The only times he uses the laser pistol are when he can't get close enough to an enemy or there's too many of them. Other than that, knives are his go-to weapon.

I didn't know about romancing companions until last month. It just never occurred to me that would even be an option. My number one favorite thing to do when I was younger was wander around the wasteland with dogmeat or Codsworth so I didn't even take people as companions lol.
