In A Report Tuesday, Environment And Climate Change Canada Said The 51 Separate Herds [of Boreal Caribou]

In a report Tuesday, Environment and Climate Change Canada said the 51 separate herds [of boreal caribou] across the country remain under pressure from human and natural disturbances to their habitat more than five years after the federal and provincial governments concluded a protection agreement.

The range of the boreal caribou extends across the country from Yukon to Labrador, but its forest habitat has been increasingly disturbed by industrial activity such as forestry, mining and oil and gas development, as well as by forest fires, the spread of pests and other impacts of climate change.

From The Washington Post:

From the Washington Post:

Map from the U.S. Energy Information Administration showing how much electricity each state gets from wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal. Maine was the clear winner in 2011, getting 27 percent of its electricity coming from renewable sources — a lot of it wind power and biomass. But Maine had a lot of renewable energy back in 2001, too. South Dakota and Iowa, at 21 percent and 17 percent, have seen far more impressive growth. Both of those states got almost none of their electricity from renewable sources a decade ago.

“[T]he Frequency Of Coal Retirements Highlights The Speed At Which The Nation’s Utilities Are Changing

“[T]he frequency of coal retirements highlights the speed at which the nation’s utilities are changing the energy mix by replacing coal with natural gas and renewables, particularly wind. Few new coal plants are in the works to replace those that are being shut down...As a result of a confluence of factors, the coal industry’s decline has been a long time coming. The story of coal’s decline goes far beyond the false narrative that Trump and his EPA pick Scott Pruitt are advancing that points to EPA regulations as the sole reason for coal plant retirements.” - Devashree Saha and Sifan Liu

A Study In The Journal Science Advances Looked At Population Trends Of Sea Turtles Across 299 Populations

A study in the journal Science Advances looked at population trends of sea turtles across 299 populations for which there was publicly available data. The image shows regions where populations of sea turtles are increasing (green) and decreasing (red). Of the regional populations, there is an upward trend in 12 and a downward trend in 5, suggesting a possible rebound of sea turtle populations, albeit challenges remain.

CC = C. caretta (loggerhead turtle) CM = C. mydas (green turtle) DC = D. coriacea (leatherback sea turtle) EI = E. imbricata (hawksbill turtle) LK = L. kempii (Kemp’s ridley) LO = L. olivacea (olive ridley) ND = N. depressus (flatback turtle)

The Species Groups That Are Proportionally Most In Danger (the Proportion Of Species Within That Grouping

The species groups that are proportionally most in danger (the proportion of species within that grouping that are imperiled) are overwhelmingly freshwater species. Freshwater mussels, crayfishes, stoneflies (stonefly larvae live in freshwater), freshwater fishes and amphibians are the most at risk. This demonstrates the substantial need for a focus on conservation of freshwater habitats.

Glacier Area On Mount Kilimanjaro On The Kenya/Tanzania Border In East Africa Decreased 85% 1912-2007;

Glacier area on Mount Kilimanjaro on the Kenya/Tanzania border in East Africa decreased 85% 1912-2007; from 12.06km2 to 1.85km2. While the loss of glaciers in temperate regions (such as those in the U.S.) has been attributed to warming temperatures from climate change, glacier loss on Kilimanjaro is more likely a result of a local climate change in East Africa that occurred in the late 1800s, resulting in a drier climate. However, causes of the dramatic glacier loss remain largely unknown.

Source: Thompson, L. G., Hardy, D. R., Mark, B. G., Brecher, H. H., & Mosley-Thompson, E. (2009). Glacier loss on Kilimanjaro continues unabated. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 106(47), 19770-19775.

The Figures From The Previous Post On Deforestation (from The UN Food And Agriculture Organization) Have

The figures from the previous post on deforestation (from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization) have a significant impact on carbon emissions and climate change. Because deforestation releases carbon stored in plants and soils, deforestation has become a major source of global carbon dioxide emissions. Countries with greater deforestation have greater emissions as a result.

Forest conversion in Brazil 1990-2010 released 25.8 billion metric tons of CO2. The next four greatest emitters from deforestation were Indonesia, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Venezuela. Combating climate change will require reigning in deforestation.

Land Use Change On Cape Cod. This Image Shows A Dramatic Increase In Development On The Cape From The

Land use change on Cape Cod. This image shows a dramatic increase in development on the Cape from the 1950s into the twenty-first century. This is problemmatic, as the increased development leads to loss of native habitats and an increase in water pollution. The latter is largely a result of the fact that very little development is connected to sewers, and nitrogen from septic systems quickly leaches through the sandy soils into ponds, streams and bays.

Further, development is threatened by climate change; specifically sea level rise and increased costal erosion .
