“Bad guys don’t deserve to be redeemed” is a boring plot mindset and it’s cancelled forever.

Show me bad guys that think it’s too late to turn their life around, and then turn it around. Show me bad guys that think they’ll never be loved because of the things they’ve done and then give them love and support that makes them feel like it’s worth it to change. Show me bad guys who are bitter, hold grudges, lash out at people, and then make them realize that this Isn’t Working and want more out of their life. Show me bad guys that ask the good guys for help!!

The “villain gets what’s coming to him and is never seen or heard from again” trope is old and played. I want to hear from them again. I want them to ask the good guys to drive them to their first therapy appointment. I want them to struggle through apologies, not because they’re too proud to say “I’m sorry” bc tbh that trope can die too, but because they can’t find the words to make things better and it makes it feel pointless to try.

Make it hard! Make it hurt! Make them question who they are and if change is possible and make them find out that they can be more than the destructive thoughts and behavior they’ve adapted! Make them learn that having bad thoughts doesn’t make you a bad person, and you can choose which thoughts and desires you entertain and act upon. Let the choice to ignore bad thoughts and focus on positive ones become easier over time. And let them feel proud of themselves for it!

Real people struggle with these issues every day and right now the social message is that if you fuck up, you’re scum and you deserve to suffer and you’ll never be more than scum. Real people need to know that you can’t undo the damage of things you’ve done, but you can be better in the future. Real people need to know that you’re not pigeonholed into being a Bad Guy for the rest of your life because you’re a Bad Guy right now.

Nobody “deserves” to be redeemed, it isn’t about “deserving” redemption, it’s about working your ass off not to keep hurting people because you can.

THIS. THIS IS WHY V IS COOL AND THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH HIM

Still think that was one of the best ways to develop Vergil's character, nice move CAPCOM 😉

About V

image

Guys i Know you loved V… I loved him too.

But you guys are not understanding what he is. He is not a wasted character… He is Vergil! It’s a side of Vergil that we could never have meet if he haven’t pushed to be separeted with the Yamato.

A side that himself forget. That is why V was mysterious and calm, because this parte of Vergil that was ignored by him, that he never payed to much attention because his life was rough and he did not had reason for it. Putting Everything that V was as something he just wated to get hid of, wich he actually did.

When V and “Urizen” are back together Vergil absorves all the feelings he had suppressed to the point of almost oblivion. Through the eyes of V he sees Dante it still that crazy guy and Nero as a decent person.

That is why he wants to fight Dante fairy, because his proud makes him desire a good fight with his rival/brother. A proud he losted when he created V. And that is why he thanks Nero, because the boy helped him found himself.

Nero helped V… Nero helped Vergil.

image

During the fight with Dante he says that Nero means nothing to him, but as soon as the battle stops the way his voice sounds unsure when he asks… “Nero’s my son?” Well he looks like he can’t belive unil once again he remembers the past/emotions that he had forgot?supressed even before creating V. Vergil actually stops for a while, and smile… Probabilly it was a happy memory.

The fight with Nero was to see if his son was like him, making the same mistakes, having the same doubts. Vergil lost because at that moment Nero’s motivation was the stronger one and at the same time he was trying to know his son.

For a Warrior like him the best way to know someone was through fight.

In the end Vergil already wannet to cut the stupid tree, and go straigh to the point to work with Dante like if was meant to be. Like it was a every day thing, he protected Nero from following him  both punched the boy at the same time without talking, or looking at each other. They just had the conection back at full speed.

Vergil’s true grown come afther V. After the gets himself back.

This is showed at the moment that he and Dante are being real brothers killing demons. And challenging each other without the intention of killing, only fight because Dante and Vergil like that… And they are seriously good at that. Maybe that’s what Dante always wannet him to see.

The poetry books that he leaves to Nero is like a promise that he will try to go back. Because Nero actually holds the books and he knows that will be a next time for him to see his father.

V is the ultimate narrative tool to make Vergil the best that Vergil can be.

Because he is much better then a hungry power antagonist!

He is a brother, a father, he is a fucking Warrior.

Excuse you??

Where in DMC did you find military? Like if someone has a gun then it's military themed by default??? What?? Have you even like seen any cutscenes from dmc 1? A lone guy running around some random gothic horror castle fighting living puppets and shadows? No?

Even more so, expecting political commentary from action games in 2001? Are you nuts? It was still wild times when those games were made mostly for enjoyment and thrill and noone expected any kind of deep narrative or philosophy from them. It's not cinema, it's no art, not yet. So no political commentary, just a cool guy killing mindless demons for players fun.

The DMC always was about family drama where there's no place for grander things like fucking politics, especially US politics as DMC has nothing to do with irl America at all. Even newer entries has 0 politics and 100 family melodrama and character study. And demon killing ofc. Demons never were some kind of relatable or even distantly humane beings in the series fyi. That's the whole point of personal conflicts for Dante and Vergil as halfbloods. Even when the human blood was revealed to be a cool upgrade material for demons (in dmc 5, and that's a first for the series and it's reaaally big stretch from me to even find this theme) even then it wasn't the point or really important for literally anyone. Because, you guessed it, the family drama.

AMERICAN POLITICS? IN MY DEVIL MAY CRY??!!??
