Ideas/Concepts for Dusttale: Reanimated

As I stated in a previous post, I’m gonna be doing a my sort of own spin on Dusttale on the side.

I’m first gonna start in character profile & information in regards to the story, as well as building their character. While the main characters from Undertale are relevant to this story, it’s actually gonna focus more on the NPCs, plus my OC Vani.

I’m planning on doing a character info & status sheet (like something found in infection AUs) along with a picture of how they’ll look. I’ll be doing the same to the reanimated monsters, or as I’ve been calling them “the Revived”.

If anyone has any better name suggestions for the AU or for the classification of the characters.

While working on the headshot rough drafts for the AU variants of Neue, I’m also brainstorming on some concepts for, I guess a reimagining of a few AUs. This is not me trying to “improve” the original AU, it’s just me wanting to have some fun & doing my take of other AUs.

This is gonna be a veeeeeerrry looooong post.

The main 2 I’ll be working on are Horrortale & Dusttale.

I wanted to get opinions & suggestions for these concepts before delving too deep into these ideas. Please tell your thoughts on this & if I need to change/improve on.

Horrortale will be more appearance-based, meaning that I won’t be doing a lot of story building & it’s more of just redesigning the characters to look more “monstrous”. Basically they’ll be more animalistic or feral & their bodies would have gone through heavy changes to “adapt”.

*This is literally an excuse to draw the characters as big & scary horror movie style “monsters”. I guess this would make it similar to the Underworld AU, but the story or origin for the change would be similar to Horrortale, but takes place even further after the Neutral Route*

For right now, I’ve been calling this AU of an AU: Feral!Horrortale. But a few others are Dwellertale/Underdwell, Undercave/Cavetale, Carnitale & or Undermaw.

I’ve written a few ideas for their overall appearance based on Nocturnal & Cave-Adapted animals. I won’t list all of them otherwise this post will be way too long, but here are a few:

Eyes

Will become bigger

Pupils will become extremely dilated

Will become blind, either with cloudy Pupils or losing their eyes completely

Mouth

Jaw becomes much stronger

Able to be unhinged

Senses

Becomes extremely sensitive to light

Scent of smell & hearing will become much more heightened

May develop echolocation due to loss of sight

General Appearance

Depending on location, those in colder areas will become bigger, while those living in hotter areas will become smaller

Aging will slow down, longer lifespan

Psychological Changes

Will become much more aggressive & animalistic/feral

Start to communicate through nonverbal communication: clicking, chirps, barks, croaks, etc.

These are just a few of concepts for this version of Horrortale.

For Dusttale, it’ll be more story-based, but will have some illustrations here & there. The main differences is that Vani would be from this version & would detail an alternate ending for Vani, also this version would include Sans being “hired” to work for Nightmare.

Now before I go on about the basic concept for this AU, I’ll need to explain a few things first:

Sans’s Killing Spree: I don’t know if in the original he killed all monsters (I kept getting mixed answers or no answers at all), but in this version he only killed most monsters. There were a few that were able to get away & hide before Sans could get them; Sans only wanted to get enough EXP to reach LV 19 or 20 (I can’t decide which one yet). Vani, & probably characters like Monster Kid, Napstablook & Mettaton (Ghost Form), would be one of these survivors.

*As a side note: Papyrus in this AU is an actual ghost & not a hallucination, but I’ll go over that in another post*

Frisk & Chara: In this AU, Frisk & Chara are basically “organic” A.I. attached to a “Real World Anchor” aka Frisk’s body/vessel. Chara was the original concept for the “Fallen Human”, but was scrapped due to them being too “independent & free-willed”. Frisk is the current concept prototype for the “Fallen Human”, made from original data & a blank template; however bits of Chara’s A.I. was used as filler for missing information within Frisk’s A.I., this causes Chara to appear as a glitched phantom (good example of this would be Glitchtrap from FNaF Help Wanted). Chara has little to no control over Frisk, instead they can only give “suggestions” to hopefully influence Frisk’s actions.

The Player: The Player is depicted/described as a higher entity or deity, they could be seen as the “Angel” sent to create peace between humans & monsters (this is based off the theory that the rune we see throughout the game is a depiction of 2 monsters, a human & an angel). The Player at the beginning of the route will have minimal control over Frisk, mainly able to give “directions or actions” that Frisk should follow. But the more EXP that is gained, the more control the Player will have over Frisk. This could cause a total takeover with the Player “ejecting” the A.I. from the anchor aka vessel.

How Did Vani Survive: In the most simplistic way of describing: she can’t die, her soul will automatically heal itself/her. Now in further details: Vani was born with (what I’ll be calling for now) a glitched soul; this causes the soul to look, well glitched out. However it has an ability to automatically heal itself & its body, but not through the usual way; via magic or healing items. Whenever Vani takes damage, the soul will “reload” her back to the point/time & placement right before she takes damage; however the world around her is not affected or altered by this ability, to everyone around her: she looks like she’s “lagging” or “glitching”. Fortunately, or more like unfortunately, this ability is automatically & Vani is unable to “deactivate” it; it use to be super over efficient (would activate if Vani took 1HP or less), but started to calm down has Vani got older (would activate if Vani loses half or more). Even if her HP reaches 0, the soul will activate its ability & essentially “resurrect” Vani; this is what happened when Sans was trying to kill her.

Ok now that that’s out of the way, the basic concept of this AU is…

BRINGING BACK THE DEAD!!!

Or Vani & the remaining monsters tried to improve on the artificial DETERMINATION to resurrect the fallen monsters. But it still causes them to melt, but can gain stability by “merging” with other monsters or inanimate objects (sticks, plants, sturdy clothing, etc.).

This obviously a huge info dump, but I’m super excited about this & I wanted to get everyone’s opinion or suggestion before I go too deep in.

Neue AU Headshot Rough Drafts: Albus

Albus is basically from Underswap: Blueberry Flavored, which is just a longer way of saying he’s from the “Fanon” Underswap (Blueberry) rather than the “Canon” Underswap (Blue or Swap).

Neue AU Headshots Rough Draft: Merriweather

So I mentioned in a previous post that I’ll be adding some “joke” AUs to story regarding the Star/Bad Sanses & Neues. The AUs im referring to are Fanon Underswap (the one with Blueberry or as I call him “Bluwubewwy”) & Yandere Underswap (the one with Yanberry). Which means that I’ll be make Neue variants for these AUs, I’m actually gonna use a beta design of Underswap Neue for one of these.

I didn’t like the original design that I had for her, so I’m gonna be making some changes. It’s kinda hard to see in the headshot, but her hair is now in a high ponytail & I want to change her dress into a more “adventure/knight” themed outfit, so she has armor & a cape.

I wanted her to have a more “Energetic & playful, but mature & serious” vibe, since she would be next in line to become Queen (I’m basing this after the Neutral Route) & she’s fighting along side her father against the Bad Sanses & Neues.

Neue AUs Headshots Rough Draft: Neue

So I’m working on doing headshots for the different AU variants of Neue.

I’m mainly want to work on the head/facial areas of the characters, & figure out how I want their appearance (hair, eyes, horns, ears, etc.) to look like.

I’m going to do 2 headshot rough drafts each character: one with a simple hair/horn design & one with a more detailed hair/horn to match the goat breed they’re based on.

I don’t know if it looks like it, but I was trying to give him curly hair since the wool coat looks curly to me (I also had to look up what mohair was).

I’m going to be changing the eyes to normal pupil lights instead of the goat pupil, since it looks more “natural”. However there will be a few characters that will still have it.

AU Neues & Concept Idea

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, but I was doing some “research” for basically a “my take” of an AU, specifically Horrortale. But I also tried to revamp my list AUs that I want to draw Neue in, mainly AUs regarding the Bad & Star Sanses.

I’m currently working on a yearbook style headshots for all the AUs that I’m gonna draw Neue in (25 in total 🙃).

However, I wanted to discuss more about a story or slice of life headcanon for the “Sanses” & “Neues” within the Bad & Star Sanses, along with a few others that the Neues are friends with.

I’m also gonna include some “Neues” who will have a bigger main role, but will eventually become more side/background characters: specifically Epictale & Underkeep Neue.

There’s another AU variant that’ll be included, Georgia or Gigi (Underlust Neue) which was inspired by @vantriloquist for Passion & Plum! I have a few ideas for him.

Basically it’s gonna be going over the “home-life” of the Bad Sanses & Neues, what they were like when they first got there, how their relationship works, & just generally more character building for my OCs.

I have posted some rough drafts for a few of the AUs listed above, but I’m definitely gonna be doing some touch ups/redesign once I get their personalities figured out.

It’s gonna generally revolve around Crimson (Horrortale Neue), Vani (Dusttale Neue), Sabon (Killer AU Neue) & Gisha (X-Tale Neue); with bits of Merrriweather (Underswap Neue) & Canvas (Blank Template Neue). I might include Eras & Lucida (Dreamtale “Neues”) along with a few joke “AUs” of an AU.

Update & Upcoming Artwork

Sorry I haven’t posted anything Undertale related for a month, I was taking a break then got super into another fandom so started to work on art for that, then I took another break and then I got sick for almost 2 weeks.

So for a long story short: I basically took a long break to rethink some things.

I think I got a bit overwhelmed with the amount of characters/AU variations that I ended up burning out.

But now, I’m gonna start on a project revolving around Neue AU Variants based on the Star Sanses and Bad Sanses. This will include the following:

-Eras (“Son”/Student of Dream)

-Lucida (“Daughter”/Student of Nightmare)

-Merriweather (Daughter of Underswap Sans)

-Crimson (Son of Horrortale Sans)

-Gisha (Child of Cross Sans)

-Vani (Daughter of Dust Sans)

-Sabon (Son of Killer Sans)

-Canvas (Student of Ink Sans)

Along with a few more.

Obviously for a few of these I haven’t completed their rough drafts yet, but for the ones I did, I’ll be redrawing/redesigning their appearances.

I didn’t have a lot of ideas for Century, just that I wanted him to look similar to Neue & Avenir.

However, Vani & Sabon were a bit easier since I already had ideas for their clothing. I was trying to give Vani & Sabon almost Chara & Flowey vibes with their outfits.

Here is an updated Height chart for the AU Neues.

It was interesting to see the colored versions next to each other. I found the size differences to be funny, especially with the tallest one (Crimson) being in the same picture with the shortest one (Miriam).

What Kind Of Clothing Should Neue & AU Variants Wear?

So I’m working on the final body lineart of each variant, mainly figure out their body types and totally not procrastinating on drawing their clothes cause I suck at drawing clothes.

Anyway, while I do have some ideas regarding clothing, I’m still having some trouble for most of them.

Basically as the title states, what kind of clothing should Neue and AU variants wear?

Dusttale Neue Rough Draft

Dust Neue’s name is “Vani”.

Here is the rough draft:

She is based off the Orobica Goat.

She’s a bit shorter than Neue, and I based her hair off the beta/pilot design of Luz from Owl House.

I know that realistically, she would not exist in this universe (for obvious reasons), but basically she lives because of magic plot armor which I’ll explain on her character sheet.

I died for a couple of months in the summer since my interests started shifting but ehh you cant really tell that much from here. I put in a couple of drawings I didnt really finish or didn’t really like so you shall never see the full picture😌
