Coal's share of U.S. electricity generation has been steadily declining, a result of market forces, particularly the low price of natural gas and the expense of building new coal plants. Since throughout its life cycle coal is arguably our dirtiest fuel source (from mountaintop removal mining, to mercury and air toxics released during combustion, to carbon emissions, to hazardous coal ash), a move away from reliance on coal benefits public health, the environment and the climate.

Domestic cats allowed to roam freely outdoors are not native to the ecosystem and can cause substantial damage. Cats hunt birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians and insects that are important components of ecosystems. The first graph shows that birds and mammals are the primary prey targets of outdoor cats, while the second shows estimates for the numbers of birds and mammals killed annually by cats in the mainland United States.

As the Trump administration rolls back Obama’s Clean Cars program, meant to increase the fuel efficiency of American cars and light trucks, demand for electric vehicles [EV] - both battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) - is soaring globally. 

But as Brad Plumer points out, a good deal of this growth is the result of policy meant to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles and build up EV infrastructure.

As a result, electric vehicles now make up more than 1 percent of sales in China, France, Denmark, and Sweden. They make up 9.7 percent of sales in the Netherlands, and 23 percent of sales in Norway, which offers some of the most generous tax incentives around, worth about $13,500 per car.

A study in the journal Science Advances looked at population trends of sea turtles across 299 populations for which there was publicly available data. The image shows regions where populations of sea turtles are increasing (green) and decreasing (red). Of the regional populations, there is an upward trend in 12 and a downward trend in 5, suggesting a possible rebound of sea turtle populations, albeit challenges remain.

 Sulztalferner is a glacier in the Alps of Austria... between 1969 and 2003, 14 of the 88 glaciers in this range disappeared. The area of these glaciers was to 54.1 km2 in 1969, but only 36.9 km2 in 2003. 

In 1990 the Sulztalferner glacier was 3050 m long; in 2017 the glacier is 2100 m long.

California's climate change law (AB 32), which puts a price on carbon emissions and creates a cap-and-trade system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, is yielding substantial reductions in emissions from oil refineries. These refineries are a major source of carbon emissions, along with a host of other toxic chemicals like ammonia, lead, benzene, mercury and acid gases.

Data from the California Air Resources Board shows that 11 refineries substantially reduced emissions between 2010 and 2011, in addition to cuts in the release of other toxic pollutants. Evidence shows that these reductions not a result of cuts in production, but to refineries investing in and upgrading equipment in response to AB 32. An example is Valero’s refinery in Benicia, CA, which decreased covered emissions by over 95,000 metric tons, while also cutting ammonia emissions by 98%, sulfuric acid by 84%, and benzene by 49%, through the installation of a new flue gas scrubber.

As governments discuss climate change in Paris, they’ll be referring to the dire predictions of climate scientists. Here are three visualizations of possible futures based on detailed climate models and summed up by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in their 2013 report. The deeper the red - the hotter things are getting.

“Over the past year, seven of the estimated 80 remaining Texas ocelots were killed by vehicles. Six of these mortalities were adult males. Among ocelots, it is not easy to be a maturing male. In order to prevent competition for access to breeding females, older males often force the younger males to leave the area where they grew up, sending them out to find females and territory of their own. Once out of protected, dense brush habitat areas, these younger males encounter the human-developed world and all of its dangers, in particular roads and vehicles. In reaction to the large proportion of road mortalities being males, Dr. Hilary Swarts, a wildlife biologist who monitors ocelots in south Texas with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) said, ‘I can’t say it’s surprising that six of the seven deaths were males, since they have such a rough time of it once the older males start to see the younger males as competition for mates and territory.’” - See more at: http://blog.cincinnatizoo.org/#sthash.YjGoogOC.dpuf

Land use change on Cape Cod. This image shows a dramatic increase in development on the Cape from the 1950s into the twenty-first century. This is problemmatic, as the increased development leads to loss of native habitats and an increase in water pollution. The latter is largely a result of the fact that very little development is connected to sewers, and nitrogen from septic systems quickly leaches through the sandy soils into ponds, streams and bays.

Further, development is threatened by climate change; specifically sea level rise and increased costal erosion .
