There’s A Portrait Of Cedric Diggory In The Hufflepuff Common Room.

there’s a portrait of cedric diggory in the hufflepuff common room.

nobody knows who painted it. the other houses speculate, but the hufflepuffs know not to ask, because that’s not really what’s important.

it’s one of the moving ones, of course. sometimes cedric isn’t in it - it’s said that the portrait has a twin, over amos diggory’s fireplace, and cedric always loved his father. but he’s there enough, smiling down at the hufflepuffs who congregate in the common room, watching them as they go about their lives.

the portrait is by the door, next to one of the overstuffed yellow chairs. students sit there to talk to cedric, with some modicum of privacy. at first, it was his friends, the people who knew him and miss him and love him. but as time went on it became those who knew him by reputation. kids seeking advice, help with homework. someone to talk to, on a long and cold night. gradually, he became a legend, spoke in hushed whispers to the first-years as they came in. if you’re ever in trouble, talk to cedric. he’ll always help you.

after the battle of hogwarts, when the furniture was mended and the new students hesitantly made their way in, there was another portrait next to it, of hufflepuff’s favoured daughter. tonks, known by one name only, blew painted bubbles from her world of acrylic and canvas. while students came to cedric for help and advice, they came to tonks to ask questions. she would tell the most wicked stories, and some of them were even true. when someone needed cheering up, when they were wanting to brainstorm their next epic prank, they went to tonks.

she wasn’t always there, either. another portrait above a cot, where a baby with shocking blue hair could look at it and laugh. but when she was, she was always happy to have people come to her. when they did, it felt like she wasn’t just paint and canvas. she felt alive.

hufflepuffs look after their own, you see. dead or alive.

Solve Mysteries As A Gang Of Cats In This Open World Game

“I don’t know if you’ve heard, but everybody wants to be a cat. Apparently a cat’s the only cat who knows where it’s at, see. With that in mind, I don’t think there have been nearly enough video games that let us play as felines.”

Clearly, this is a sentiment the developers of new indie title Peace Island have taken to heart, as the open world game is all about you taking on the role of a cat to solve mysteries and uncover the secrets of the missing humans. There’s not one part of that sentence I didn’t enjoy.

Peace Island is the work of creator Eric Blumrich and a small team of devs, which apparently includes alumni from Prune and a little-known title called Grand Theft Auto V. The game’s Patreon page describes it as “an open-world, story-driven adventure game, currently under development for the PC, Mac, and Oculus VR system.”

The developers promise an ambitious sounding mix of science fiction, alternative history, and mystery, as players take control of the nine cats who live on the island, after waking up to find their human companions have vanished.

Peace Island will forgo combat in favour of an experience that focuses on puzzle solving, discovery, and exploration – so expect a title more in the vein of The Witness, but with cats. It also sounds as if we’ll be able to experience ” multiple divergent storylines” as we approach the “ultimate decision” – are the humans worth bringing back?

The Hunt Chapter 6

“He’s dead. There’s nothing left of him.” Alex frowned. Katherine held her tightly, trying to console her girlfriend. “Why didn’t you try to stop them?” She whispered.

“Are you talking to me?” Katherine frowned. Alex ignored her, refusing to look at her. She continued to talk to herself. “Alex.. Snap out of it.” Katherine shook Alex slighty, trying to break the hold she had on herself. “Hey!” Katherine slapped Alex’s face lightly, causing her to jump at the sudden feeling.

“I’m so sorry…” Alex whispered.

“Sorry to say - she deserved it.”

Harvard Has A Pigment Library That Stores Old Pigment Sources, Like The Ground Shells Of Now-extinct

Harvard has a pigment library that stores old pigment sources, like the ground shells of now-extinct insects, poisonous metals, and wrappings from Egyptian mummies, to preserve the origins of the world’s rarest colors.

image

A few centuries ago, finding a specific color might have meant trekking across the globe to a mineral deposit in the middle of Afghanistan. “Every pigment has its own story,” Narayan Khandekar, the caretaker of the pigment collection, told Fastcodesign. He also shared the stories of some of the most interesting pigments in the collection.

image

Mummy Brown

“People would harvest mummies from Egypt and then extract the brown resin material that was on the wrappings around the bodies and turn that into a pigment. It’s a very bizarre kind of pigment, I’ve got to say, but it was very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.”

image

Cadmium Yellow

“Cadmium yellow was introduced in the mid 19th century. It’s a bright yellow that many impressionists used. Cadmium is a heavy metal, very toxic. In the early 20th century, cadmium red was introduced. You find these pigments used in industrial processes. Up until the 1970s, Lego bricks had cadmium pigment in them.”

Annatto “The lipstick plant—a small tree, Bixa orellana, native to Central and South America—produces annatto, a natural orange dye. Seeds from the plant are contained in a pod surrounded with a bright red pulp. Currently, annatto is used to color butter, cheese, and cosmetics.”

image

Lapis Lazuli “People would mine it in Afghanistan, ship it across Europe, and it was more expensive than gold so it would have its own budget line on a commission.”

Dragon’s Blood “It has a great name, but it’s not from dragons. [The bright red pigment] is from the rattan palm.”

image

Cochineal “This red dye comes from squashed beetles, and it’s used in cosmetics and food.”

Emerald Green “This is made from copper acetoarsenite. We had a Van Gogh with a bright green background that was identified as emerald green. Pigments used for artists’ purposes can find their way into use in other areas as well. Emerald green was used as an insecticide, and you often see it on older wood that would be put into the ground, like railroad ties.”
