george lucas is such a great writer he will call the jedi mafia dons then move right on

George Lucas: The thing is, in IV, V, and VI, you didn't really get to see real Jedi in action. To me, that was something that a lot of people would want to see. And of course, the other part is, where are the Jedi at this point? What are they? We've never seen one, really, except for Obi-Wan.

The idea was to establish Jedi as what they were, which is sort of peacekeepers who moved through the galaxy to settle disputes. They aren't policemen, they aren't soldiers; they're mafia dons. They come in and sit down with the two different sides and say, "Okay, now we're going to settle this."

hey buddy . elaborate?

I'm personally convinced that Lift is going to convert everyone to the Church Of A Big Dinner.

Now thinking about the plot of sa6 (presumably, they get stormlight back as the main *big win* moment- this is the Stormlight Archives after all)

ANYWAY thinking about that and the implications of Kaladin Stormblessed disappearing when stormlight does and returning when it does. Like Herald of Second Chances and "here's your second chance with stormlight. Here's your second chance at being Radiant". Or something.

One thing I really like is how much of the Horus Heresy Design language - itself built to be a reasonable origin of the old 40k designs - ended up echoed in these new ECs. The Flawless Blades, for example, are clearly carrying the same design of sword as the Palatine Blades. The Palatines are a new-for-30k unit built around the EC's long-textual obsession with martial excellence and how many of their (40k) characters were masterful duellists. Entire unit of rapier-armed space marines who are individually a match in melee for most other chapter Centurions. Expensive, hard to use, but gorgeous models. Now, they're in 40k, with thousands of years of warp marinade. The old 40k Noise Marines were more electric-guitars-with-guns. Heresy made vaguely guitarish Sonic Cannon for them instead - the the 'body' at the back with twiddlyknobs, a long 'neck' leading to a head that opens up into a grille/emitter. Now in 40k the same cannons have been mutated back towards the Death Guitar look, with perhaps a hint of bagpipe. Love it.

Now that the hype over the initial reveal is over time to post some thoughts.

First off....Holy Slaanesh the models look amazing. All the Slaanesh bits look great. I do get that there is not alot of body horror that tends to go along with Slaanesh but to allow us our own model line combined with Warhammer going more mainstream I get it.

Lucius...just wow.... Like the new Ahriman, Kharn and Typhus he got quite the glow up.

The new lords. Gonna grab a few of them for assorted kitbashed. The Kakophonic one is personally my fav of the pair.

The new noise marines. THINGS SHALL GET LOUD NOW!!! Love the new design. It is interesting to note that at this time noise marines are the only cult troop that is not battle line.

Pour one out for the pure demon players. The reveal that Slaaneshi demons are in the codex pretty much makes the squatting of the Daemon codex rumor a sure thing. I am always sad to see a codex disappear esp one like the demon codex where they still are a major player in the lore.

The flawless blades. I was writing for my homebrew a version of them. To have models fit my headcannon is quite nice. And they look pretty good.

I am sad like most other EC players that the sonic dreadnaught is still missing. Or even an upgrade to the hellbrute. A small missed opportunity.

Despite the full list of what we keep from the CSM dex not yet available I am a little more at ease due to our new battle line. Our version of melee and bolter Legionaries still work perfect as counts as from the core CSM codex which still doesn't invalidate my current WiP jump lord conversion. Or my good luck forgfiend(so far only maulerfiend is confirmed) Fluffy. Or the traitor guard force I am planning to represent the Archite Palatines. Having 2 books to play from depending on my mood is always a good thing.

Overall I am quite excited for what we got. I was concerned our launch was gonna be just Lucius and noise marines.

But Is It Art?

But Is It Art?

Following Hive Primus ‘donating’ Astropath Shilum Drool to the settlement of Paraquat, it has received another ‘gift’. This time it comes in the form of ‘The Emperor’s Thumb’, a so-called work of art that represents the protection and benevolence of The Emperor. The item caused a storm of controversy as adherents to the Cult of Redemption protested it’s installation Slag Valley Bullett #11.…

Absolutely this. Even setting aside the showier stuff that happens later, Roshar is a living world, alive with motion.

If the Stormlight Archive ever gets an adaptation, I hope it's animated. You can get so stylistic and expressive with the spren in a way that just wouldn't look good in live action. You don't even have to point them out until Syl starts talking to Kaladin. They can just be there, present and unremarked upon. Firespren dancing around the bonfire at the Treaty feast. Fearspren from the guards Szeth attacks. Windspren blowing in the breeze during the battle that introduces us to Kaladin. Painspren as Cenn gets wounded.

All before Syl starts talking. First 10 minutes of the first episode, there have been artistic flourishes in every scene. And then one of those artistic flourishes becomes a main character.

One of the earliest lessons I had in 'adventure pacing' for running RPGs was a game where the players got arrested. When told "okay, you're all in individual cells [GM describes cells], what do you do? Look for vents, try to pick the lock?" "Sleep. We've been in continuous action for 36 hours, this is the safest we've been since we airdropped in!"

With Half-Life being talked about again, I do want to reiterate that Gordon Freeman went to work at one morning and; aside from being knocked unconscious and put into stasis a few times; went without sleep for the next six consectutive days

how to find literally any post on a blog in seconds (on desktop)

there are so many posts about ~tumblr is so broken, you can’t find any post on your own blog, it’s impossible, bluhrblub~

I am here to tell you otherwise! it is in fact INCREDIBLY easy to find a post on a blog if you’re on desktop/browser and you know what you’re doing:

url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant. every single post, every single time. in chronological order starting with the most recent post. note: it will not find #croissants or that time you made the typo #croidnssants. for a tag with multiple words, it’s just /tagged/my-croissant and it will show you everything with the exact phrase #my croissant

url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant/chrono will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the exact phrase #croissant, but it will show them in reverse order with the oldest first

url.tumblr.com/search/croissant isn’t as perfect at finding everything, but it’s generally loads better than the search on mobile. it will find a good array of posts that have the word croissant in them somewhere. could be in the body of the post (op captioned it “look at my croissant”) or in the tags (#man I want a croissant). it won’t necessarily find EVERYTHING like /tagged/ does, but I find it’s still more reliable than search on mobile. you can sometimes even find posts by a specific user by searching their url. also, unlike whatever random assortment tumblr mobile pulls up, it will still show them in a more logically chronological order

url.tumblr.com/day/2020/11/05 will show you every post on the blog from november 5th, 2020, in case you’re taking a break from croissants to look for destiel election memes

url.tumblr.com/archive/ is search paradise. easily go to a particular month and see all posts as thumbnails! search by post type! search by tags but as thumbnails now

url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio will show you every audio post on your blog (you can also filter by other post types). sometimes a little imperfect if you’re looking for a video when the op embedded the video in a text post instead of posting as a video post, etc

url.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/croissant will show you EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant, but it will show you them in the archive thumbnail view divided by months. very useful if you’re looking for a specific picture of a croissant that was reblogged 6 months ago and want to be able to scan for it quickly

url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio/tagged/croissant will show you every audio post tagged with the specific phrase #croissant (you can also filter by photo or text instead, because I don’t know why you have audio posts tagged croissant)

the tag system on desktop tumblr is GENUINELY amazing for searching within a specific blog!

caveat: this assumes a person HAS a desktop theme (or “custom theme”) enabled. a “custom theme” is url.tumblr.com, as opposed to tumblr.com/url. I’ve heard you have to opt-into the former now, when it used to be the default, so not everyone HAS a custom theme where you can use all those neat url tricks.

image

if the person doesn’t have a “custom theme” enabled, you’re beholden to the search bar. still, I’ve found the search bar on tumblr.com/url is WAY more reliable than search on mobile. for starters, it tends to bring posts up in a sensible order, instead of dredging up random posts from 2013 before anything else

if you’re on mobile, I’m sorry. godspeed and good luck finding anything. (my one tip is that if you’re able to click ON a tag rather than go through the search bar, you’ll have better luck. if your mutual has recently reblogged a post tagged #croissant, you can click #croissant and it’ll bring up everything tagged #croissant just like /tagged/croissant. but if there’s no readily available tag to click on, you have to rely on the mobile search bar and its weird bizarre whims)

im watching a little doc on youtube about an 11th century castle, and theres a bit where they are talking to a group of older women who are working on a large hand embroidered tapestry commemorating its nearly 1000 years of history & into the modern era.. and off on the border they show a bit where the women have stitched themselves working on it into the piece itself, and it made me kinda emotional

Im Watching A Little Doc On Youtube About An 11th Century Castle, And Theres A Bit Where They Are Talking

how amazing to have a visual depiction of the women who spent literal years painstakingly stitching such a wonderful piece of art that historically would have gone uncredited

I am never entirely sure if the reason Rubber Duck works is "it forces me to structure my thoughts and cover all the details one by one" or if it's something funkier, like "the brain structures for written and spoken language are different, and the subtle differences between visual and auditory processing mean different things stand out". Probably the former. But still, it could be!

Normally these I end up with a vague sense of "I think I've heard this?" This one? Practically instant. The second note. I not only know what game this is from, I know where in the game it happens, what's happening, what the track title is, and how many tries it took me to get the good ending for the encounter - not the game, just this encounter. Burned in my memory.

"The best thing we can do with power is give it away" - On the leftist critique of superhero narratives as authoritarian power fantasies:

The ongoing "Jason Todd is a cop" debate has reminded me of a brilliant brief image essay by Joey deVilla. So here it is, images first and the full essay text below:

"The Best Thing We Can Do With Power Is Give It Away" - On The Leftist Critique Of Superhero Narratives

"A common leftist critique of superhero comics is that they are inherently anti-collectivist, being about small groups of individuals who hold all the power, and the wisdom to wield that power. I don’t disagree with this reading. I don’t think it’s inaccurate. Superheroes are their own ruling class, the concept of the übermensch writ large. But it’s a sterile reading. It examines superhero comics as a cold text, and ignores something that I believe in fundamental, especially to superhero storytelling: the way people engage with text. Not what it says, but how it is read. The average comic reader doesn’t fantasize about being a civilian in a world of superheroes, they fantasize about being a superhero. One could charitably chalk this up to a lust for power, except for one fact… The fantasy is almost always the act of helping people. Helping the vulnerable, with no reward promised in return. Being a century into the genre, we’ve seen countless subversions and deconstructions of the story. But at its core, the superhero myth is about using the gifts you’ve been given to enrich the people around you, never asking for payment, never advancing an ulterior motive. We should (and do) spend time nitpicking these fantasies, examining their unintended consequences, their hypocrisies. But it’s worth acknowledging that the most eduring childhood fantasy of the last hundred years hasn’t been to become rich. Superheroes come from every class (don’t let the MCU fool you). The most enduring fantasy is to become powerful enough to take the weak under your own wing. To give, without needing to take. So yes, the superhero myth, as a text, isn’t collectivist. But that’s not why we keep coming back to it. That’s not why children read it. We keep coming back to it to learn one simple lesson… The best thing we can do with power IS GIVE IT AWAY." - Joey deVilla, 2021 https://www.joeydevilla.com/2021/07/04/happy-independence-day-superhero-style/

I mentioned this to my dad and he's been ranting for ten minutes about how it wasn't accurate to the books, mostly because Derek Jacobi can't speak Welsh or pronounce the place names.

I thought today - the TV show I'd really like to see is one about a medieval monastery.

You could have all kinds of characters: the pious guy who joined because he wanted to serve God, the son born out of wedlock sent there to cover up his parents' shame, the geek who wanted to study Latin but couldn't afford to go into university, the former knight sick of violence and afraid for his soul... Plus monasteries were centres of pilgrimage and places where criminals could take refuge, so we can have a lot of characters who crop up for a few episodes and leave.

Some plotlines I thought of:

Our relics aren't bringing in the pilgrims the way they used to - what do we do?

A women fleeing an abusive marriage has taken shelter in the monastery - how will the brothers respond to having a women in their midst?

One of the monks wants to leave - will the abbot accept or not?

A murderer has taken refuge in the abbey, and the abbot decides to try and save his soul - what will happen?

People are coming to the monastery for food during the famine, but the monastery is itself short of food - how will this be dealt with?

War has broken out between two local lords, and the monks attempt to broker a treaty - will it work?

I've already mentioned some reasons why I think this setting would lend itself to television, but I'd also love to make it for two other reasons:

Get people to understand how weird medieval religion could get, but also that, within its own frame of reference, it was a reasonable and consistent belief system.

Show people that the Middle Ages consisted of more than just muddy people stabbing each other and burning scientists at the stake.

Not once in the Trailer do we see supes punching anyone. He breaks a window. But there is all this. Only a few seconds, but in such a short trailer it's still 5% of the runtime. Because Superman is about saving lives. Not beating baddies, not defeating villains, not avenging, but saving lives. Having the ability and the desire to help. If he can't be hurt, no-one else can either.

No, my highschool had a haunted tower. I mean, it was a converted Georgian mansion built by a robber-baron to look like a castle, which I'm sure is a very common source of school buildings in the UK.

I could never be a protagonist because I'd just never move the plot along. "You have free reign of this castle, but don't go into this one area" Okie dokie. I mind my own business and hang out in the library. Queen of staying in my own lane. I'll never discover your magic curse.
