Lost and Found

Summary: What do you do when your whole world comes crashing down around you? When everything you loved turns out to be a lie? When your fiancé tells you he’s been having an affair, you feel like your whole world comes crashing down, but then you find an antiques shop and the strange man that runs the shop helps you slowly rebuild your life and realise maybe not everything about you is broken.

Authors Note: Here’s a fluffly, but also angsty piece with antique shop owner Jin. It has a happy ending so don’t be put off by the fact it’s centred around an affair, but if that is a trigger for you please do not read. I hope you’re all doing ok and that you enjoy reading this! 

“I’m having an affair,” a few words muttered into a dark room but they cut through you like ice.

You ignore them the first time, still half asleep and unsure if you’re dreaming or if they were just a figment of your imagination. Hoping you had misheard. But the second time they’re said you can’t ignore them.  

“I’m having an affair,” it’s said slightly louder, more certain, in a way that you know is meant for your ears.

You twist, turning so that you are lay looking at your fiancé, not caring that the duvet bunches uncomfortably around you. Sam is lay on his back, eyes open staring blankly at the ceiling. You don’t say anything and the silence that a few minutes ago felt calm now feels chaotic. There’s a loudness to it that makes you want to scream, but you lay waiting for him to say something, anything, to break the noisy silence. You want him to laugh and say ‘April fools’, but April was months ago. You want him to say it was some sort of test, an experiment to see how you would react. Or some sort of joke he had come up with, a dare his friends had set him. Anything that meant the words weren’t true, because you can’t believe that the man that you are currently staring at, your fiancé, would ever be capable of doing the words he has just said. You were in love, weren’t you? The ring currently sat on your finger would at least imply that.

It was late, and as he usually was, Yoongi was up brewing. How Jin slept through all of the sounds and smells was a mystery to everyone except the merman himself, who knew he was only able to be the white-haired warlock’s roommate because he slept underwater.

So, because it was so late, the pink-tailed merman was fast asleep. Maybe that was why he didn’t notice what happened.

Yoongi knew he should have been more careful. He shouldn’t have picked up the potion before he was ready. But he did. And then it spilled all over his shirt.

“Aishhhh.” The warlock scrambled to reach a counter potion sitting on his shelf, some neutralizer to cancel the effects before-

It was too late. Thick black fur started to sprout on his tummy and claws formed from his fingernails. “Jin!” He tried to shout to his roommate, but the effects were taking place too fast, so the shout came out as more of a yelp as the room grew around him and triangular ears sprouted from his head.

Yoongi looked down at himself and ran over to the mirror. Yep. Just as he had feared. A little black cat with brown eyes was looking back at him. And in this form, he had no way to tell anyone what had happened.

Jin sat in the fountain in the courtyard of Magus, watching the supernatural creatures walking to and from classes about the strange and magical world they lived in. He had the day off, and as he did most days, he sat in the shallow waters, his iridescent pink tail hanging over the edge and a shell-covered mirror gripped in one of his hands.

His irises glimmered as he looked over his reflection, carefully adjusting the soft brown hair on top of his head and rubbing some salt water on the scales on his forehead and cheekbones to make them sparkle. He was hoping, praying that maybe they would catch the glance of a certain-

“Hey there, Ariel.” You sat on the edge of the fountain with two lunches in paper bags. “I brought peanut butter and jelly.”

“Thank you, (Y/N).” He shook the water off of his hand and opened the bag you slid to him. “How was your day?”

“It was okay. Everyone’s talking about that stupid cotillion.” You rolled your eyes and shook your head. Of course, the one person you wanted to go to the dance with didn’t have legs. “I don’t even want to go at this point.”

“You should go. It’ll be fun.”

“What, and leave you in your dorm all alone? Nah. Doesn’t sound like very much fun.” You took a bite of your sandwich, muffling your words. “I could buy a kiddie pool and we could hang out in my dorm. It’s practically a greenhouse in there, so you wouldn’t dry out.”

“Tempting.” He grinned. “Didn’t your mother ever tell you not to mess with sirens?”

A bead of sweat pools at the back of Yoongi’s head, sliding down his neck and into the special black robe he’d adorned. A heavy sigh escapes his throat. He’d probably have to get the robe dry cleaned. Another $10 spent on an item he’d never keep after today, and he knows money had been tight for the last little while. He’d barely been able to squeak by and pay Eunha’s school fees this month, begging his PI for a last-minute raise, who’d reluctantly acquiesced, knowing Yoongi was graduating soon anyway.

Yoongi resists the urge to scratch the itch that popped up mere moments ago and has now bloomed into a painful nuisance. Why were these outfits so damn scratchy? He’d never understand it.

“Appa,” his ears perk up at the small voice, the tiny hand clutching his own, and his fingers wind tighter around Eunha’s. “I have to go to the bathroom.”
