Wasps are great! Some social wasps can not only recognize individuals of their own species, they can recognize humans as well and “befriend” people!
I’ve had positive experiences with the yellowjackets that live around campus at my school- my school is full of insect lovers who are pretty chill about them, and I think they recognize that at least some of the humans around them are friendly, as they’ll often land on me or share a bite of my lunch, but have never stung me or been aggressive, and I haven’t heard anyone talk about them stinging people.
There are also lots of cool wasps outside of yellowjackets and hornets, many of which cannot sting. Some of them are ridiculously tiny- the smallest insect in the world is a type of fairy wasp smaller than some single-called parameciums and amoebas. (Wikipedia article here if you’re interested.) Wasps are incredibly diverse and beautiful, and we needn’t fear and loathe them because a few of them might sting.
[Image description from alt text: A photo of a small brown wasp pollinating a dandelion. Only part of the dandelion flower is visible, because it dwarfs the wasp in size. The wasp has faint, light stripes on its abdomen, bent antennae, and purplish eyes.]
I saw this posted on reddit to a wholesome memes sub, and it was full of nothing but people being unnecessarily awful on a post trying to spread information about why these creatures are beautiful and worthy of living. (Interesting note: They don't need a reason to be allowed to live.) I got sick of trying to correct people on there who were more interested in hating wasps than hearing the truth.
Honestly, it's just exhausting sometimes.

Thank you @theoptimistictabby435 for supporting Oakie!
Edit: vote for Oakie here (link back to my original post so I can thank people who vote): https://www.tumblr.com/spectruminterests/713686350203863040/vote-for-oakie-suny-mascot-madness?source=share
I have a little playlist of romantic songs that I sing along to with my sibling headmate. We continue to choose each other even though we never had a choice in the first place.
Tumblr people, can I ask something weird? Can I ask you to vote in a popular tournament poll…. Not on this hellsite? 🥺👉👈
My school’s mascot is Oakie the Acorn, and they’re probably the Tumblr-est mascot you could think of.
I mean, they’re an acorn for goodness’ sake, they’re officially non-binary, and they’re all about sustainability. The school they represent is also very tumblr- SUNY ESF is a school dedicated to saving the Earth, and its student culture makes it a place where the genders are queer and the neuros are divergent :) People just stop to stare at a weird mushroom or interesting insect all the time here, and if someone spots them, instead of ridicule, you’ll probably have two people staring.
In conclusion, vote for Oakie!
Fantasy concept: a world in which dinosaurs survived and coexist with humans, but only some of the smaller ones
they’re mostly harmless to people (although some of the more predatory ones might occasionally eat a small pet) so people feed them and keep them as pets
Some of them are smarter than dogs and cats and can use simple tools
People tend to underestimate the commitment it takes to have a pet dinosaur
In cities you sometimes find them scavenging roadkill and eating out of dumpsters
Dinosaur meat is very much a thing, you can get dinosaur nuggets at the grocery store made with actual dinosaur
There are also some traditions that use them as working animals for hunting, kinda like hunting dogs
There are a lot of dinosaur enthusiasts who go looking for dinosaurs and keep track of the species they’ve seen as a hobby
Anybody living somewhere other than a big city probably wakes up to dinosaur calls in the morning
In temperate areas you get big migrations with the changing seasons, a draw for the dinosaur enthusiasts
Like any other wildlife, at least some species can be a nuisance, people might like seeing dinosaurs roaming around their suburban neighborhood until they start pooping on everything and nesting in the garage
But they help keep the descendants of those giant Carboniferous bugs from getting out of hand

have faced ableism from other disabled people . who thought they know more about my experience with my disabilities than I do . or who thought that me being disabled is some how " threatening " them being disabled too , as if can not both be disabled .
have had other disabled people make rude comments about my disabilities . when I said that what they said was ableist , they question me , say " but I disabled " .
yes , you also disabled , but can still be ableist / say ableist things .
you not immune to say rude things / make mistake . that is ok . you just need admit when you make mistake or say rude things or be ableist . accept it happen some time and learn from it . otherwise , still being ableist .
ignoring disabled people when they tell you being ableist is being more ableist . listen to disabled people , including when you are disabled too .
Hi, we're the River System! Katlyn (she/they) and Jacob (he/him). Came for the fandoms, stayed for the off-the-wall and the cringe. 22, autistic (language abled and low support needs), Environmental Biology major. Actual Mad Scientists ;) [We do science and don't do sanity!] Mostly this is Katlyn obsessing over bugs and fandoms (Undertale, Hollow Knight, Little Nightmares, Fire Emblem: Awakening, RWBY, Arcane). Also may include photography, dark aesthetics, and general chaos from Jacob. (Cover photo by Sagar Patil on Unsplash)
