WILHELM + SIMON YOUNG ROYALS | 3.06
director: “as soon as i saw them together i knew it was them” 😭😭😭😭😭
Excellent points! Definitely got me thinking. I'm wondering now, too, if that scene might have been there to show us just how low he was truly feeling -- similar to the conversation he had with August during the party, about his brother's death. That he was doing so poorly, the amount of high & drunk he was at the party was not enough. He needed to lose himself & potentially even try to punish himself through this level of intoxication.
Maybe he was even subconsciously using this as an opportunity to push himself past those inhibitions that were keeping him from (re-)pursuing Simon? Maybe he hoped that if he took more, he'd break down and reach out? So fascinating to examine...
I never noticed this before -- at the end of Wille's first Society meeting when they're putting away their drugs, he grabs some and sneakily tucks them away into his jacket pocket. This can't have been just a throw-away thing. I imagine it will have some significance later on? What do you think?
Simon hated him. He hated that Wilhelm made his skin buzz in a way he had not felt in years, had not even considered. He hated that Wilhelm looked at him with respect and regret and arrogance all at once, daring Simon to look closer, begging him to. Whimpering sheep one moment, biting wolf in the next. He hated that Wilhelm was the personification of everything he stood against, and yet Simon wanted him anyway.

patience is such a compelling dynamic in relationships sorryyy it’s the peak of romance to me
"Be the first who ever did."
Wilhelm and Simon- Cinnamon Girl, Lana Del Rey
One example of how we are primed to empathize with Wille is that when Simon stands his ground and doesn’t accept the terms the monarchy puts on him. Wille lies to him, lies to the whole world basically throwing Simon under the bus regarding the leaked sex tape. And then wants Simon back to unconditionally love him on Willes terms. But a lot of people still only empathize with Wille and claim Simon is selfish when he is the one standing up for himself and against the monarchy first. The one actually standing up to the system. Wille says “I can be free” showing he can get out of the system but not questioning the system. Finally he stands up for Simon and himself, questioning the traditions within the system but please give Simon a better arc so we can sympathize and understand the ones outside the system better. Get his points of view and consequences for him. If Simon would have agreed to the terms of the system, Wille would not have learned and not questioned them. Simon is also a hero in this story.
