Vanya’s Room:
Ok so Vanya’s room is actually pretty interesting. Sadly we really don’t see much of her room in the show except for this tiny shot and it’s kinda hard to see anything besides the basics (bed, chair, books, violin, and so forth)
But!
Thanks to bts pics, we actually can get a better look at some of the props inside.
This is pretty much just a clearer/closer shot of the hallway scene, but I can see:
Some wall art
A completely white suitcase in the corner? (Maybe for extra storeage/clutter?)
A teddy bear on top of the suitcase
A clock and a small/book journal on the nightstand
There’s other little stuff on the nightstand and in the cubby below (like a little box?) but I can’t really tell what it is.
There’s a small stack of books on the radiator and some more on the floor next to it. 
I think there’s some stuff under her bed too
Now for the other side of her room that never actually appears in the show.
We have:
A wall mirror
Some hooks for clothes
Sheet music stand
Some books propped up in the corner on the floor?
A dresser behind the door
On the dresser:
A little metal cat statue
A white bowl with some stuff in it?
Some plain white books (I really like how they added in the white details, I think it’s a nice nod to her powers/alter ego)
There’s some other stuff on there, but I can’t really tell what they are besides more books and maybe a little picture?
There’s also a shelf above her dresser, but again, I can’t distinguish much of what’s on it besides:

And a metronome! We also see a metronome appear on her character poster.
There’s also another very interesting detail about Vanya’s room, it eventually becomes apart of Klaus’s room.
If you watch the flashback scenes vs the 2019 scenes, you’ll notice Klaus’s room (which is right next to Vanya’s) is much bigger in the present than it was when they were kids in the 1x03 flashback.
That’s because at some point Klaus expanded his room and took down the wall (on the right) between his and Vanya’s.
Notice the gray bricks and the black radiator in front of the window.
You can also see the divide where the wall used to be (and that Klaus’s bed is still in the same spot)
I’m not really sure when it happened. One theory I had was that perhaps it happened because Vanya was sent away to school like in the comics?
But on the other hand, it looks like Klaus’s room had already been expanded in the 1x10 flashback where Vanya destroys the house. (And we know Vanya was still living there at least when Ben died at age 16.)
However, that flashback is *technically* a splice between the past and the present (because Vanya is remembering things but she’s also looking at their rooms in the present) so perhaps it doesn’t give us an accurate time frame? I’m not sure. 🤷♀️
But either way, I think it’s a very interesting detail. Vanya lost her room at some point and it’s kind of sad because the rest of the siblings still have rooms to come back to and even use them over the course of season 1...but Vanya doesn’t.
They changed Elliot’s name in the credits of TUA :))))))

i have a lil canon divergent trans vanya story that’s been on the slow cooker in the back of my mind, here’s what i’ve got so far. his name is ivan bc vanya is a diminutive of ivan and also ivan is a cool name that slaps hard
- he sits down to write the book and does actual introspection for the first time in his life and he’s like ohhh my god im not a girl. idk for sure what i am yet but it sure as hell isn’t a girl. so he calls up diego and is like “hey so you’re trans” and diego is like “…….hello to you too” and ivan’s like “okay so fun fact! so am i” and diego is popping bottles
- diego comes over and mayhaps they both get a little drunk and diego’s like so what’s up? and ivan is like “okay so i was writing this tell all memoir about our childhood-” and diego goes i’m gonna stop you right there. no you absolutely are not. so the book doesn’t get written, ivan and diego get a lot closer, and ivan doesn’t burn bridges with the rest of his siblings
- after a while ivan is like fuck it……hrt time. he goes to the doctor and the conversation goes a lil like this: doctor: are you on any prescription medications? :) ivan: uhhh yeah 500000 milligrams of fuckshit, take twice a day and supplement as needed :) doctor, picking up the phone: okay so we’re checking you into the hospital right now immediately. also i think you need to fire or maybe kill your psychiatrist
- so he gets off the meds way sooner! this has two major impacts: he learns about his powers, and he gets more in touch with his emotions. his powers scare the hell out of him but he’s got diego, and klaus too when he’s reachable (he/they solidarity)! klaus is the one who puts it together that allison must have rumored him and it’s a good thing she’s on the other side of the country bc in that moment ivan may have killed her. but she’s not, and he has time to calm down and process how he feels about it.
- he gets a lot more confidence and self esteem and starts going to Real Therapy. he becomes much closer with his coworkers at the orchestra, he gets second chair, the kids he tutors LOVE him. one day he and allison are able to have a (mostly) civil talk about it and they start rebuilding that bridge together, allison even invites him to a couple movie premieres. there are still setbacks and bad days and things aren’t perfect but they’re getting better and god they could be so much worse
- so all in all things are going pretty well! the Conflict would come from reginald somehow realizing that ivan’s off the meds but like i don’t actually have any more details, i just think it would be interesting
- i think the apocalypse could still happen, but it would be a result of reginald himself trying to contain ivan rather than what actually happens in s1. it would be interesting though bc five wouldn’t have ivan’s book in the future and wouldn’t know anything about what happened after he left

So far I haven't seen anyone talk about Vanya watching Pogo die. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on that scene
holy shit holy smokes I have SO many thoughts thank you so much Anon because there’s a lot of subtext and so many interesting dialogue choices, blocking choices, and musical choices that add so much to the scene. Major fucking props to Elliot Page for his stellar acting and major props to the CGI team for the subtle emotions on Pogo’s face, as well as Adam Godley for a heart-wrenching voice performance.
you know its a big deal when i actually rewatch the scene instead of going off my shitty memory
I’m gonna try and break it down so let’s actually start by establishing the vibe between these two before this scene.
Episode 1 established that Vanya does love Pogo or at least to some degree she does, she is someone that she trusts. He’s the one who tells her that the mansion will always be her home, he’s the one who tries to assure her her father did love her (that’s fucked up Pogo, come on man), and he’s concerned about her safety (offering to call her a cab). Vanya’s defenses are still there but they aren’t as raised as they are with Diego or Allison, there is some level of trust in their relationship (she opens up about the sandwiches in an attempt to make small talk, she does not actively make an attempt with her other family members). If she was stuck in the house while her siblings were out, no doubt she probably latched onto this old chimpanzee as a pseudo-father figure.
She trusts Pogo, she is not aware of his complacency in her abuse. Pogo holds affections to all of them but I do think there was a bond between Vanya and him that’s being alluded to here.
Let’s fast forward to the scene now that we’ve established there is a bond, because we have set-up so let’s have some pay-off:
Vanya tearing down the mansion is a fucking treat to watch, there’s no denying that. However, the events leading up to it are sad, distressing, she should never have reached this point of destruction. She was betrayed by the people she loved (Allison with the rumor, Leonard with the journal, and her siblings by locking her in a cage and walking away and leaving her there). She’s breaking down mentally and she’s taking the house down with her - she is both tearing down her cage and herself.
Look at how calmly she’s walking, she’s done.
So when she gets to the living room (is that what it’s called?) and she has the flashback of Reginald telling at her to be quiet, yeah she’s fucking pissed. He tore apart her life, he told her time and time again to be quiet, continuously muted her (physically with the cage, mentally with reinforcing the rumor). She is done with Reginald, she’s done with it all. Except-
(We’re going line by line now)
“Miss Vanya, that’s quite enough!” Pogo talks to her like a child throwing a tantrum and in some ways, she is. He talks to all of the Hargreeves if they were children and in many ways, they really all are. They’ve never grown up, Vanya never got the chance to grow up. When was the last time she was in touch with her emotions, before they were strangled by her pills? When she was four years old. Of course everything is overwhelming, she’s been sedated for years now.
“Miss Vanya, I under how upset you are. But I can assure that none of your siblings bear any of the responsibility for what happened to you as a child.” Pogo is trying to defend the other Hargreeves and to some extent, what he’s saying is true. But the thing is...what happened to her as a child is continuing into her adulthood and destroying her life. She has lived sedated and under the influence of a poorly thought out rumor. She’s struggling physically and mentally. What happened to her as a child is still clearly fucking her life up and the other Hargreeve siblings contributed to it, unknowingly or not.
And when she turns to them, her eyes turn brown again. She is herself and she needs to be to hear his answer. This is someone she trusts, this is someone she has turned to for comfort time and again throughout her childhood and when she moves towards him, pretending to be lax and casual, you can tell there’s a storm brewing. She doesn’t want him to be a part of this, she doesn’t want to believe that another person she thought could trust is complicit in this fucked up conspiracy of her life.
She asks anyways: “Did you know?”
Listen to her, she’s on the verge of tears and she so desperately wants Pogo to say no, she wants to spare him but only if he admits that he still cares, that he wasn’t a betrayer. This is an opportunity for him to escape, to lie, and Pogo, who has been so wrapped up in keeping secrets throughout the season, now knows that lying will only make things worse. He tells the truth but he does it in a way that let’s us know what we’ve always known: Pogo’s loyalties have always lied with Reginald, never with the children.
“Your father discovered...that you were capable of great things. Much like your brothers and sister. But your powers were...too great. He only wanted to protect you from yourself as well as your siblings.” Vanya has been told she’s ordinary, that she is not worth much because of that. Now she’s being told she was too great? Pogo pretty much just said: You will never be good enough.
Then the last line...fuck he has shifted the blame onto her, that her father was only doing what was best, that she was too dangerous. Pogo, what the fuck.
Vanya asks again, she needs to hear him say it, and there is no triumph in this scene, this is another betrayal of someone she thought she was close to, someone she could trust. All he’s done is say you’re not enough and you’re too dangerous.
Major fucking props to the CGI on this part where Pogo is silent, he is thinking this over. He has spent years fanning the flames of this lie and if he lied again, if he said, Vanya would not have killed him. But Pogo knows the time for lies is over, that Vanya, who is a little girl that is hurting from years worth of abuse and lies, deserves the truth: “Yes, Miss Vanya. I knew.”
There is no one left that has not betrayed her in some way or another, Pogo has just admitted it. Vanya hangs her head, her face grows shadowed and both the gears in the audience’s head and Pogo’s head are turning: what will she do? Then she looks up and her eyes are silver. Vanya is letting go of any sliver of hope she once had for her family, she’s done. She thought had a bond with Pogo, a level of trust from a bond forged in childhood to one quieter in adulthood but still there. It’s gone and he’s said as much.
She lifts him in the air and keeps him there, lets him writhe in agony in a similar way to Leonard. Both of them have betrayed her, both of them are going to pay for it.
Look at where she flings him! The symbolism is SO fucking blatant here: He is impaled on antlers underneath Reginald’s portrait. The show has shown us these taxidermied animals (she’s turned Pogo into one) and how Reginald’s portrait looms over them. She knows where his loyalties die now and in some ways, it reads to me as Vanya saying: “You will die like a dog by your master’s side.”
She’s watching someone she thought she could trust die, she did that to him. She’s not enjoying his suffering, she didn’t relish in the act of impaling him, but she did because that is what she believe needs to be done (the parallels between this and Leonard’s death...fuck man). She needs to be sure he dies, she’s not taking any chances While he dies, he is being forced to look into the eyes of his killer, the killer he helped create.
The music is sorrowful as Pogo gasps for air, blood dribbling down his mouth. As with any Vanya soundtracks, there is a heavy use of strings, strings are Vanya’s instrument. It’s grieving, Vanya is grieving for what she has lost and for what she never had to begin with.

Fair warning, this is gonna be a ramble!
So I was just thinking about Vanya, and how sort of sweet and polite she was in the first season, and that got me thinking.
I fully believe Vanya is autistic, and from my own experiences, I was thinking about growing up. When I was a child I didn’t really know how to interact with the world. I grew up watching a lot of TV shows and movies (mostly ones that my sister would put on) but before I mirrored TV shows characters, I mirrored her. But Vanya didn’t watch TV growing up, so she didn’t have Disney Princesses or Thomas the Tank Engine or Arthur like I did. (For anyone who doesn’t know, mirroring is one of the ways that autistic kids may learn to interact with the world, through watching how NTs interact and then mimicking it to fit in or at the very least to be able to communicate with someone.)
The only people Vanya had to mirror were her family, and given their general attitude towards her it seems unlikely that she did. When I was a child I recognised which behaviours I never wanted to mimic: my parents screaming at each other or us, my sister telling me if I didn’t do what she wanted she’d never love me again/she’d hate me for the rest of our lives. I knew those things made me feel bad, so I knew they weren’t things I wanted to do to others.
In the same way, I think Vanya knew she didn’t want to mimic the negative behaviours of her siblings. So I think the person she mirrored most was Grace (and maybe Pogo a little). Grace was their mum, she was loving and nurturing and exactly the kind of person I would have wanted to mirror as a child. Except Vanya has added insecurities. It made me realise that growing up, Vanya was often softly-spoken and polite, because that’s how Grace was. But we never see Grace get angry... So Vanya never learned a healthy way of dealing with her anger, especially given that she was drugged up a lot of her childhood.
If anyone can word this more coherently than I did, or come up with a better analysis, please do, because I’m not sure my argument made much sense (or even had a point to it...?)
TL;DR - Autistic!Vanya mirrors Grace, and that’s why her personality is somewhat reminiscent of Grace’s.
What do you think it was like for Vanya when she was in that weird trance in 1x10?
Because I’m partial to autistic!Vanya I see her trance as kind of a sci-fi version of a meltdown: She goes completely nonverbal, displays out-of-character levels of aggression, wants to stick to her routine by attending her concert, and only shows signs of self-awareness when Alison is nice to her instead of trying to attack her like her brothers. I think internally it may have been a similar experience to the one they showed us in season 2 when she’s being electrocuted. The cataclysmic power just adds some *✧･ﾟ:*spice.･ﾟ: *✧
