as a minor healing from c-ptsd, im really glad that there is a comic like laikas comet, and thank you so much for making it. it's kind of silly, but mars as a character means a lot to me. i don't have anyone like laika, so it's really comforting to see a story where i can imagine it was my life instead

in real life, 'mars' and 'laika' are less separate characters to me. i wrote this comics concept years ago now for myself, because i did not have a 'laika' either.

the story of laikas comet, in a less literal sense than the actual lore of the comic, is about the adult part of me approaching and deliberately trying to re-parent and heal the child part of me.

i dont love the saying 'nobody comes to save you' because it seems very gloomy, but i do sometimes think i do my own healing process a disservice through this story in that the person who saved me was not a 'laika', but i became her myself.

but that was only possible because i was willing to believe i was worthy of being happy, and moving toward that light. and when i decided to communicate my feelings through a story, and tried imagining what 'good' in the world looked like, it was a person like laika.

so, i guess what im saying is - you have a laika! a person who wants to see the good in the world and wants to make it a better place. that's inside you right now.

I love how the further I get into this fandom the more headcanons I give my gabe and v1 designs. At first they were just game accurate but now gabe has designs on his armor and feathered wings. V1 has an eye thing in his visor and honestly an overdone amount of wires everywhere. I love drawing these creatures they're like my muses ( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ )

ultrakill is a game about finding even small hope when everything seems inhospitably bleak.

swordsmachines modify themselves to become and keep what they find beautiful and mindflayers create a body that they love, even in a world where such bodily modifications do not serve a combative purpose and are resource-intensive.

sisyphus fought the forces of heaven alongside his brethren for all of their freedom knowing he would lose, since the very act of fighting against their oppressors was the ultimate rebellion in his eyes. and then proceeded to enter another fight he would lose without regret with v1.

even if the council which was indifferent towards the ferrymen surely would have had them destroyed, they sculpted idols out of compassion for the life that resides within them, and the idols use what power they have to protect others out of that same compassion.

gabriel destroyed the council by his own hand to give the residents of heaven the ability to choose their own fates and right the wrongs he had made, knowing very well that doing so would destroy his last chance at avoiding certain doom.

the player, knowing that soon hell will have no creatures from which to wring blood and sustain v1, travels anyway. every single retry of a level they love. every single retry to p-rank. becoming more proficient and stylish in the craft of ultrakilling, even if only by a little bit, each time.

2-S’s message of finding meaning in a seemingly uncaring universe doesn’t just apply to 2-S, but the whole series in small places. Even when it doesn’t seem possible, there is always a chance for something to be just a little better.

Radiant is ULTRAKILL, for it is full of lights in the darkness.

I might be reading too much into this but I feel like when artists make a piece focused on Gabriel, they tend to portray him in their vision of beauty, and you can tell that from the art. It's got some kind of personal taste that goes in there so he's always beautiful, but an artist's kind of beauty, and I feel like you can tell the artist thinks he is pretty too.

Like.... so many people like to draw him with different body types and it's always with a kind of respect and focus on his form, involving some kind of natural beauty and/or ethereal majesty. Especially when people draw him in a dress or with artistic nudity,,

He feels like an outlet for depicting beauty... Or I am crazy and I'm just attracted to him in the most aroace way possible.

This thing was.. an interesting challenge. Because the cool thing about skeletons is that they are not very good at being plushies; I could not find a single pre-existing pattern for a decent-looking skeleton when I was starting out and had to do everything from scratch, ended up going for a more puppet-like design. This thing hurt me in new and unique ways. Fun!

The actual sewing was like 10 times easier and faster than the V's, but figuring out how to actually make it work and look good was a pain. Worth it tho, I'm really happy with how he turned out. Can't wait to throw coins at him

6 Tips for Crossing the Road

Look both ways

The road is for cars. 

Make sure to look for them before crossing. Even when you have the right of way, cars have a lot of safety features and you have none. 

Use designated crosswalks 

The road is for cars. 

So is the crosswalk but, under brief and temporary conditions, you can use it too! Never jaywalk, never walk in the road, just hope there is a clear and functional sidewalk. 

Cross at the light

The road is for cars. 

There are rules and signs for them, but that can only go so far. Walk quickly and hold your breath and hope that the light doesn't turn. Make eye contact with drivers as their cars teem with potential energy, rumbling with disdain at the inconvenience of your crossing. Try to ignore the cloud of exhaust that you are in and they are above. 

Leash your pets

Obviously. 

To you, it may be natural to sacrifice so much space to them but to your dog, it is not. His instinct is to explore freely. You must curb it. Modern US car models have such high hoods that the average child, let alone dog, is obscured. Even on the sidewalk, hold the leash tight because the sidewalk (if you are so blessed) is next to the street and the threat still looms.

Look out for road kill

The road is for cars. 

And no one was there to leash the deer. 

Or the raccoon. 

Or the cat. 

Did you know that the most reliable sample method for wildlife in an area is looking at the roadkill?

Cars are everywhere because there are roads to bring them there, which is great if you are a car and want to get from place to place fast without worrying about the in-between. 

Unfortunately, you are not a car. 

You are an animal. 

You are in-between. 

So remember to look both ways.

anyways speaking of like. femininity affecting mirages behavior i want 2 talk abt her conformity to the norm

so here i find a really interesting relationship between the way mirage presents herself and the way she navigates the world. like its always been fascinating to me how mirage's identity as a woman, as the prettiest girl in town, is entirely performance. look here for a second:

in these two bits, mirage plays up her femininity to to the player's perception of her. mirage knows that the player doesn't know her well enough to have a strong opinion and quickly jumps to playing into one of two things when you first meet her. if you're generally nice to her, she leans into self-aggrandizement and almost uses her title/reputation as "the prettiest girl" like a tool to feel better about herself. if you're rude, she ramps up her aggression and leans Hard into the insults.

but all of these are just very exaggerated performance of what mirage believes she should be. it's pretty easy to tell that most of mirage's insults aren't really rooted in actual anger towards you - she's just pissed at you but she'll forgive easily. like you can choose to aggrieve her (refusing to help her up) and then immediately step back (admit you're lost too) and her mood fluctuates with yours. also she quite directly says that "Blowing off steam is just how [she] cope[s]"

so we know that mirage's anger is mostly her way of avoiding the despair and internal pain that comes with her nihilism. BUT what about her femininity? how does her presentation affect or indicate her character? ok see here

mirage says she doesn't care about school. she cares about nothing and nothing matters, she's gotten to the point where she doesn't give a damn what others think of her. basically, mirage is at a point in her life where she doesn't care about herself. her aggressive attitude probably pushes people away, her academics certainly aren't a priority. maybe she's the prettiest girl in town, but this only references what she looks like and never what she Feels like. her whole persona is the true mirage.

therefore i interpret mirage being in a schoolgirl outfit, her title as the prettiest girl, her referral to herself as a fair maiden, and her entire presentation of femininity as a representation of her being stuck in her ways. (in the story, at least. of course mirages physical appearance is a riff on dating sim tropes, but i think that the schoolgirl outfit is too interesting to be forgotten when it comes to her personality and character)

it's clear that mirage is unhappy. it's clear that her nihilistic perspective has made her devalue herself. so i think she continues to wear the schoolgirl outfit and go to school and use her title because she's unable to break free of what's been set out for her.

i think personally that mirage's character is all about being stuck. stuck in your view of the world, stuck in your lifestyle, stuck in a town you hate surrounded by people you hate going to a school you hate. mirage is about needing to be pulled out of the haze that is total despair, and you (as the player character) are meant to do exactly that.

so to me, mirage's outfit and reliance on the classic version of femininity just emphasizes how she is stuck. mirage doesn't know how to get out of her societal role as the prettiest girl. she continues to act as this specific version of what a girl is, she continues to dress as a schoolgirl and go to school because she believes she has to. she enjoys none of it, but it's okay if she rationalizes it as "all of life is supposed to be painful anyways". with mirage's acceptance of the world's meaninglessness, she also accepts the idea that she has to be a girl in this specific way. and it sucks for her
