It started as a normal shitpost and got out of control FAST

with a pep in her step, nobara moves with purpose as she flits from store to store, the four smaller bags on her arms filling with more and more things. festivals in the city were much more so than back home. they were much more lively, much more people-filled, much more ambient in atmosphere, much more her speed, and nobara was capitalizing on the benefits of discounts and sales off.

5月7日: it's ōgon shūkan in japan, a temporarily extended time of festive celebration and mirth, and the staffs and student bodies of both jujutsu tech schools are in attendance: in accordance with keeping up their disguises as well-meaning institutions geared towards the religious and academic futures of a select, few kids.

in a highly good mood, nobara doesn't mean to sound bossy if she does? but it's also like, the more load of heavier bags he's carrying aside, okkotsu-senpai is taller than her, so he has no excuse for the slow pace he's moving at. she's shorter than him, she would know.

her patience exists on a spectrum, it begins and ends at slow walking, and her momentum is one that can hardly be interrupted once it begins ... but she pauses in her stride if only to turn around slightly, a hand placed on her hip, demanding that okkotsu pick up his pace with a gesture of her other and a look that says slow walking at her expense isn't his place.

usually itadori and fushiguro would be the ones accompanying her, holding any bags she'd shove off on them, but they're busied doing whatever else right now — itadori had made prior plans to hit up a festival and dragged fushiguro along for the ride, with them all promising to meet up later. either way: those two left her all alone, not that she'd have particularly cared if she didn't require company that entailed heavier lifting than she didn't care to do, leaving her to seek alternate means.

okkotsu was her bag boy for the day, less robust than itadori and less broody than fushiguro, she made her pick work all things considered. they were making good timing, too, hitting a few more stores, before okkotsu tired out. “ kugisaki-san, do you think we could take a break? ” he asks and she relents, just a smidge, leading them to the food court.

in his defense? he was new to this, experiencing her in all of her exuberance, her in her element. kugisaki nobara is the same girl outside of school, free-spirited and lively, and she revels in her youth. unbothered by the toils of classwork and sorcerery, she pours equally into her passions.

a sip of her matcha milk tea with boba, nobara is in a good mood, she's bright-eyed and all smiles, and the fruitful shopping day's haul will stave her off from borrowing gojō-sensei's black card for two to three weeks, at the most.

“ thanks for coming with me, senpai. i know that you might probably have wanted to be more so in the company of maki-san and inumaki senpai — — or even panda, but still: this meant a lot. i couldn't have possibly carried all these bags myself. ”

❥:::  yuta  didn’t  think  he’d  get  dragged  along  for  a  shopping  trip  with  his  kohai.  literally  dragged.  she  didn’t  take  no  for  an  answer.  yuta  doesn’t  mind  too  much  since  he  sees  it  as  a  bonding  experience.  but  for  the  most  part,  he  carries  her  bags  as  they  went  from  store  to  store.  kugisaki  was  really  energetic  and  lively.  just  as  maki  described  her.

 yuta  gave  her  weakened  smile.  ❝  Um…  Kugisaki-san…  do  you  think  we  can  take  a  break?  ❞  yuta  asked. 

the  weight  of  the  bags  makes  it  hard  for  him  to  keep  up  with  her.  the  circle  under  his  eyes  seems  darker  than  usual.  he  almost  look  on  the  verge  of  passing  out.

before she could even put a name to a face, nobara had already decided that she had a bone to pick with special-grade tōkyō jujutsu tech 2nd year okkotsu yūta. in retrospect, this wasn't at all hard to do. before he had gotten back from wherever he'd been overseas early, his name had lingered in the mouths of the other 2nd years: the residuals of his cursed energy may as well have had lingered in the hallways, too.

his accomplishments during last year's goodwill event with their sister school were spoken of with an undercurrent of pride, and even fushiguro held a deep respect for him: but nobara wasn't impressed.

if anything? she was mildly annoyed. call it a petty annoyance at his thrashing those kyōto hasbeens so good that the succeeding year's goodwill event had to be held on tōkyō's turf instead of where she wanted to sightsee and try new foods, and she'd be lying to herself if she said she hadn't felt a flare of pride, but still ...

it's annoying: the way he walks past her in between classroom transitionings without so much as an inkling of the setback he's put her through ( she was on a slightly fixed schedule and he ruined it! ), the way she catches him during co-training smiling sheepishly and rubbing his head while talking to maki-san, panda, and inumaki-senpai from across the training grounds, the way he's so nice ( he reminds her of itadori in that regard ) that it makes feeling even an inkling of annoyance at him? feel like a slight against him despite what he's unintionally ruined for her, the way he can't tell when a girl's got a bone to pick with him even if he doesn't necessarily know her.

what's even more annoying is that she doesn't necessarily know him, so it's a petty annoyance nobara is feeling and that annoys her more, but even still? she's decided he's earned her ire for making it so that she wouldn't be able to explore all kyōto had to offer a countryside girl, an outsider, like her. she's decided that, for his transgression of annoying her, that he must make it up to her.

so, it's in between classroom transitionings where she catches him at the water fountain that she decides on confronting him, a hand on her hip and stamped down annoyance hidden behind tight, pursed lips as she approaches him. she introduces herself as casually as she can muster as a friend and kouhai of maki-san's, to which he replies in kind, he inquires: you're kugisaki-san, right? and it annoys her that he's being formal with her where he doesn't have to be. kugisaki is just fine, no honorifics are needed. he doesn't hear itadori nor fushiguro using them, does he? okkotsu is his own person, though, he'll do what he will.

pride blooms in her chest, though, at her sensei singing praises to his current class. she has been doing somewhat well in her studies, a little better than itadori, even with the cirruculum something she's getting used to. pride blooms in her chest, and — — — no, no, no! she couldn't forget why she had cornered him at the school's water fountain, couldn't forget the annoyance that had festered before pride had even deigned to take root with his honeyed words.

“ hold that thought, okkotsu. i've got a question: did you ever stop to think about the types of students that'd be filtering into gojō-sensei's class this coming year? what different kinds of walks we've taken just to end up in the same place anyway, where we're from? do you even care? ”

❝ oh , that's a hell of a coincidence ! but anyone who's friends with maki - san is a friend of mine . ❞ the special grade quickly forms his lips into a much warmer , welcoming smile as opposed to the serious expression he'd been wearing before when he comes to the understanding that this is a kouhai of his fellow classmate , not to mention probably one of the students gojo - sensei specifically requested he look out for . good luck or coincidence , he's content with the matter , blade settled over his shoulder in a thick black sheath . ❝ okkotsu yuta , maki - san's classmate . and you're kugisaki - san , right ? ❞ as soon as he suspects her offense , he's quick to explain himself ; ❝ gojo - sensei had nothing but good things to say about his new students this year . ❞

午後2時,  平成30年8月17日,  tōkyō jujutsu tech. 

the smell of antiseptic is what greets her as heels turn to walk her down the halls of the infirmary wing of tōkyō jujutsu tech while well on her way to ieiri-san. in dainty hands is a hall pass clutched, as well as a hand written note, given to her by gojō-sensei.

she's been down these halls more times than her pride allows her to admit, muscle memory leading her swiftly. in no time, nobara is poking her head inside one of many rooms: one of which ieiri-san just happened to be working in diligently,  sat hunched over a work desk, reading something rather intently. 

intuition and the material reality of being part of jujutsu society  —  i mean really being part of it!  — tells her that the older sorcerer is reading a death report.

perhaps one of many that she's shuffled viewing throughout the day. it comes with the job, of course, and nobara particularly feels no way. well, that was a half a lie. she had cared once, about death reports, when itadori was killed on their retrival mission to the eishu detention center in west tōkyō.

she'd been put out of commission early in during and cursed her own shortsightedness in not being properly prepared, concerned more about sightseeing and stuffing her face with new foods rather than making sure that she was properly equipped to fight against the thrall of curses tōkyō threw  — and would continue to throw  —  in her path. 

what is she, being tested yet again?  just who knew, really?  she passed the initial that reaffirmed her place among her peers as a student and that was all that mattered in the end. she passed the one that marked her crazy enough to fit snugly in this shadow society with flying colors. 

a few dyed strands of ginger are tucked behind an ear as she hands over the note. her individualized assignment this day had been fairly simple, to him at least: she was to sit in,  listen to ieiri-san explain the theoretical framework of using reverse cursed technique, watch her demonstrate such, and jot down notes. truly, though, this was easier said than done:

reversed curse technique is extremely complex and even healing  — something ieiri-san was one of few people known to be adept at — was a concept it'd take years to learn. nobara supposes that that's why her sensei has her trying to get a hang of it now while she was still a second-year, blooming still with so much promise.

still though, nobara finds a chair in the nearest corner of the room, plops down in it to sling her bookbag off her back, rummage around for a sparkly blue gel pen and a notebook, and she flips it open to find a page to prepare to write on. should be easy enough, right? hah, fat chance of that!

either way, she's attentive as she can be while eyes track ieiri-san's rise from her desk, to her shuffle over to pulling open a drawer full of manilla folders and neatly tucking the latest report into that folder, to her eventual walk over to the table she'd prepared for nobara's professed lesson: pulling the drawsheet back to reveal the immobile cursed corpse underneath.

gross ... technically speaking: it was distinct from the cutesy creature type of cursed corpses nobara knew principal yaga to fashion. this was more human-like in appearance, probably meant specifically crafted to invoke anatomic familiarity. deliberate lacerations were made on its body: deep gashes in its arms, legs, and hands meant to simulate grievous injuries but they pale in comparison to the reality of a sorcerer doomed to a curse. there's usually not much to recover and an intact body is a blessing.

wara ningyō are a popular kind of katashiro made of straw [ ... ] wara ningyō are used extensively as wards against evil. they are combined with something from the recipient of the curse, such as a piece of hair. this transforms the doll into a substitute for the intended target. long nails are pushed through the wara ningyō, harming the subject as well as the doll.

a curse stake-out with gojo-sensei!⠀웃⠀semi-plotted starter.

ginza, ginza, she was in ginza!  nobara had heard great things about ginza, mainly from magazines acquired from her local konbini back home, and what's more is that now? now she's experiencing first-hand what people find so great about ginza since her move to the city from the boonies of tōhoku.

that doe-eyed, amazed child-to-tween reading through said magazines was now reflected in her eyes as she took in the sights,  reflected in her nose as she took in the smells,  reflected in her ears as she took in the hustle and bustle of the famed shopping district with a penchant for attracting tourists and those native alike, joined only together in the allure that has enchanted them to come in the first place. 

put simply: nobara has found herself in shopping paradise. 

quite frankly, though?  she should be enjoying herself, enjoying the chillness that's seeping into the day as it gradually turns to night, since she's off-duty, after all. she should be decked out for the weather, dressed to the nines, and enjoying herself as teenage girls do! 

she's off-duty, technically, but technically? she's never off-duty.  

so sure, it was an off-day technically, but what's that to a student-sorcerer whose enemies are spawned around the clock: birthed by the negativity found in humanity? where her hands would be holding any number of shopping bags on a night like tonight, they're empty on a saturday night. she can't be too put off, though, it comes with the job. she isn't alone, anyway: her sensei, as eccentric and jovial as he is, is accompanying her on what is a stake-out in the deeper part of the district.

her targets for tonight? a gaggle of upper grade 2s in a residential area: they boast the kind of intellect that makes it easy for them to pick off unsuspecting targets, and what's more is that they'd been in the area for quite some time, coming out of dormancy every now and again to terrorize. it was no wonder why they weren't exorcised sooner, but nobara supposes they'd had been kept alive just for this.

part of her should be annoyed that she isn't shopping, but there's a flounce in her step that's a touch too giddy. she's been practicing on optimizing the maximum damage of hairpin once triggered, the usage of the one binding vow she can't be bothered to properly place the name of right now: she just knows that she's elated to try it out, showcase her ever-budding strength to her sensei —-

because she had been practicing: because that's the point of attending tōkyō jujutsu tech in the first place, you hone your cursed technique against curses, you fight curses with curses. it's a battle of cursing, but it isn't something trivial, in hindsight it isn't something inherently moralistic. it just is, and that's how it's been for a long while: probably how it'll always be.

a job's a job, a cycle's a cycle, a machine's a machine until it's not. until it inevitably breaks down due to rusted old parts that interfere with its functioning, until it has no choice but to replace those old parts with new parts or until it's replaced with something new entirely.

“ since this is cutting into my me time, sensei, you wouldn't mind making sure a couple extra yen gets deposited into my student bank account, right? ”

maybe she shouldn't have tailed him, she'd thought this over and over before impulse had her mind made up for her, had her rushing inside the veil to face low-level curses provoked out into the open under the guised cover of night. nanami-san was a capable sorcerer, this she knew, and good rationale told kugisaki that he had the higher graded ones covered, but duty still spurred her forward into the fray regardless.

what sort of sorcerer would she be if she just sat on her hands when she was able to do something? wasn't she capable, wasn't she made for this? she wasn't the type to sit back on her hands for a victory she could hardly call her own if it'd been handed to her. she was here to do her part, pull her own weight, even if that weight in the form of rambunctious curses threatened to crush her sometimes. in any case: she was capable, she was made for this.

once she'd made her way to where the older grade 1 stood in the middle of the street by his lonely, solitaire with his back turned to her and weapon in hand, she notes that there is no tension to be seen in his shoulders, no fatigue in his posture.

she hopes in her silence that she doesn't appear to be awestruck, too bright-eyed, because showmanship of jujutsu is nothing new to her. curses being exorcised aren't something she hasn't seen before, much less done. she's sure the curses he exorcised were no match for his technique, but still she hopes she doesn't appear to be too awestruck. besides: she's no itadori, no newbie to this, so she's quick to recover once she reaches his side, hammer clutched and eyes peeled for any more outliers he'd have missed —-

not that he'd have, because nanami-san was made for this, but she was too!

seeing how dingy and impersonal the JJtech dorm rooms look, nobody can tell me that nobara hasn’t at least tried to spruce hers up — tried to make it hers a bit bc can u imagine spending 4 years living as a ward of JJtech and the space you’re living in just looks as if you were only meant to exist in it + nothing else??? like, admittedly she won’t overdo it with the styling n personalization bc it won’t hold a candle to her having her own space, but still.

when nobara was called in to study at tokyo tech and her grandma was against it, akari travelled all the way to their village to talk with them and find a compromise. she's not sure it helped at all but she's glad nobara managed to attend school

just like she does with arata, akari takes nobara out once a month for brunch and shopping for various necessities. she's very aware that the younger sorcerer shopping habits continue even after that but let's say in that one specific day she's usually off duty and can approach the situation more as a friend than the person who has to make sure nothing bad happens on the field

after shibuya, nobara is lowkey one of the family to both akari and arata. they've spent so much time together during the convalescence period that it would just feel weird not to think of her as such
