okay I gotta share my thoughts on this because you brought it up in the tags re: running the risk of Bill's background coming across ass "oppressed person goes too far and is the real bad guy" because tbh I think it's a risk you can run into wether or not you hc Bill as irregular considering triangles weren't dealt the best cards either and there's something to think about how Bill doesn't care about norms while having grown up in the dystopia that is Flatland. Anyway, my point is I do mostly see the implications that come with him being from Flatland as a parallel to Ford who himself was ostricized and personally do also see the emphasis on Bill being selfish. Like I think about how Ford never really stopped caring about other people while Bill burned down his whole world INCLUDING people who were in similarly bad places in life as him anyway yeah I'm normal about him
YES YES YES you get it you get it like, no matter what, bill as a flatlander is gonna run into the trope where it's like "well i agreed that this oppressed person should have rights, but then he started shooting puppies :/" just because the canon end to "bill is a flatlander" is "bill killed every other flatlander except kryptos because kryptos is his silly rabbit including ones who would have undoubtably been so much worse off than him." the most privileged he could have been is a perfectly regular equilateral from a "good family line" who owned some sort of business and that's still part of the acute rabble, and there's no textual evidence that he was even that well off (there's also not any textual evidence he wasn't, to be clear, but it's up in the air. hell, some people even hc him as isosceles, and while i don't, because i think his salesman persona being something he got from his life in flatland and still falls back on is SO juicy, it's still possible! as long as it's in the realm of "was a triangle," SO much about bill's flatland life is up for grabs! the only thing that's solid is he was, at least, near the bottom of the foodchain) anyway i just personally think mildly irregular "repaired" bill who was just "acceptable" enough to make it to adulthood and even be tentatively allowed a (very monitored, very scrutinized) sales career, but still considered a societal Freak fits with a lot of bill's whole deal and fills in a lot of gaps about his relationship with his family, his relationship with his home dimension, and gives a good insight into why flatland brainwashing wouldn't have worked on him, because it's very hard to find any value in a system that automatically sees you as a disposable thing as opposed to a person also "mild" birth defect that shapes and defines every aspect of your life, like... ford parallels (and to a lesser extent, dipper parallels,) are fun! but YES no matter what you headcanon bill's life in flatland as being like, the end result still boils down to him being wildly childish and selfish. while he runs into the trope by virtue of his social standing no matter what, i think he skirts it at least a little just because he is not the type to care about others, and he clearly doesn't care about any real societal change. he's a nuanced selfish bastard, sure, but a selfish bastard bill and ford are both weird little societal freaks, but despite what the world threw at ford, he never stopped caring about others, even at his worst. bill on the other hand, at what could have been his best, (at whatever turned him into a god with more power than any flatlander had ever had,) killed everyone he'd ever known and even those he didn't. ford got a taste of insane power and, once he was lucid enough to realize the implications of it, was terrified of the way it could hurt others. bill got a taste of insane power and burned a damaged world into a crisp instead of doing literally anything else anyway yeah i'm also really normal about bill
DO YOU KNOW WHAT SPAWNED YOUR EXISTENCE?
[ID: Two lineless, digital paintings, both with warm, dark gray backgrounds. Both canvases are shaped like exact squares.
Painting one shows an adult Bill Cipher, a bright yellow triangle with a top hat, bow tie, cane, singular eye, and long lashes, reaching out to shake hands with the Axolotl, a pink axolotl with an electric blue tail. Bill is looking at the Axolotl casually, and his outstretched hand is engulfed in blue flames, while the Axolotl is smiling at Bill gently, reaching out to take his hand. There are stylized stars, similar to sparkles, in the top right and bottom lefthand corners of the painting. The painting is textured so that you can see the gray of the canvas very faintly through the brush strokes.
Painting two consists mostly of a short passage from Edwin Abbott Abbot's Flatland, written in light gray over the dark background. The passage is the beginning of chapter 7, and reads as follows:
"7. Concerning Irregular Figures
I for my part have never known and Irregular who was not also what Nature evidently intended him to be-- a hypocrite, a misanthropist, and, up to the limits of his power, a perpetrator of all manner of mischief..."
Below the quote, near the very bottom of the page, is a tiny illustration of a very young Bill Cipher. He is drawn completely in grayscale, and is looking down at the ground angrily, fists clenched. He is wearing a pauper's cap and has bandages wrapped around his rightmost angle, which is noticeably longer and more acute than his other angles.

reignited gravity falls hyperfixation again and thinking about how much bill is my favorite character but NOT in the sexyman way. i love the fact that hes fucking non-euclideanly insane and clearly enjoying himself in the most horrific ways like summoning a screaming head and disintegrating it layer by layer or turning someones face inside out. he has the best character design EVER hes just a shape with an eye, triangle bowtie and rectangle top hat and dangly noodles for arms that move around his outline and sometimes hang at 90 degree angles. itās so delightful and relatively unimposing in contrast to how he acts but at the same time it works so well. he has a fantastic sense of humor, hes kind of fruity, his fucking eye can have so many functions. a screen, a projector, a mouth. why would you ever transform this into a bland skinny white guy in a suit when this is what peak perfection looks like for an eldritch character like him
this silly little freak is mr. bungle as a character and i wouldnt have it any other way
bill cipher is such a good design hes just a little guy. hes just fuckin like
the thing i love about bill being a flatlander is that he so clearly hates the fact that he is one but heās also just as clearly still so attached to his dimension, even if he doesnāt realize it. i love that he falls back on being an equilateral salesman in so many of his interactions, that his role in flatland still shapes him so much. i love that he grays out the world when he appears, that he is still associated with monochrome. i love that he builds his physical form over a flat, gray version of himself. i love that he kept kryptos around, even though the guy seems to be from, at the very least, a dimension very similar to billās, if not literally being from billās home dimension. i love that even the way he dresses could be seen as cultural carryovers from growing up in a victorian environment. i love that heās sensitive about people asking if his sides are even. i love that, when he finally gets a shot at a physical form, he basically makes himself a spacelander. i love that he has tried so hard to escape the repressive, oppressive society he grew up in, and that it still seeps through so obviously to anyone who knows even the slightest bit about him
we need to turn bill cipher into a tumblr sillyman the way weāre doing with spamton. enough with the sexyman nonsense hes a little fucking triangle with the personality of eric andre
let him retire. let him be a silly little guy
an observation
Q: Was it fun to shed some light into the backstory between Ford and Bill Cipher and to get a glimpse at the larger threat?
Hirsch: Befriending Bill was the worst mistake Ford ever made. His ego was so seduced by the idea of being āchosenā by a muse that he became Billās biggest fan. Ever wonder why there were so many Bill shaped artifacts in the shack (rug, stained glass, etc.)? Ford was obsessed with this god-like characterās influence on history. Unfortunately for Ford, this āgodā was really the devil in disguise. And heās getting ready for Revelations.
Storyboard Bill posting pt 2. Can't get enough of this guy just look at him
THE DELETED SCENE WHERE FORD SPITS INTO BILLS EYE AND THEN HE LICKS IT ??!!
āAn excruciating hunger that I need to feed.ā
(Forgot to post this here- sry never active here)
Just got diagnosed with this
So much of Bill's character gets enhanced if you look into his lore including the comedy potential. This guy was literally just some bug-sized paper-thin shape person and now he has beef with every other deity/immortal being in the multiverse. Time Baby? Implied that they have past beef with each other and tried to kill each other during Weirdmageddon. The Oracle? Extremely determined to see Bill get taken down and gave Ford a strong hand in it. The Axolotl? Actually genuinely seems to want the best for Bill but he still has one-sided beef with them. He writes in Journal 3 about how they cannot stop his apocalypse plans meanwhile they're literally just existing like "this guy is going to call for my help in thirty years and then I'll show him the joys of compassion š"
#uuuuuH SOURCE?? #Bill
Thinks about Alex Hirsch calling Bill Cipher "kind of a spoiled brat" because he experienced a lot of little frustrations in his lifetime that piled up. Thinks about how this likely means Bill feels entitled to do whatever he wants no matter what because he grew up in a restrictive world. Thinks about how Bill thinks morality is limiting. Thinks about how Bill always hurts people and even takes enjoyment out of it. Thinks about the two lines in "It's Gonna Get Weird" suggesting he doesn't really consider himself 'evil'. Thinks about him framing both the destruction of his dimension and Weirdmageddon in a positive light a few times.
He doesn't care that he does awful things and despite all his apparent means-to-an-end mindset he still probably knows he's wrong deep down because burning his dimension is something that hurt him and he still regrets but he's so caught up in his own justifications and anger do you get it

thinking about this bit again
ALEX: iām trying to think of thisāitās a hard question cause itās like, thereās this weird thing, like, in fan communities where they just- they really desperately want to turn everything into benedict cumberbatch or jack skellington. like... you draw a dog and theyāre like āwhat if that dog was dressed in a top hat and tails and was seducing somebody and had high cheekbones and looked like hannibalā and itās like it doesnāt matter-
DANA: who is also half a deer. for some reason
ALEX: yeah itās like, whether itās a man or a woman or a circle or a square or a piece of paper or a log, people will be like āhow can we make it fuckable?ā and so like everyone wants bill, whoās just this obnoxious little dork, to be somehow just like this suave and handsome dream lothario, which is totally in no way connected to his personality whatsoever. so like, you know, that stuff.... when i see it iām like āsure go nuts have funā but when people are like āis this it?? is this bill?ā iām like.. itās not.. itās not the bill i created. itās your own original character. so go nuts. so like, when i try to think of human bill itās just so bizarre to me because.... the whole joke is that heās this dumb little illuminati triangle with a top hat and like mr. peanut arms and legs
fr though how did people see this small little triangle guy and make him a suave tall lanky twink grown man in coattails?? seriously? even considering the little arm movements he does here? youre gonna go with that? i hate you all so much
ok i want to talk about billford for a second. thereās something to be said about it.
for the record NO i donāt ship it. but i do think iād be missing out on crucial characterization if i didnāt bring this up, that in canon, it looks like ford has somewhat of a crush on bill by the way he talks about him in his journal and the memorabilia he collects (until he learns he was used to build a portal). crushes donāt have to be sexual NOR romantic in nature of course, they can be of a platonic type. wanting to get to know someone really deeply or spend a lot of time with them. ford obviously smitten with this knowledgeable omniscient dream creature. to ford bill felt more than just āa friendā but the feeling of was, of course, not mutual. bill played along and made him feel special so he could stick around to build that portal for himāthe one heās tried with like countless people throughout history. however i do think bill was surprised by fordās competence which made him stick out more than the others to great surprise
i think this dynamic is interesting, but because it is unhealthy i donāt like saying i ship it. i donāt think this is a good relationship and almost all the content is not what iām looking for when i want to see these two interacting. i donāt want to see them make out. i want to see how ford, for how smart he is, got so carried away by having his ego stroked by a little guy. i want to put him in a lab and study him. he literally just met this triangle by reciting transciptions from caveman art that told him not to read it aloud and somehow goes all in with his coins on bill and trusts him with his entire being despite just meeting him and the warnings written in the cave. and he is played like a fucking Sucker. i want to see what bill thinks from his point of view and what he did to keep milking the hell out of fordās time, resources, and trust.
but iām just. not a fan of how much emphasis is put on a sexual interpretation of the relationship in the fandom or the fact that the abusive aspects are brushed aside or romanticized which is why i donāt want to say āiām a fan of this shipā.
you know how ao3 has āX / Yā to mean ship and āX & Yā to mean gen character relationship? i find the dynamic fascinating in the sense of the latter. i did see that ford wanted intimacy with bill because of his little fanboy crush but i dont believe it was literally sexual or romantic intimacy, it was psychological intimacy. bill isnāt a stone wall when it comes to this type of mental intimacy (in fact he loves pushing peopleās psychological boundaries and making them uncomfortable a la eric andre) but he is deceptive of his true motives. as someone with a special interest in psychology itās a fascinating dynamic to watch unfold from a detached perspective.
it feels like that episode of pretty good by jon bois where he talks about how he watches people playing poker because āitās like watching someone elseās nightmareā. itās a car crash waiting to happen watching this smart idiot betting it all in (his trust and psychological intimacy) and losing his sanity to a little triangle.

bill cipher has adhd. aaand post
A reminder!
God I love the 'Blames the arson for the fire' line. I don't know if this is the right interpretation or what, but to me, it reads like Bill blames to destruction of his home dimension on everything that lead him to destroy it. The constricting rules and regulations, the fact that he felt so trapped as a result...
Blame everything but his own actions. And to shift that blame, he has to...well, we know.

A/N: I found this among my drafts, and I thought I may as well post it. It was written before Journal 3 came out, obviously enough, but I still like the idea. Canāt promise frequent updates - I still have a lot of details to work out - and I canāt rule out running out of steam, but hereās what I have so far. Also watch out for mentions of alcohol abuse and, generally, Bill being bad news for Fordās mental health. And also just plainly bad news.

āNot that itās any of my business, buddy, but why on earthāā
āAs you said just now, it is none of your business.ā
The man tilted his head as though to concede the point, and didnāt press the matter any further: all he did was busying himself counting the money once more - a large wad of cash that was most of what remained of Fordās grant for research. Still, he didnāt mind parting from it. It would be put to good use. The only thing that mattered right then was keeping Bill Cipher out of his mind. Keeping Bill out of their world as well would come easier once he had achieved that, wouldnāt it?
Wouldnāt it?
