Iāve seen people complain about the finale but I loved it. It felt so suitable to flash forward, I was so hoping for it to happen, otherwise the ending wouldnāt have been satisfying. After all friends promising not to lose touch, it was only fitting to see how that worked out.
Itās not a new concept to skip a few years in the story to show how a friend group fell apart. However, OMB did it well. The āfutureā felt realistic and we didnāt see too much of it, so that the interest for the next season would be high. That is good storytelling.
I hope they start off the next season two years later, and maybe show a few flashbacks. I assume something will bring the ex-friends together, and itād be cool to see their new dynamic especially since theyāre older.
Monse leaving Freeridge and moving on with new girlfriends was expected and isnāt necessarily bad as sheās also away from the streets now and sh*t that no teenager should go through. Although Monse was certainly the glue of the group which could be seen even in 1x01 (with Monse away Cesar left the group), so itās natural for everyone to stop being friends without her.
I think Jamal was looking for a place where he could release all his energy that he used to spent on conspiracies, and maybe after looking death in the eye in S3, playing football didnāt seem so scary anymore. Apparently, he even turned out to be actually good at it just like his dad.
I was surprised, yet very pleased, to see Ruby and Jasmine going strong after two years. Thank you! Thatās exactly what we need: healthy long-lasting relationships!
Oscar fulfilling his dream to have a family and leave the gang was probably the most wholesome ending. It was so satisfying to see him happy. And I hope he stays that way from now on. Please donāt hurt him.
At last, Cesar also had an expected conclusion to his journey. To put aside the sad reality of his life now (like it was easy before), if we solely judge from the entertainment value this choice is great, as weāll get to see Cesar as a leader and hopefully more mature.
shows to watch if you loved IANOWT
Desperately need another season of I Am Not Okay with This? Hereās 5 shows to enjoy while you wait for season 2 announcement!
1. The End of the F***ing World
Okay, itās an obvious one, given that itās the same creators behind both shows. Itās even been stated that both stories take place in the same universe. Nonetheless, if you havenāt seen TEOTFW yet, what are you waiting for? Thereāre a lot of resemblances between characters, many parallels, and the show overall gives off a very familiar vibe. Relatable angsty teenagers, love, friendship, blood and crime. The only thing missing is perhaps superpowers.
2. Sex education
This show can totally fill the void in your heart left by ianowt. Sex education is an homage to John Hughesā films. Thatās why just like with ianowt at first youāre not sure whether the show is set in modern times or in the 80s. You can expect to see a lot of bright clothing, high school clichĆ©s, beautiful friendships, well rounded characters. Besides, the show has amazing lgbtq+ representation, well written poc characters, actual female empowerment. This show is definitely everything our generation needs. Not to mention, it is hilarious.
3. Everything sucks
This show unfortunately wonāt entertain you for long as it was canceled after one season. However, if you want to watch a wlw relationship, this oneās for you. Itās a coming of age show, set in the 90s, about nerds and theatre kids coming together, and trying to figure out themselves and their place in the world.
4. Freaks and Geeks
Well, this is an underrated classic about outcasts in the 80s, that was also unfairly canceled after one season run. The plot is right there in the title. You follow the lives of Sam and his geeky friends, and his older sister Lindsay whoās trying to fit in with cool misfits. Ultimately, itās a story about growing up (shocker), battling social norms and searching for your identity.
5. Stranger Things
With the same people producing both shows itās no wonder they get compared. Stranger things has the same throwback aesthetic, although that might have something to do with the fact ST is actually set in the 80s. And even though scenery is what can attract ianowt audience to this show, the most evident similarity would have to be the girl with super powers. So if you liked ianowt for the supernatural aspect, stranger things has to be first on your watch list.
1. PANIC on amazon prime
i watched āpanicā at the very beginning of 2022, and have since rewatched it twice. iām still surprised how it stuck with me and became one of my favorite shows, because typically i prefer more light-hearted stories.Ā
the idea of teenagers playing this high stakes life-threatening game is so intriguing. the mystery behind who started and runs this tradition adds so much suspense. thereās also the additional layer of poverty and family issues thatās pushing the main character. itās so interesting to explore the charactersā motivations, their reactions to pressure. it makes for a colorful complex story. and, of course, what sells it is the main romance. the chemistry between the characters is off the charts!! (not me thinking i wouldnāt ship them before seeing the show phaha).Ā
even though āpanicā was cancelled after season 1 (which, sadly, is true for most of my favorite tv shows), i believe thereās a satisfying finality to the season that makes it work as a stand alone story.
2. QUEER AS FOLK on peacock
pure queer joy is what this show is. iāve only experienced this level of happiness while watching āgenera+ionā (which is my favorite show ever). and yes, āqueer as folkā is more adult because - duh - itās about adults, and one teen character. in a lot of ways itās about forming your community and keeping it safe. it takes on serious issues, the characters are messy and make mistakes, yet it feels so warm and comfortable, like a home.
iāve never seen the original show so iām judging this show from a non-reboot perspective (which iām pretty sure it is anyway, even though you can make parallels between some characters, itās a new different story).Ā Ā
trigger warning: thereās a mass sh**ting scene in the first episode (itās not very graphic).
3. HEARTBREAK HIGH on netflix
the new aussie it show, move over h2o just add water! okay iām joking, but heartbreak high really took over the world as it should have! itās a diverse well-written gen z teen drama with amazing fashion.Ā
what you can expect: a lot of dramaaa, secrets & unexpected twists, sex scenes that donāt sexualize teenagers, actual ace representation (iāve only seen it done this well in āgenera+ionā), probably the best autistic representation iāve ever seen, exploration of some dark themes (assault, police brutality) that are unfortunately a part of reality for a lot of teenagers, beautiful friendships and romantic relationships, teen angst and rebellion.
i fell in love with these characters and their dynamics, i canāt wait for season 2! plus, it turns out there was a lot of australian things i didnāt know about, so it was very cool to see australian culture represented in this fun bright series.Ā
4. REBELDE on netflix
look at all these pretty faces and tell me you donāt want to know more about them. this show is one hell of a fun ride. itās like elite mixed with violetta. thereās so much colorful potential in almost (looking at you esteban) all of these characters. they fight, they perform, theyāre friends, rivals and lovers, and for the big moments theyāre each otherās family. theyāre rebelde. i want to steal their wardrobe and be their groupie.
5. WEDNESDAY on netflix
not suprised this show became such a hit, but iām glad i watched it when it came out without any preconceived expectations. the style of this show is amazing and itās an entertaining watch. there canāt be enough praise for jenna ortegaās performance. sheās outstanding in everything she does, and she carried this show.
6. HEARTSTOPPER on netflix
this is a fluffy warm ball of sunshine. comfort at its finest. iām so happy this show exists and people talk about it. i just want to give every character a hug. oh, and i want those cute doodles in my life.Ā
7. THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY on amazon prime
such a cute summer show. i think the creators did a great job of adapting the book for the modern young audience. it couldāve easily turned into another kissing booth with aĀ ānot like other girlsā protagonist. even though you can see the original outline of the characters, they feel more evoled in the show. and thatās what i hope will happen to the story later on as well. i like when adaptations improve on given material and find their own identity.Ā
i didāt really like nor understood the ending so iām kinda tense about season 2. if itās gonna turn into a belly x conrad love show, iām gonna have to head out, and demand a jeremiah spin off (#teamjeremiah).Ā
8. SINGLE DRUNK FEMALE on freeform
so this is one of the more underrated shows on this list. itās a dramedy that follows a young woman battling her addiction in a town full of people who are right there to remind her why she drinks. sam makes quite an appealing lead character. sheās messy, sheās selfish, sheās confrontational, but she longs for real meaningful connections, even though sheās afraid of them. thereās a diverse array of characters who go on this journey with her, and i love every single one of them. i think this show has a very good trailer actually, helps get the feel of the show and what itās about.
9. DOLLFACE on hulu
such a beautiful entertaining show about female friendship and finding yourself outside of a relationship. the cast is incredible, including kat dennings as the jilted ex, brenda song and shay mitchell as her estranged besties, matthew gray goobler as a love interest, and brianne howey and lilly singh as a nice bonus on the side.Ā
the part that makes this show so unique is the daydream sequences that follow the main character. it shifts the rules of the world, makes it more fantastic and unpredictable. makes me wish i could get on a bus with the cat lady that would take me to my friends.
10. HEATHERS on amazon prime
no matter how much you like the original movie, THIS heather squad is way more memorable and charismatic. who wouldnāt want to watch an edgy dark comedy about teen phychopaths whose whole identity isĀ āiām not like the other people, iām weird, iām a weirdoā, toxic friendships, murderous romance & tumblr fashion circa 2016? maybe iām just build different if itās my jam and not yours.Ā
seriously though, i unapologetically loved it. kinda reminds me of āthe scream queensā (which is outstanding) and āinsatiableā (which i couldnāt get into).Ā
(i probably missed a couple, that i watched, feel free to add to the list)

im so here for otis & ruby, the relationship makes both characters more interesting and less unbearable, plus they are so much better than maeve & otis, i can actually ship them.
i love cal. i want to see more of them. it was heartbreaking to see the bathrooms aka their safe space being demolished.
since season one adam has been my favorite character (after maeve), and iām so happy to see his development. he makes me go š„ŗ every time heās on screen.
eric and adam are so cute. i really hope they work out.
iām glad isaac told maeve the truth, and while i like isaac i donāt think maeve will be with him. i donāt think maeve needs a love interest this season tbh.
i hope we get an aimee centered episode.

iām really liking maeve with isaac. their scene was so sensual and beautiful.
i just really hope otis and maeve both move on separately like theyāre doing rn, and never get together. i donāt think theyāre right for each other, and theyāre just boring together.

seeing adam happy is everything
proud of maureen for ditching michael
eric third wheeling in the tree house lmao
i feel like this season left everything disheveled, and iām left feeling empty. it felt more like a mid season finale than a season finale. i enjoyed season 3 but i think i prefer season 2.
If for some reason you decided to check out the new Netflix show Emily In Paris, DONāT. Go watch The Devil Wears Prada instead. Itās practically the same thing, only in the latter you actually get good performances and character depth.
Coming into this show I was expecting a cute heart-warming story. 10 minutes in I thought how great it would be to watch a show about a woman figuring out herself and her work life in a new country. And then all my hopes went down the steaming bidet once Gabriel opened his door.
Emily in Paris truly tested my gag reflex, and hereās why.
First of all, the premise of somebody going to Paris ā āa perfect romantic cityā ā is so overused and unrealistic. Paris sure is pretty but itās also dirty, polluted, and has more than 29 thousand people sleeping in the streets. But of course Emily lives in some parallel universe where Paris is apparently Paradise. Idolization of anything, even a city is harmful. So thisĀ āperfectā Paris is not apreciated.
The Instagram followers ridiculousness. Thereāre actual people whose job is to promote Instagram accounts, you donāt become an influencer overnight by posting a pic of you eating un pain au chocolat (which is just bread with chocolate, stop creaming your pants, Emily).
On top of that, the abundance of French stereotypes is exhausting. Too hard to write complex characters and present actual reasoning for their actions? Donāt bother, just put every French cliche youāve ever heard of.
And that chambre de bonne is just ridiculous. Who knew that maids used to have such big apartments? (By the way, you can see a more realistic room that you could get in Paris in the movie Monte Carlo. Ah, such a good movie.) The creators were going for an aesthetic, thus missed an opportunity to show Emily struggling to adjust to her new life. Itās quite impossible to believe that Emilyās going through a rough time when her life is seemingly perfect, and any inconvenience doesnāt affect her at all.
The ex. Itās very typical to introduce a romantic partner of the protagonist at the start of your story and not give them enough depth, so that the audience doesnāt get attached to them and the inevitable break up brings relief. Now they can root for the protagonist to get together with the planned love interest. Yay.Ā
However, this structure might work for a movie, but when you have 10 episodes to flash out your story and therefore the protagonist, wouldnāt it be better to use this opportunity to develop the secondary characters? Not for their own sake but to develop the main character through them.Ā
Every character you spend some time on should play some important role, right? Otherwise why should weĀ bother watching their scenes. Shouldnāt the current boyfriend of the main lead tell us something about the protagonist? Like, why did the main character choose to be in this relationship, what do they see in their partner and therefore what qualities do they value in people? How do they act in personal relationships? What role does their partner play in their life?
The main character is dull and unrelatable with zero character development. A conventionally attractive privileged white woman whose biggest struggle to overcome is her coworkers not being nice to her straight away. Weāre constantly told that itās hard for Emily to adjust but itās never shown. In fact everything solves itself rather smoothly, carrying no repercussions for her.
With such an unlikable selfish protagonist you find yourself more interested in secondary characters. It actually feels like we get to know Mindy and Camille more. Compared to them, we know nothing about Emilyās family relationships or literally any backstory on her. Who is Emily? Why are we following her? Why should we care? What is her inner conflict? Oh right, she has none. Because by the end of the show she stays the same exact character that we met in the beginning. If Emilyās experience does not influence her at all, why should it matter to the audience? And what is the point of telling this story?
Feminism: the lost potential [episode 3]. āNon, Antoine. Sexism isnāt sexy. Shut the f*ck up.ā Thatād be enough for me from such a bland show. But no, weāre left with an ambiguous conclusion, when Emily doesnāt disagree with Antoineās perception that women enjoy menās unsolicited attention. And then this topic is not discussed again. Thanks for that, Emily in Paris. How about next time (which will hopefully never happen) you either have the bravery to actually speak on the issue and educate people or at least do not cause more damage.
Finally, the most annoying plotline that decidedly ruined the show.Ā Did you ever watch a movie, and thereās a couple that you love, but you feel like somethingās missing? So, you just think āI wish some cheating was involvedā. If you actually do think that sometimes, media content has tricked you into thinking that cheating is sexy and exciting, when itās actually destructive and disgusting. THE CHEATING. Stop normalizing it!!! Enough. It always takes away from a relationship. And weāre tired of seeing it. Give us some healthy couples. And if you think theyāre boring, you just donāt know how to write them. If you get rid of the cheating plotline, the show becomes slightly bearable. Itās still boring and irritating, but at least itās not as problematic.
Anyway. Similarly, to how āEnola Holmesā shouldāve been a series, this show shouldāve been a movie. There was no point of dragging out this ā I want to say ā story. Because nothing happened. Was there a big revelation in the finale, that we were led up to? No. Did Emily learn anything thanks to her ājourneyā? Nope. Was it just 5 hours of her hooking up with unremarkable men who all look the same, while being a terribly arrogant person? You decide.
it just makes sense
1. eva = nora
both form a new friend group after theyāre rejected by their former friends (+ get out of a relationship)
2. noora = fatou
the closest friend of the first season main character. both fall in love with a mean popular kid.
3. isak = ismail
a character outside of the main girl friend group.
4. sana = ava
the bold, outspoken friend of the group, who used to be bullied, and is badly perceived by (some) audience.
Ā Ā Ā The reasons why Aniās character was brought into the story are understandable. Yes, sheās a plot device for Bryceās storyline, and sheās the new narrator. On top of that, sheās supposed to be the audience surrogate. Sheās the new girl coming into this group of kids, and just like us she tries to figure out Bryceās murder and all the personal drama that comes along. However, this concept obviously fails (seriously, after season 3 all people could talk about was how much they hated Ani). So where did it all go wrong, exactly?
Ā Ā The biggest problem with Aniās character is by far her annoying personality. Sheās nosy, spying on everyone and interfering with their lives. Surprisingly this reserved group of teenagers actually opens up to her. After everything that went on you would expect them to be more picky with who they trust. Characters donāt just confide in her, they feel obligated to justify themselves in her eyes. Like sheās some sort of angel.
Aniās the one demanding the truth from everyone, yet sheās the one who keeps secrets. Her relationship with Bryce was meant to paint Bryce as a human being. In no way did Bryce deserve any redemption for his crimes, but it was essential to recognize him as a human, not a monster. Because once we see somebody as a monster, it becomes impossible to destroy them, they start to seem stronger than we are.
No matter how important it was to send this message, it didnāt do any favors to Aniās character. She sleeps with Bryce knowing that heās a rapist. She defends him in front of Clay, like a true rapist apologist. Ani with her hero complex wants to fix everyone, thatās why sheās all up in their business, thatās why she gets involved with Bryce. Unfortunately, she refuses to admit her own imperfection. She is a hypocrite. Even though at the end she acknowledges that sleeping with Bryce was the worst thing sheād ever done, it doesnāt excuse her actions.
Ā Ā Introducing a new character into an existing dynamic is quite tricky. Over the seasons the audience grew to love the established characters. So when you let someone new share screen time with the beloved cast, the newbie should be captivating enough. Moreover, it is unfair for a new character to take away too much screen time from the numerous preexisting cast. It is especially irritating when this character is condescending towards the ones whoāve been there since day one and comes with no character development. That again raises the question: why would you make such a dislikable character (not presented as an antagonist) a main one?
Ā Ā The significant part of Aniās character is the narration of the season. Itās one of the reasons for introducing her character at all⦠But was narration even necessary in season 3?
Season 1 had Hannahās voiceover via tapes because the plot revolved around her, we were seeing life through her eyes. She was the one telling the story. The plot couldnāt go on without it. Narration in season 2 couldāve been avoided, however that season already had a different feel to it, so the writers didnāt want to shock the audience completely by the absence of a voiceover. The narration helped to concentrate on particular parts of the story, and ramifications that the tapes left on each character. We got to see events from different perspectives, not just Clay and Hannahās.
Nevertheless, narration in season 3 was unnecessary and poorly done. It is annoying as it is, when somebody tells the audience everything thatās going on when we can clearly see that for ourselves, but when it comes from a dislikable character it is twice as bad. Narration brings something to the story when it makes the story more interesting, when itās revealing something new. (Thatās why inner monologues actually work, when written well). On the contrary, Aniās never-ending story, full of lies and vague pretentious phrases, is boring and distracting from the plot.
Ā Ā Finally, letās touch upon the whole ā Ani being Clayās love interest ā thing. Since Hannahās gone (and her ghost manifested by Clay as well) the main character needs another sidekick whoāll follow him around, because the audience needs Clay to communicate his feelings and theories at all times (which could be avoided, were Clay the narrator), and apparently Justin and Tony werenāt worthy enough to fit the part of his confidant.
Anyway, Clay and Ani being friends was fine, but where did this forceful romantic plotline come from? Dear writers, your main character does not always have to be in a relationship! We wonāt respect Clay less just because he doesnāt get the girl. Honestly, most people will relate to him even more. Furthermore, it is important to show viewers, especially younger ones, that it is normal not to have a crush or date. The majority of teens doesnāt date in high school, and itās frustrating to see characters always end up with somebody, like without that they canāt be complete or happy.
To be candid, Clay and Ani didnāt seem to have any chemistry. Both, their kiss and Ani telling her mom theyāre dating, were unanticipated and out of place. There was no natural progression for them to be together at the end. After Clay finally sees Ani the way the viewers did all this time (ep 7), itās difficult to find the moment where he starts to like her again or forgives her⦠Just because Ani comes up with the plan to save Alex from jail, it means Clay is in love with her? Clay? Angsty Clay who holds grudges and wants to take revenge on people (e.g. see season 1)? Itās hard to buy it.
Ā Ā There was a theory that S3 was actually supposed to be narrated by Sheri. Unfortunately, Ajiona Alexus left the show. But could you imagine how much better would Sheri be instead of Ani. Sheri is a well developed character since season 1, who is liked by a lot of viewers. She has preexisting relationships with all the main characters, so it would be natural of them to confide in her. Not to mention her and Clay already had a thing in S1, so them ending up together in S3 would be logical and satisfying. Even if the concept of Sheri being the narrator couldnāt be brought to life, the next choice for that role would certainly be Clay aka the main character, not just a random new girl.
Ā Ā Ā Taking into account the upcoming season 4, what can there be done to repair the damage? Even though some may argue itās the easiest decision, I doubt that Aniās character will be just written off (no matter how much I want it). I see only two possible outcomes. Either her character gets way less screen time, or she gets outstanding character development, although I have no idea what there could be done for the audience to like her. At last, it is vital that the writers get rid of her narration.
I hope the flaws of the last season will be fixed, because Iām excited to see where the story takes us next, and I donāt want to suffer through Aniās character to find out.
Control Z was an entertaining watch /at times/. However, I wouldnāt go around recommending it to people. The characters and the storyline lacked depth, and too many questions were left unanswered. While watching it I couldnāt stop thinking how much the plot, the characters and some directorial choices reminded me of other better shows. So hereās the list of those that I would rather watch instead. However, it can also be considered as a list of shows that you might like if you enjoyed Control Z.
GOSSIP GIRL [2007-2012]
Gossip Girl revolves around the lives of privileged white teenagers and their āproblemsā. Lots of sex, love triangles, mind games and secrets. Oh, and of course thereās a mystery blog that publishes all the secrets of Manhattanās elite (that being basically four people). The secret identity of gossip girl isnāt that big of a plot point, at least early on. The main characters are probably too busy partying, hooking up and dealing with their terrible parents to care about somebody documenting their lives.
Gossip Girl has a lot of similar elements to Control Z, but itās way more messier, dramatic, over the top and fast paced. Although its problematic moments and lack of representation definitely make it a guilty pleasure, itās still one of the most iconic teen dramas to this day.
ELITE [2018-...]
If you want to watch another show in Spanish, this oneās for you.
Rich teenagers in a private school. Check. Mystery drama. Check. A LOT of secrets. Check. And on top of that, sex, drugs, parties and MURDER.
The most appealing thing about the show must be the striking set of characters with different backgrounds, struggles, fears and desires. Although, just like in Control Z you canāt really trust anybody as you set forth on this murderous journey.
PRETTY LITTLE LIARS [2010-2017]
A story about four estranged friends, whose lives are turned upside down by an anonymous threatening their lives and unraveling their secrets.
This is honestly a mess of a show. Too convoluted, with many plot holes, and questionable storylines. What kept the attention of the audience throughout the years were the characters and the romantic pairings. Nonetheless, the showās entertaining and suspenseful. With higher stakes if we compare it to Control Z.
T@GGED [2016-2018]
T@gged is a psychological thriller. We follow three girls who try to find out whoās tagging them in violent videos.
The production is low-budget, yet thereās beautiful scenery and camera work. It isnāt a typical glossy teen show. The characters and their struggles are realistic and relatable. It tackles such topics as drug abuse, suicide, depression, self harm, cyber bullying. It is darker and scarier that Control Z, and it is the only underrated show on this list.
SPOILERS FOR CONTROL Z BELOW
YOU [2018-...]
If you enjoyed Raulās villain origin story in episode 7 and/or would like a more realistic and in depth glimpse into the psyche of an obsessive stalker, YOU is for you. It takes the stalker plot to another level, actually exposing it for what it is in real life, creepy and unhealthy. Watching a girl through her windows, following her at the park and kidnapping everyone who stands in your way is not cute. Joe is no Raul, but he is what Raul failed to be, a well-written villain.
SHERLOCK [2010-2017]
So, Sofia being able to read everyoneās secrets just because sheās introverted and observant was far-fetched. Moreover, it wasnāt original. The idea of cutting frames, flashing clues and close-ups was taken straight from Sherlock. It was the first show Control Z reminded me of. And if you want a detective show of higher quality, here you go.
