aphmau brought me here! i saw the community, and as a lifelong aphmau fan—with a rewrite in the works by the way—i just had to join in. tumblr’s been on my radar for a while now to join!

i’ll be generally posting my art and ramblings! unfortunately, i probably won’t have a very set schedule, but i’ll try to post at least once or twice a week.

People who claim they're #1 fans of their favourite character and then tarnish the characters development and speak badly of their favourites make me chuckle, and when I say speak badly I don't mean discuss something bad that character did, i mean just straight up slander filled with mischaracterization essays.
Like do you even LIKE the character? They're always the one to sexualize the characters the most as well. Gross.

Why Kuzuryu’s final act was done incorrectly
In the king ♦︎ game Kuzuryu is left with the decision of judging the worth of Chishiya’s life by either pressing 0 (letting him live) or 1 (death). Kuzuryu’s ideal was that all life is equal.
He ends up pressing both 0 and 1 at the same time letting fate or luck decide. With that staying true to his ideal of not being able to judge the worth of life/refusing to.
In the live action adaptation he presses 0, letting Chishiya win. When I saw this I was mad. How does that show his ideals when they were to not judge life and then go against it and do so? Isn’t that deciding that Chishiyas life has more value than his.
By leaving it up to chance he crystallizes his ideals and sticks to what he believes in even if it were to cost him his life.
It also goes hand in hand into the ongoing subplot of Chishiyas luck in games even though he doesn’t care if he lives or dies. As if the universe is cursing him to face his emptiness.
After finishing the second season yesterday and ruminating a bit about it, I can confidently say I agree.
I’m still sad that manga Chishiya will only be a part of manga Chishiya and with that have less of an audience but I can also see the qualities of the LA version.
I think I was and am just sad that a character I adore was never shown in the end. By that I mean we only got a part of manga Chishiyas story. I was looking forward to the Mona Lisa scene and kuzuryu pressing both 0 and 1. I have something to say to Kuzuryu too an actual complaint of the LA.
Perhaps I was bitter- no I am probably bitter about it. I wanted to see those beautiful scenes in another medium. So it makes sense why I was so upset. I do hope it will be animated one day. What id give to heat a lovely soundtrack combined with rain sounds as Chishiya stands in-front of the ♢king entrance. I truly hope it will be made…
I musst seem oddly passionate about this story. I can’t help it though, it’s precious to me. I really am sad it wasn’t told in full- guess that’s just the pain one needs to expect when something gets adapted. Most times they change at least something anyway.
No, the Netflix live action (adaptation) doesn't butcher Chishiya's backstory. The two different backstories are relevant in explaining apathy.
(And as a manga reader who respects the mangaka (edit: and the scriptwriters), I see Live Action Chishiya and Manga Chishiya as two separate yet equally cool characters).
Apathy is rooted from a damaging childhood and a traumatizing adulthood.
This apathy is the reason why both Manga Chishiya and Live Action Chishiya seemed "unbothered", when they were actually almost mentally numb.
For apathy to start (with no neurological causes), one must be either an abused kid, or a traumatized and burned out adult, or both.
The emotional abuse that Manga Chishiya had to endure was killing him on the inside. So much that he chose medicine out of spite (although he said otherwise), and deteriorated.
While we don't know what made Live Action Chishiya chose medicine, the fact remains that he didn't do anything to save his patients from being manslaughtered and let it slide as an everyday decision.
Aren't these two the cases of apathy? Aren't these two backstories enough to explain that both Chishiyas are morally complicated?
No? Then let me explain more.
The post-Borderland consequences of the two different backstories matter in different ways for Chishiya.
Manga Chishiya would have to heal his inner wounded child and make up for his immoral act against his dying patient (the letter throwing), and for disregarding life (his and others). Maybe he would quit medicine as he rediscovers himself. Maybe he would be a better med student and then doctor. Maybe he would cut ties with his family. I don't know.
Meanwhile, Live Action Chishiya would have to come to terms with the fact that he was a gaslit, powerless adult who conspired with criminals in a series of manslaughter. Maybe he'd be a whistleblower. Possibly jailed. Made an outcast. Hated by the public and the patients. Or, he could become an anonymous whistleblower while recovering. Again, I don't know.
And the point is they both matter.
Also, no, the live action doesn't try to "make Chishiya more palatable to the public" as accused by some fellow manga readers, imho.
Because even in real life, complicit whistleblowers are shunned. Let alone a criminal. And what Chishiya did in the live action, no matter how decent a doctor he might've seemed at the start, was immoral and criminal.
So how can you call Live Action Chishiya "more morally palatable", when he did worse things than Manga Chishiya?
Instead of chasing palatability, the live action inserts an ongoing social problem into the character. There's a current debate in the ethics, medical and social research circles (for example in Germany) whether manipulation of organ transplant waitlist is considered manslaughter or organizational deviance. People actually die while waiting for their organ transplants, so when the waitlist is manipulated, isn't that a crime? I'm thankful that the show attached this complicated real time issue to Chishiya.
Child abuse and its long-lasting effects on children (the case of Manga Chishiya) will always be relevant. But so will the moral weight of taking lives (the case of Live Action Chishiya).
Last but not least, at the end of the day, didn't both Manga Chishiya and Live Action Chishiya want to change? Didn't they both save an innocent life? Why must it matter how they started out as long as they both emerged in the light?

i cannot stand the fact adap Chishiya is a Hearts player, sowz. it's clear to me the adap writers completely misunderstood what makes someone a Hearts player in the first place and ran with it.
Chishiya can read others emotions to some extent, sure, but not in-depth enough to sympathize.
you wanna know why Chishiya (and Niragi) are Diamonds players? because they don't care enough to truly understand the hearts of others. they manipulate situations, not (usually) out of desperation, but because it's all they know. they lack a genuine understanding with others.
(adap) Arisu being a Diamonds player also completely misses the point: Arisu is so similar to Chishiya and Niragi that if, at any point prior to the Borderlands, he had one more thing go wrong, he could've ended up like the two of them; but he didn't because he refused to be like that.
Arisu is a Hearts player because he's both smarter than he gives himself credit for, and emotionally mature enough to take to heart (wink wink) the emotions of others and actively put himself in their shoes to get through a game.
that last reason is why Matsushita Enji is such a lousey Hearts player, because, like Chishiya and Niragi, he isn't emotionally mature enough to truly be good at Hearts. he has great setups, sure, but he's too proud to acknowledge other players and their inteligence, which is why he was ultimately defeated by Yaba and Banda.
Yaba and Banda both come from backgrounds where they need to read others to some extent: Yaba, a CEO who climbed the corporate ladder by reading others and using those emotions to his advantage (as we saw happen with Arisu when he was confronted by the militants), and Banda, a misogynistic murderer who got into the houses of women he killed, needed to be agile enough to get them to trust him by manipulating the situation in his favor, all while keeping in mind the emotions of those he killed.
Hearts games are not won by sheer manipulation, as we saw with Enji and Urumi; there needs to be a level of connection with others if you want to survive, which is also why Mitsurugi's defeat was so upsetting; ideally, he did everything right, but ultimately was a bit too confident in his plan and thus, refused to acknowledge the power the other players had. he was too good of a person.
Mira is a bit of an outlier, not because she was bad at the games or anything, but because she's the perfect mix of both understanding and master manipulator; if she went up against any other player in the Borderlands, they would easily lose. Arisu almost lost too, but as we've established, Hearts games are built off connections with others and Usagi was needed in order to make it.
I'm sure Mira was well-aware of that fact, especially with Arisu, but her ulimate failure was the same as Mitsurugi's: she ended up downplaying the connection between him and Usagi. Hearts games need love, level-headedness, mild manipulation, and an open mind if you intend to win.
going back to my main point, that's why Chishiya either avoids Hearts games all together, manipulates people during them, or turns to violence; he lacks the emotional maturity and agency to clear one the way they are meant to be cleared, why Arisu is a much better Hearts player than Chishiya will ever be, and why the adap writers completely misunderstood that point.
Hoping praying blood sacrificing for a proper full AIB anime adaptation. Will it ever happen most unlikely. Is there hope? Always!

he's apathetic, not unbothered. things still bother him but he just cant bring himself to care enough for an appropriate reaction. and thats on him being neglected for his entire life and never learning how to feel/deal with emotions--but the adap just left that part out

Im so glad we are talking about this. What is this butchering of Chishiya. When I choose to finish the show I’ll need to repent by rereading the manga at least 3 times.
I was also really excited to see the letter scene and the Mona Lisa scene even more. It’s such a beautiful scene.

I never liked the Mona Lisa. Her popularity definitely added to it but the painting never spoke to me. These panels made me appreciate the painting more and what it can mean to others. I’m grateful as an artist to have gotten more hindsight into that as well.

The fact that they changed his past and put him in the paediatric ward with all the implication of "eh now I'm so apathetic because I've seen people die because of the corrupt system and I pretend I don't care" gne gne... IT DOES NOT IMPROVE THE CHARACTER. ON THE CONTRARY.
Chishiya was not in pediatrics, he was a medical student "on field" in the hospital and he's the same person who, when a dying patient gave him a letter for his wife and children, he smiled, said "Don't worry I'LL HAND IT OVER" and then proceeded to THROW IT IN A TRASH CAN JUST OUTSIDE THE ROOM SAYING THAT FOR HIM THOSE THINGS ARE JUST A PAIN IN THE ASS.
Chishiya doesn't care about understanding people's hearts, he has no interest in the concept of life. He says that himself.
I don't know what the fuck they wanted to do but twisting this big part of him made my balls drop
Little rant:
I hate hate hate hate detest the AIB show changing Chishiya’s backstory so much. I saw someone saying it was probably to make him more sympathetic. I find it very annoying. Let him be hated. He wasn’t a good person, he didn’t do good things and his backstory does not excuse that. It is merely an explanation to his actions and thought process.
TLDR: apathetic Chishiya shouldn’t be excused and I love his character in the manga (the 4 story deluxe cake of analyzing I get to chow down on)
AIB season 3 announcement, didn’t see that coming. With the first two seasons having adapted the manga I wonder if they will do the spin off manga for season 3 or something original.

You were wondering around the beach, trying to enjoy one of the free nights you had with your newly extended visa. Once you got away from all the people partying, the beach was actually quite peaceful. Making your way around the buildings empty halls lost in thought, you find yourself by the room the executives have meetings in.
Walking by you saw that the room was cracked open and saw a figure sitting in one of the chairs. You step closer to the door to see who it was, trying to not make yourself known. Peeking through the crack, you see a blonde head of hair tipped back with their eyes closed. You were quickly able to tell it was Chishiya.
Now everyone knew that you had a thing for Chishiya. You tried not showing it but anytime the man spoke, you would listen so attentively. When the man was walking by your eyes would be trained on his figure. Sometimes if you were sitting in the same room, you would often just stare at him. Even right now, you couldn’t help but drag your eyes down his relaxed body. Safe to say- you were quite infatuated with Chishiya. However, your thoughts of him were quickly interrupted by a deep raspy voice.
“You going to just stand there or are you going to come in?” The man in front of you spoke, eyes still closed and head tilted back.
You jolted back, face burning up after being caught. You grab the handle of the door and slowly push it open, listening to the hinges squeak as it’s opened wider. You slowly walk into the room with slow steps closing the door behind you, stopping only a few feet past the door.
Chishiya finally opened his eyes and tilted his head back to you. He noticed that you were only a few step into the door and smirked at your timidness.
“What, don’t want to come any closer?” He speaks to you. Now that you were in the room you could see that his usually zipped up hoodie was unzipped, hands still in his pockets though. This and his comment catch you off guard, making you lose your of thought. After a few seconds, you shake your head and start to move closer. Eventually you make it to next to his chair, only a couple of feet from him now. After a second you gain the confedence to say something to him.
“What are you doing just sitting here?” You ask him, crossing your arms and trying not to stare at his very exposed chest.
“Why were you creeping at the door?” He asked you back, staring up at you and raking his own eyes up and down your body. In your process of crossing your arms, you failed to realize that you were pushing up your overly exposed breast that were in a bikini top. Realizing this, it makes you huff and drop your arms.
“I wasn’t creeping. I just saw the door open and was wondering who was just sitting here all depressingly.” You tell him, returning his stare. He just gives a small huff of a laugh and keeps staring at you. The two of you continue to have what seems to be a staring contest since neither of you want to blink before the other. You couldn’t hold up though, your eyes starting to water and eventually you blink and look away from the man sitting in front of you.
As you’re looking away, you see Chishiya stand up from the corner of your eye. You still didn’t want to look at him though, afraid you’d just keep looking at his chest that was still out in the open. By doing so, you failed to realize where Chishiya was standing now. He had stopped just a foot away from you, close enough to even smell now. You slowly turned your head stared up at the man in front of you. You were now backed against the edge of the table, your bottom pressing against the hard edge.
“I see the way look at me, you sure you weren’t creeping?” He whispered down at you with his smirk still on his face. He finally took his hands out of his pockets and placed them on the table, making you lean back and press your bottom even harder into the table.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” You tell him, adverting your eyes. However, you couldn’t do that for long before you felt a hand grab onto your face and turn you back to him. Now your faces were only an inch a part, you could even feel Chishiya breathe on your face.
“Why don’t you ever say anything to me huh?” He ask you, caressing the side the side of your face waiting for you to answer him. You give an almost audible gulp, staring into Chishiya dark eyes that were piercing into yours.
“I just didn’t think you’d want me around you.” You whisper back to him. Chishiya tilts his head at you, chuckling at your response. Bring his hand down to brush against your bottom lip.
“You think I don’t want you?” He asked but doesn’t let you respond because the next thing that happens is his lips pressing into yours. You’re shocked for a second before you melt into the kiss. Chishiya grabs onto your exposed waist, thanks to the swimsuit you’re wearing. Not sure what to really do with your hands, you just place them behind you on the table. After a minute, Chishiya pulls back just enough to say something to you.
“That tell you I want you around?” He tells in his raspy voice. Trying to catch your breath, all you can do is nod at his words.
“Good.” Chishiya tells you before grabbing your hips and pulling you up to sit on the table. This has you letting out a small yelp in shock, but you can’t say anything again because Chishiyas lips find yours a second later. This time the kiss is a lot more passionate. You feel his tongue brush the bottom of your lip, wanting entrance into your mouth. You didn’t really know what to do because you haven’t really done anything like this before.
Chishiya could tell by the way you weren’t really doing much, so he decided to take the lead. He moved his hands down to your butt, squeezing it and pushing your body flush with his. This made you gasp and Chishiya took that moment to push his tongue into your mouth. You let out a small moan, which you could feel Chishiya smirk at through the kiss.
Eventually he moved away from your mouth and started to kiss down the side of your neck. As he was doing that you felt one of his hangs move to the front of your body. The hand creeped around the front, stopping at the top of the waistband of your swimsuit. You were letting out quiet moans, trying not to be so loud considering you guys were technically in a public space even if the doors were closed.
You could feel Chishiya inch his fingers to your waistband, pulling back from your neck and looking at your face. You look up at him, your chest heaving up and down. He was clearly asking for your consent, gripping at the bikini ready to move it. You were hesitant but you knew you could trust Chishiya, so you nod your head him. He presses his lips to yours again, giving your side a squeeze. He then moves his hand back to your front again, brushing over your front. You gasp at the touch, having never felt anything like this before. You’ve touched yourself before but you haven’t ever had someone elses touch.
Chishiya starts rubbing over the swimsuit, fingers circle of where your clit is at. This feeling was new but very nice to you, so you tilt your head back and let out a slightly louder moan, leaning back on your hands again. As soon as you did so, you snap your head back up and cover your mouth, looking at the man in front of you. Looking at him, he had that same smirk he always had when he liked something.
“You know, if you’re any louder than that, we’re gonna get caught.” He tells you, continuing to make circles of your clit. All you can do in response was nod your head and try not to be so loud.
Eventually Chishiya moves to the side of your swimsuit bottom and pulls it to the side, finally exposing you to him. He lets out a small groan, looking at the way you were already soaking from him just touching and kissing you. He moved his fingers around your center, testing what made you let out more sounds and what didn’t. He kept doing this until you were dripping and letting out small whines, trying to stay as quiet as possible. Chishiya looks up at your face before finally pushing a finger into you.
You gasp at the new feeling, Chishiyas finger was way longer and reached a lot further than yours had ever had. Testing the waters again he added a second while pressing his thumb against your clit. He started curling his fingers and moving them in and out of you, his other finger making circles on your clit at the same time. You were sat in a meeting with all the other executives, listening to the hatter ramble on and on about his ongoing utopia and the games. During the meeting though, you could feel someone staring at you, burning holes into the side of your head. At first you thought it was Chishiya, although your relationship isn’t widley known to everyone, he could just be staring at his you during the boring meeting. However when you finally glanced towards your left where Chishiya is seating and find his eyes locked on hatter. Although he was sitting leaning towards you, he wasn’t the one looking at you.
Confused, you start to look farther past where Chishiya was sitting at to the other people to the left of you. As you go down the row you finally catch someones gaze staring back you. You lock eyes with the person burning holes into the side of your head.
The person being none other than Niragi.
When he caught you looking back at him all he did was smirk a bit and return his attention back on the hatter. You didn’t like the way he was looking at you and shifted uncomfortably in your chair.
Soon the meeting was called to an end and everyone was dismissed. You filed out the doors like everyone else was doing, and somehow ended up as one of the last people in there. Chishiya was already out the door in front of you before you could catch up to him. As you were about to leave the room you felt someone grip your arm and pull you back into the empty room.
When you look back at you who had pulled you back into the meeting room. It was the person who exactly didn’t want to be left in a room alone with.
Looking up at him, he was looking down at you with the smirk he was giving you earlier. You really were starting to get tired of that smirk.
“You know, Chishiya can’t just have you to himself right?” Niragi spoke down to you. You just rolled your eyes at him and respond to him.
“Yeah well, what makes you think i’d want to be with you hm?” You tell him trying to back away from the annoying man in front of you. He just follows you as you back up. Soon enough you’re hitting the door you just tried leaving out of.
“Oh well, we’ll see how long you stay with that weirdo.” He says to you before grabbing the handle to the door and walking off. After a few seconds of collecting yourself you walk outside the door yourself.
As you cross the threshold of the door, you see Chishiya leaning against the wall next to the door. As you close the door behind you he glances over to you. He gives a once over of you before pushing off the wall and coming to stand in front of you.
“What did he want.” Chishiya asks you, getting close to you, hands still in his pockets as usual. His eyes had that half lidded stare that you always liked about him. Trying to not get lost in his eyes, you respond back to him.
“Just giving me some bullshit on how long he thinks I’ll stay with you before running off to him.” You tell him rolling your eyes like you did when niragi was speaking to you. All Chishiya did was hum and nod his head. He takes one hand out of his pocket, tilting your head up to his.
“Is that right, hm?” Chishiya whispers to you, which you respond with a confirming hum.
“Well, we’ll see about that won’t we.” Chishiya says before sliding his hand down and grabbing onto yours and pulling to you down the hallway.

The day had gone on like normal after this afternoons ordeal. The usual people partying around the beach and those who aren’t partying are laying back in there rooms doing who knows what. You had just finished grabbing a bite to eat with Chishiya and was heading back to your guys room. Chishiya was being as layed back as he normally was while you were the one keeping any type of conversations going for the day.

As you turn around to look back at Chishiya, you realize he was already right next to you.
He was inches from you, staring down at you with the smallest smile on his face. Looking up at him you couldn’t help but smile a little bit yourself.
“Whats that smile for?” You ask him, looking at his face look down at you. Chishiya takes his hands out of his pockets and places them on your exposed waist. Thanks to the swimsuit rule at the beach, all you ever wore now was a bikini set you found at a store near by, along with a small shaw to keep you not totally exposed.
“Niragi said you weren’t mine hm?” Chishiya whispers down to you, leaning in slightly. Before you could say something back to him, he’s speaking again.

He was shedding his jacket that he always kept on, now being left topless with just a pair of swim trunks on. Even though this wasn’t the first time seeing him like this, it always got you slightly speechless. You continue to watch him as he climbs over you, joining you on the bed.
“You know I seriously don’t want him right?” You tell him now that you’re face to face. Chishiyas hair is now curtaining the two of your faces since he was so leaning over you.
“Oh I know, but I think he might need a little reminder on whos you are.” He tells before bring his lips down to yours, stopping you from trying to question what he’s going to do. You melt into his kiss, grabbing onto his arms that were placed next to your head. Chishiya grabs your hands from his arms and places them above your head, stopping you from moving them anymore. The kiss was quickly turning more passionate by the second as chishiyas tongue explored your mouth. You easily lost dominance over his skilled tongue skimming over yours. Not sure how canon this is but I have personally decided that the reason people in alice in borderland can bleed out for 3 episodes straight, no problem but Tatta died of a broken hand might be because he gave up on living and as we now know borderland is between life and death so giving up does result in death the same way losing does. Other characters might not have fully given up on living yet (or were fighting against death out of spite) even though their wounds were more severe.
