart. You clearly are,” Tim replies.
“Good answer. You still want to know about me?”
Tim nods, and you tip your chin down to continue the autopsy as you speak.
“So, you can tell that I like black and spiders… I feel most alive in the fall, Halloween is my favorite day of the year. And cats! They’re much better than spiders because you can watch horror movies and Beetlejuice with them, and birds bring out their violent sides. But cats will also read witch books with you and listen to music, hang out in cemeteries. All the stuff that gets you labeled a ‘creepy weirdo’ is more fun with a cat.”
“Has someone called you a creepy weirdo?” Tim questions.
“More times than I can count. But I have another list that’s longer.”
“A list of what?”
“The coolest tattoos I’ve ever seen.”
Tim hesitates before he asks, “On dead people?”
“Some,” you admit honestly. “Most of them are on live people, though. They’re not as cool when the skin underneath isn’t moving or filled with blood.”
“Interesting.”
“Is this where you call me a creepy weirdo?” Tim shakes his head, and you add, “I guess I’ve just always felt drawn to stuff like that, and it makes me happy, so why should I care what people say about that?”
Tim leans against a table across the morgue from you as you continue to work. He asks a few questions as you work, but the autopsy is as simple as expected. Gracco was killed. There’s no additional evidence about who killed him or why, and his body is relatively clean and well-preserved.
“Sorry I couldn’t be more help,” you tell Tim as you discard your gloves. “If it was a full moon I may have been more help.”
“Because you like full moons, I assume.”
“It was actually a weak werewolf joke, but yes, I do.”
“Does Bazinga?”
You freeze beside Tim before you look up at him to ask, “How do you know my cat’s name?”
“You said it,” Tim answers.
“No, I didn’t.”
“Not today, uh… I saw you in a cemetery a few nights ago.”
“I knew there was someone out there! Bazinga thought it was a ghost.”
Tim nods, unsure of how to keep the conversation going. You both want to keep talking, but there’s something Tim can’t ask, and you aren’t sure you can answer. So, you trace the shape of a crescent moon on your wrist to encourage yourself.
“Will you go out with me?” you ask quickly.
Tim opens his mouth to answer, but you add, “You don’t have to! If I’m misreading this or you’re just being nice and really do think I’m crazy, I understand.”
“I’d love to,” Tim answers when you fall quiet. “Maybe Kojo and I could join your next cemetery picnic.”
“You don’t think that’s creepy?”
“Really creepy,” Tim answers dramatically. “But you like it, so I’d like to see why.”
“What’s your shoe size? I’ll bring you some black Converse.”
“With studs?”
“Wouldn’t you be the stud?”
Tim laughs as he follows you into your office, but his phone rings with an update from Sergeant Grey and he quickly exchanges numbers with you before he leaves. Later, you remember that you never asked who Kojo was, and the picture Tim texts in return to your question makes you smile in your lonely office.
“How nervous are you?” you ask as Tim and Kojo meet you outside the cemetery.
“Probably not as much as I should be,” Tim answers with a smile. “Just don’t tell me we’re eating with someone, uh, someone in there.”
“No, of course not.” You open the gate and joke, “We’ll ease into that.”
“Where’s Bazinga?”
“Bazinga is a cat. In the picnic basket.”
You help Tim spread your favorite blanket on the grass and join him and Kojo as you set the food out. Tim watches you and realizes you’ve never been creepy, scary, or a weirdo. You’re special and if this spot beside you has been left open for him by people underestimating or judging you, he’ll make sure you know how special you are.
A bit of 18 and up, y’all.
“How do I keep winding up in your bed?”
You felt the mattress shift beneath you and then Walt’s smile pressing into the back of your shoulder, only one of your flimsy nighties in between your skin and his. One of his legs was tucked between yours and his hips were flush against you.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2
Chapter 3: The Swordsman
It was a quiet night aboard the Sunny. After dinner, you played cards with Usopp and Chopper for an hour before you started yawning. As the chatter of your crewmates and activity aboard the ship died down, you felt your body begin to notice the aches of your long day at sea. You excuse yourself from the game and made your way down to your room. With each dragging step towards your door, you felt your legs getting heavier and heavier. You reach your room and slump into it to push it open.
The sight of your bed makes your mouth water almost, so fluffy and cozy and waiting for you to swan dive into it. However, you look down at your grungy clothes and realize you haven’t showered or bathed yet today. Normally you would say skip it and do it in the morning, but your skin was extra salty and grimy. *a bath DOES sound nice…* You thought to yourself.
So, you stripped yourself of your sea-worn clothing and grabbed a fresh towel from your closet. You wrap the towel around your torso and head towards the bathroom for a quick soak. Popping into the bathroom a few doors down from your own, you walk over to the large tub to sit down on the edge and turn on the hot water. After putting in the plug and leaving it to fill, you moved from the tub to the bath cabinet, searching for something to make your relaxing bath just a bit more indulgent. You found some scented bath bubbles and brought them over to the tub and dumped a bunch in the running water.
You waited for the tub to fill in by sitting on the edge of the tub and rubbing your sore feet. Once the tub was filled to the brim with hot, steaming water and giant, white fluffy bubbles, you unwrapped the towel from your body and folded it nicely to place next to the tub impending your departure from the water. You stepped gingerly into the tub and began lowering your aching body into the warm embrace of the bubbles. You audibly moaned as you finally seated yourself fully in the tub.
You rest your head back onto the edge of the bathtub and let out a long, relaxed sigh. You were so glad you didn’t wait until tomorrow to bathe, this felt so good-
*WHAM*
The door to the bathroom slams open. You shriek on instinct while sitting up on your knees in the tub, sloshing a large amount of water and bubbles over the edge in the process.
“Ah!” You put your hands up in defense instinctively.
“AAAH!” A very confused, slightly tipsy swordsman had burst into the bathroom without knocking.
“Zoro what the FUCK!” You shouted at him. He looked around the room briefly to register where he was and then his eyes zoned in on your naked, wet chest.
“Hello?” You ask when he doesn’t respond, still staring at your breasts. His eyes finally snap up to meet yours and he takes a step backwards.
“I—y/n I— I thought this was my room!” Zoro stutters out, eyes darting from your body to your face, trying to keep his composure.
“Why the FUCK would this be your room? You LIVE on this ship, HOW does this keep happening? Also WHY do you open doors like that?!” You weren’t upset, just still startled by his sudden, loud intrusion.
As a man who isn’t easily criticized, Zoro immediately snapped out of his daze and and started yelling back at you.
“Oh it’s MY fault that YOU didn’t lock the bathroom door?! Also, as a fighter it is important to ALWAYS SLAM DOORS OPEN just in care there’s an enemy behind them! I can open this door any way I want, you-!”
“Goodness, Zoro. Relax.” You interrupted his rant.
Zoro breathes heavily.
“I think a little TLC would do you some good, Mr Swordsman…” From your position on your knees you lean your body forwards towards the edge of the tub, arching your back and poking your ass up. It was shining with water and covered in bubbles.
“Why don’t you join me? The water’s still hot…” You lean back again and squeezed your soapy breasts together, your cunt starting to heat up at the thought of finally having the green haired swordsman naked in front of you.
“Hmm…” Zoro looks at your slick body and considers your offer. “I guess it would get everyone off my back about smelling. Fuck it.” He closes the door behind him and turns towards the tub.
You smiled and sunk back into the tub on your stomach this time, and folded your arms together over the edge of the tub and laid your head on them, so eager to watch him undress. He gently laid his swords down first before removing each layer of clothing piece by piece.
He had no idea what he was doing to you. Reading the room was never his strong suit. You remind yourself to close your mouth, realizing that it had dropped open slightly as he began untying his pants.
He lets them fall to the ground and steps out of them towards you.
*Wow… more like four sword style…* You thought to yourself.
As Zoro walks towards the steaming tub, he notices your eyes on him.
“Enjoying the view, pervert?” He smirks at you.
“Very much so, actually, thanks for asking. Now get in here.” You smile seductively and lean back in the tub making space for him between your legs. He steps into the tub one foot at a time and lowers himself in. Once slotted between your legs, he leans his broad, muscular back into you, leaving your pebbled nipples pressed against his skin.
He lets out a sigh as he feels the warm water comfort his body, sore from all his training that day. You start to rub at his huge shoulders, trying to alleviate some of the tension. He smelled like sake and sweat. He hums in approval as he leans back further into your adept touch. As you work his back and shoulders, you felt him starting to relax under your hands. Your hands eventually make their way towards his scarred chest, rubbing and caressing him there, so small and dainty against his large torso.
“Y/n… what exactly are you doing?” Zoro asked as one of your soft hands made its way to his pelvis and started rubbing small circles on his hip bone. He leans his head back onto your left shoulder and turns to look at you.
“What? I’m just trying to help you relax… is that so bad? Is it that terrible to let go for a little while?” You shoot him a wink.
“I guess it wouldn’t hurt… it’s been a long day.”
Taking that as the go ahead you reach for his half-hard dick under the bath water and wrap your hand around it. He flinches slightly. You begin to stroke him painfully slowly underneath the bubbles. He grows erect under your hand, his length and girth becoming even more impressive. You apply more pressure and he lets out a low groan.
“Does it feel nice, Zoro?” You purr into his ear.
“Obviously. But this isn’t what you want.” You were confused, this is exactly what you want, this was what you were here for, after all.
“Of course this is what I want, I want to make you feel good.” You reassure him how happy you were just sharing this intimate moment with him, finally seeing him relax.
“Jerking me off in the bathtub isn’t the way you want to do that, is it?” He turned again to look at you from where his head was resting on your shoulder. His lips looked so soft… how you wanted to feel them on your body… Okay maybe he was right, maybe you wanted something else…
“Zoro I-“ you try to continue.
“I know you well enough by now, I’ve heard you with the others. You’re insatiable, always screaming for more… You don’t want this, do you? You’d much rather have me throw your body around this bathroom right now and use it as a personal fuck-doll until you’re screaming and crying to be full of cum, right, y/n?” Zoro says so casually.
His nonchalant delivery of these filthy words made your cunt clench with arousal. He was right, you’d love nothing more than being manhandled and railed by him at his full strength. Maybe he felt the slight twitch in your hips but he doesn’t wait much longer for you to respond.
“Hmm? Am I right?” He asks you again.
“Yes…” You breath out even lower than a whisper. You felt your cunt start to ache with need. You were perfectly fine with stroking him to completion in a nice warm bath, but now with his mention of fucking you it was the only thing you could think about.
“Sorry I didn’t hear the rest of that… yes what?” Zoro teases you further with his voice, needing to hear you say what you truly wanted.
“Yes I want it. I want what you said. I want you to fuck me hard, without stopping until I’m full of your cum. I want you to use my body for your pleasure. That’s exactly what I want.”
“Hmm.” Zoro smiles before rising up from the tub. He steps out and grabs the towel you set on the side of the tub to dry himself off. He tosses it aside and grabs another towel from the counter and lays it out on the wooden floor of the ship's bathroom. “Well? What are you waiting for princess? A formal invitation? Get the fuck over here. I don’t have all day.”
You quickly hop out of the tub and scramble over to the towel and lay down on your back, propped up on your elbows. Your head was foggy with lust as he stood over you, body still damp and large cock standing at attention. You spread your legs as far as they would go, putting on a little show for him. Your body was wet from the bath water, but he could see the sticky, slick arousal on your throbbing clit and pink inner lips that were swollen and peaking out at him. Now you were the impatient one, you were trying to incite him to get on with it already, fill you up.
“Now let’s get some things straight. I’m not anything like that stupid shit-cook. I don’t ‘make-love’ and I don’t ask for permission. I’m going to fuck you the way I want and you’re going to take it like the good little slut I know you are.”
The way your pussy clenched around nothing did not go unnoticed by Zoro. “Please just fuck me, Zoro. Fuck me hard, I need it.”
“Hmm.” He smirks at you pleading for him from the floor with your legs spread impossibly wide. “Face down, ass up for me baby.”
You quickly shifted onto your front and held your body up on your hands and knees. You spread your legs so he would have access to your throbbing core, while arching your back and poking your ass up in the air at him. Zoro walks over to where you’re presenting yourself to him and gets down on his knees behind you. He lowers his face so he can get a better look at your leaking pussy.
“This worked up already? I haven’t even fucking touched you, you dirty slut. You love being treated like this, don’t you? Look at the way this pussy squeezes when I call you a little slut… You just need cock so bad, huh?”
You hang your head down, so flustered by his filthy mouth, letting out a big sigh and pushing your hips back pleading for him to get inside of you.
*SMACK*
“AH!” You shriek out as Zoro delivers a harsh slap to your pussy.
“I asked you a question, princess, I expect an answer.”
*SMACK* with this slap, you moaned.
“OH- YES! Yes I need cock I need your cock, please just fuck me now, please!”
“Oh don’t worry, I will. I’m going to fuck you so hard that you’re going to regret begging for it. Now take this cock and be good-“ He says with a wicked glint in his eye. He spreads your lips and cheeks with his hands painfully far and lands a gob of spit onto your pussy. After chuckling to himself, he begins to slide his thick length into your sopping hole.
“Fuck!” You throw your head back and slam your eyes shut as you steel your body to accept the large intrusion. “Fuck, finally, yes-“ You gasp out desperately.
Once Zoro was fully seated inside you, he doesn’t give you more than a second before he pulls out and slams back in at full force. You scream. He continues to pull himself out to the tip and drill himself back into you, speeding up his pace.
“God damn, princess. Still so tight? Such a sloppy little pussy I hardly expected it to feel this good.” Zoro continues slamming into your cunt while he keeps a tight grip on your hips. You moan with every thrust, losing yourself in the immense pleasure. You head fell forward again. Zoro used one of his large hands to pull your hair in a tight grip and snap your head up.
“Head up, slut.” He kept his grip on your hair, pulling hard as he continued fucking you. He landed a harsh smack onto your ass cheek and you squealed out as your battered pussy squeezed his length.
“Oh you like when I hit you like that? So fucking nasty! A little painslut!” He smacks your ass 3 more times in quick success and you cry out his name.
“Yes,” you pant out. “I love it so much, please give me more!” You while staring at the bathroom door in front of you. You felt that familiar pressure begin to build in your abdomen. You began to slam you hips back onto Zoro’s cock, desperately chasing your orgasm. Suddenly, you’re pulled up by your hair and flush against the swordsman’s scarred chest as he wrapped his free arm around your front and harshly grabbed your breast, squeezing your nipple painfully. You loved it.
“Uh uh, princess. I’m fucking you, not the other way around. You stay still like a good little fuck toy, or this is gonna hurt.” Your cunt clenched around him again, pushing out more sticky arousal to drip down past his balls.
Zoro breathed out an exasperated sigh.
“Seriously? You want me to fuck your shit up that badly? Fine, you asked for it.”
He flips onto his back, pulling your body with him, his cock never leaving its spot nestled deep inside your cunt. Zoro hooks his arms under your knees, pulling your legs as far as they would go and put his hands locked behind your head, forcing you to look at your sloppy, speared pussy that was currently swallowing his dick whole.
“Gonna absolutely fucking ruin you…” Zoro grunted out while he planted his feet and pounded into you from below. You felt your orgasm quickly approaching due to the angle he was hitting your spot from.
“Zoro I’m going to-“ You couldn’t hold it anymore, it was happening so fast. Your body started cumming before you even registered what happened next.
The bathroom door that Zoro neglected to lock was ripped open by an unsuspecting Usopp. You screamed at both the intrusion and at your body that started spasming and your pussy squirted right as he looked down at you from the door frame.
“OH MY GOD- YOU GUYS?!” Poor sweet Usopp had just watched you cum on Zoro’s dick, thinking he was coming in to catch a quick shower before bed.
“A bit busy here?!?” Zoro growled at him from underneath you, not faltering in his thrusts, being so close to cumming himself and not giving a shit who sees him wrecking you on the bathroom floor.
Usopp was gone in a flash without a second word, the bathroom door slamming behind him. Zoro continued to fuck you at an inhuman pace as you babbled unintelligibly, tears streaming down your face.
“Fuck you got so much tighter, you thought that was hot? Having him watch you squirt like that? You’re so fucking filthy. I’m going to fill this filthy little pussy up, just like you want so bad.”
You find your words finally and yell out at him,
“yes… Please! Cum in me! Need it!”
“Take it, princess.” Zoro emptied himself inside of you, burying himself deep to the hilt as he did it.
Both of you gasping for air, you laid on top of him for a few moments trying to catch your breath. He picks you up off his cock and wraps you in a towel, your hands still shaking from the intense fucking he just gave you. Zoro puts his clothes back on and picks you up bridal style.
“Alright, let’s go to bed.”
He carries you to your room and strips you of your towel and lays your underneath the covers in your bed. It was dark and you hear him walking around in your bedroom, figuring he was heading to the door. To your surprise, you feel the mattress sink and Zoro climbs under the blankets next to you.
“You don’t strike me as the sleepover type, Roronoa.” You yawn as you finish your sentence.
“I’m not, you just wore me out and your bed is way more comfortable than mine. Shut up and go to sleep.” Zoro lays next to you on his back, slipped out of his clothing as well. You turn towards him and wrap an arm around his chest and throw a leg over his pelvis. You didn’t expect a response, but he uses his arm behind you to wrap around your shoulder and pull you in further to his chest.
"I think we scarred Usopp for life..." You mutter to him as you recall what happened earlier in the bathroom.
"Ehhh whatever. It's about time he finds out what sex is." Zoro yawned loudly.
You chuckle.
“Goodnight, swordsman.” You smile to yourself.
“hmm.” He was already asleep.

“CDCR, probation. How may I help you?” you say to answer the phone.
With the receiver tucked between your ear and shoulder, you look at your current list of parolees. The spreadsheet shows three red lines, and you frown as you read the names.
“Hi, I’m calling about Dexter Wheeler,” the woman on the phone says. “I believe he’s one of your parolees.”
Sitting up straighter, you reply, “Yes, ma’am, he is.”
“Well, I’m sorry to bother you and I’m sure it’s nothing, but he hasn’t been to work in three days. His conditions for employment allow him sick time and personal time, but he hasn’t notified us, and he isn’t answering the phone.”
“Okay, I am supposed to have a check-in with him tomorrow,” you read from your screen. “I’ll look into this and let you know. Thank you for the call.”
“Of course. Is there anything else you need from me?”
“Nothing specific, no. Is there- Did you notice any unusual behavior before his absence?”
“He had been a bit distant,” she answers. “Unwilling to answer questions, easily agitated.”
“Did he make any threats or become overly belligerent?”
“No, no, nothing like that. I just figured he was tired or maybe he wanted another job.”
“I’ll certainly find out what has been going on with him.”
“Thank you. Would you mind calling me back after you speak to him? I want to be sure he’s okay.”
“Of course. I’ll keep you updated. Thank you.”
You return the receiver to the phone cradle and navigate to Mr. Wheeler’s parole file. He hasn’t checked in with you recently, and he hasn’t filed any change of employment or violated any conditions of his parole in the past. He’s never been overly kind, but he was trying to stay on the straight and narrow when you first met him. You think your parolees deserve a second chance, but they must be willing to do the work and prove that their second chance won’t be wasted.
With your phone on speaker, you call Mr. Wheeler. It rings repeatedly until an automated message alerts you that Dexter’s voicemail is full. That’s not a good sign.
You log out of your computer, gather your things, and tell your supervisor you’re doing a surprise visit. She encourages you to alert the police, and you nod before you leave the office. There’s no reason to think Mr. Wheeler will do anything rash, but it is still a good idea to have the police on standby.
“My favorite podcast buddy!” Nell exclaims when she answers your call. “What can I do for you?”
“Hey, Nell,” you reply, hitting your blinker. “I’m going to a parolee’s house; he hasn’t been at work for three days and he isn’t answering my calls. Any chance you could put some officers on standby for me?”
“Of course. What’s the address?”
You recite it from memory, then thank Nell. With the promise of another true crime party, you end the call and approach Mr. Wheeler’s apartment complex. It’s neither the safest nor the most dangerous in Los Angeles. You survey your immediate surroundings and exit the car to walk up the cracking concrete walkway.
The buzzer echoes in the dim hallway before you exit and look toward Mr. Wheeler’s balcony. One of his neighbors comes down the stairs and says your name.
“Mrs. Ritter,” you reply with a smile. “How are you? How are the kids?”
She sighs and clicks her tongue. “Still wilder than Tarzan.”
You laugh at her unusual analogy. She was one of your first parolees, and you’re proud of her progress in her personal and professional life.
“You here for Mr. Wheeler?” she inquires after hearing you’re doing well. “He has been holed up in that little pigsty since Friday night.”
“Really?” you ask. “Do you think he’s okay?”
“Still makin’ noise and it don’t smell no worse, if that’s what you’re askin’. Come on in, honey.”
She opens the gate for you, wishes you luck, and walks to a freshly detailed but clearly used BMW. You wave to her, then walk up the steps to Mr. Wheeler’s apartment.
“Mr. Wheeler!” you call after your knocks go unanswered. You say your name before you add, “I need to talk to you about your job.”
“I quit!” he yells from inside.
“I’m afraid that’s not how it works, Dexter. Open the door and we can talk.”
“I open this door, and we won’t be talking!”
At that, you step away from the door and move back down the stucco hallway.
“Last chance to work with me,” you call.
He throws something against the door, which rattles on its hinges, and you pull your phone from your pocket. With a quick text to Nell, you have backup on the way. Hopefully, you can talk to Mr. Wheeler after the situation is de-escalated.
Less than five minutes later, a police car parks behind your sedan and two officers exit it. You meet them at the bottom of the stairs and open the gate to let them into the apartment complex.
“Thank you so much for coming so quickly,” you say as you lead them up the stairs.
“No problem,” Officer Bradford replies.
“I’m Lucy Chen,” Lucy introduces. “And this is Sergeant Tim Bradford.”
“Nice to meet you,” you respond. “So, my parolee, Dexter Wheeler, lives in apartment 34R. His employer called me earlier because he violated his agreement with them and stopped showing up three days ago. He wasn’t answering my calls, so I came over and knocked on his door. He told me that if he opened the door, we wouldn’t speak, and then threw something at the door.”
Tim nods, then looks around the small hallway. “Any of the neighbors say anything?”
“One of the women who lives downstairs implied that his apartment is – for lack of a better word – disgusting, and that he’s been locked in it since he returned home from work four or so days ago.”
Tim’s eyes remain locked on yours as you speak, and he mirrors your movements as you turn slightly to face Mr. Wheeler’s apartment.
“You want us to take him into custody or just assist in getting inside?” Tim asks.
You sigh, then ask, “What do you recommend?”
“We lock him up,” he answers. “He threw something at you and threatened you.”
“But not in that order,” you remind him with a small smile.
“That’s worse, that’s practically carrying out a threat against a government official.”
“You know this guy,” Lucy points out. “What do you think would benefit him the most?”
“If you’d be willing, I think one more chance might nudge him toward the right decision. If he decides to go the hard way, do whatever you need to do.”
Tim nods while Lucy agrees. He steps to the side and gestures for you to pass him, moving you farther from the door. While your back is turned, Lucy raises her brows and looks between you and Tim. He shakes his head once sternly, then leads Lucy to the door.
Tim knocks with the side of his closed fist and calls, “LAPD! Open the door, we’ve got a few questions for you.”
Dexter doesn’t answer, so Lucy tries, “We just need to see that you’re okay, Mr. Wheeler.”
He still doesn’t answer, so Tim wraps his fingers around the door handle. It turns about halfway, then stops.
“Mr. Wheeler, we know you’re in there. Because you’re on parole, we can come inside without a warrant,” Tim explains. “Last chance to comply.”
“I’m not on parole!” he finally replies.
Tim raises his hands and drops them back to his sides as you deadpan, “Oh, I must’ve been mistaken.”
“We’re coming in, Mr. Wheeler,” Lucy says.
Something else hits the door with a thud, and Tim steps back before bringing his foot up. He kicks the door beside the lock and rushes inside when it splinters and swings open. Lucy lays her hand on her taser and follows Tim while you wait in the hall. A door opens farther down, and someone leans out to see the cause of the commotion.
“Everything’s under control,” you assure them. “Stay inside.”
Lucy returns to the door and steps out before taking a deep breath. “Tim’s bringing him out.”
“Is it bad?” you ask.
Lucy’s eyes widen as she nods. You message your supervisor that Wheeler’s living conditions are unsuitable, and he’s being taken into police custody.
“What?” Dexter asks as Tim shoves him out of the door.
As he closes the door, you catch a whiff of the interior and fight the urge to cover your nose. Tim clears his throat as he looks at you.
“Mr. Wheeler, why haven’t you attended work this week?” you ask.
“I quit,” he tells you.
“Well, you have to tell me that. It’s a violation of your parole.”
“You don’t need to know my every move. I’m not a child.”
“Is that why your home is so dirty?”
“None of your business.”
“Actually, it is. You also failed to answer my calls earlier or open the door for me. Two more violations.”
“I was busy!” he defends.
He attempts to step toward you, but Tim keeps a tight grip on his handcuffs and yanks him back. Wheeler falls, grunting when he hits the concrete landing.
“He was indeed busy,” Lucy tells you.
Your brows raise, and Tim rubs his jaw before he says, “There’s a prostitute in there.”
“He took a prostitute in there?!” you exclaim.
You’re not surprised that he engaged in a criminal offense but by the prostitute’s willingness to go into such a residence. Lucy takes a deep breath before she knocks and reenters the apartment. Almost immediately, she exits again with a scantily-clad woman in handcuffs, closes the door, and exhales.
“Well, Mr. Wheeler,” you begin. “The good news is, I’m not your parole officer anymore.”
He smiles up at you, and Tim ‘accidentally’ knocks his boot against Dexter’s side.
“Bad news,” Tim continues. “You’re going back to jail for numerous parole violations and engaging in prostitution.”
“You’re on parole?” the woman asks.
“That is what’s bothering you?” you and Tim ask simultaneously.
While she attempts to justify her actions, Tim radios for another unit to meet them at the apartment complex and transport the two arrested individuals before you.
As you end a call with your supervisor, Tim and Lucy talk to the officers escorting Mr. Wheeler and his female companion to lock up. You slide your phone into your pocket and wait for them to finish what they’re doing.
After the door closes and the other officers drive toward the main road, Lucy turns to Tim with a wide smile.
“What?” he asks, waving you over.
“Hello?” she exclaims. “Chemistry what? You and the parole officer are like a perfect match!”
“Chemistry?” Tim repeats just as you reach them. “With my wife?”
“Chemistry?” you say, just as Tim had. “Tim Bradford, do you have a crush on me?”
Tim sighs as Lucy looks rapidly between you and Tim.
“Careful,” you warn, while Tim snaps, “You’re going to get whiplash, and I don’t want to hear you complaining about it.”
“I have to get back to work,” you sigh. “Thank you for your help.”
“You’re welcome,” Lucy replies. “I- you’re married?!”
Tim rolls his eyes, pats your shoulder, and follows you to your car. Lucy watches as he opens your door for you and leans forward to tell you something that makes you smile.
“Tell me everything,” Lucy requests as they return to the shop.
Tim doesn’t reply while he follows your car out of the apartment parking lot. Of course, he knows you are perfect for him, but something about hearing it from someone else makes him love you even more.
“Why don’t we get attached to all of her calls?” Lucy asks instead.
“Why are you still talking?” Tim counters.
Lucy purses her lips, then decides, “The sarcastic comments are more enjoyable when your wife is around.”
Most things are, Tim thinks. He’s glad to know you’re safe, and as Lucy continues asking questions he won’t answer, he thinks about you and what you should do this weekend. It will probably be easier to create a plan after he gets the smell of Dexter Wheeler’s apartment off him and his shop and his wedding ring back on his finger.

“Oh, no,” Daphne murmurs. She leans back, turning slightly to look into Lieutenant Soto’s office. “Our vic was robbed last weekend.”
Selena sighs, then raises her phone toward her ear. “I’ll bring in Melon.”
“Oz, what’s the latest on the car?” Karadec inquires as he returns to the bullpen with Morgan.
“Still waiting to hear back from the DMV,” Oz answers.
“Daph?”
“The victim was robbed just over a week ago,” Daphne explains. “Part of a string of B&E thefts slowly progressing from simple wallet snatching to larceny. Lieutenant is alerting Melon.”
“Fantastic,” Karadec grumbles. “Are we thinking that the B&E went south? Homeowner was there, they can’t graduate to murder yet, so they snatch him?”
“From that house?” Morgan clarifies, her brows raised. “Not a chance.”
“Even the most prepared people can get caught off guard,” Oz points out.
“He had a Glock in his nightstand, he wouldn’t have let someone get that far into his house, or that close to him, without fighting back. Was there any sign of that?”
“No, there wasn’t,” Daphne says. “CSU isn’t done cataloging the weapons, so we’re not sure if any are missing.”
“I don’t see this guy getting caught off guard,” Morgan muses. “Not by some stranger sneaking in through a loose window.”
“The neighbor who wouldn’t talk to us this morning is in interview 2,” Karadec adds. “Lawyered up, but I think he’s just covering his own-“
“I heard a cry for help,” Lieutenant Melon interrupts, smiling as he enters the bullpen.
“Yeah,” Oz deadpans. “That’s what this is.”
“Quite the robbery spree you’ve stumbled upon. Estimated $2 million in property losses, even higher insurance payouts if we don’t start recovering things soon.”
“What’s the MO?” Morgan asks, flipping through the missing persons' case file.
“Initially, broken window, a few little, moderate risk items stolen.”
Morgan looks up, surprised to hear a voice she doesn’t recognize. She looks at you, then at Melon, then Karadec, and back at you.
“Yesterday morning, reported robbery used a crowbar to pry open a sliding glass door and cleaned out the safe,” you continue. “No sign of forced entry into the safe, just the door.”
“Strange,” Daphne murmurs.
“So, what can the missus and I do for you?” Melon asks. “Solve your case?”
“Missus?” Morgan repeats. She notices how Karadec shifts, pushing his jaw out as he rubs his jaw. It’s evident that he wants to speak but stops himself.
“We’ve been undercover,” you explain. “Trying to get this guy to rob a new, naïve rich couple.”
“Translation: she’d never settle for Melon,” Selena interjects.
“Hey, I’m a catch,” Melon argues.
“More like someone would catch something from you,” Oz adds.
You smile, and when you lock eyes with Karadec, you both shake your heads.
“Yesterday’s robbery wasn’t the same thief,” Morgan interrupts. “The approach pattern was completely different.”
“Approach pattern,” Melon repeats softly.
You look over Karadec’s shoulder to their case board. Tapping the simple black band on your left ring finger, you mentally review the facts of the case. Adding a missing person to a robbery case means the criminal is progressing. If more than one criminal is working here, your job becomes harder.
“Bottom to top,” Morgan says. “Your average thief works from the bottom up. Makes it easier to rifle through drawers because you don’t have to close one to get to the next. That’s where we get the whole ripped apart scene cliché. Yesterday’s case – and our missing person – produced scenes that were relatively neat. Because… any guesses?”
“The perp worked top down,” you and Karadec answer together.
“Right!” Morgan snaps, turning toward the case board. “So, if we remove these two cases… That gives us one planner, someone unafraid to go straight from- what’d he take?”
“From which scene?” Melon inquires.
“Yesterday.”
“Uh…” Melon opens the case file and skims it quickly before he answers, “A pair of diamond earrings, a Degas copy, and a thumb drive. Total estimated value: $14,000.”
“The earrings are most of that,” you add. “Apparently the thumb drive was empty, because the report didn’t value it in any way.”
“No intellectual property,” Daphne agrees. “Then why steal it? Not like they’re expensive or hard to come by.”
“There is something on it,” you realize. “Something he didn’t want the police to know about.”
“Maybe something worth kidnapping someone for,” Karadec adds.
“Whoa,” Melon interjects, raising his hands. “That’s a bit of a jump. It’s a thumb drive owned by someone who is not your victim.”
“Interior,” you say.
Morgan nods excitedly while Melon turns toward you with a sigh.
“The Degas copy was ‘Interior,’ which depicts a meeting between a man and a woman. It’s tense, dangerous, also called ‘The Rape.’”
“Make the connection, dear wife,” Melon pleads.
Karadec tips his head to the side, holding Morgan’s attention with his reactions to how Melon speaks to you.
“Follow me,” you invite.
Karadec moves first, falling into line behind you. You walk into Melon’s office without asking permission, and he scoffs when Morgan and Karadec join you.
“Get over it, Walter,” you encourage, uncapping a marker to alter his board.
“Is this even in English?” Morgan inquires, squinting to read a sticky note.
“Ha, ha,” Melon mutters. “What are we doing here?”
“This,” you answer, circling an address on the board. “The robbery from yesterday. Compare this address to the one of your missing person.”
Karadec’s eyes bounce around the board as he thinks. “454,” he realizes. “They’re a number apart, and the street names are just a few letters off.”
“As if someone had part of an address and was looking for something specific,” Daphne adds.
“And covering their tracks by taking something worth missing,” Oz says.
“He was looking for the thumb drive,” you deduce.
“Why?” Morgan asks. “None of our suspects – none of yours, either – have a clear connection to the victim.”
“Where was the Degas purchased?” Selena asks.
“Art dealer in downtown LA,” Daphne answers.
“Maybe someone should go look for another,” she suggests.
“Like a well-to-do married couple?” you ask, smiling.
“Precisely what I was thinking.”
“Well done,” Karadec says.
“Thank you,” you reply. “Now, if you’ll all excuse me, I need to feign an interest in impressionist art with my husband.”
Morgan’s eyes widen as she watches Karadec. He doesn’t react as before; instead, he lets you take his hand and lead you out of the office. There’s no sense that he doesn’t want you to touch him, no second-guessing of your intentions, or startled expression. He’s used to that, she realizes.
“So, what’s the deal with Karadec?” Morgan asks, back in the Major Crimes bullpen.
“What do you mean?” Daphne replies.
“He was ready to knock Melon’s teeth out. Followed a certain officer out of here like a lovestruck puppy.”
“Notice that, did you?” Oz interjects.
“What am I missing here?”
“I thought you were supposed to be the smart one,” Daphne teases.
“Karadec just texted,” Selena calls. “They found something.”
“Need backup?” Oz asks.
Selena chuckles rather than answering, and Morgan slaps her legs.
“Seriously, what am I missing? Are they some kind of dream team or something?”
“What did you see?” Selena asks.
“Karadec longing for her, but- wait. Seriously?”
“Can neither confirm nor deny,” Oz answers. “But the first part wasn’t that hard to notice.”
“What do you see?” Karadec asks softly.
“Some of these frames are hollowed out,” you whisper. “There’s more than paintings in here, but before we start talking, we need to know what it is they’re moving.”
“Drugs or money.”
“Isn’t it always?”
“Cover me,” you request.
Karadec nods, straightens his shoulders, and buttons his blazer as he walks toward the man at the desk. You walk toward the back of the store, pretending to look at the paintings as you locate the cameras overhead. Directly beneath one of the lenses, you bend your knees to lower, then run your fingers along a delicately beaded frame. Slipping your fingers over the corner, you examine the narrow slotting in the wood. When you run into a small plastic pouch, you pull your hand back and look at your fingers. The white powder on them could be wood or printing materials, but it’s not likely.
“Sorry, sweetheart,” you apologize as you return to Karadec’s side. “There’s just so much to see… to do.”
“Your husband was telling me that you’re a fan of Degas,” the man whose nametag reads Antonio states with a smile. “We’ve got no shortage of quality prints.”
“I saw my favorite at the back,” you reply. “They’re beautiful, very well done. We were actually referred here. One of our friends who shares our appreciation for arts, and its many influences, mentioned that his friend Leonard loved your service and the purchases he’s made.”
“Leonard is one of our best customers,” Antonio responds. “Any friend of Leonard’s is a friend of ours. Perhaps I could walk you through a bit of the influences we’re passionate about here.”
“We’d love that,” Karadec agrees, smiling at you as he traces his finger down your finger beneath your wedding ring.
“Two cases closed in one afternoon,” you muse as you fall into your seat. “Drug running secrets stolen, people abducted to procure more product, the American dream. You’re welcome.”
“We helped solve your case too,” Daphne points out.
You crack one eye open before you argue, “I had to pretend to be Mrs. Walter Melon for no reason.”
“You deserve a medal,” Oz says, shuddering for emphasis.
“You also pretended to be married to Karadec, no?” Morgan asks.
You turn toward her, then look at Oz and Daphne. “She doesn’t know?”
“We’re not legally or morally permitted to tell anyone,” Daphne replies.
“Under threat of bodily harm,” Oz adds.
“Promise of bodily harm,” Karadec corrects. “And, no, Morgan, we weren’t pretending for that part.”
Morgan’s jaw drops, and she turns quickly to look between you and Karadec. She’s observant and brilliant, so you fully anticipated that she would have figured out your relationship status already.
“Breathe a word of it to anyone,” Karadec warns.
“Yeah, yeah, bodily harm, I caught that.” She leans toward you and whispers, “I have so many questions.”
“No.”
“Wasn’t talking to you Karadec.”
He hums, repeats, “No,” and tosses you his keys.
You wave over your shoulder, and Morgan’s excited chattering seems to follow you through the station.
Karadec watches you, spinning his ring on his finger. You feel his eyes on you but don’t say anything as you prepare dinner. When the food is in the oven, you wash and dry your hands, then walk toward Karadec. He looks up at you from his seat, and you smile.
“You’re brooding,” you point out.
“I don’t brood,” he argues.
You hum and move between his knees and the coffee table. Karadec leans back, spreading his knees apart so you can stand comfortably between his legs.
“Want to talk about it?” you ask.
“Oh, yeah, I’ve been waiting to all day.”
“Save the sarcasm, Adam.”
He lifts his brows, barely containing his smile as he lifts his hands to your thighs.
“Are you jealous?”
“Of course not.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
“I know he does it just to get under my skin.”
“Then don’t let him,” you encourage, rubbing your hands down your husband’s forearms.
“Not that easy,” he argues.
“Yes, it is. He’s Melon, and I come home with you. Whatever he says or does, just ignore him.”
Karadec nods, and you scratch your fingernails gently over his wrists.
“I love you,” you say.
“I love you.”
“I also threatened to punch Melon today.”
“Should’ve carried through,” Karadec muses. “Sorry for letting him in my head. It’s been a weird few days.”
“I get it. No hard feelings. As long as you’re not grumps.”
“Did you just say ‘grumps'?”
You smile, and Karadec shakes his head as he tugs your hips forward. Before you can catch yourself, he pulls your knee to his side so you drop into his lap.
“Ah,” you murmur. “You don’t like that Melon acts all soft and loving when we’re undercover and you think you have to do it in private.”
“I thought you were a good detective.”
You inhale, playing up your offense at his taunting. Before you can reply, Karadec slips his hand beneath your shirt and rests it against your waist. Lifting your hand, you cup his jaw and lean toward your husband.
“Have anything else you need to talk about?” you inquire softly. “A case? Personal stuff?”
“No,” Karadec answers. “Not right now.”
“Right. No talking.”
Karadec nods, pulling you closer. “That sounds like a good idea.”
You smile, then kiss your husband. He holds your waist in one hand and cups the back of your head in the other while you hold his face, brushing your thumb over his beard and up to his cheekbone. Moments like these are your favorite, and make you remember why you love Karadec so much.
Although your relationship may not be common knowledge, you’re happy, content, and secure. The quiet nights after the long, hectic days make it all worth it. No one notices or questions why you carry around hand sanitizer and keep an eye on Karadec during joint operations. You appreciate the privacy, but they’re missing out on a picture of happiness, love, and pure joy.

Dennis Reynolds does not do relationships.
They’re messy. They’re draining. They’re restrictive and quite frankly, Dennis didn’t want to deny himself of all the potential hotties out there that he hadn’t met yet. So, he was always in the dating pool and open to the next manipulation opportunity.
He was a difficult man to tie down simply because he didn’t want to be. Yeah, some of the perks that came with having a girlfriend were attractive to Dennis, but the overall concept of being in a relationship was enough of a deterrent to happily sacrifice those benefits. He’d convinced himself he was better off single anyways.
Dating you was different because unlike the rest of his sexual conquests, he found it impossible to complete the D.E.N.N.I.S System. He couldn’t separate entirely. You were basically a part of the gang now, especially after you’d struck up a deal with Frank to become an ‘employee’ of Paddy’s Pub.
"Hey Frank, can I ask you something kinda private?" You asked after knocking quietly on the open office door to get his attention.
Frank screws his face up and looks at you from behind the desk. "Woah, hey kid… I ain’t into chicks your age alright?”
“What?” You exclaimed in disgust. “No! I need advice from you. Jesus, Frank..."
"Advice? Ohhhh... Like fatherly advice? Cos I totally get your Dad skipped town and left you all alone but I’m not the role model you should be looking up to. I ain’t a good person.”
"My dad didn’t leave me Frank, he died when I was three. I barely even remember him.” You shrugged casually. “Besides, you being a shitty role model is exactly why I came to you. Someone who's financially corrupt and has successfully gotten away with tricking the government.”
“Say no more.” Franks grins, kicking his legs up on the desk and pulling out a cigar case from the top drawer. “What are we talking?”
“Tax evasion.”
Before he could cut the tip of the cigar he burst into laughter at your response. “Why?”
You explained to Frank about how your family trust fund worked and the conditions that were set around accessing the millions of dollars in their estate. As long as you and your cousins had a ‘proper’ job and received some sort of legitimate government-taxable income, you could access the trust.
One of your cousins insisted on becoming a filmmaker instead of going to college and wanted to access the trust fund to pay for the production. Your aunt was firm that until his little project actually turned a profit, he’d have to get a job and work in the meantime. Now, he’s a thirty two year old aspiring filmmaker without a single completed project and working at a fucking vape store in Los Angeles.
His sister wasn’t much better. She had zero ambition or drive to make a life for herself. Her financial plan was to meet someone richer so she didn’t have to worry about it. She was a fucking moron, the whole family knew it. Her parents paid for a building just to get her into Stanford her grades were so bad. Credit where credit is due though, that’s where she met her equally as dumb yet uber-rich husband.
“How much do you need to earn for them to count it as a job?” Frank asks out of curiosity.
You shrug, “Anything with a payslip I guess. It doesn’t matter so much about what the job is, it’s more so they know we’re doing something productive with our lives each day instead of blowing all the cash and doing nothing.”
“Tell you what. I’ll put you down in the books Paddy’s and say you work here.“
“Really? That… Was easy...” You were a skeptic. “What do you want in return, huh?”
Frank was a businessman at his core, he knew never to enter a negotiation unless there was some sort of benefit to him. For the average Joe in this situation, they’d demand money but Frank has more money than he possibly needs — as do you.
“What do I want? How am I s’posed to know? You’re putting me on the goddamn spot here, kid!” Frank defended. “Just- You owe me one… I’ll cash in the favour whenever an opportunity comes up.”
That was how you (kind of) ended up working at Paddy’s with the gang.
The first four years of knowing you were tricky for Dennis because you were under 21 and the gang had enforced a rule amongst themselves to be better influencers around you to not taint your young, impressionable mind. Plus you weren’t legally allowed in the bar so you didn’t seen them as often as you did now.
Dennis assumed that once you were 21, it was open season and he could manipulate you at his full potential. You were basically in an incubator period from 18 to now, so Dennis had strategically been making ‘deposits’ until you had reached full maturity. And now that you had, he was ready to make a hefty withdrawal.
Except you knew that he just wanted sex. You weren’t dumb. You still flirted with him for those 4 years sure, but you knew exactly what he wanted from you in the end and wanted to see him work for it. You knew how his usual tactics worked because he’d always boast about his sexual conquests at the bar.
Much to his chagrin, you weren’t all over him or begging to bang the second you turned 21 which drove the man crazy. His usual tactics worked with women who didn’t know him, but he had to work a lot harder to win you over because you knew what he was like. He had to create a new strategy.
A new system.
After about 6 more months of sexual tension, you finally agreed to go on a date with him. It was one of the rare moments that Dennis was thrown off his rhythm when it came to women, which only intrigued him more about you. After he’d pulled his classic ‘oh no the restaurant is closed’ ruse, he suggested that you both go back to his apartment for takeout and a movie instead. He’d started the date off strong by getting you back to his place this easily, so he was confident the rest of his process would unfold as planned.
Cool, calm and collected.
You hadn’t been inside Mac and Dennis’ apartment since the drunken one night stand you had with Dennis. It was weird to be back inside because as much as it seemed sort of familiar, it still so foreign because you hadn’t really remembered that night and rushed out the next morning.
“Mac and I rented a bunch of DVD’s yesterday so it’s kinda perfect timing to have a movie night.”
The term ‘movie night’ was thrown around so often amongst the gang that sometimes Dennis found it hard to keep up with which movie night was which. It meant different things depending on who said it, and in what context. You know, like how words work? Whatever, it was Dennis’ problem not yours.
For example, when Frank ever referred to movie night, it meant one of two things:
1. The gang had invited him (on the rare occasion) to their existing group movie night arrangement.
2. He and Charlie were having a ‘Gruesome Twosome Tuesday’.
You see, it’s the way you say it that suggests innuendo. Saying movie night plain and simple doesn’t hint toward there being any other meaning. Movie night however, gave the impression that it’s not to be taken by its standard definition. That is was in fact, not the usual movie night.
Look at Sweet Dee next. If she said movie night, it meant that she had somehow weaselled her way into the boys movie night. More often than not, it was by eavesdropping on their conversation and assuming she was invited when she wasn’t. When she said movie night, it meant she was using it as an excuse to bang some guy on a first date without having to leave her apartment. A low effort win-win for her.
When Mac or Charlie said movie night, it meant it was one of the regular guys nights where Charlie went to Dennis and Mac’s apartment with a case or two of beers and hung out as they always did. Those happened multiple times a month. If either of them were talking about movie night though, it meant that Dennis had granted them access to one of his sex tapes to watch as a special treat.
Dennis had planted the idea of finding Bigfoot in Frank, Mac and Charlie’s heads earlier that day. All he had to do was look at his phone and say ‘holy shit there was a Bigfoot sighting in the Poconos’ and they were off on an impromptu camping trip. Mac wasn’t home which meant Dennis had the apartment to himself and now, he had a lovely lady to share it with.
“Let me guess…” Dennis said narrowing his eyes at you and pressing a finger to his lips as he pretended to read your mind. “Romantic comedy?”
“A rom-com on a date… How original,” you laughed with a playful eye roll, leaning against the back of the sofa and sipping your drink.
“Okay, how ‘bout a horror then?” He asked, resting his arm along the back of the couch, subtly bridging the distance between the two of you and chuckling. “Unless you’re too scared…”
Scary movies were the back up option for Dennis, but that was only the first detour. It was fine, he was smart enough to know the best manipulators accounted for deviations from the plan like this. Besides, watching a horror film meant that he could play the protective masculine stereotype instead of the in-touch-with-his-feelings guy. Both stereotypes worked with women so again, the plan was still on the right track.
He thought that at the inevitable jump scares, you’d curl into his side and cover your eyes. He’d then suggest turning it off, not wanting to cause any nightmares for you of course. You’d insist you wanted to keep watching and he’d say how cute you were when you were being brave — a comment laced with patronising undertone but he’d say it before leaning in for the kiss so you’d be focused elsewhere. Then? Well, then the second step of the D.E.N.N.I.S System would be nicely progressing.
Except you didn’t get scared, you laughed.
Fuck. Dennis had to pivot his strategy again. Shifting his approach to make fun of the movie with you instead, both of you made snarky comments throughout the film. He usually did that sort of thing with Mac, so naturally he was throwing out quips with ease. Each of them just as funny as the last.
And you know what? You were pretty fucking funny too. It surprised him, which it shouldn’t have because he knew your sarcastic sense of humour was predominantly witty, but he was just pleasantly elated that you could keep up with him. He was so just used to Mac’s dumb Austin Powers references and out of context Borat jokes said at the worst moments that it was nice to not have to deal with that for once.
After the movie ended, you were both pretty intoxicated and Dennis had made you laugh for hours on end. He was sure you’d be begging for his cock by now — he played a great game. He had you like putty in his hands. Add in the fact that you couldn’t drive home mixed with living 45 minutes away, and he had the perfect recipe to have you to stay over for the night.
Unfortunately for him, you politely declined. “I have an early morning tomorrow so I’ll get a cab home, it’s okay. Thank you for tonight though, I had fun.” You said slinging your bag over your shoulder and heading out to the hall.
“You’ll text me when you get home, yeah? I want to make sure you’re safe.” Dennis said with a charming grin, resting his arm up against the door frame to physically stand over you. Power move. He’d have loved to try to convince you to stay but that would have come across as pathetic. Only little bitch boys begged a woman for sex, real men convinced women that they wanted it.
And so, you finished the night of your first date in the backseat of a taxi, smiling ear to ear at the fact you’d successfully manipulated Dennis as much as he had attempted (and failed) to manipulate you. You knew what kind of guy Dennis was, you knew he’d be playing the role of a perfect man. You even picked up on his little scheme before it started when you’d googled the restaurant to see the menu. You were far too intrigued to see how his plan would play out to question him on the restaurants opening hours.
You’d also steered clear of cliche rom-com movies and let him suggest a horror film. You, a relative fan of the genre had heard terrible things about the latest M. Night Shyamalan movie but deliberately told him the complete opposite. Apparently it’s terrifying you said, acting as though you were nervous to watch it because of the raving reviews. Dennis loved a damsel in distress, a weak, vulnerable woman down on her luck or desperate enough to believe his empty promises.
As a woman of high intelligence and even higher standards, you knew from the get-go that you wouldn’t sleep with him that night. With neither of you remembering the one time you’d had sex four years prior, and the palpable sexual tension you’d both built up since, you knew Dennis was dying to fuck you again. You might be younger than him but you weren’t naive. Nor blind. You didn’t want to see how long you could make him wait for sex. No, no, no. That wasn’t enough long-term satisfaction. A rookie’s game. And you were no rookie. In terms of sex and experience comparative to Dennis yes, but you weren’t a rookie at manipulating people psychologically. Dennis thought he was winning his little manipulation game, and he was, but the poor guy didn’t realise he was the only one playing.
You and Dennis were manipulators at your very cores. You enjoyed playing the game as much as he did. The only difference was that he played to win and you played for your own amusement. You knew that he used the D.E.N.N.I.S system with every woman he pursued, and he wouldn’t stop until it was complete. That then became your motivation. He couldn’t win if he couldn’t complete all the steps and you wouldn’t go anywhere unless you grew bored of him.
Whether you or Dennis liked to admit it, you were pretty fucking similar — just in different ways. On the surface you both looked like polar opposites. And for the most part you were, but on the same deranged and twisted spectrum. You both denied you had feelings but you both had big emotions.
Dennis showed his anger outwardly by yelling and shamelessly causing a scene, commanding the power and authority over people by being the most dominant figure. Whereas your anger presented in a chillingly calm manner that made people far more unsettled than an explosive argument. You were the type of person to feel a tear roll down your face whilst laughing with how angry you were.
Charlie was always really scared when you got angry. More so than with Dennis.
Mac found Dennis scarier of course because he was emotionally attached to the man and never wanted to disappoint him, but with you he assumed he’d put you in a headlock or overpower you with some sick karate moves if you were to ever fight. You weren’t a physical fighter though, never was and never will be. Especially not against grown men.
One time you’d gotten in an argument with Mac about who knew Dennis better. You were in your mid twenties at this stage and Mac had overheard you talking about ‘the true Dennis’ to Charlie. He interrupted you and without any context, scrutinised you (and Charlie) for your ‘stupidity’ thinking you knew his own roommate and best friend better than he did. You had started to explain how you were speaking in terms of clinical psychology, he thought yelling the loudest and not listening to anyone would help drive home his point. You didn’t even disagree with him all, you were simply just talking about different things.
The next day you stopped by Mrs. Mac’s house and sent him a photo of the two of you sitting on the front porch having a cigarette together — a moment of maternal bonding Mac had craved his whole life. He furrowed his brows when he received the text and once Dennis noticed his confusion and saw the photo for himself, he grinned like the god damn Cheshire Cat.
“Is that your Mom? Fuck, that’s a good move… That’s really good…” Dennis trailed, impressed by your psychological warfare against Mac. Triggering his severe parental issues? Genius idea on your part.
That was the first moment Dennis truly respected you as a fellow manipulative elite. You were ruthless just like him which made you all the more challenging to conquer. It was his biggest project yet, four years and counting.
Mac runs his hand through his hair dramatically and paces back and forth across the living room. “She is such a bitch, dude! Why is she still trying to be a part of the gang? Like, first she tries to steal you away from me- us, and then fights me saying she knows you better than anyone else? Like hello? I literally live with you Dennis.” Mac scoffs, frowning over at Dennis who was too busy zooming into the picture.
“Wait, is your Mom smiling?! Wow… I didn’t know she knew how to do that.”
Mac snatches the phone back, “No! She’s squinting from the sun! Obviously. But Dennis, trust me she was such a psycho yesterday fighting me over you.”
Dennis had already zoomed in on your chest in the photo and was far too preoccupied staring at your tits to care about the conversation anymore. “You might live with me sure, but I haven’t been inside you.”
“You-”
“And I’m never going to.” Dennis finishes bluntly, not wanting to entertain the ludicrous conversation whatsoever.
Turned out you went over to Mac’s mom’s house to she had any of Mac’s old high school yearbooks. You weren’t up to anything particularly diabolical, you just wanted to see if you could get any dirt on Dennis because you weren’t convinced any of them were popular in school. You partly knew that taking the photo was with Mac’s mom would trigger him so you sent it just as an amusing little power play.
“Hey Mrs. Mac. Brought you these.” You said tossing a fresh cigarette deck at her. After she had already coughed a puff of smoke in your face as she answered the door mind you.
She grunted at you and stepped outside onto the patio, sitting down in her usual chair and opening the pack you’d given her. She was already smoking inside before you got there but here she was lighting a new one now. The half-smoked and still lit cigarette was burning a small hole in the sofa inside but not enough to cause a fire.
That wouldn’t be for a few more years.
Mrs. Mac held the cigarette between her wrinkled lips and scowled up at you, “Sit down.”
“Oh. Yeah, yeah okay. Thanks.” You said quickly sitting in the other chair. You’d only met the woman once or twice before and had barely heard her speak more than a few sentences.
She held the open pack towards you and grunted, which you interpreted as ‘do you want one’ and thanked her before lighting it.
“Sorry for showing up unannounced, I needed to get away from the guys.”
She nods, “Mmph.”
“I was wanting to look at some of Mac’s old school stuff? They were talking about it the other day is all, I’m a little curious.”
Silence.
“Is his room uh, just upstairs? Or…”
Mrs. Mac nods and takes a long drag of her cigarette, saying nothing but turning towards you this time.
“Cool… Yeah I’ll just go look after I finish this.”
She looks away from you again and closes her eyes, leaning back in her chair and letting the sunlight hit her face. “Do you ever shut the hell up? Just sit and smoke kid. The sun is out. Life is good.”
You recall Mac saying she thrived in sunlight once, which you were intrigued by because she was the human embodiment of a brick wall. But this was pretty optimistic of her. After a few minutes of more weirdly uncomfortable silence, she suddenly coughed and spluttered, spitting out a sizeable amount of phlegm into a nearby empty beer can before resuming her sunbaking.
That’s when you pulled out your phone and took a photo of the two of you to send to Mac — when his Mom was ‘thriving’ with you and not him. From that moment on, Mac had a grudge against you. For stealing Dennis and stealing his Mom.
Your on and off again nature with Dennis became a normal part of the gang’s dynamic. Sometimes you were both friendly and on good terms, sometimes you were at each other’s throats or dating other people to make the other jealous. Sometimes you would agree to part ways and not keep doing this toxic cycle, but a month or two later you’d be hooking up in the back office again.
Nobody could keep up with how to define yours and Dennis’ relationship because the two of you never wanted a definition or a label in the first place. It was just a never ending game of cat and mouse that most people would find infuriating and draining — but it worked for both of you and your twisted conniving selves.
There were little things that the two of you would do that subtly showed you meant more to each other than just casual sex. Tiny details that showed you both had cracks in your meticulously crafted armour against catching feelings. For example, whenever the gang had a particularly dangerous or life-threatening scheme, you were always the first person Dennis would look for or check was okay. It just became a natural instinct for him to protect you.
Without being asked to or having any knowledge of his dislike for the skins, you peeled Dennis’ apples for him. It was strangely comforting knowing he didn’t have to explain to you how the skins were riddled with toxins because he assumed that was what you believed too. They weren’t, and you knew that. You just peeled them sometimes, which almost felt like fate the first time he saw.
Dennis was too much of a realist to believe in fate, but if he did he might have thought the apple thing was a sign that you were a keeper. Maybe.
“What’re you eating?” He said with a slight scrunch of his nose.
“Apple slices with cinnamon sugar. It’s like Apple pie but without the pie. And cold.”
Dennis smiles gently, “You peel your apples?”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m a fucking baby. I know.” You sighed, not in the mood for another joke about your age. The guys always teased you about that and it was getting old.
“No, no… I don’t eat the skins either. I’m not fucking with you I swear,” he assured.
He liked that you remembered to peel his apples from that point on. It made him feel seen and heard, which was something he didn’t encounter very often. He liked knowing that you cared about his wants and needs, like you actually gave a fuck. You even asked him for his advice when you went shopping by texting him different outfit options. He liked that too, being able to dictate your wardrobe to his tastes. His favourite thing though, was when you would ask his opinion on what nail polish colour you should get each time you visited the salon.
“Hey Dee, c’mere for a sec.” Dennis said ushering her over to him and showing her your most recent text. “Do different nail polish colours mean different things for women?”
“Red means she’s a whore.” Artemis calls out from where she was sitting in the bar. She’s several margaritas in but she’s still as quick as a whip.
“Oh! Yeah, that one’s true actually. Classy women like myself, get elegant neutral colours.” Dee said smugly holding the backs of her hands up to show her pale pink nails.
“So I’ll say get pink then?”
“No, don’t just say pink,” Dee says mocking his stupid boy ignorance. “It’s called ‘Bubble Bath’ and it’s a classic.”
Artemis then joins them at the other end of the bar. “It’s all about tone. Hot pink? Spring break. Baby pink? Eh, it’s pretty safe all-round. If she gets anything neon or super long, she’s trashy. And if she gets only a clear top coat she’s probably a prude.” She shrugs.
Dennis can’t help but imagine about what your hand would look like around his cock with different coloured nails. Neutral colours weren’t a bad image. Better than something gaudy like electric blue or something he thought.
“Bright red is for cheap whores but dark red is for those real expensive whores. Y’know the ones that don’t suck cock for less than a benjamin.” Artemis continues.
“Wait- Are you kidding? I can charge a hundred bucks for a quick lil trip down south? Huh…” Dee ponders, briefly considering the quick source of income.
Frank, who was eavesdropping from one of the booths in the bar laughs, “Don’t kid yourself Deandra. Gangly women like you could probably only get fifty bucks max.”
“You have good feet though. Men pay big bucks for flippers like those.” Artemis added.
“Dark red it is.” Dennis smirks, responding to your text and telling you to send a photo when you were done.
When your photo came through? Fuck, yeah Dennis knew he made the right decision. It looked hot on you. And they’d look even hotter roaming his body later that night he thought.
Which they did.

“Slacking off?” Tim asks. “A little early for civvies.”
You look up quickly, surprised by his presence outside the locker room. “I’m leaving early,” you explain weakly.
“I remember,” he replies, observing you. “Dinner with your parents.”
“Right.”
“Enjoy.”
Dropping your eyes to his boots, you nod and answer, “I will. Bye.”
Tim watches you go, wondering why dinner with your parents puts you on edge. Every time you mention them, your eyes shift, you grow nervous and jumpy, and the strong, confident cop he knows retreats into the shell of a scared woman. It’s a change he recognizes, one he understands, and he knows you lied when you said you’d enjoy yourself.
“You know what I think?” your dad asks.
You’re going to tell me no matter what, you think.
“Your job is bad enough,” he says, interrupting himself to take a drink. “But you could at least dress like a woman while you’re off the clock.”
Glancing down at your outfit, you try not to let his words affect you. Your parents have been like this for your entire life. Some might call it verbal abuse, while others consider it an absence of a filter. Regardless, your parents have never hesitated to point out your every insecurity. The worst part of seeing them, you think, is that they see your scars and rip those old wounds open again, tearing you down with every word they speak.
“Can you afford some new clothes?” your mother asks. “Maybe then you could find a man who’d give you a second thought.”
Chewing your inner lip, you nod silently. You feel like you’re twelve years old again, too big for the frame they try to shove you into. It’s been years since you gave up on trying to please them, but it doesn’t take away the pain.
“Although,” your dad continues, “who would want to start a family with a beat cop who could get shot at any moment?”
“Beat cops are a real family,” you mumble under your breath, fiddling with the napkin in your lap.
You don’t see your mom move, but the sharp slap sound of her palm hitting your face startles you enough that you finally look her in the eye. Your hand raises to your stinging cheek without thought. You know it won’t bruise, and something deep inside you tells you to stand up for yourself, to leave, and never look back.
“I’m getting another drink,” your dad states, stumbling slightly as he stands.
You’ve been in this exact spot too many times, you realize. So, you decide to play the part until they’re ready to leave. Sitting still, you listen, nod, and apologize as you hold back the tears threatening to spill.
“Look at the time,” your mom mutters after you serve dessert.
“And we have people who give a crap about where we are,” your dad adds, laughing at you. “We better head out. Next time we do this, don’t make the- the food like that and buy more drinks.”
“Will do,” you answer, standing.
“That didn’t sound like an apology,” your mother patronizes.
“I’m sorry,” you say immediately. “I’ll do better next time.”
“That means we have to come back,” your dad grumbles.
Not if we can help it, you think.
“Sweetheart,” your mother says, wrapping her hand around your wrist. Her nails dig into the sensitive skin above your pulse point, but you level your expression. “You need to try harder.”
“Sure. I will.”
She releases your hand, but your dad takes it just as quickly, his grip tighter and stronger than hers. You pull back instinctively, and he raises his other hand. When you cower away from him, dropping your chin, he laughs and twists the skin of your arm harshly.
“Better food,” he seethes. “Better news. If we come over here again and you’re still a disappointment… Just don’t.”
“Yes, sir,” you force out.
You stand in place, staring at the dirty dishes on your table as the door slams behind them. Alone, you stumble backward until you hit the wall, your vision growing blurry with tears. Sinking to the floor, you let yourself cry, and within a minute, heavy sobs shake your entire body. You feel paralyzed, your mind viciously reminding you that you and your parents are on a crashing course that only worsens with time.
But, you remember, they are your parents. They loved you at some point, but it’s always been like this. Maybe you are the problem, a voice you don’t recognize says in your mind.
You want to forget tonight, forget the pain in your chest and along your skin, so you reach for your phone. You’re texting Tim before you think about it. You don’t know what to say, but you’re desperate. Anything would be a welcome distraction, so you ask if he’s busy.
It changes from Delivered to Read, but he doesn’t reply. So, you toss your phone aside and pull your knees to your chest, curling in on yourself as if it will make the world disappear.
A knock on your front door pulls you out of your teary reverie that is on the constant brink of returning to the nightmare of reality. Walking to the door, you hope that it isn’t your parents. You look through the peephole before you open the door, sure your surprise is evident.
“What happened?” Tim asks, his face softening when he sees your tear-stained face and red cheek.
You shake your head as you step back, and Tim follows you inside, closing the door softly.
“Did your parents come over?” he asks.
“Yeah,” you answer, laughing humorlessly. “They were here.”
“Hey,” Tim says. You hold the back of your chair and stare at the table again. “Hey,” he repeats firmly. “Look at me.”
You turn your chin toward him, your eyes glassy and your skin blotchy.
“You’re okay,” he promises, spreading his hands with his palms toward you. “Whatever they said, whatever they made you believe, it’s a lie. Your parents are… they’re abusive.”
“They just-”
“Crossed a line,” Tim interrupts. “I see it every time you mention them. I don’t know what they said or did, but if it brought you here, they are the problem. Not you.”
You rub your chest, failing to lessen the pressure there before Tim steps toward you. When you don’t stop him, he lays his hand on your shoulder.
“What if they’re right?” you whisper, leaning into his touch.
Tim looks between your eyes, then says, “What if my dad was right?”
Your eyes clear as you look at Tim. His question, his vulnerability, brings you back into this moment. Tim is here because he saw something in you. Despite his gruff exterior, he cares about you. And now he’s sharing something about himself to help you. To save you.
“My dad was abusive,” he says. “He shoved my head through plaster, yelled at me, belittled me, made me doubt myself and all that I could do. You? You’re stronger than you think, stronger than your parents make you feel. You are not what or who they say.”
“Then why am I like this?” you wonder.
“There is nothing wrong with you,” Tim repeats, his thumb brushing kindly, comfortingly over your shoulder.
“They…” you begin. “Their voices are in my head constantly, and it’s so loud.”
“They talk with razors on their tongue just to provoke your combat, use new weapons to snap those final strings just to watch you fall back,” Tim replies. “I get it. Their voices, their lies, they follow you everywhere because they’ve ingrained them into you.”
“How do you do it?” you ask, wiping the tears from your face. “How do you do everything that you do, and do it well and confidently, after going through it?”
“You know who you are and what you can do. Place your confidence and your belief in that, not the words they yell trying to make themselves feel like they’re better than you.”
“I don’t think I can do that, Tim,” you argue, shaking your head as you sink into your chair.
“Then shut them up, drown them out, listen to me,” Tim encourages, moving with you. “Whatever it takes.”
“I don’t think it’s that easy. I’m not as strong as you Tim.”
“You’re stronger,” he insists. “And I’m here for you. You’re not alone, okay?”
You nod, willing yourself to believe him. Tim takes your hand, and when your sleeve shifts, he sees the bruise forming around your wrist. Without hesitation, he pushes the fabric up to your elbow, revealing the darkening patch and angry red scratch marks.
“They touched you?” he asks, his voice different than before as he stares at your arm.
“Yes,” you whisper.
“Was it the first time?”
“I…”
Tim releases your hand as he stands. Your unwillingness to answer was better confirmation than he would have received if you had said yes. Tim moves toward the door, on his way to leaving you alone. Again.
“Tim,” you call, your voice strained as tears well in your eyes once more.
He slows, his hand on the doorknob. “They touched you.”
“Please,” you plead.
“I can make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
“Tim, please don’t leave me,” you whisper, fresh tears running down your face, the salt stinging your raw skin.
He sighs, turning toward you. As he returns to your side, he makes a promise to himself. No one will ever hurt you like this again. He let his dad impact his life for years after he moved away from home. When his dad got sick, it felt as if a strong current was pulling him into the nightmare his dad created all over again. If your parents are so willing to take you for granted, to hurt you, then Tim Bradford will be at your side to stop them from damaging you.
You’re not alone. As long as Tim is breathing, you never will be.
