I think fandom will be immensely improved once people manage to internalize that 1) racism and misogyny in fics and in fandom culture are not necessary evils to sustain a thriving fandom ecosystem and 2) if your thriving fandom megalopolis has racism and misogyny as load bearing walls then it deserves to be destroyed.

I Don't know why all this is happening to me.

Some thoughts on Mel and Ambessa from Arcane :)

Anon this one's for you (I was originally going to put this in my answer to your ask but it got longer than I expected so here we are lol)!!

I LOVE Mel. And not just because I'm a raging lesbian ☝ She's genuinely a really well written character. She's so intelligent, not to mention manipulative (especially in s1), and it's so impressive how she utilizes that to get what she wants. I didn't really care for Jayce very much in s1 either, so whenever Mel convinced him to do what she wanted I was just sitting there like "yes queen play him like a fiddle. 😍" That aside, she genuinely has a good heart, and I appreciate that the writers let those two facets of her character coexist without defining her by one or the other. I also really enjoyed her getting more agency in s2 (or at least in act 3, I suppose, since she was effectively taken out of the game so to speak for the first couple acts)—and her actions/success became less dependent on Jayce as well which was nice. Her fighting with Cait against Ambessa was SO good omg

Speaking of Ambessa...she's also such a cool character. I can't say I like her as much specifically bc of how she took advantage of Caitlyn and her grief + status in s2, but at the same time, it makes total sense for her character and that doesn't make her any less of a great villain. In fact, that's a large part of WHY she's such a good villain. But her extremely tactical and planned takeover of Piltover aside—she's a cunning warlord and just as manipulative as Mel, but she's also a MOTHER, and words cannot express how much I enjoy the fact that that's treated as an integral part of her character instead of an afterthought. She isn't depicted as weak because she's a mother, and while she personally does feel weakened by her children (particularly Mel), it's only out of her love for them. Plus, at the end of the day, the final battle showed us that even her love for Mel wouldn't impede her lust for power, so her role as a mother doesn't cheapen her ruthlessness either. FANTASTIC stuff. Side note, but I also loved her bond with Rictus.

Ambessa's also honestly really similar to Mel. If you switched out Mel's softness/morals for an extremely strong love of family, you basically get Ambessa, and I think that's part of why they clashed the way they did. They're both incredibly intelligent, and so so skilled at manipulating any situation in their favor, influencing others, and taking power, and I imagine those are shared qualities that Ambessa loved and Mel loathed for a long time. Meanwhile, Ambessa's unshakable principles (eg. Fox vs. Wolf mentality) simply didn't allow her to fully accept Mel's empathy, just as Mel's empathy for others made Ambessa's cruelty seem intolerable to her. But they still loved each other to the end, and I adore that. Mel holding her mother as she died because of her, Ambessa finally recognizing Mel as what she deems to be the perfect leader in her dying moments....ohhhh they're so complicated.

I feel like Sevika kept the giant chompy claw arm. She'd never admit it, but that thing is sacred to her now. It's all she has left of Jinx. She could get a new arm with much more practical articulate fingers, and maybe she does for day to day, but the claw arm feels like it belongs to her in a way no other prosthetic ever has.

And you know she wears it to Council meetings. Just to remind everyone - that she's Zaun, that she's dangerous, that Jinx may be dead as far as anyone knows, but she's not gone. She's never gone. She's a symbol of Zaunite tenacity and ferocity and always will be, the same girl who started the war with a fiery fuck you to Piltovan oppression ended it by saving their asses and the Pilties had better never forget it.

When they're pissing her off, Sevika shrugs off her cloak and thunks that big claw on the table, still covered in Jinx doodles, and taps the claw tips and it echoes in that big stone chamber and every other Councilor goes pale.

When they're really pissing her off, she lets it play Get JINXED.

She long ago figured out how to game the slot machine mechanic to get what she wants. But she pretends, oh no, sorry, it's so random, glitches all the time, I don't control it. With the biggest smuggest smirk.

I've so far shown only early moments but this is later in the sugarisnotacondiment AU, when he and Vander need to take care of two kids, and Silco goes full business mode. He tells people Sevika is his secretary, which she is but she doubles as bodyguard.

I love dressing up characters and since Sevika is rumored to be of Indian origin, I dressed her in Indian clothes😋

The Arcane fandom is so unserious. Like, why would you post anti shit in a ship tag and then play victim when you get jumped by all the people who follow that tag??

not all ships are For wanting them to be in a happy healthy relationship together. sometimes shipping two characters means you want them to be erotically obsessed with each other and become entwined in a mutually toxic love affair for a few months and then horrifically break each other's hearts and never speak again. sometimes you want them to be codependent best friends with enough repression to explode a submarine who only make out/have sex when they're at their worst. sometimes you want them to pine after each other for years, never say anything, and then die. sometimes you want them to kill each other. this, too, is shipping

I keep seeing people say caitjinx shippers are annoying bc jinx obviously hates caitlyn and i hate to break it to them but I fear that’s what makes it hot and awesome

like, i love stories where good people are flawed and at odds with each other, and can be unfair to each other or themselves. i don't need all the characters to be friends or never have conflict.

but it is very different from the fandom concept of 'portraying flaws' where an already routinely demonized character of color is constantly getting chewed out by other characters who are basically props, who are only there to voice the fandoms anger, and all for the sake of the fandom's chosen white woobie's catharsis.

and of course, when you want to focus more on the underappreciated characters and point out fandoms racism and misogyny, it's "why don't you create for your blorbos yourself instead of complaining!" but when it's a 100th post in the character tag demanding more 'flawed' portrayals for the character (while all popular artists and writers in fandom are already hyper-critical of the character at best or bash them at worst) it's considered fine.

(and when you see what fics are getting recommended under those posts... it becomes even more clear that it's not about nuanced portrayals)
