Why do so many cephalopods die immediately after reproducing?
Okay so the physical reason is that mating triggers a change in their brain chemistry and hormone levels that essentially poisons them and makes them behave strangely and stop eating. If the gland responsible for this change is removed, the cephalopod continues as normal and lives for many months after laying eggs.
But the evolutionary reason is the end-Cretaceous extinction. Cephalopods used to have a pretty huge variation in lifespan, ranging from a few months to over 200 years (https://www.iflscience.com/ancient-paperclipshaped-sea-creature-could-live-for-200-years-57685)
Large, long-lived cephalopods were hit hard by the mass extinction and those who survived did so by being short-lived and reproducing quickly, so they were selected for as cephalopods recovered from the extinction event. The most ancient species, the nautilus, can live for several decades and mate many times, hinting at the high diversity of life strategies that cephalopods used to have.
So yeah, the reason octopuses usually only live a year or two before self-destructing is because of that fucking asteroid.

Now, to help the man that accidentally spilled his coffee drink on my texan dad's shirt, I said that he was a dear friend of mine and that he didn't do that on purpose.
My dad looked at me as if I killed his dog Roofus. Acting as if I was innocent, I look back at him and say "What's up? You're surely not mad just because of a mere shirt getting dirty, are you? Come on now dad! Can you go inside and get me a cappuccino please?" by now I was only rambling. But nonetheless my dad nodded at the man and went inside.

You know what Bernie Sanders would be? The first Jewish President. And alongside that (though it goes without saying) the first non-Christian President.
In a country dominated by Christians, run on their values, and where ‘because the bible says so’ is considered a valid political argument, that’s just as important (if not moreso) as a female president. And while its not ever been as prevalent as racism or mysoginy, antisemitism has played a role in American history (and Western history in general), so this would also be a way to push away from that.
Just thought I’d point this out, since no one seems to be talking about it.
So funky fact~ the Votann symbol on the front is from a Major League, the Trans-Hyperian Alliance which has the main color of orange hence the orange cover.
The insignia of the Trans-Hyperian Alliance is a stylised Kin glyph. So yes it is a language but also it's not a real language, it would be awesome if they released a Kin glyph dictionary eventually but one could only hope.
I don't know why they picked blue as the other color, it is not really a flattering combo with orange. Orange and Black would of been amazing but what you can do eh?
Now that I got around to seeing the announcement article for the book, I must say that this is a, uh... bold choice in terms of visuals?
Don't get me wrong it looks 100% better than the shovelware-looking garbage they put on the regular Horus Heresy covers for example, but... dang this does look a bit random. My guess is that its the main character's faction colors and symbol? It just looks a lot like a stylized kanji, so I really hope GW didn't by accident put something really dumb on their book from a chinese or japanese perspective...

Dr. Beach’s Top 10 Beaches of 2021
For more than 30 years, Dr. Beach, aka Dr. Stephen Leatherman, has created an annual Top 10 Beach list. A professor and coastal geomorphologist at Florida International University, Dr. Beach factors in 50 different criteria including water color, sand softness, wave size, water temperature and more.
As we get ready to launch Landsat 9 this fall, we’re taking a tour of Dr. Beach’s Top 10 US beaches of 2021 as seen by Landsat 8.
10. Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Coast Guard Beach is located just north of the remote Nauset Inlet on Outer Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Except for the picturesque old white Coast Guard station that still sits atop the glacial bluffs, there is no development here; the best way to reach this beach is by bicycle from the Salt Pond Visitor’s Center or shuttle bus.
First mapped by Champlain in 1605, the shifting sands of this inlet are clearly visible in the Landsat image. This location is also at the point where the glacial sea cliffs transcend into a barrier beach (e.g., sand spit) that provides protection for the lagoon and development of lush salt marshes.
“In my early days as a Professor at Boston University and later at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, I spent many summer and some winter-time days conducting scientific studies along this barrier beach.” – Dr. Beach

9. Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, South Carolina
Beachwalker Park is a public beach located on the southern part of Kiawah Island, South Carolina. This barrier island in the Charleston area is 10-miles long and features a fine grained, hard-packed beach that can be traversed easily by bicycle.
This Landsat image shows a huge accumulation of sand as a series of shoals on the south end of the island, which can be reached from Beachwalker Park. These sandy shoals will eventually coalesce, becoming an extension of the sand spit that is the south end of Kiawah Island.
“In the early 2000s, I served as the beach consultant to the Town of Kiawah Island because their world-famous golf course on the north end was being threatened by severe erosion. It was necessary to artificially bypass some sand on the north end of the island so that the normal flow of sand along the island was reinstated, saving the outermost link of this PGA golf course.” – Dr. Beach

8. Coronado Beach, San Diego, California
Coronado Beach in San Diego is the toast of Southern California with some of the warmest and safest water on the Pacific coast. This 100-meter-wide beach is an oasis of subtropical vegetation, unique Mediterranean climate, and fine sparkling sand.
The harbor serves as a major port for the Navy’s Pacific fleet, the home port for several aircraft carriers. The docks and the crossing airplane runways for the Naval base are visible in this Landsat image.

7. Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin Clearwater, Florida
Caladesi Island State Park is located in the small town of Dunedin on the Southwest Florida coast. The stark white undeveloped beach is composed of crystalline quartz sand which is soft and cushy at the water’s edge, inviting one to take a dip in the sparkling clear waters.
While island is still in the Park’s name, Caladesi is no longer a true island as shown on the Landsat image--it is now connected to Clearwater Beach.
“Caladesi is located in the Tampa area, but it seems like a world away on this getaway island.” – Dr. Beach

6. Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Oahu, Hawaii
Duke Kahanamoku Beach is named for the famous native Hawaiian who was a big-board surfer and introduced surfing as a sport to mainland Americans and indeed the world.
One of the prominent features on this Landsat image is Diamondhead with its circular shape near the coast. This large cone of an extinct volcano provides the iconic backdrop for photos of Waikiki Beach.
“This is my favorite spot at the world-famous Waikiki Beach where you can both play in the surf and swim in the calm lagoonal waters.” – Dr. Beach

5. Lighthouse Beach, Buxton, Outer Banks of North Carolina
Lighthouse Beach in the village of Buxton is located at Cape Hatteras, the most northern cape in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This lifeguarded beach is the number one surfing spot on the US Atlantic Coast as the large offshore sand banks, known as Diamond Shoals, cause wave refraction focusing wave energy on this beach.
The Landsat image shows the seaward growth of south flank of Cape Hatteras as evidenced by the parallel lines of beach ridges.
“It is fun to walk down the narrow sand spit, more exposed at low tide, as waves are approaching from both directions because of the bending of the waves.” – Dr. Beach

4. St. George Island State Park, Florida Panhandle
St. George Island State Park, located on the Florida panhandle and far from urban areas, is a favorite destination for beachgoers, anglers and bird watchers as nature abounds. Like other beaches on the panhandle, this long barrier island has a sugary fine, white sand beach.
In this Landsat image, St. George can be seen north of the bridge that links this barrier island to the mainland. The enclosed bay behind St. George Island is fairly shallow and the water much less clear as shown on the Landsat image, but it is not polluted.
“Besides swimming in the crystal-clear Gulf of Mexico waters, I enjoy beachcombing and shelling. While this island was hit hard in 2018 by Hurricane Michael, it has substantially recovered as there was little development to be impacted.” – Dr. Beach

3. Ocracoke Lifeguard Beach, Outer Banks of North Carolina
Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach at the southern end of Cape Hatteras National Seashore was the first seashore to be incorporated into the National Park Service system.
The Landsat image shows Ocracoke to the north as separated by an inlet from Portsmouth Island. The village of Ocracoke was built at the wide area of the island where it was protected from oceanic waves during coastal storms which include both winter nor’easters and hurricanes.
“Ocracoke was once the home of the most infamous pirate Blackbeard and is still a very special place—my favorite getaway beach.” – Dr. Beach

2. Cooper’s Beach, Southampton, New York
Cooper’s Beach in the tony town of Southampton on the south shore of Long Island, New York is shielded from the cold Labrador current, making for a fairly long summer swimming season. The white quartz sand is medium to coarse grained with some pebbles, making the beach slope fairly steeply into the water.
This Landsat image shows the fairly large coastal pond named Mecox Bay to the east with Shinnecock Inlet and Bay also displayed to the west. Coopers Beach is hundreds of yards wide, made of grainy white quartz sand and is backed by large sand dunes covered by American beach grass.
“I spent several decades conducting scientific studies of this very interest oceanic shoreline because it is so dynamic and the beachfront real estate so expensive. Some of the most gorgeous and expensive residential houses in the United States are located in the world-famous Hamptons.” – Dr. Beach

1. Hapuna Beach State Park, Big Island Hawaii
Hapuna Beach State Park is a white coral sand beach that resides in a landscape dominated by dark brown lava flows on the Big Island of Hawaii. The crystal-clear water is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving during the summer months in contrast to winter big-wave days when pounding shorebreaks and rip currents make swimming impossible.
Hapuna and the other pocket beaches appear as an oasis in this otherwise fairly bleak landscape except for the areas irrigated as prominently shown on the Landsat imagery by the green vegetation.
“This volcanically active island is the only place that I know where you can snow ski at the high mountain tops and water ski in the warm ocean water on the same day.” – Dr. Beach

A Beginner's Guide to Astrology Charts
Here is a guide that might be helpful when you are interpreting an astrology chart. My favorite place to get a free chart online is Astro.com: http://www.astro.com/cgi/atxgen.cgi?btyp=apx& . The link I provided will have both a drawing of your chart and a list of all your planets and houses. When you are first learning how to read a chart, you might want to look at the list first. As you learn more, you can start figuring out how to interpret the chart drawing. All you have to do is input your birthdate, time (if you know it) and place of birth and it will provide you with a list of which sign is in each planet, and which sign/planet is in which house.
Here are a list of each planetary alignment and what it means for your personality:
Sun Sign - Your sun sign is the most commonly known astrology sign. When people tell you their sign, or when you read horoscopes in magazines or the newspaper, this is the sign they will probably use. The sun sign changes once a month. Right now the sun is in Cancer but is going into Leo soon. Your sun sign is your Egoic personality. It is how you most want to seem to others, and the image you portray in the world. It is kind of an umbrella to the rest of your personality, meaning it is an overall look at yourself. People who identify strongly with their sun sign often have the same sign in other parts of their chart. If you don’t feel like your sun sign fits you, that sign might not show up at all in your chart.
Moon Sign - Your moon sign is your inner self. It’s how you process emotions, and how you are when you are not concerned with outer appearances. Most children act more like their moon sign than their sun sign, and eventually pick up more qualities of their sun sign as they mature. People’s moon signs are a good way to look into their hidden selves. Unless you know someone really well, or if they are comfortable revealing emotions, you might not see any evidence of their moon sign in their personality. If someone’s sun sign is the same as their moon sign, their inner and outer self will be in harmony. The sign the moon is in changes every 3 or so days, so people born the same month who have the same sun sign might have a different moon sign.
Ascendant/Rising Sign - Rising signs are the sign that is coming up on the horizon at your time of birth. This changes every few hours, so you will need to know your exact birth time to find out your rising sign/ascendant (Rising sign, ascending sign, and ascendant all mean the same thing). The rising sign is how you come off to others. While the sun sign might be the image you wish to show to the world, the rising sign is the image you actually show to the world, particularly upon first appearance. In my studies, your rising sign depicts how the world first sees you, and in turn how you view the world. In esoteric astrology, your rising sign shows you where in a cycle of lifetimes you are - if your rising sign is Aries, you are on the first of a 12-lifetime cycle, and if your rising sign is Pisces you are on the last of this cycle. Some esoteric astrologers believe each lifetime you live cycles through rising signs in order. Your rising sign is also the sign that is in your first house.
Mercury sign - Your Mercury sign describes how you communicate with others. It also describes your learning style, and how you talk and write.
Venus sign - Your Venus sign describes how you pay attention to beauty, and how you are in relationships. I find that Venus signs also to some extent show what kind of people you are attracted to, and what your home and possessions tend to be like.
Mars sign - Your Mars sign depicts your amount of physical activity. Those with their Mars in fire signs and earth signs tend to be more active and athletic. Mars also relates to how you deal with anger and if you have a temper.
Jupiter sign - Jupiter is the planet of luck and outer success. Jupiter is an expansive planet, and so the sign is this part of your chart will show you how outward your success will be and how your luck will manifest in life. For instance, someone with Jupiter in Virgo would likely not be globally famous but would achieve luck and success through working on their own (Virgo is represented by the Hermit). On the opposite end, someone whose Jupiter is in Gemini would probably experience more outward fame or at least find luck when dealing with other people, because Gemini is a more social sign.
Uranus sign - Uranus is the mad scientist of the zodiac. It represents ingenuity, novelty and change. Whatever sign Uranus is in in your birth chart will show you what sort of changes will come up in your life.
Neptune sign - Your Neptune sign will show you what area of your life will be shrouded in illusion. I saw the term "fuckboy" for the first time today. Not directed at me (I have a strange aversion to women. Only reason I even met my last ex was through a coworker). Anyway, it seems I really missed the harbour for the ship from the land of retarded dirtbags. Part of me wonders if this was a latent characteristic in too large a percentage of men who just didn't have the proper outlet for their useless douchebaggery, or if social media/pop culture/etc. have, in part, spawned a new race of... Ick? Is that a good way to describe it? I'd say slimers, but that'd be kind of insulting to the Ghostbusters character. I've already admitted I made a lot of stupid mistakes in the couple relationships I had, but... damn... I hate one ex with what I'd hope is enough ferver to cause nuclear fusion, but I don't see how that should make me entitled to anything. Is this what it's come to, though? Some sense of entitlement solely because you're a male? Some girl didn't treat you right (or like you wanted)? CALL THE FUCKING WAAAAAHMBULANCE. Treat a woman how she wants to be treated. Is that such an arduous task? Yeah, Tinder and dating sites have a pretty good volume of people wanting sex. Does that mean EVERYONE on there is immediately, desperately, helplessly in such dire need for sexual contact they should all be subjected to... Ick? (I like the suspense from ellipses. It's like "Legen- -dary" It's a good buildup) I can feel my brain almost overheating trying to figure out just... Why? It's almost as difficult for me to fathom why there are so many money-obsessed fuckers in the world when a 30¢ bullet can make that money not mean shit anymore. Or as maddening as the totality of the universe, our complete lack of knowledge or thirst for exploration, and how utterly insignificant and useless we are (especially compared to a 30¢ bullet that can at least change something in the immediate area). I feel the gears siezing at the notion some guys think they're so integral to the operation of the planet, their dicks/looks/money/whatever are cause for any and every woman they want to strip down and fuck wherever they happen to be. I'm not religious. I hate religion for what it is and tends to do to many people. But, one thing that nearly every religion in existence has ever had in common is what most people call "the golden rule." I don't know why such a purely basic concept requires a gilded name (probably some bullshit about gold being worth something as currency), but is it that fucking hard to not be a fuck-shit stack? When did that concept devolve into "I show u mah dik u suld send nuds"? (My brain nearly hemorrhaged typing that) I'm trying to figure out what would happen if law enforcement and the justice system got their heads out of their asses and actually allocated time and funds to taking online sexual harassment and assault seriously. I think some fuckers would find themselves out their precious smartphone they use to prey on other women. See how fucking awesome they are with a flip phone and a name that is legally forbidden from online dating. (A fake name wouldn't work out in the long run) You know, maybe there should be a push for that. Banishment from social media as a legal function, not some shit to be ignored by moderators and businesses. There's got to be money enough in there somewhere for someone to run with it. I, for one, do not have that kind of money. Or, really, not much money in general. Food is too tasty for money. Money sounds most unpleasant as a meal or snack. Or drink. Goldschlager may be an exception; though, I cannot recall ever having it before. Where was I? Oh, yeah! JUST FUCKING CUT THE SHIT, YOU FUCK-SHIT STACKS. You have as much right to assault women's vision and emotions, as I have to assault your eyes with metal filings. No, those two are far more similar than you think. I'm not some dumbass white knight, some hero wannabe, some super-nice and sensitive guy women would be lucky to have. I'm neither conceited nor delusional. Learned from my mistakes. I might never be in a relationship again, never have sex again, whatever. At least I can say I'll have gone without being an utter fuckwit to any random woman who is connected via physical proximity or cyberspace.
