Writing Weapons (1): Swords

The Thrusting Sword

Type of fight scene: entertaining, duels, non-lethal fights, non-gory deaths, swashbuckling adventure

Mostly used in: Europe, including Renaissance and Regency periods

Typical User: silm, male or female, good aerobic fitness

Main action: thrust, pierce, stab

Main motion: horizontal with the tip forward

Shape: straight, often thin, may be lightweight

Typical Injury: seeping blood, blood stains spreading

Strategy: target gaps in the armous, pierce a vital organ

Disadvantage: cannot slice through bone or armour

Examples: foil, epee, rapier, gladius

The Cleaving Sword

Type of fight scene: gritty, brutal, battles, cutting through armour

Typical user: tall brawny male with broad shulders and bulging biceps

Mostly used in: Medieval Europe

Main action: cleave, hack, chop, cut, split

Main motion: downwards

Shape: broad, straight, heavy, solid, sometime huge, sometimes need to be held in both hands, both sides sharpened

Typical Injury: severed large limbs

Strategy: hack off a leg, them decapitate; or split the skull

Disadvantage: too big to carry concealed, too heavy to carry in daily lifem too slow to draw for spontaneous action

Examples: Medieval greatsword, Scottish claymore, machete, falchion

The Slashing Sword

Type of fight scene: gritty or entertaining, executions, cavalry charge, on board a ship

Mostly used in: Asia, Middle East

Typical user: male (female is plausible), any body shape, Arab, Asian, mounted warrior, cavalryman, sailor, pirate

Main action: slash, cut, slice

Main motion: fluid, continuous, curving, eg.figure-eight

Shape: curved, often slender, extremely sharp on the outer edge

Typical Injury: severed limbs, lots of spurting blood

Strategy: first disable opponent's sword hand (cut it off or slice into tendons inside the elbow)

Disadvantage: unable to cut thorugh hard objects (e.g. metal armor)

Examples: scimitar, sabre, saif, shamshir, cutlass, katana

Blunders to Avoid:

Weapons performing what they shouldn't be able to do (e.g. a foil slashing metal armour)

Protagonists fighting with weapons for which they don't have the strength or build to handle

The hero carrying a huge sword all the time as if it's a wallet

Drawing a big sword form a sheath on the back (a physical impossiblity, unless your hero is a giant...)

Generic sword which can slash, stab, cleave, slash, block, pierce, thrust, whirl through the air, cut a few limbs, etc...as if that's plausible

The Nice Guys Fanfiction Ideas

3:10 to Yuma Fanfic Ideas!

Have you just seen 3:10 to Yuma (2007) or rewatched it, only to look on AO3 and realize, "There isn't a wide variety of Fanfiction, damn it's more empty than my wallet!" Well, if you're in the writing mood or need plot ideas, I've got you!

(These can be used for more than just 3:10 to Yuma, but using it for 3:10 to Yuma would be so amazing.❤️)

Wade and Dan living together to 'help' Dan pay rent💀😭

3:10 to Yuma but Dan survives and becomes changed by the overall experience while Wade becomes a good person since Dan has broken his perspective on the world.

Dan dies and Wade tells his story(can be written in many different ways)

Dan survives and takes care of Wade's injuries that he gained from the whole trip to get to the train.

Modern Au where Ben Wade is part of a motorcycle gang and Dan is whatever job you think he should have.

Alice leaves, Wade and Dan raise William and Mark😱

Coffee shop AU! But Dan works at a coffee shop and Wade is an artist or just goes there to draw. (Can take place in a modern au or in the original setting time)

Ben Wade and Dan Evans are just friends who travel together after 3:10 to Yuma (with Dan surviving.)

Wade is nice to Dan but Dan doesn't like it too much because it makes him feel inferior (can be applied to listed fanfic ideas)

Vampires in Space

The earth was destroyed. We're talking blown to smithereens and is now a bunch of space rubble destroyed. Obviously, all living things were killed in this cataclysmic event.

Except for you, an immortal vampire who cannot die.

Set adrift without a drop of blood and nothing but the cold void surrounding you, you float in a sort of stasis; painfully alive but forever starving and helpless to change it. It seems the vast emptiness is all that will comprise of your eternity.

Until your path is interrupted by a ship, and you dare to hope that maybe you aren't as alone as you thought.

So

I LOVE the stories where Danny is deaged and later found by one of the bats and taken in as a son or he's Bruce's bio son and is either Damian's twin or half brother or little/big brother BUT I don't see a lot of reborn/reincarnated Danny into the batfamily (I can think of two but one of them he is Dick's son?clone?somewhat clone? And the other is an amazing story where Danny is reborn as Jazz and Jason's kid and I love it to bits)

So let's change that a bit and have some fun.

Here's the idea

Danny, either from finally aging to his death (it was slow and long aging but he is still partly human too don't forget that) or dying at the hands of GIW (or by his parents if we go the Bad!Fentons route), is reborn into the batfamily.

He could either be Bruce and Selina's kid after they finally tie the knot, or be a one more attempt by Ra's or Talia to get the heir they want but is immediately found out when Tim notices certain labs active and they find baby Danny. OR Danny can be an oops baby to Bruce's one night stands OR one of the batboys baby. EITHER WAY, Danny is reborn into the family from the start.

And he has his memories. (He has little hints of his powers btw, they dont fully come in until his 14th bday)

And his new family all swear to give him a proper and happy childhood (as best as they can seeing how it's Gotham)

Only I want Danny milking being a baby then toddler/kid and later a teen for all its worth. He's going to enjoy this new life with everything he gots.

Like imagine the chaos and shenanigans he gets into as a toddler. He's the king of hide-and-seek. He uses his tears to get away from whoever annoys him. He's mastered the puppy dog look to get away with things (it holds no effect on Alfred though, man is immune to all tricks).

But then of course there's the... odd things that happen around him. Sometimes they catch him talking to no one. Sometimes they spot a ball or a toy rolling to Danny despite him not touching it. Sometimes they think they see or hear someone in the room with Danny only to go busting in to find nothing. (One time someone busted his nursery door down they heard on his baby/toddler monitor the distorted voice of a woman singing him a lullaby (it was Martha who was soothing him to sleep after a tiny nightmare, boy was Bruce not ready for one of his kids to hum the tune in the morning)).

Danny asking for an extra drink and the newspaper after Bruce is done before he runs off to one of the many sitting rooms the manor has. There he leaves the drink and the newspaper near a chair, hops into another chair nearby and chats to someone (they all think its his imaginary friend but that honestly doesn't explain why the drink seems to slowly disappear without anyone touching it. (btw its Thomas, Danny is talking to they like chatting in the morning)

OR when Danny gives hints to cases his family is working on, how he knows? No one knows. Sometimes they chalk it up to a kid randomly saying stuff or seeing it from a different simple outlook but sometimes it seems a little too on the nose and they think Danny might know about their night jobs... (He does know, but he gets some info from Lady Gotham who visits him and gives him little hints to pass onto her fav Knights)

Basically what I want is a reborn Danny trying to get a decent childhood/teenage years before his powers kick in full swing, his family trying the same but they got no idea about the powers (maybe), and ghosts like to visit Danny. The shenanigans that follow will be amazing.

For some reason I imagine whenever Kaos was sleeping or venerable between the Skylander games whenever he was sleeping, some Wilikin were hiding in the walls and watching over him since everyone Kaos knows would probably hurt him or kidnap him or some shit, for example if the Skylanders burst in and find Kaos sleeping and try to wake him up a Willkie from inside the wall would probably throw a book or something at them to make em back away. Another example is when Kaos accidentally took a nap when plotting, this takes place in Superchargers, and The Darkness tries to wake him up by force and a literal spear comes out of the wall and almost hit The Darkness. Honestly I just like the idea of The Wilikin still remembering Kaos and staying somewhat by his side :)

Ok, seriously, how is no one talking about this villain from that one MV? I mean they probably could’ve gone something with this, but it’s definitely not very canon I know. I’m probably gonna make a whole entire theory or fan something on this lol, but still they probably should’ve made this an actual villain because it would be an actual threat to everyone. It could somehow tunnel through into the schools computer room and try to lure Cula back to it, I’m guessing it’s some sort of virus or a actual villain that owns a company since the headset that Cula is wearing has a logo on it, and this MV takes place at either Cula’s hideout or even house but I’m guessing hideout since it had so many video games and a whole basement..typical gamer setup probably. Now it probably took a week or a few days to figure out where and what happened to Cula in general in the MV for Zizi, Kongkong, Frankie, and Kenji. (Sorry if I mispronounced anything, have a hard time remembering names lol) anyway I might be looking waaayyy to into it but hey, it makes for good angst ideas lol

Prison Au

Okokokokok soooooo I've recently been thinking up a Sun and Moon Au that's still in the works.

So it's starter name is Cell Mates and is a reader x DCA.

So it's like this, the reader is a prisoner and the prison's bully of sorts. Then somehow Sun and Moon get arrested for something that I want to keep hidden in case I make this into something, the boys some how get placed with reader and shenanigans ensue, like them being caught up in a escape plan and getting into fights and otherwise animatronic jester caretaker silliness.

So, whatcha think?

Chaos is set into motion when during a Rogue attack, Damian Wayne (not as Robin at the moment) saves him and returns Danny to Ellie...

The internet/news happen because of course it did.

And people mistake Danny as his kid and Ellie his baby mama.

As a kpop fan, a big NCT fan, as well as now a ATLA fan, I thought, why not combine my two favorite things?

Am now in the progress of writing a YuWin fanfic set in the ATLA world

YuWin are not playing the roles of any of the Gaang, but there will be an NCT-ed Gaang, and the tv show plot still happens, but not to YuWin, but sometimes they clash with the plot, like maybe they get in the same prison as Haru or they’re in Ba Sing Se at the same time as the Gaang

And of course, Mark will be the Aang in this fic lmao in my head that makes sense and is funny

Ways to get to know your characters:

These are just some ways I do t, feel free to add your own tips!

Google sheets. Just google sheets. Make a sheet for your story and create categories to fill on your character's traits. Very simple example:

2. Making Pinterest boards. Listen maybe I'm biased because I'm on Pinterest more than I'm on Tumblr and it gives me the most intense nostalgia of any website/app ever, but it may be my most helpful tactic. This works in plenty of ways. Making a board for one story's character designs and making individual categories for each character in that board. Making individual board for each character's design, aesthetic, personality, whatever. No example but I think you get it.

3. I might sound like you lame ass ELA teacher from 9th grade or whatever when I say this, but plot mountains are really helpful. Now I don't mean the plot plot for all you, "I just start writing and am as surprised as my characters when everything goes to shit." writers like me, I'm talking about an internal plot. To explain, there is an external plot (exposition, rising action, climax, etc.) and internal plot (character development,) making external plot mountains isn't helpful for me because I want freedom in my writing. I know where it starts and sometimes where it stops and that's good enough, but writing the development of a character is good to outline just for the foreshadowing and because CHARACTER FLAWS ARE FUCKING IMPORTANT. (Cue the one post about eating mayo packets)

4. Mark their birthdays in your calendar. Like google calendar or whatever the fuck you use. Anyway, dedicate their birthday to just getting to know them. Make a wish list of presents they'd like, or a slideshow about the party activities they'd like, or a pinterest board about what their party theme would be. It's fun, I swear.

5. Make lists of a bunch of stuff. Their flaws, their strengths, their favourite thing, their pet peeves, their favourite people, their pets, their little quirks they have, etc.

6. Physical objects. Make them, buy them, or just stuff you already have. Make a little box of things they'd like or have. Treat them like a friend. A real person. It'll inspire you to write or draw more and you can come up with little backstories on the items.

7. Give them a catchphrase. Even if they never say it, it's cute. I like them. Most people do, I think.

found this post by @willtheweaver and wanted to fill in with my own characters! it was a tag game but I'm still new enough to having a tumblr account that I'm not sure who to tag. anyone can steal this.

(two sets of siblings, Evan/Austin and Jack/James/Jude/Julian):

Who looks more like their dad? Evan

probably James.

Who looks more like their mom? Evan

either Jude or Julian.

Who eats the most? Austin probably

Jude used to eat a lot, but then he got a girlfriend and went on this fitness kick. (as if his body wasn't good enough. It was.) Julian probably eats the normalest amount Jack goes in spurts but can eat a ton. James kinda is similar but less on again, off again - he just shovels it down.

Who has been in the weirdest situations? You'd think it would be Austin, but it's actually Evan 110%

Jack, by nature of Protagonist Syndrome, but James gets a lot of it too

Who sleeps the most? Austin :)

Between Jack and James, Jack thinks it's James. James has a healthy sleep schedule. Julian sleeps the most.

Who has the most stable romantic life? ...Austin? though to be fair Evan's mostly a mess in general, not in romance specifically

Jack, because he's a brick wall of not understanding. Stable, sure, but I'd call James healthiest as far as romantic life goes. Jude has had a girlfriend for longest but the way he approaches romance doesn't feel quite stable somehow.

What is the worst habit of each? Evan: Catastrophizing Austin: Trying new things (without stopping to think)

Jack: Protagonist SyndromeTM (Wants to do it alone, no matter what the "it" is. Saving the world or struggling through homework. He's gonna be the one to take care of it.) Jude: Comparing things to Twilight James: Getting himself into trouble :) or giving people rocks. Julian: Feigning indifference, making fun of his brothers (mostly accidentally)

Who is the most dramatic? Austin. Which isn't to say Evan's not a drama queen, because he is.

Jack. Baby of the family, rip. Julian went through a phase but he will deny it to his dying breath.

Who has the weirdest phase? Another one of those you'd think it would be Austin but it's Evan. I guess I should explain the phase, but I'll come back to that.

While Julian had A Phase, Jude's was actually the weirdest. He was super into Twilight. Still is, actually.

Who is the best cook in the family? Austin's the best cook on accident, Evan's the more reliable cook.

Julian is the best cook. James is the most creative (in a way that he makes always work out somehow). Jack gets by, and Jude is better than Jack.

What is their best memory together? For Evan, it's when they defeated that dragon back in 8th grade and he realized he was free to spend time with Austin again instead of being ashamed. For Austin, it's a memory of Evan's smile.

All four of them, it was probably the Christmas Santa showed up and gave them a sleigh ride. Julian was convinced it was Dad or Grandpa. Except Dad showed up and the whole family went out together, and they ended the journey at their grandparents' house, where both Grandma and Grandpa were settling in for the night. Jude had spent some time believing Julian but was very excited when Julian was wrong and Santa actually was real. Jack and James were pretty little and had no concept of what Julian and Jude were talking about. They were in it for the bright red sleigh with jingle bells and snow under the nighttime street lamps and getting to stay up past their bedtime.

What is their worst memory together? The Incident where Austin nearly died in an alleyway, Evan spent three days trapped in an unfamiliar and traumatizing landscape trying to recover Austin, and then Evan killed Austin when he found him. (He did survive but that was hecka traumatic and their relationship has never been the same again.)

A bad miscommunication that

What is their dream trip together? The seaside, probably in Ireland

The boys always wanted to go to that place where you can break apart rocks with Viking axes. It's unclear how the four of them came to know of such a place and it's unclear if such a place even exists.

Would you rather: not be able to shower or change clothes? Evan and Austin: Not shower.

Jack: Not shower Jude: Change clothes, I've GOTTA shower for my girl James: Change clothes. I wanna shower Julian: Meh whatever's more convenient for whatever I have going on that day. (That's not an answer. His answer would probably be not shower, since it's easier to look like you take care of yourself if you wear a different outfit every day.)

Who’s older? Evan and Austin change back and forth on that. Neither of them really knows. Austin may be years younger than Evan by some manners of measuring, but I don't think that should count because they're the same age. (At one point they had the same birthday, but over the years I think Austin's birthday drifted apart from Evan's. Not sure in which direction and at any rate they're uh. still the same age.)

Jack/James/Jude/Julian, that order. When Jack was three, James was five, Jude was twelve, and Julian was seventeen.

Describe each other in three words: Austin (as described by Evan): Crazy magic idiot Evan (as described by Austin): Strong idiot magic

These ones will be the three words the other three brothers could agree upon: Jack: Baby (werewolf) (no you can't say werewolf) (why not?) (Mom said not to!) (come on he's more than just a werewolf) (can I say Tourette's?) (dude shut up) (Julian I'm going to put autistic on yours) (okay fine not werewolf what else then?) (young?)
