Still Life with Cauldron 18″ x 24″ oil on linen 2017
i can see him years from now & he’s gonna be a monster a six-pack of beer & some young thing on the passenger’s side, a remnant of the high-school years spent hands-first & always smiling i can see it in the glint of his grin each time someone wears a skirt to class, the lick of his lips like a starving wolf, the hands, flexed & always waiting still i am quiet. still i am letting his want become necessity, his hunger become devour devour devour his hands are on me & i’m not saying no his hands are on her & she’s saying no & he’s not listening he swears we always said we liked it, he swears he never understood & maybe he didn’t maybe he was raised to hear no & think try me, to raise fists in response to noncompliance, to see softness & think first of prey. this is not to say he is not at fault, just that he is not alone. just that we have made a monster & no one is stopping him. just that i am only a girl and he is almost every man i know and these words will never be enough.
