Serotonin

Serotonin /ˌsɛrəˈtoʊnɨn/ or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is a monoamine neurotransmitter. Biochemically derived from tryptophan, serotonin is primarily found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, platelets, and in the central nervous system (CNS) of animals and humans. It is popularly thought to be a contributor to feelings of well-being and happiness.

Approximately 90% of the human body's total serotonin is located in the enterochromaffin cells in the alimentary canal (gut), where it is used to regulate intestinal movements. The remainder is synthesized in serotonergic neurons of the CNS, where it has various functions. These include the regulation of mood, appetite, and sleep. Serotonin also has some cognitive functions, including memory and learning. Modulation of serotonin at synapses is thought to be a major action of several classes of pharmacological antidepressants.

In humans, serotonin levels are affected by diet. An increase in the ratio of tryptophan to phenylalanine and leucine will increase serotonin levels. Fruits with a high ratio includedates, papayas and bananas. Research also suggests eating a diet rich in carbohydrates and low in protein will increase serotonin by secreting insulin, which helps in amino acid competition.[18] However, increasing insulin for a long period may trigger the onset of insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and lower serotonin levels. Muscles use 12 of the 13 amino acid groups (not using tryptophan), allowing more muscular individuals to produce more serotonin.

Scientists from the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, showed that the brain's serotonin systems in males and females are different. They think they might have found one of the reasons why more women are affected with depression and chronic anxiety than men.

By using a PET scanner, the scientists found that in terms of the number of binding sites for certain parts of the brain, the two sexes are not the same.

They found that females have more of the most common serotonin receptors than men, and lower levels of the protein that carries serotonin back into the nerve cells that secrete serotonin. SSRI antidepressants block this protein.

According to other researchers, an even better way to raise serotonin levels would be to get daily exercise. The most effective way of raising the serotonin level is with vigorous exercise. Studies have shown that serotonin levels are raised with increased activity and the production of serotonin is increased for some days after the activity. This is the safest way of increasing the serotonin level and there are numerous benefits to be gained by regular exercise. In observing these findings, there is a basic understanding of serotonin and its functions. Serotonin is recognized as a very important neurotransmitter that has a profound effect on many aspects of behavior. Extensive research has been done, and is being continued, on the complex mechanisms by which serotonin operates. The most useful outcome of such studies is the introduction of pharmaceutical agents into the medical community. New studies are conducted everyday to learn more about the exact nature of serotonin and its widespread use throughout the human body.

Serotonin levels change with the seasons - serotonin transporter protein, a brain chemical that lowers serotonin levels around brain cells, is more active during the winter months - meaning that serotonin levels are lower. Researchers from the University of Toronto and the Medical University of Vienna believe that this mechanism explains why some people feel miserable during the winter.

There are many researchers who believe that an imbalance in serotonin levels may influence mood in a way that leads to depression. Possible problems include low brain cell production of serotonin, a lack of receptor sites able to receive the serotonin that is made, inability of serotonin to reach the receptor sites, or a shortage in tryptophan, the chemical from which serotonin is made. If any of these biochemical glitches occur, researchers believe it can lead to depression, as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, panic, and even excess anger.

Functionally, serotonin is associated with sleep, fatigue, anxiety, fear, apathy, low self-esteem, body temperature, anger, violence, agression, suicidal attempts and the overall mood.

Optimum levels of serotonin in the brain is essential to maintain a feeling of well-being.
