-----------------------------------------------------
Footsteps echoed down the dim hallway. Shuichi's footsteps, to be exact. Careful, fearful steps, like each step could be his last, because it quite literally could be.
He thought about what he knew to try and put the pieces together. Rantaro, Ryoma, and Kokichi all went into the third floor of the school- er, the Sanzu Garden together to find their afternoon locks, and the weapons maker and Kokichi made it back to the dorms. According to them, Rantaro had fallen into a pit trap, and they hadn't been able to find him since. Now, after everyone else had their afternoon challenge completed, Shuichi and Kaito had been chosen to try to find Rantaro.
So far, they'd found nothing but more traps- and one of Rantaro's locks, completed. At least he'd be safe for the night, wherever he was.
Walking along the hallway, Shuichi heard a click from inside the walls, and- a dart flew by him, narrowly missing his cheek.
If I had been just a bit off, he thought, that would've gone right through my eye. And Monokuma said the traps wouldn't kill us. That statement seemed less true by the day.
Luckily, that had been one of the smaller traps, as they ranged from small projectiles being thrown to walls crashing against each other with a person in between. He looked around at the walls of the hallway, searching for signs of human interaction, when something caught his eye.
A red spot on the floor.
Many red spots, actually, making a clear trail down the hall and around a corner.
There were no traps around here that he knew of that could make a hole big enough to cause that much blood loss. They'd all either give you small cuts or kill you in a second. And Rantaro kept first aid supplies on him, so the violinist doubted he'd go that long without stopping the blood.
Still, Kokichi had told him Rantaro's was the only lock on the third floor, and the way he was coming from was closest to the stairway, so…
Whoever came this way did it on purpose. And it wasn't to get their afternoon locks.
Shuichi ran through the hall and followed the red trail around the corner, to where it abruptly stopped over a tile of the floor. There were no traps besides the dart in that hall. Where had this person gotten their injury, then?
He slowed his pace, thinking more logically now. I should go back and get Kaito, that way we'll keep each other in sight in case this trail leads somewhere bad.
But he could be anywhere on this floor by now, and I don't know if that trap'll activate again because it's right at my eye level, and was that liquid in the dart, now that I'm thinking more in detail about it? Could it be a tranquilizer dart, or a poisonous one? And- okay, pull yourself together, Shuichi.
Out of sheer stubbornness, he decided to keep following the trail by himself, and walked slowly along the blood trail until he reached the tile it stopped at.
Hmm.
Maybe whoever was injured had stopped here to treat their wounds a bit if the pain had gotten to be too much. Or they could've turned around and gone back. Kokichi did say he knew Rantaro's lock was the only one on the floor. Maybe he had done some exploring and gotten hurt on accident, or maybe-
His thoughts were cut off by a sudden lack of ground beneath his feet.
Or maybe the injured person had fallen into a pitfall trap right at this very spot.
He screamed in surprise at the fall and heard a voice from above him, far away, and loud footsteps. "SHUICHI?!"
Yeah, he should've told Kaito.
The panels to the trap shut, leaving him to fall in total darkness and silence.
It was both peaceful and stressful, the feeling of not knowing where you'd land or when, nothing but darkness and your own thoughts and the stomach-churning sensation Shuichi found out was easy to get used to, and-
BANG.
A-
A gunshot?
From somewhere below him, there was a gunshot. And now, light began to clear up the darkness, revealing cold metal walls around him. There were more gunshots, louder, more frequent. What kind of place does this lead to?
With a thump, he landed on a thick mattress, oddly out of place in the room he landed in, which was made of blank white concrete walls covered in chipping, moldy wallpaper. He saw no guns nor sparks or bullets flying, but the sound of gunshots was everywhere, exploding in his eardrums so that he had to block his ears if he wanted to concentrate. Cardboard boxes sat in varying stacks and piles in the corners of the room. There were no holes in them, Shuichi saw, so could there just not be- he walked out into the middle of the room. Sure enough, the sound was just coming from a hidden speaker, and there were no real guns.
Now, how to get out of this room?
The cardboard boxes were most likely there for a reason. They could be traps, but they could also serve as a way to escape. He decided to investigate them first.
Picking a random box off a stack in the nearest corner, he noticed something. Something green. And curled into a tight ball, letting out whimpers that could barely be heard over the noise from the speakers.
It was- He was Rantaro. Much, much different than how he acted around the others, but Rantaro nonetheless. What was going on?
"Some rooms will lock you in and whisper your worst fears to you."
This was one of those rooms, wasn't it? Designed for Rantaro, for sure. And it couldn't just be the gunshot noise that triggered him so badly, since he'd talked so much about his feats in war before. The room probably had something to do with his fear. No wonder he was hiding in a fort of small brown boxes.
"Rantaro!"
Nothing. His voice was still quieter than the background noise.
"RANTARO!!"
The medic seemed paralyzed for a second, then slowly turned his head towards Shuichi.
"You have to snap out of this, Ra-"
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! GET DOWN, OR YOU COULD GET SHOT!"
Tears were streaming down his usually confident face as he said this.
"No! You have to listen, Rantaro!" The violinist crouched down next to the stack of boxes.
"None of what you're thinking about is real. There are speakers in the walls, they're making the sound of gunshots. I don't know what this place is, but as far as I know it can't hurt you. You're safe, alright? You're safe."
Rantaro was still hyperventilating.
"Hey, hey. Calm down. Everyone's waiting back at the dorms. We've been really worried for you. That's how I ended up here, by falling through the same trap you did."
The shots in the background became softer and softer as Shuichi explained their situation casually, until they eventually faded away into nothingness. Apparently the mastermind was done with this twisted torture.
A door opened at the opposite side of the room.
The curled-up figure had slowed his breathing some, but was still panicking.
"...It. It stopped."
"Huh. It did."
And it took quite a lot of convincing, but, not very long after the noises stopped, the two walked to the door, Rantaro holding the other's hand tightly for security.
"Oh, right! Have you tended to your wound yet? If not, we ought to fix that now before getting back to the others."
"...Wound? What wound?" Rantaro asked, checking his body for any wound he could've forgotten about.
"Well, there was a trail of blood leading to the door here, so I thought it might be your-"
Wait.
Wait, wait, wait.
If Rantaro really had been taken by surprise and fallen here, he wouldn't have had time to fix himself up until he finished falling, which would mean-
But there wasn't any blood on the mattress or the floor at all.
"I followed the trail too. Thought I could find someone suspicious, since no other locks were on that floor and the trail led away from my lock."
"Uh, wait… then if it wasn't you or Kokichi… whose blood trail was that?"
Guess who's going on an amasai writing binge

There was a blade pressed against Shuichi's throat.
It had all happened so quickly. He had gone to check on the medic in the warehouse, and-
And there was a hand on his wrist, and a sudden falling, and a weight on his chest so that he could just barely breathe if he made his breaths shallow enough. And there was the sharp, bitter sting of the knife at his throat.
Shuichi was going to die, just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. All because of- he looked up at his killer's face- Rantaro?
Rantaro?
But-
But he was our leader, the person most dedicated to ending the game, the violinist thought. We trusted him more than we trusted ourselves and each other.
It was all an act, then, huh? He got us to trust him, and now he's going to kill me and escape, probably.
He looked up at the green-haired man's face again. His eyes were wild, feral, as if he was driven by instinct rather than his morals. An idea came to Shuichi. Could... Monokuma have brought back the Despair Disease? No, I'd think that repeating the same motive twice would be too boring for Monokuma... Then, did Rantaro have it all this time since looking after the patients, and managed to fool even the mastermind into thinking he didn't have it?
The blade pressed closer to Shuichi's neck, and he felt warm blood slide down onto the floor beneath him.
This was not the Rantaro he knew.
Memories of the previous trial came flooding to him, of Himiko's dismembered body, the blood spilling in a scarlet puddle on the tile, stained weapons scattered around, Angie's crazed face when the others figured out she had the Bloodlust Disease. The man above Shuichi looked like that now, ruined by his own Bloodlust Disease.
He was going to die.
Shuichi was going to die.
Hesitantly, he looked the medic in the eyes. "R-Rantaro?"
Time seemed to stop for a moment.
Rantaro's breathing slowed. Shuichi felt the blade slip away from him, and the medic put what Shuichi could now see was a scalpel in his pocket.
Rantaro let out a sigh, shut his eyes, and stood back up, turning to face whatever he'd been doing before. He paused and, without looking back, tossed an alcohol wipe from his pocket to Shuichi.
"Sorry. I thought you were going to kill me. Use this, it'll clean up the wound, and there's plenty of bandages in my lab," he said nonchalantly.
"You... You thought I was going to kill you?!"
The blonde boy stood.
"Dont think I'm gonna forgive you that easily, Rantaro."
"Fine."
"I... I COULD HAVE DIED!!'
"If you're just going to yell at me, go work your issues out with Kiyo. I'm the medic here, not the therapist."
He turned his head to look at Shuichi.
"Besides," he said in a stern yet ominous whisper, "it's not like I havent killed anyone before."
Shuichi froze in terror. "W-Wha-"
"Even medics have to kill to survive, sometimes. War is war. I'm not the only one, either. Most of us have been the cause of another's death, in one way or another. We're all killers, Shuichi. Killers all crammed into one place, under circumstances that mean we can't help but distrust each other, no matter how much we try to tell ourselves we have allies. Reminds me of the battlefield, now that I think about it."
What... was Rantaro saying?... They couldn't... trust anyone, that was true, but...
He took a few cautious steps toward the doorway and was going to leave, when he heard the medic speak again.
"Hey, Shuichi?"
"What?"
"You said you won't forgive me, right?"
"Um, yeah."
"See what I mean?"
"What?"
"You see, Shuichi,
"There's no forgiveness on the battlefield."

-----------------------------------------------------
Rantaro Amami, the one the others all knew as the Ultimate War Medic, wandered the halls of the school he'd known for just a couple weeks but that already felt like a home. Not that he'd really miss this place, once his research paid off and they could finally end the killing game for good. He just liked to enjoy the little good things in all this while they lasted, like Miu and Kirumi's homemade breakfasts and Kaito's dumb card game. Like the time they all changed into comfortable clothes to spite Monokuma. Like when Miu and Angie teamed up to paint memories for those who couldn't let them go. Like the occasional therapy meetings they could always count on to raise their hopes. Those one-on-one sessions with...
Korekiyo.
Tsumugi's kille-
No. The medic stopped himself. It won't matter, past tomorrow. We'll create an unsolvable mystery, him and I, and the mastermind will have no choice but to reveal themselves. And when that happens, all of us will stop this cruel game together, and we'll be free to escape and live our lives as we want. Whether that be together or not.
It was then that the sound of his footsteps was accompanied by another, softer sound. Violin. Shuichi's lab was abuzz with the music, most likely being played for himself or Kirumi. Rantaro creeped closer, not wanting his steps to overshadow the beautiful, hopeful melody.
He sat and leaned against the wall, sighing. This late at night, the music was welcome among the usual dead silence and despair in the halls. It was a light, a light that made the darkness around him feel... warm. Peaceful. Something he hadn't felt since the beginning of this cruel game.
It would all be over tomorrow.
So why not enjoy what's left today?
He had come this far, after all. He deserved a little break.
He shut his eyes and let the soft melody slowly lull him to sleep.
...
The blonde boy stepped carefully out of his lab for the night, not wanting to wake anyone up. Closing the door behind him, he realized a shadowy figure lay against the wall nearby. A body? A person waiting to kill him? The mastermind? His mind raced, but the shadow didn't move. He decided to investigate and saw... Rantaro? The person who'd been holed up in Ryoma's lab all these days, barely seen by the others? Out here in the open? And he was fast asleep, too. Not at all like how he normally acted.
If they wanted to, he thought, the mastermind could kill Rantaro right now, make it look like I or another person did it. He's so vulnerable out here, and he's an important part of our group, and- Shuichi sat down next to the medic, determined to keep watch over him for the night.
Although he must have fallen asleep sometime, he knew, or else he wouldn't have woken up with his head leaning on Rantaro's shoulder.
Made a oneshot for @amasaiweek Day 2: book/hot chocolate
[Beta AU Amasai Week Day 2]
tw: drug/drugging mention at the end
@kagazuly tagging for au credit
--------------------------------------------
"Hey, Shuichi, can ya do me a favor?"
The tan-haired boy turned from Kirumi to Miu, who was now holding a tray with a small saucer and a cup full of a steamy brown liquid.
"...Hot chocolate?"
"It's… for Rantaro. He's been studying all day, y'know? I kinda… kinda worry about him."
Don't we all? thought Shuichi before asking, "Well, why do I have to deliver it then? If you want to show him you're worried, give it to him yourself. I think that'd be the obvious solution.”
Miu pouted and turned to the ingredients strewn across the countertop. "I would, but, well, I made that on a whim, and me and Kirumi still have to finish making dinner, and by the time we finish it'll get cold, and…"
"And you're embarrassed to give it to him."
"Am not!!" Miu snapped back at Kirumi's smooth remark, shoving the tray into Shuichi's hands and shooing him out of the kitchen. "I just don't want him to think the wrong sorta things about this!"
"He told you himself he's aro-"
"That's not what I mean!! I mean I don't want him to think I'm babying him like I do with you guys and… and Kaz."
Shuichi let out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding. “It’s alright. If you don’t want to, I’ll take it to him. Do you want me to tell him it’s from you, or-“
“No, just say Kirumi made hot chocolate for everyone.”
“Okay.” He smiled and set off to find the medic.
He decided to check Rantaro’s lab first, assuming he’d be studying in there as he did often. But when he knocked on the door to the lab there was no response. It was even unlocked, which started to worry the violinist a bit before he looked around and saw nothing out of place. Wherever Rantaro was now, he had gone there in a rush, most likely, and thankfully it looked like nobody had been in here since then.
The knocks on his dorm room door were also met with silence, except this door was locked. He could be in there, Shuichi thought. They could never really figure out his thought process, after all. Regardless, he decided to check a few more possible study rooms before giving up.
Just the library and the pavilion outside are left, he thought, his hand already on the doorknob to his second-to-last destination. He was starting to regret looking in other rooms. The chocolate was already getting lukewarm. He turned the handle and entered.
Shuichi couldn’t believe it. Here, after all his searching, the medic sat in the center of the library, reading and annotating a book from a large stack next to him. Normally Rantaro did his work in secret or at least alone. But for him to be here, in such an obvious place… Could he actually be starting to trust the others?
It was awkward, both of them realized, the green-haired boy looking up at his guest.
Shuichi cleared his throat. “Ahem, uh, Kirumi… made hot chocolate for everyone. You want any?” He now understood why Miu dumped this job on him. He, too, would give anything to get away from this embarrassing moment.
Rantaro looked back at his book nonchalantly. “‘M not thirsty. Go give mine to someone else,” he mumbled, waving the violinist away.
“Rantaro…”
The medic made a few more scribbles in the book with a pen.
“Rantaro, we’re all worried about you, you know.” Shuichi said softly.
He shot out of his reading suddenly with a seemingly normal smile on his face, though Shuichi could see he had slight eye bags. “It’s fine, it’s fine. I’m fine. You guys don’t need to worry about me. I’ll see you at dinner, ok?” After this brief remark, he got right back to studying.
Shuichi placed the tray on the desk anyways, and left without a word. He wished Rantaro could understand the others, but, well, the guy was a war medic. How much could he really trust them after only a week or two? In fact, the violinist thought, he probably studied out in the open this time because it wasn’t important stuff, or he could have just been faking the whole time, obsessing over the mastermind again. Rantaro didn’t trust them. He never would, most likely, until they stopped the person behind this all. It made sense, but… there was just a part of Shuichi that wanted to trust everyone, even if that trust was a lie at its core. Something Rantaro could never consider, it seemed like. For a war medic, the boy sure was a mystery. One that he wasn’t really sure he wanted to try to solve.
That evening, Rantaro did fulfill his promise, showing up for dinner just as he had said. He brought the tray with the cup and saucer back, too and- was that cup empty?
He probably dumped it out in the bathroom or something, Shuichi thought, knowing the medic couldn’t have actually wanted to drink that uncomfortably semi-warm drink while busying himself with his research, even if that research was fake. And yet, something about Rantaro looked and felt off. As if his actions now were genuine. As if he was truly glad to be here, truly energized despite his previously miserable state.
The violinist heard a faint whisper behind him that he never would’ve guessed was aimed at him had he not felt the quick poke of Miu’s fingernail on his back. “The trick worked, don’tcha think? Rantaro just needed some sleep, I could tell.”
“What are you talking about?” he mumbled back.
“Oh, stealing a single sleep-inducing pill when the lab’s unlocked and mixing it into a drink to make that stubborn medic get the sleep he needs? Never something I’d think of doing. Never.”
Shuichi nearly cracked up. He could just barely stop himself from even laughing a little at the plan. And from what he’d seen, it worked. Rantaro was definitely suspecting Kirumi of something now, but at least he was more energetic, more human. Miu was right, he definitely needed some sleep before, even though he insisted he didn’t.
“You really gave him a taste of his own medicine, huh?” Shuichi said, letting out a small chuckle.
“Well, you’re the one who gave it to him. I could say the same about you. Oh, and have fun being on his watch list for a while.”
“You too.”
The two of them giggled more at their dumb quips, Shuichi still watching Rantaro. The medic laughed at something Kokichi said that Shuichi couldn’t hear from so far away, and a calm smile made its way onto the violinist’s face.

SPOILERS FOR PSYCHONAUTS 2 (CASSIE O’PEIA’s MIND):
This reminds me a lot of Cassie O’Peia from Psychonauts 2. Her mind is really interesting because in her mind we get to learn about Archetypes, which are different personality facets that people can/will use for different aspects or people in their life.
In Cassie’s case, she used whatever archetype she needed for her survival. She stole money and she was a snitch, but she needed to do that to get out of the poverty she was in and flee her country. She became a writer to help fund her escape, and her book was a universal bestseller.
And yet. In the battle against Maligula, she used her power, her words, her voices, her facets. And they weren’t enough. And she lost. And she resigned herself to the forest where she and her friends used to do research together. And she became a recluse.
She and the other psychic six were so mentally ruined after that battle that parts of them cracked and they were hollow shells of what they used to be.
Anyways, idk if this means anything to you, but you should totally check out Psychonauts if you haven’t already, it’s so cool.

Sorry guys, I’m V3 ranting again (because I’m playing it rn and noticing things shsndjsj)
This time the rants are Kaede flavored!!!
(Shuichi gets mentioned but he’s not the focus so I won’t tag him (it’s also like mainly pictures and then two paragraphs of actually mentioning something but shhhh))
I find it SO INTERESTING that Kaede has the same exact thoughts before and after the memory wipe regarding her situation!
Even Shuichi freaks out the same when he sees her (however she shuts him down much earlier (and nicer) than before), ending up with them both apologizing to each other similarly to before (not exactly the same but similar enough that I think I should mention it).
This is honestly so interesting to me. She’s similar to before even within her thoughts and actions (at least in this part lol), but she just has that extra flair of fiction and piano added onto her.
So spoilers for DRV3 under the cut AJWJDKDK
Why is it that when people make pregame content they forget about how they acted in the prologue? Like obviously if you wanna write them like that go ahead but it confuses me on how that’s the MAJORITY. I think it stems from the audition tapes at the end of the game but that’s always seemed strange to me.
Like I’ve seen most people write pregame Kaito as an absolute dick who would beat up people regularly (basically a bully), but we don’t really see that in the prologue. In the prologue, we don’t get much sure, but from what we do see, he’s not acting brash or rude at all. If I remember right, he even sounds worried (or is at the very least still panicked about the situation) when he questions if Kaede and Shuichi were chased by “that monster” (exisals). Sure, we don’t really know his thoughts for that line but you don’t really say that if you care for nobody but yourself (in my opinion at least).
(I REMEMBERED RIGHT LETS GOOO)
This isn’t even mentioning Kokichi, who acts so different from fanon pregame like what. Pregame Kokichi is usually characterized as a whiny teen who can’t handle confrontation and is an extreme introvert. But one of his few lines in the prologue is him volunteering to go back out (where they all just ran for their lives) to see what’s happening before getting shut down for his safety. And he doesn’t say it scared either, he says it pretty calmly (not saying he’s calm but he’s clearly not panicking nearly as bad as people portray him).
(I know his name (and Kaito’s earlier) is question marks but it is his voice when he says it please believe me lol)
Honestly, it kinda bums me out that not a lot of people take the prologue into account! Sure, Kaito’s audition tape makes him look like a violence hungry jerk; however, it wouldn’t surprise me if he (and everyone else) was just exaggerating to try and get picked. If you liked a show, and you want to be in it, you wouldn’t say “yeah I find this show cool, killing looks okay on screen but I think it could be fun.” You wouldn’t get picked (or at least have a lower possibility). They probably acted more like what they thought Team Danganronpa would want for their show.
Anyways, sorry for how long that was (especially considering I don’t make posts like this ever???) but I was replaying V3 earlier and it just occurred to me. Like even Kaede is meaner than Kaito in the prologue (she tells Shuichi to shut up when he starts panicking lmao (she apologizes later tho)). That’s not even mentioning Shuichi but this is already long and probably full of punctuation errors lol. Sorry if it got incoherent at all. I’m very tired.
TL;DR Fanon pregame DRV3 doesn’t usually take into account how the character acted in the prologue and it bothers me.
(Again, if you like to characterize them that way, that’s fine. Everyone has headcanons and such. I’m just expressing some of my thoughts :D)
one of these freaks is not like the others
I decided I was going to redesign this lil rat man for fun! I might redesign others, but for now it’s just Kokichi!
What's with the guys who are assholes in media are always purple, smile almost 24/7 and are associated with circuses🧍♀️
